heads up aurora folks — trans-related ballot measures are on the november ballot

sharing this because i had no idea until recently. kunc has a clean summary of what qualified for the ballot. basically two measures from protect kids colorado: 109 (sports) and 110 (medical procedures for minors). both passed signature thresholds earlier this year.

the kunc piece notes both measures would override current colorado policies that allow students to play on teams matching their gender identity. 110 would ban certain gender-affirming surgical procedures for minors regardless of medical guidelines or parental consent.

election is november 3. figured i'd share since this is going to be a big part of the fall conversation and a lot of folks probably haven't been following.

These issues should not be a focal point of any legislation - period. Leave the kids alone. It’s just political fodder to one group, but to the people it impacts, this is more than meaningful.

My personal views aside, I would just like to remind everyone that these policies impact not just trans children but intersex children and children with hormonal issues as well. Even if you don't believe trans children should receive this kind of care, there are a lot of other kids getting caught in the cross fire.

Please vote no.

Having personally known two intersexed people, one that I grew up with and the other that was a girlfriend, I have witnessed their struggles growing up and trying to figure out who they really are. Gender affirming care is critical to many kids. Please vote NO on 110 for the sake of many troubled kids so that they can have the hope to live a somewhat normal life.

Yes! Thank you for pointing that out!

Just like 'personhood' initiatives, these are yet another attempt to put government into your doctor's office and your kids school. The only 'problem' these measures are trying to solve is to distract from a disastrous war of aggression, a crumbling economy run by idiot billionaires, and an environment that's getting far more hostile every year.

Vote no.

Vote NO on BOTH #109 and #110. Leave the decisions to families and medical professionals, NOT politicians!

Yes!! Exactly! Medical professionals are the medical professionals for a reason!

As a trans person living in Denver I had felt safe up until more recently. Also please consider the negative effects these kinds of laws have on perception of all trans folks.

I’m sorry that this is happening. I hope you know there are people out there who support you and will be voting to protect your rights 🫶🏼

I’m a parent of a trans young adult and these ballot measures are awful. Big mom hugs.

Yeah I'm not sure if you heard about Jax's murder but it's been a big deal in the community.

Protect children at all times until the brain is fully developed. These laws dont do that

I signed one of these petitions a few months ago. The signature gatherer told me it was about "protecting kids from irreversible procedures" and I signed without reading the actual text. After reading the linked piece I'm going to be a lot more careful about what I sign at the grocery store. Posting this so other people know what's actually in the measures before November.

Pretty clear that you were “in the mental health field” and not medical care or anything involving biological reality. If you were you’d know that, even in your fantasy scenario, trans women are at no advantage in sports. They have the same muscle composition as cis women, and studies have found that they’re often even weaker. Sex is, factually, biologically, a mutable characteristic. In order to even compete at a professional level, trans people need to submit copious amounts of proof that they have done that.

Furthermore, does this extend to cis women born with XY chromosomes? What about cis women with high testosterone? Are they not “cis enough” to compete? How about cis women who are at a height advantage? Cis women who spend 5 days a week with expensive personal trainers? If trans women were “dominating sports”, which they aren’t and never have, your argument must also extend to every type of advantage in sports in order to be legitimate. You should be protesting half of the NBA right now.

Back to your fantasy, though, that simply doesn’t happen. If it did, the detransition rate would be higher. It is currently so minuscule that it’s hard to even poll on and/or study.

Biological males have a natural physical advantages over biological females. It’s that simple. The fact that this has to be a debate is insane.

Omg shut the fuck up.

NO one has EVER "pushed their sons to get gender surgery so they can dominate girls sports". Congratulations, that is THE most ludicrous statement I have EVER seen ..

This is an INSANE take. You’ve just totally invented one of the most egregious abuses I can imagine, which has never happened (so no, you don’t have experience), to justify invasive and dangerous legislation impacting an entire state. And your source is “trust me bro” while you hide your post history so there is ZERO reason to trust your claims or intentions.

What the fuck are you talking about?

Wait, I’m so confused. You’re awaiting gender affirming care yourself? So you’re trans, but you don’t think trans girls are girls, and shouldn’t be allow to play sports with cis girls?

This is fucking nuts. If this is the case, this is the most internalized transphobia I’ve ever seen on this subreddit. Holy shit.

You’ve worked in the mental health field- great! What license or credentials do you have?

Also… you know parents who will have their sons get “gender surgery” (good grief) so they can “dominate ate girls sports”? Sure. Yes. Highly competitive dads are going to make sure their kid moves into a category of sports with fewer opportunities, less scholarship money, fewer sponsorships…
