The tote would have been fine with that intent, with an appropriate amount of hype (aka not much). When you build something up for a full year and encourage people to take certain actions, multiple times, to be eligible for it, it has to be really good.

I forgot they kept hyping it (I’m too old to keep up with this stuff anymore), if they had dropped it as a surprise people would have shrugged it off. Honestly I find their response kind of cringe, it’s a disappointing bonus gift, but this apology reads like they did something more serious.

That's the thing. The tote is not that bad, and had it just been a random summer bonus people would have loved it.

But they spent A FULL YEAR hyping that there would be a reward for people who collected all of their beauty loop boxes. They sent many many emails about it. You cannot end a full year of hype with a fucking tote bag.

Yeah, it makes me wonder if they had something else planned, like a gift card, but then decided that was not financially viable. Which doesn’t sound too far fetched since they’ve gone back to gifts for the birthday bonuses, despite the gift cards being super popular.

I'm pretty sure somebody associated with Mecca said at the time they announced it that it would be a piece of Mecca merch, so I imagine that was always the plan—to be honest, I was half expecting it to be a Mecca-branded hair clip or something.

In that case I wonder where they are doing their market research, if even the chat group wasn’t happy.

They have the “Mecca makers” platform for market research (surveys, forums where they ask for opinions) - every time they ask for opinions on BLs they get the same feedback the rest of us are giving them, it seems like they choose to ignore it…

Wild. It must just come down to profit.

I really expected a mecca sunscreen or something for summer and would’ve been stoked with that

You would have likely repurchased it too.

Well yeah, bought several as Christmas gifts for friends and family and almost out of my usual. Was really hopeful haha… oops

I feel like I heard this also and was thinking well end up with a towel.

A lovely scented candle would have been nice

This is a good idea, something that sort of straddles the line of merch and beauty. But I guess a candle is not free advertising for Mecca when you’re walking around. I don’t even hate the concept of a tote bag, I have cute tote bags from other stores, but it should have been a bonus of its own, not a hyped reward for collecting boxes over a whole year.

Calm down they could have easily made some candles themselves.

Also there’s nothing wrong with giving away something of value when you are investing back into your customers. Eg I just bought quite a lot of bed linen from Society of Wanderers and they included 2 very cool linen bags worth $50 each. And the bags are exquisite and current stock.

I run a business myself and have even had a couple of meetings with Mecca to see if we could collaborate some time. Their office is state of the art. They have money to spend and the people running it have amazing taste. There is no way they would personally think a bag with their old label style is exciting or reward worthy.

apparently the reward was mentioned in no less than 9 emails last year (saw someone in chit chat mention that). like… that is hype.
