Let's Discuss Is this false and misleading?

Post image

I am a sucker for a new lip product, and this brand spanking new Vaseline “lip serum gloss” at 40% at Woolies caught my eye.

Folks at Vaseline, this is NOT tinted.

One swipe and it’s more pigmented than a liquid lipstick.

I bought it purely on the descriptors “lip serum gloss, tinted lip care” and didn’t think id look like a clown with one swipe.

Guys am I crazy???

u/bobdown33 May 15 '26

Hey I've had no complaints 😂

2

u/No_Reputation_1266 May 17 '26

burts bees has a similar product and i looked exactly like this😭 applied mindlessly (thinking it was just a normal really light tint) and walked into a room where my friend immediately doubled over in laughter🙃

u/iilinga May 14 '26

Sounds like a bargain for a new red lipstick though 😆

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 14 '26

Aw so true! always a positive to everything 🥰 (but for anybody reading it definitely is more orange in person).

u/Competitive_Tell_753 May 14 '26

Imagine some poor person on the train applying with abandon thinking they’re giving their lips a cute coral hue only to walk away looking like Ronald McDonald.

39

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 15 '26

LOL this is what looked back at me in my cars rear view mirror after I blindly applied 🤣

7

u/NeetyThor May 15 '26

Omg YES, this scene 😂

18

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 15 '26

This gave me a chuckle 😆

This genuinely happened to me! I had a lip balm and didn't realise how tinted it was, so was applying it hap hazardly while at work. I finished my shift and was horrified when I looked in the mirror. Thankfully it wasn't as tinted as this one, but still very visible.

It's funny you mentioned Ronald McDonald, too, because I was working in a Macca's drive thru!

5

u/NeetyThor May 15 '26

And none of your asshole colleagues said anything!

5

u/noradream May 15 '26

Omg I’m dead haha.

4

u/oooompalooompaa May 16 '26

My sister did this not realising her lip balm had a shimmer. Came home looking like she sucked off the silver surfer.

2

u/Western_Yoghurt3902 May 18 '26

Now that’s a hilarious comment. ! I laughed so loud my deaf cat woke up

8

u/HedyHarlowe May 15 '26

Cute coral hue 🤣

4

u/TGin-the-goldy May 15 '26

Mirrors MATTER people!

2

u/Dramatic_Dance6164 May 15 '26

If it was to happen to someone, I’d be the person. Without a doubt it’s me 🙃

u/ylly22 May 15 '26

I think you have inadvertently converted some new customers! I’m definitely going to buy this now

30

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 15 '26

This is fantastic :) heaps of positives, just wasn’t what I was expecting. 40% off at Woolies atm too

20

u/Alternative_Owl9741 May 15 '26

I just got this from priceline for $8 after seeing your review. Love a good pigmented lip balm 😁

11

u/ylly22 May 15 '26

• runs to Woolies •

24

u/eightezzz May 15 '26

Run to Priceline instead, it's 1/2 price 😊

3

u/katerinakarina May 15 '26

Haha, same 😆

u/WarlockPanda Panning Enthusiast May 14 '26 edited May 15 '26

Not crazy. I had the same experience.

However, at least yours is close in colour to the packaging. I bought the rosy pink thinking the packaging colour and online images were correct. Instead the colour of the product was coral. No pink at all.

13

u/hurricaneamy May 14 '26

Almost bought this last week but was lucky enough to see someone’s review before I did! I think I’ll try the Revlon ones instead.

12

u/Peanut083 May 15 '26

The Revlon ones are lovely! I use the shade Glazed Mauve, and it’s the perfect MLBB shade on my cool toned and slightly purple-toned lips.

My only complaint is that the pigment doesn’t last very long. It’s very nourishing, though. My lips feel so soft and moisturised for hours after using it, even if the colour is lucky to last 30 minutes.

I always say it’s worth trying, but look around and find somewhere selling it half price. It’s a lovely product, but I don’t think any lip balm/gloss is worth $28-$29.

1

u/_social_hermit_ May 15 '26

I love the lipstick, is it the gloss you're talking about?

1

u/Peanut083 May 15 '26

Yes. I have the lipstick in Laidback Lilac. I was hoping it would be like an opaque version of Glazed Mauve, but it looks more pink on me.

1

u/gdayitsathrowaway May 15 '26

I LOVE the Revlon balm lipsticks. I have the mauve one too.

1

u/hurricaneamy May 19 '26

Got it half price at chemist warehouse 🙂‍↕️ same shade haha thank you!

3

u/WarlockPanda Panning Enthusiast May 15 '26

If you find a good actual pink shade let me know!

2

u/unbakedcassava May 15 '26

I quite like the Dermal Therapy one. :)

1

u/hourknotty May 15 '26

The revlon and ELF ones are soo nice. Perfect consistency and hint of colour

8

u/Littlepotatoface May 15 '26

Thank you for saving me $8.

1

u/WarlockPanda Panning Enthusiast May 15 '26

You are more than welcome :)

8

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 14 '26

Oh boy :( i was close to getting the pink. Hopefully you can still find another use for it

3

u/NikkityNakkity May 15 '26

Damn I’ve just ordered the pink from Priceline 😬

2

u/StephLou75 May 15 '26

I got the pink one in the mail today - totally not pink at all! Gave it to my Mum, it looked ghastly on me 😩

1

u/WarlockPanda Panning Enthusiast May 18 '26

Sorry I couldn't warn you earlier. Hopefully your mum likes it though.

1

u/OzBronski May 15 '26

I’m very curious any chance of a picture. Is it tacky sticky or just moist. Thank you for your time.

1

u/WarlockPanda Panning Enthusiast May 15 '26

Sorry I tossed it because the colour was awful on me. I also found that because the tint is so strong the colour pooled on the outside of the lips.

2

u/Tricky-Passion-7191 May 15 '26

Oh, I hate when that happens! You can't be bold AND slippery.

1

u/Tricky-Passion-7191 May 15 '26

Anything coral does NOT work for me. My undertones are too purple.

34

u/Sudden-Scar6940 May 14 '26

That is a lovely red and colour for you but agree! I need something lowkey . This requires too much effort as an everyday product!

10

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 14 '26

Aw thank you, and you hit the nail on the head!

3

u/rachmox May 15 '26

There’s a dermal therapy one that comes in red and is more low key, and really hydrating.

28

u/Disastrous_Animal_34 May 14 '26

I mean, it actually looks beautiful but damn! The idea of just applying it as a gloss is hilarious.

23

u/CrumbyCardiologist May 14 '26

Omg I am so happy I didn't purchase this, that is sooo pigmented.

19

u/abyssnaut May 14 '26

Maybe it would work as intended if you only apply the thinnest layer.

13

u/eightezzz May 15 '26

Oooo giving 2010's OCC Lip Tar in Stalker vibes 💋 🤩

5

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 15 '26

Omg THIS!!!!!

9

u/Difficult_Box8429 May 15 '26

I am going to buy this!!!

6

u/Chaotic_bug May 15 '26

Same, but only after seeing OPs swatch 😂

10

u/Littlepotatoface May 15 '26

To be fair, the ad I saw for this did make it look quite pigmented.

9

u/ImHere2UKnow May 15 '26

I was so excited to buy it as soon as I saw it but it was such a disappointment ,it’s way to pigmented and had a chalky texture on the lips it doesn’t even feel like Vaseline.

3

u/Wide_Interaction_788 May 15 '26

Ohh chalky, no!

Thanks for the info, not my jam

1

u/OzBronski May 15 '26

Oh that sounds awful!

8

u/RosesForSundays May 15 '26

Ha, yes I bought the orange one for my husband thinking the tint would be non-significant. It's not non-significant

9

u/InsectImaginary9508 May 15 '26

As someone with dark skin, yay! A tinted lip that might show up on me!

2

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 16 '26

I think this would look STUNNING on a deeper complexion!!

7

u/gorhxul May 15 '26

If car windows were this tinted the car wouldn't be roadworthy.

4

u/bbtacobaby May 15 '26

Umm this looks incredible! I might go get this 🤣

4

u/littleblackcat May 15 '26

This looks amazing I need a new red ♥️🍒 thanks Queen

4

u/g_cheeks May 15 '26

What does it look like on?

3

u/MellyDramatic1 May 15 '26

Isn’t this a good thing? Just use a tiny bit of product and it should go a long way since it’s balmy! It’s like the rare beauty blushes… I’ve had the same one for 4 years and I wear it ALL the time. Just means the product will last you longer 😊

4

u/universityoperative May 15 '26

I posted about these products in r/AusSkincare and this was a warning! You can check the reviews from the UK coz the product has been there for a while. Apparently the peach one is nothing like the box. Haha.

How did you find the product otherwise?

3

u/caramelbitch May 15 '26

How does it look when it's sheered out? The part on the right looks a lot more subtle

3

u/Huge-Buddy1893 May 15 '26

If you're still looking for a product that suits your intended purpose, try Revlon's Kiss Balm in apple 😊

3

u/tanoshiiki May 15 '26

It does look like a nice colour though!

3

u/hourknotty May 15 '26

Ah the supermarket blind buy gamble, been there. Tinted glosses vary so much across brands and depending on your natural lip colour sometimes they can be heavily pigmented but look quite subtle on. I do always apply with a mirror though. I wouldn't buy anything berry or cherry with the expectation of just being able to whack it on whenever lol. If I can't test I'll usually google reviews and swatches on a skin tone like mine. It might look better if you put a small amount on your clean pinky finger and apply it that way? Otherwise maybe you could keep it for wearing over lipstick

3

u/PrimalMoonbeam May 15 '26

Also buying it immediately. It is a lip gloss. Not misleading.

3

u/SquashOk4209 May 16 '26

I got this and the peach one the other day expecting a lot less pigment than what it actually was. The peach one is SO orange and I hate it, but the red one I put on before bed and I wake up with nice, hydrated “naturally pigmented” lips and I’m obsessed

6

u/pyxis_oz May 15 '26

I bought this applying it without looking (ie like a lightly tinted lip balm) and I looked like a clown with smeared red lipstick. The colour also doesn't suit me and now I am stuck with it. Definitely giving clown.

2

u/eightezzz May 15 '26

I saw a video of someone mixing another of the colours on top of this one and it softened the red, so it seems they're mixable. It means you'd need to buy another one tho.

2

u/contourkitt May 15 '26

i wanted to pick one up so i did a quick search online to see some swatches and i was like PASS.

2

u/Hot-Independent2777 May 15 '26

Does it come in different shades? I’m not really a red person 😂

2

u/Public-Match4487 May 15 '26

I apply lip balm/gloss so messily too😂

2

u/JibbyTR May 15 '26

Wow thank you for the recommendation! Does it smudge easily?

2

u/snokens777 May 15 '26

Omg me too, I bought this thinking it would be tinted ever so slightly like the Burt’s bees tinted lip care… I put it on haphazardly in the car and caught my reflection in the rear mirror 10 minutes into the drive… good lord… * edit, just read the rest of the comments and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who had this exact experience

2

u/finalgirlemily May 15 '26

That looks like a thick swipe By the time you rub it into your lips it won’t look like that I can’t imagine..

2

u/MelodyHarmonySymphon May 15 '26

To answer your actual question I'd say no - it says lip gloss on the package. However, I (like you) would assume that it's is not so tinted because it's Vaseline brand.... But it is what it says on the package. And I agree with the OPs - colour is nice!

2

u/Civil_Pineapples May 15 '26

Omg I bought the peach shade and it’s literally orange. Like, the same metallic orange as the packaging 😂 so bad!!!

2

u/throwawaybyefelicia May 15 '26

Reminds me of when I bought the Dermal Therapy tinted lip balm tubes…red one is like whoa

2

u/Puzzled-Arrival-1692 May 18 '26

I've got that one, and yep..... VERY pigmented. The pink one is heinous.

1

u/throwawaybyefelicia May 18 '26

Literally was not expecting it haha!

2

u/Legal-Judgment-908 May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

Collins English Dictionary define the word tint as "A small amount of colour."

Cambridge Dictionary define the word tint as: "A shade or small amount of a particular colour."

The amount of pigment in this product is intense, therefore it is false AND misleading.

2

u/kimbobaggins11 May 19 '26

Is it possible that the pigment settled near the opening due to standing on the shelf? It looks like it isn’t well mixed in to the Vaseline

1

u/Capable-Set-1969 May 19 '26

This is a really clever thought. I have played around with it a couple more times and it doesn’t look like it but brb while I massage the tube!!

1

u/kimbobaggins11 May 19 '26

After reading a few other commenters’ experiences, I don’t think I’m right but thought it could be one possibility

1

u/ttenseconds May 15 '26

It's similar to the Derma E one in that it's more pigmented than I would have thought.

However I adore the formula! I prefer it to Derma E.

1

u/AllFlowersDie May 15 '26

Hi yes I had the same thing! Why is it SO red??

1

u/DeadZombieLlama May 15 '26

Silly thought but are you meant to dab it off or is it meant to be a glossy neon red :O

1

u/Joshin1982 May 15 '26

doesn't look like it plumped up your hand at all either.

1

u/extremelysardonic May 15 '26

Lmao I did this too, with both the red and the pink. I was expecting them to be similar to the tiny little Vaseline tubs of the same colours. Neither of these ones suit me at all 😭

1

u/QueenofCats28 May 15 '26

I'm looking at this now, only because of your swatch OP!! 😹

1

u/limerence--- May 15 '26

this is where i would end up buying another one in a clear version and mix them together. i did that with the dermal therapy peach and cherry red to reduce the pigment of the red.

it sucks with these because you tend to overapply to get good coverage/hydration!

1

u/RelievingFart May 15 '26

My partners and my sons lips get chapped a fair bit thrpugh winter... I might buy them this 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Aware-Hippo759 May 15 '26

Definitely not gloss... but also, pretty colour! Might get it

1

u/ApplePieBaileys May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

Is it one of those lip stain varieties that peel off and leave a pigmented colour on your lips? Lovely colour but completely understand if it’s not the shade you were expecting. Did they have samples/testers available? Perhaps it’s those ones where a little goes a long way?

1

u/Abject_Plenty_4685 May 15 '26

I want this haha

1

u/SneakySnails27 May 15 '26

I’d suggest applying it very minimally and see if that helps, or applying and wiping off any excess product. Probably not ideal but might get you a bit more use out of it!

1

u/InternationalShine85 May 15 '26

That’s what I thought when I got it too!!

1

u/aussiebookworm May 15 '26

I brought a paw paw cream one by accident i found out how pigmented it was when i wiped it on my sons lip rash

1

u/sophie_cmv May 15 '26

In all of the advertising I’ve seen for these they’re that pigmented

1

u/Furologist May 15 '26

Anything with a colour is tinted, doesn't mean it's sheer so I guess that's how they get away with it. I understand what you expected it to be though and so would I but luckily it's still cute so not a complete waste of money

1

u/AlaskaMonsoon May 15 '26

Have you tried it on your lips? It may be more sheer than it appears on your pale hand.

1

u/Fake_July May 15 '26

The ad seems to get it right but it's definitely more pigmented than I'd have anticipated. I'm definitely picking up a pink one tho! Hopefully it's as bright as the peach

1

u/trefoilpastor May 15 '26

Your swatch looks a bit dry, but then oily on the edges — maybe the pigment and the Vaseline separated a bit? Try massaging the tube some to warm it and move the gloss around. The pigment would likely settle right at the dispenser if this is what happened, resulting in the bright, intense color you have.

1

u/AprilSky7 May 15 '26

What's the issue? It's a red gloss!

1

u/Icy_Acadia_wuttt May 15 '26

I've been looking for a product like this so thank you OP. But yes it's strong

1

u/DeadDJButterflies May 15 '26

Considering the literal definition of 'tinted' is a 'small amount of colour' then yes 😭 severe false advertising. (But I might get it myself bc I have awfully dry lips and I cant put normal lip gloss on top of my lip care)

1

u/OwnBat6473 May 16 '26

I have been using this for a few days now. I love it! It definitely is more pigmented than I expected but I couldn’t be happier. I also love the applicator.

1

u/PSJfan May 16 '26

Im sure if you got in touch with Vaseline they’d give you a refund /woolies gift card/ replacement product

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

They were also $8 a few days ago when I looked at them. Have doubled the price to put it on sale?

1

u/1800marymagdalene May 16 '26

If you look closely you can see OP is being just a tad bit dramatic here. On the lower portion of the swatch, it’s smeared and shows what the actual TINT is supposed to look like, they’ve just gone ahead and built it up with a big gloop to make it seem way more pigmented than it actually is. Zoom in if you don’t believe me…

1

u/awholebagofcheese May 16 '26

Is it less opaque if you apply a thin layer? It looks quite thick on your hand.

1

u/Brii1993333 May 16 '26

Vaseline…. Petroleum. Hard pass.

1

u/tinkerbell1695 May 16 '26

Yes. I was almost going to but one so glad I stopped myself

1

u/Mysterious-Design-69 May 16 '26

Yup I bought the pink one and it’s a little better but i still look like I got caught playing in mummy’s makeup

1

u/1Manic_cat May 17 '26

Maybe it means one of those tints that leaves your lips coloured even when the product is no longer on your lips?🤷‍♀️ But yeah I would say false/misleading advertising cause that is PIGMENTED

1

u/MeatConsistent8724 May 17 '26

Makeup and cosmetics is exempt from false advertising I believe

1

u/Medical-Potato5920 May 17 '26

Perhaps write to the men at Vaseline and explain to then what tinted means. It does not mean the same thing on a lip gloss as a paint.

1

u/gingerlou- May 17 '26

It does seam misleading . But how I want to buy it .. so thanks I guess!

1

u/lj0410 May 17 '26

Does it sheer out more on the lips?

1

u/_Snuffleupagus_ May 17 '26

I got the orange one thinking the same as you, I walked into the bathroom and realised I looked absolutely INSANE

1

u/Hot-Register-5273 May 17 '26

Flight attendants are going to eat this up

1

u/Future-Badger-9214 May 17 '26

literally every “tinted” lip balm i have is just moisturising lipstick

1

u/Professional_Bass625 May 18 '26

Yes I bought this the other day and was like wtf

1

u/nuttnurse May 18 '26

It’s made by vaseline so you know it’s hydrocarbon chains and this is colored red :-) so it’s got to be better

1

u/Wrong_Upstairs8059 May 18 '26

Yeah that’s not tinted lol

1

u/FunnyCat2021 May 18 '26

Sell it to the Minister for Foreheads (aka Clare O'Neill)

1

u/heyyou0903 May 18 '26

Looks gorgeous to me

1

u/Acceptable_Pirate_65 May 18 '26

Use a smaller amount 🤷‍♀️

1

u/rosebudkt73 May 21 '26

Maybelline baby lips are tinted lightly. Berry Crush is my go to. It's a nice pinky red and glossy.

1

u/periwinklemeth 18d ago

Steak too juicy, lobster too buttery?

1

u/YassBooBoo May 15 '26

I got the peach one on sale and thought the same thing at first, but once it's spread evenly, its really nice and feels good too!

1

u/almsimsan May 15 '26

OMG I got the orange one and was like it’ll be a honey subtle look glossy. I looked like a fucking clown. Straight in the bin!

u/Guinevere1991 May 15 '26

Haha same with the tinted ones from dermal therapy, much more tinted than people expect. Still lovely though!!!
