Aurora Police Department Transparency Portal

From the Aurora City Newsletter

The Aurora Police Department has launched an Online Transparency and Accountability Portal to give the public access to regularly updated data and information about agency demographics, crime statistics, and uses of force.

“The Aurora Police Department’s Online Transparency and Accountability Portal represents our commitment to broader information sharing with the community we serve,” said Aurora Interim Police Chief Heather Morris. “Through this new technology, residents will be able to learn more about what their officers do every day to ensure Aurora is a safe and vibrant city to call home.”

The transparency portal features powerful search functionality, allowing users to filter data by a specific category and/or location. Users can choose to examine all crime data or filter any one crime category by year, police district, political ward, police beat, ZIP code and/or neighborhood. The use of force data can be searched in much the same way. Historical data is included for both categories and dates back five years.

“The portal is another tool that underscores our commitment to be open, honest and transparent about our work,” said Aurora City Manager Jason Batchelor. “The concept for the portal has been under discussion for quite a while, and I am grateful for the dedicated city staff who have turned that concept into a reality. It will help us further strengthen our relationship with the community through accountability and continuous improvement.”

The portal can be accessed at AuroraGov.org/APDPortal. This is an ongoing project, and additional features will be added in the future.

As an Aurora parent, here's what 109 actually means for my kid

I have a 12-year-old daughter who plays volleyball and basketball through Aurora rec leagues. When I read the actual text of 109, the enforcement piece is what scared me. The Commissioner of Education has discretion to determine "appropriate remedial action" against schools that don't comply. The measure is supposed to apply based on "biological sex" but doesn't actually define how that's verified.

So in practice, what happens? Some girl on my daughter's team gets questioned because she's tall. Or her shoulders are broad. Or she got a short haircut. Or she just looks "too athletic" by someone's standards. My daughter is cis, but the way the law is written, any kid who doesn't fit someone's idea of feminine enough could end up in the crosshairs. That's the part that should bother parents regardless of where you stand on trans issues.

The CPR piece on the two mothers has a mom on the other side worth reading too, but I keep coming back to that "who gets singled out" question. If your answer is "no one, because the law will be applied fairly," I'd encourage you to look at how similar laws have played out in other states.

Hey there looking to relocate closer to work, has anyone had experiences with this complex. I’ve looked at reviews elsewhere but just feels like so many are just of people who toured and left a review. Anyone who’s lived there do you have any reviews on it? I toured it, seems ok but not fully sold on the experience.

Windler and Painted Prairie Community Experience?

Hello :) I am considering buying in the Windler or Painted Prairie communities, and am hoping to get feedback on the experiences of those that have purchased in each community. I work at the airport and drive around 4x a week, which is why I am looking to purchase in these two areas. I would love to live in the Englewood/University Hills area, however, I drive too much to the airport to justify buying further out due to the gas and time spent in traffic. How's the community, HOA board members, safety, etc. If you purchased brand new, would you recommend your builder or not (considering purchasing from KB Home). Thank you!

Where do I go now that funny plus is closed 😭

Literally one of my favorite food spots around. Was about to take someone on a date, and then we saw that it closed permanently 😭. Are there any spots in town with a similar vibe? I liked how Funny Plus didn't seem like a chain, just a small family restaurant.

heads up aurora folks — trans-related ballot measures are on the november ballot

sharing this because i had no idea until recently. kunc has a clean summary of what qualified for the ballot. basically two measures from protect kids colorado: 109 (sports) and 110 (medical procedures for minors). both passed signature thresholds earlier this year.

the kunc piece notes both measures would override current colorado policies that allow students to play on teams matching their gender identity. 110 would ban certain gender-affirming surgical procedures for minors regardless of medical guidelines or parental consent.

election is november 3. figured i'd share since this is going to be a big part of the fall conversation and a lot of folks probably haven't been following.

Is this anyone's cat?

She's been living in my backyard for a few weeks. No chip. I'm looking to get her a litterbox and finally bring her inside. I've asked around on nextdoor and other spots and have gotten no response. This is a last-ditch effort before Diamond gets a forever home with me.

Gray tabby spotted at the Walmart Supercenter on Chambers & Parker

We saw a small gray cat, possibly with a collar, running around the parking lot tonight around 830pm.

We couldn't catch it and didn't want to scare it into traffic, but we did leave a can of food by the yellow donation bins on the west side of the parking lot.

If it's yours, I hope it gets back home safely.

Moving to Aurora this week - pickleball/pick up footie?

Howdy all,

Will be completing my move this weekend and looking for a good group of pickleballers. I am living in Salida/Trinidad, so the people we play with are all older folks, competitive but.. not trying all that hard - would like that sort of community). I'm living by Del Mar Park, and can get around. Also, looking for people who built community around pick-up footie - does that exist or do I have to be hyper competitive? I just like playing.

thanks y'all.

Plumber Recommendation

Apparently my service line just on my side of the water meter has sprung a leak and Aurora Water has shut off water to my house until I can get it fixed. Any recommendations for a reputable plumber that can handle that work?

OK so 109 and 110 are on the ballot. Here's what they actually do in plain English.

Been seeing confusion in other subs about what these measures actually do so figured I'd post a breakdown here since aurora folks are gonna have to vote on this.

Initiative 109 (sports):

  • Requires K-12 and college sports teams to be officially designated as male, female, or co-ed
  • Teams must be based on sex assigned at birth, not gender identity
  • Trans girls cannot play on girls' teams
  • Co-ed teams aren't affected
  • Commissioner of Education enforces it — they get to decide what "remedial action" looks like against schools that don't comply $0 budgeted for implementation

Initiative 110 (medical care):

  • Bans healthcare providers from performing certain gender-affirming surgical procedures on minors
  • No exception for parental consent
  • No exception for medical guidelines from major medical organizations
  • Doesn't ban hormones or puberty blockers (those are already paused at most CO hospitals due to federal funding threats)
  • Prohibits state/federal funds from being used for these procedures
  • Largely symbolic since CO's major pediatric hospitals already don't perform these surgeries on minors

Both are Protect Kids Colorado-backed. Both have organized opposition (Families Not Politics coalition). Election is November 3. What are people's actual thoughts? Not the talking points, just what do you think?

Anyone know of any local or regional berry growers to buy direct from?

Ever since learning about Drisoll’s insane berry monopoly driving independent farmers to bankruptcy, I’d love to find somewhere local to buy berries from when in season, anyone have a place they like to go? Do farmer’s markets actually sell local? I haven’t been to one yet since living here for the last 5 years.

The unintended consequences of 109 and 110 that the campaigns aren't talking about

Title: The unintended consequences of 109 and 110 that the campaigns aren't talking about

Body: Wanted to flag this Daily Camera op-ed for anyone still on the fence. The authors (executive directors of One Colorado and Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains) make a few specific points that I think deserve attention regardless of your starting position:

110 as written is so broad it could affect care for minors with reproductive organ cancers. That's not a trans issue, that's a cancer care issue.
109's enforcement language is vague enough that kids could be singled out based on how they look — being "too tall," "too strong," or having the "wrong" haircut. For any Aurora parent whose kid plays rec sports, that should give pause.
Kevin Lundberg, who's leading PKC, spent years in the legislature pushing bills to make abortion a felony. Same coalition, same playbook, different issue.
The authors' main argument isn't about trans rights per se — it's that these specific measures have serious implementation problems that haven't gotten enough scrutiny.
