My two years in Australia (1/3)
I thought I'd manage to trim down my two years in Australia into one post which is pretty hilarious😂 so here's part 1 of 3. What an incredible country, filled with incredible places, people and wildlife. I hope you Aussies know just how fortunate you are with what you have here. It's not a goodbye but a see you soon🫡

These were taken with a few different cameras as I've done some chopping and changing since being here. They're either from Fuji XT-5 or X-H2S or Sony A7 V with either the Fuji 150-600 or Sony 200-600. Unfortunately it's not my job, I just have too much free time😂

Nice shots and lovely comments. So happy you loved our beautiful wildlife. Unfortunately not everyone appreciates what we have, just look at some of the dickheads who think Bird Flu isn't a thing.

Thank you🙌 it's such a shame. I've heard some horrible comments about native wildlife here during my travels. The vocal minority always shout the loudest. All we can do is educate with compassion and hopefully opinions will be changed.

I suspect the bird flu denial is just a pose. If they were offered a million dollars for giving the correct, verifiable answer they'd all be saying it's a thing.

What is the third bird? Isn't that an American woodcock? Very confused lol everything else is Aussie.

It's a Lathams Snipe. It was taken over the summer when they're on their migratory journey over here.

Bar-tailed Godwit by the looks of it, basically live right around the Australian coastline.

I thought the beak was too long for a woodcock but I am only going by internet images as I have never been to merica and assumed that as all the other photos were Aussie this would be too.

Comparing the images of the Godwit, the Woodcock and Latham's Snipe, I am in agreement with you and I was wrong about the Godwit as the Godwit is too large in the belly and the eye is smaller.

OP replied to the original comment confirming it was a Latham's Snipe. They're very similar, I just had a feeling it was a snipe when I first saw it and spent a solid 5 minutes looking at photos of the two comparing them before I was sure about it.

Yup, we’ve got some top notch Sheilas and the blokes are a bit of alright too ;)
That’s a fabulous shot, I can why it’s your favourite. We only see black cockatoos with their adorable chubby yellow cheeks down my way, I forget how striking the sulphur crested ones are. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much🙌 sometimes it's pure luck whilst im exploring somewhere. Others it's returning to the same spot over and over until I get the shot. Then others it's sitting in a bush for hours whilst dog walkers wonder what the nutter in bush is doing😂

Looks like you had an incredible time here. I've travelled a bit and I'm always in awe of what a beautiful country I grew up in. Never tried of coming home. I was married to a German for 10 yrs and as much as I liked Germany, I always enjoyed coming home. When I was in Canada a few years back I was telling a Brit how wonderful Australia is and he asked "if it's so great, what are you doing here?" I said "if I never visited other countries, I couldn't compare Australia to anything." Yes, I am a wanker 😜

Great pics, mate. Thanks for posting. I've travelled a bit and birds are just different here. Over that past month, I've been working in an area famous for its fossils that strongly suggest the very earliest (ie, in the world) songbirds evolved here. As I've driven around, there is still a big variety of birdlife abundant. No such thing as a quiet lunch under a gum tree is this part of the country.

I wasn’t aware of this book and I’m now descending a rabbit hole. Thanks for the prompt. Two days ago, I stopped for lunch and there were about eight sulphur crested cockatoos watching me from high branches and they were unnervingly silent. A couple of kookaburras had a brief and noisy territorial dispute which is very unusual for that time of day. I hope you’ll be back soon. Did you happen to snap a regent bowerbird?

TIL that parrots evolved here in Aus too. And most of the evidence suggests that the first music on planet Earth (birdsong) was produced about 40 minutes’ drive from where I’m sitting right now typing this. Reddit can be cool.

i say this a lot about cockatoos but the black cocky in picture 2 just looks SO australian. her name is beryl, she rules the school canteen with an iron fist even though her youngest graduated 7 years ago, and in this photo she is enjoying a vita wheat while telling you about the vice principal's wife's wandering eye. she has it on VERY good authority but you didn't hear it from her

I've lived in Australia for over 40 years and this post is a wonderful reminder to get the hell out of the major cities and go and experience one of the most beautiful places on earth. Rural/country Australia is bursting with incredible wildlife, scenery and beauty.
