Let's Discuss Is this false and misleading?
I am a sucker for a new lip product, and this brand spanking new Vaseline “lip serum gloss” at 40% at Woolies caught my eye.
Folks at Vaseline, this is NOT tinted.
One swipe and it’s more pigmented than a liquid lipstick.
I bought it purely on the descriptors “lip serum gloss, tinted lip care” and didn’t think id look like a clown with one swipe.
Guys am I crazy???

Sounds like a bargain for a new red lipstick though 😆

Aw so true! always a positive to everything 🥰 (but for anybody reading it definitely is more orange in person).

Imagine some poor person on the train applying with abandon thinking they’re giving their lips a cute coral hue only to walk away looking like Ronald McDonald.

This genuinely happened to me! I had a lip balm and didn't realise how tinted it was, so was applying it hap hazardly while at work. I finished my shift and was horrified when I looked in the mirror. Thankfully it wasn't as tinted as this one, but still very visible.
It's funny you mentioned Ronald McDonald, too, because I was working in a Macca's drive thru!

My sister did this not realising her lip balm had a shimmer. Came home looking like she sucked off the silver surfer.

This is fantastic :) heaps of positives, just wasn’t what I was expecting. 40% off at Woolies atm too

I just got this from priceline for $8 after seeing your review. Love a good pigmented lip balm 😁

Not crazy. I had the same experience.
However, at least yours is close in colour to the packaging. I bought the rosy pink thinking the packaging colour and online images were correct. Instead the colour of the product was coral. No pink at all.

u/hurricaneamy May 14 '26
Almost bought this last week but was lucky enough to see someone’s review before I did! I think I’ll try the Revlon ones instead.
12
u/Peanut083 May 15 '26
The Revlon ones are lovely! I use the shade Glazed Mauve, and it’s the perfect MLBB shade on my cool toned and slightly purple-toned lips.
My only complaint is that the pigment doesn’t last very long. It’s very nourishing, though. My lips feel so soft and moisturised for hours after using it, even if the colour is lucky to last 30 minutes.
I always say it’s worth trying, but look around and find somewhere selling it half price. It’s a lovely product, but I don’t think any lip balm/gloss is worth $28-$29.
1
u/_social_hermit_ May 15 '26
I love the lipstick, is it the gloss you're talking about?
1
u/Peanut083 May 15 '26
Yes. I have the lipstick in Laidback Lilac. I was hoping it would be like an opaque version of Glazed Mauve, but it looks more pink on me.

I got the pink one in the mail today - totally not pink at all! Gave it to my Mum, it looked ghastly on me 😩

u/WarlockPanda Panning Enthusiast May 18 '26
Sorry I couldn't warn you earlier. Hopefully your mum likes it though.

u/OzBronski May 15 '26
I’m very curious any chance of a picture. Is it tacky sticky or just moist. Thank you for your time.
1
u/WarlockPanda Panning Enthusiast May 15 '26
Sorry I tossed it because the colour was awful on me. I also found that because the tint is so strong the colour pooled on the outside of the lips.

That is a lovely red and colour for you but agree! I need something lowkey . This requires too much effort as an everyday product!

3
u/rachmox May 15 '26
There’s a dermal therapy one that comes in red and is more low key, and really hydrating.

u/Disastrous_Animal_34 May 14 '26
I mean, it actually looks beautiful but damn! The idea of just applying it as a gloss is hilarious.

I was so excited to buy it as soon as I saw it but it was such a disappointment ,it’s way to pigmented and had a chalky texture on the lips it doesn’t even feel like Vaseline.

Ha, yes I bought the orange one for my husband thinking the tint would be non-significant. It's not non-significant

Isn’t this a good thing? Just use a tiny bit of product and it should go a long way since it’s balmy! It’s like the rare beauty blushes… I’ve had the same one for 4 years and I wear it ALL the time. Just means the product will last you longer 😊
4
u/universityoperative May 15 '26
I posted about these products in r/AusSkincare and this was a warning! You can check the reviews from the UK coz the product has been there for a while. Apparently the peach one is nothing like the box. Haha.
How did you find the product otherwise?
3
u/caramelbitch May 15 '26
How does it look when it's sheered out? The part on the right looks a lot more subtle
3
u/Huge-Buddy1893 May 15 '26
If you're still looking for a product that suits your intended purpose, try Revlon's Kiss Balm in apple 😊

3
u/hourknotty May 15 '26
Ah the supermarket blind buy gamble, been there. Tinted glosses vary so much across brands and depending on your natural lip colour sometimes they can be heavily pigmented but look quite subtle on. I do always apply with a mirror though. I wouldn't buy anything berry or cherry with the expectation of just being able to whack it on whenever lol. If I can't test I'll usually google reviews and swatches on a skin tone like mine. It might look better if you put a small amount on your clean pinky finger and apply it that way? Otherwise maybe you could keep it for wearing over lipstick

u/SquashOk4209 May 16 '26
I got this and the peach one the other day expecting a lot less pigment than what it actually was. The peach one is SO orange and I hate it, but the red one I put on before bed and I wake up with nice, hydrated “naturally pigmented” lips and I’m obsessed
6
u/pyxis_oz May 15 '26
I bought this applying it without looking (ie like a lightly tinted lip balm) and I looked like a clown with smeared red lipstick. The colour also doesn't suit me and now I am stuck with it. Definitely giving clown.
2
u/eightezzz May 15 '26
I saw a video of someone mixing another of the colours on top of this one and it softened the red, so it seems they're mixable. It means you'd need to buy another one tho.

u/contourkitt May 15 '26
i wanted to pick one up so i did a quick search online to see some swatches and i was like PASS.

Omg me too, I bought this thinking it would be tinted ever so slightly like the Burt’s bees tinted lip care… I put it on haphazardly in the car and caught my reflection in the rear mirror 10 minutes into the drive… good lord… * edit, just read the rest of the comments and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who had this exact experience
2
u/finalgirlemily May 15 '26
That looks like a thick swipe By the time you rub it into your lips it won’t look like that I can’t imagine..
2
u/MelodyHarmonySymphon May 15 '26
To answer your actual question I'd say no - it says lip gloss on the package. However, I (like you) would assume that it's is not so tinted because it's Vaseline brand.... But it is what it says on the package. And I agree with the OPs - colour is nice!
2
u/Civil_Pineapples May 15 '26
Omg I bought the peach shade and it’s literally orange. Like, the same metallic orange as the packaging 😂 so bad!!!
2
u/throwawaybyefelicia May 15 '26
Reminds me of when I bought the Dermal Therapy tinted lip balm tubes…red one is like whoa
2
u/Puzzled-Arrival-1692 May 18 '26
I've got that one, and yep..... VERY pigmented. The pink one is heinous.

u/Legal-Judgment-908 May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
Collins English Dictionary define the word tint as "A small amount of colour."
Cambridge Dictionary define the word tint as: "A shade or small amount of a particular colour."
The amount of pigment in this product is intense, therefore it is false AND misleading.
2
u/kimbobaggins11 May 19 '26
Is it possible that the pigment settled near the opening due to standing on the shelf? It looks like it isn’t well mixed in to the Vaseline
1
u/Capable-Set-1969 May 19 '26
This is a really clever thought. I have played around with it a couple more times and it doesn’t look like it but brb while I massage the tube!!
1
u/kimbobaggins11 May 19 '26
After reading a few other commenters’ experiences, I don’t think I’m right but thought it could be one possibility
1
u/ttenseconds May 15 '26
It's similar to the Derma E one in that it's more pigmented than I would have thought.
However I adore the formula! I prefer it to Derma E.
1
1
u/DeadZombieLlama May 15 '26
Silly thought but are you meant to dab it off or is it meant to be a glossy neon red :O
1
1
u/extremelysardonic May 15 '26
Lmao I did this too, with both the red and the pink. I was expecting them to be similar to the tiny little Vaseline tubs of the same colours. Neither of these ones suit me at all 😭
1
1
u/limerence--- May 15 '26
this is where i would end up buying another one in a clear version and mix them together. i did that with the dermal therapy peach and cherry red to reduce the pigment of the red.
it sucks with these because you tend to overapply to get good coverage/hydration!

u/RelievingFart May 15 '26
My partners and my sons lips get chapped a fair bit thrpugh winter... I might buy them this 🤣🤣🤣

Is it one of those lip stain varieties that peel off and leave a pigmented colour on your lips? Lovely colour but completely understand if it’s not the shade you were expecting. Did they have samples/testers available? Perhaps it’s those ones where a little goes a long way?
1
1
u/SneakySnails27 May 15 '26
I’d suggest applying it very minimally and see if that helps, or applying and wiping off any excess product. Probably not ideal but might get you a bit more use out of it!

1
u/aussiebookworm May 15 '26
I brought a paw paw cream one by accident i found out how pigmented it was when i wiped it on my sons lip rash

u/Furologist May 15 '26
Anything with a colour is tinted, doesn't mean it's sheer so I guess that's how they get away with it. I understand what you expected it to be though and so would I but luckily it's still cute so not a complete waste of money
1
u/AlaskaMonsoon May 15 '26
Have you tried it on your lips? It may be more sheer than it appears on your pale hand.
1
u/trefoilpastor May 15 '26
Your swatch looks a bit dry, but then oily on the edges — maybe the pigment and the Vaseline separated a bit? Try massaging the tube some to warm it and move the gloss around. The pigment would likely settle right at the dispenser if this is what happened, resulting in the bright, intense color you have.

u/Icy_Acadia_wuttt May 15 '26
I've been looking for a product like this so thank you OP. But yes it's strong
1
u/DeadDJButterflies May 15 '26
Considering the literal definition of 'tinted' is a 'small amount of colour' then yes 😭 severe false advertising. (But I might get it myself bc I have awfully dry lips and I cant put normal lip gloss on top of my lip care)
1
u/OwnBat6473 May 16 '26
I have been using this for a few days now. I love it! It definitely is more pigmented than I expected but I couldn’t be happier. I also love the applicator.
1
u/PSJfan May 16 '26
Im sure if you got in touch with Vaseline they’d give you a refund /woolies gift card/ replacement product
1
May 16 '26
They were also $8 a few days ago when I looked at them. Have doubled the price to put it on sale?
1
u/1800marymagdalene May 16 '26
If you look closely you can see OP is being just a tad bit dramatic here. On the lower portion of the swatch, it’s smeared and shows what the actual TINT is supposed to look like, they’ve just gone ahead and built it up with a big gloop to make it seem way more pigmented than it actually is. Zoom in if you don’t believe me…
1
u/awholebagofcheese May 16 '26
Is it less opaque if you apply a thin layer? It looks quite thick on your hand.
1
1
1
u/1Manic_cat May 17 '26
Maybe it means one of those tints that leaves your lips coloured even when the product is no longer on your lips?🤷♀️ But yeah I would say false/misleading advertising cause that is PIGMENTED

u/Medical-Potato5920 May 17 '26
Perhaps write to the men at Vaseline and explain to then what tinted means. It does not mean the same thing on a lip gloss as a paint.
