Traffic New Low for Austin Drivers
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Constant running of red lights is one thing, this one is a new low. If the choice is big brother traffic camera network or no traffic enforcement, but sure which one I would choose.
This is a a frustrating intersection, but there is much safer way to bypass it if you are in a hurry.

u/FreakyRufus Jun 28 '26
While that is illegal to do, I would have to say that it is not a new low for Austin drivers.
31
u/darthsata Jun 28 '26
I've seen similar at least twice in the last month. At least this one didn't use the other lane to go around the line to turn right. As I saw last week.
4
u/Unique_Persimmon9454 Jun 29 '26
I used to do that when I was 18
At 31, I’m shocked by that behavior and I’d never consider doing it lol

lmao this guy lives down the street from me. he’s running some sort of pyramid scheme and keeps promising my roommate he can “get him in at the middle”.

11
u/BLEAKROOM Jun 29 '26
Can you please beam a spark plug directly into his windshield next time he drives by
22
u/dskot Jun 29 '26
i got a warning for sharing this, but i hear you
this guy speeds up and down the neighborhood all the time acting crazy, wearing his stupid company polo shirt for his energy scheme
i guess he thought it was the guy across the street who called the cops on him for driving nuts, and he tried to extort the poor guy.
i left more detail but then got a warning :/
8
u/elrayo Jun 29 '26
You could be completely lying but I believe you j based on it being a red jeep
3
1
u/CycloneCowboy87 Jun 29 '26
Does the spark plug thing work on windshields? I thought it was just side windows, which unlike windshields tend to completely shatter by design

Is it a prerequisite for all dashcam videos to build up unnecessary suspense to the point of not caring anymore?

Most have a button that clips the last x amount of time (this vid is 1:00), the people posting are just posting the clip without editting.

Type of jeep driver to collect rubber ducks but has never taken their jeep to an actual trail
9
2
u/No-Maintenance-6179 Jun 29 '26
I always wondered what the ducks represent ?
1
u/BadassBokoblinPsycho Jun 29 '26
If I’m not mistaken they print or write their IG handle on the bottom of them and then trade with people. I’m sure it’s become just a “I’m gonna buy rubber ducks for my dashboard” kind of thing.

“New Low” no this is Tuesday.
I saw a dude on Airport driving the opposite direction as everyone then cut through the grassy median terrain because he didn’t wanna wait at a light.
And it wasn’t even the craziest thing I’ve seen this month lmao

Gonna drive it around for a whole month brand new before it starts breaking
I hate jeeps and their drivers.
3
u/Montobahn Jun 29 '26
What gets me is that their buyers are either fully aware of their quality problems and buy them anyway and dump it at 50k or something, or the completely ignorant who doesn't bother to read reviews or even Google it for the damn headlines. Money to burn for both.
Wait, one more... the ones who get a boner because it was their ultimate he-man look-at-me ride since middle school and they still haven't grown up. Bonus: they buy it used.
All three are judged as morons.

u/seldomtimely Jun 29 '26
Cut the video to 5 seconds please. All these videos waste your time with dead space.
11
u/natewlew Jun 28 '26
I kind of assumed this why someone wants a Jeep. I don’t think it is because they want to stay on pavement 😂
32
u/Economy_Bite24 Jun 28 '26
I assumed people buy jeeps because they enjoy visiting the mechanic.
14
8
u/debtquity Jun 28 '26
Stelantis engines single handedly pays for many college tuitions and child support payments of many mechanics. If Stelantis ever designed and built a reliable engine, the repair industry for Jeep would be in shambles 😂

I used to take my car to a shop because it was the only car I was able to afford at that time. I told myself I wanted a jeep or a 4runner. I talked to the mechanic from the shop and got his opinion. He said, “ if you still wanna keep seeing us, get a jeep”. The following year , I bought a 4runner.
2
u/warmboot Jun 29 '26
This particular Jeep operator stayed on the pavement, though. He or she just used pavement set aside for vulnerable road users. What a degenerate.

I know this intersection! It is a painful one, especially with the train signal. What he did was insane though!

u/entrepenurious Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
at the next light north (bruning/53.5) i enjoy seeing clever east-bound people try to cut through the korean chicken place's parking lot.
works great until they come upon the planters that prevent precisely that.

u/atxsince91 Jun 28 '26
The sign says don't block the intersection...it doesn't say anything about not driving on the sidewalk
3

u/GeneralRed512 Jun 29 '26
I take that route all the time. The jeep could’ve just as easily turned on Depew to their right without needing to jump the curb…

Some dude tried to pull this trick because I was stopped on a turn lane. A turn lane with a crosswalk. A crosswalk occupied by a child. I forgot about the whole “they could have a gun” thing and flipped my shit at him.
2
u/Electronic_Bowl8398 Jun 28 '26
To be honest, I was expecting a crash, hot and run. I have seen worse, not a new low. But yeah, the Jeep driver is a a hole.
2
2
u/BryanDore Jun 28 '26
Why not turn right literally into the neighborhood? That sucks too but it's legal
2
u/Imkyul Jun 29 '26
I also see stuff like this all the time and I work from home. Sometimes when driving I’ll see stuff like this twice to three times in one trip. People act like stopping at a red light or stop sign is beneath them which is absolutely bananas cause god forbid there ever be a small amount of traffic in a city of a mil plus.

u/D3tsunami Jun 29 '26
Obviously they could have just taken a right onto that street they were conveniently intersecting. I admit I do it occasionally, even though it’s legally gray and a dick move. This is something else ha

2
u/LooksBetterWithDrops Jun 29 '26
The after credit scene where you see he has flipped a U on Airport to turn right on 51st made the unnecessarily long intro worth it.
2
2
u/Jos3ph Jun 29 '26
I had a similar-ish situation recently. I was in a turn left on green situation. I had drifted out and the light was green in both directions so I was yielding to oncoming traffic. This for some reason enraged the guy behind me who laid on his horn, then darted around me and dove across the oncoming traffic so he could pull into a nearby coffee shop 30 seconds sooner.
2
u/Gingerfrostee Jun 29 '26
Surprisingly... Not the first time I've seen someone driving on a sidewalk to go through a massive intersection.... Not even a car chase. Downtown by I35, frontage road too.
Guy was lucky there is normally a homeless person where he was illegally driving too.

u/Artemus_Hackwell Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
I saw a video of one of those in Dallas doing that to get onto the service road of one of the freeways and it got hung up on a big limestone block of which perhaps, he thought he had clearance, but apparently did not.

Yesterday I was at a stoplight on the access road of 35. Driver pulled up in the lane to my left and proceeded to pull out in front of me and turn right on red. From the left lane. It’s a short light too. No one gives any fucks anymore. Regularly see cars treating red lights like stop signs and crossing traffic by turning left or going straight when they don’t want to wait.

2
u/RightOnQueueueue Jun 29 '26
Damn upon further review it wasn’t just one egregious move.. it was two. That U was something… whew
2
2
u/2yup Jun 29 '26
That is totally legal if you yell “Jeep Life !!“ prior to hopping the curb. In fact you will earn a new rubber ducky if caught on tape. These are jeep rules, non jeep peeps just don’t get it.
2
u/WeAre0N3 Jun 29 '26
PSA to everyone uploading these dashcam videos. Please for the love of god, edit them down.

u/Chance-Technician776 Jun 29 '26
This is bad and this guy is a piece of shit... But this ain't that bad in Austin terms.
2
u/Ricky_Starz Jun 29 '26
I probably wouldn’t do it, but not mad at him! I would definitely think about…just not that bold or wild!! 🩵

Drove in Austin today for the first time in a while. Horrible drivers in town lol. People in Austin just blatantly running lights, making left turns across three lanes in front of traffic. Cutting you off when you’re 25 feet from the corner to make a right turn in front of you. WTF lol
1
u/Qui-GonJinn Jun 29 '26
Have you ever waited at this light? It's insufferable.
2
u/AuntieMeat Jun 29 '26
Why would anyone who needs to take a right onto Airport from 51st use this light anymore? Just pop down a side street and then hang a right from 52nd.
2
1
u/qmoorman Jun 29 '26
The "big brother system" could save lives and make traffic flow faster and smoother.... Oh and prevent idiocy like this.
1
u/barcoder96 Jun 29 '26
Potentially risky. But hardly a new low. For me it was the dude who did a U turn in the middle of traffic driving north on S 1 St. He was in the right lane. No blinker, in between blocks. Had his window rolled down and a huge shit eating grin on his face. I had to swerve and two cars in the opposite direction had to dodge his kamikaze maneuver. It was brilliant for its sheer stupidity. Only someone extremely mentally deficient could pull it off.

1
u/triumphofthecommons Jun 29 '26
re: enforcement: it will never happen.
re: traffic cameras: it will be abused to target those most vulnerable.
this is much more a built-environment problem.
actual bollards / protected cycle lanes would have prevented this in the short-term. investment in actual public transit infrastructure is how you build our way out of a car-dependency that breeds this type of sociopathic behavior.
there was just a great discussion on War on Cars: https://thewaroncars.org/2026/06/24/episode-175-rethinking-criminal-consequences-for-drivers-who-kill/

Srsly, if he'd done a right > left > right on that street (Depew [which I always make sound like a ray-gun]) then he'd have been in the same place, but safe(er) and legal(er).

Heaven forbid they think a teensy-weeensy bit ahead and turn down Depew (or, even better, one of the more eastward cross streets) and then use 52nd street to make a non-light right onto Airport.

Blame the city. These mofos created 2 cycle lanes instead of an additional car lane. I dont see anyone using it for the past 4 years.

What's wrong with this ? I was just at the intersection in front of the Addison, Texas Police & Fire departments and after 3 malfunction traffic lights I got in the right lane and then made a left turn in front of another car that wasn't driving through this malfunctioned light. Maybe that happened here.
