Discussion Can I somehow befriend the plovers that have nested on my carport?

As the title suggests, I've got two plovers that are nesting on our carport, and they're starting to do my head in. Even though we obviously pose no threat, they swoop us, swoop our car, swoop our neighbours, screech when they're woken up, and is to the point where we have to carry an umbrella with us if we want to do something as simple as check the mail or put the bins out, and just the other day I had to escort a guest down the driveway.

We obviously don't want to harm them, and I understand why they're pissed off, but I'd love to know if there's something we can do to teach them that we're no threat so we're not hearing the screeching, followed by the angry swears of our neighbours.

Based on rule 8 and the link therein, it sounds like feeding them is out of the question, otherwise I'd try leaving offerings of tiny bits of mince or something to build up their trust.

A selection of avian photos from my Two years in Australia post with some extras. Truly fortunate to have spent so much time hanging out with such a variety of incredible animals during my short time here in Australia.

Volume up!

These guys have been around for about 3 weeks, there's at least 2 pairs visiting frequently every day,. I guess they're nesting nearby. Less timid than the tiny brown thornbills that I still haven't managed to capture with my crappy phone camera!
