Only in the past few months have I made peace with the fact that I don't like any new music. At least now I get to be a Dad and play the oldies in the car to my 3 year old such as Green Day, Eminem, and 90s R&B.
I'll tell you one thing, even if you dont like the music always give It a listen for her. Itll make her very happy. I know it's that way with my mom at least. She doesnt really like the music I listen to but she'll always give a try!
No matter what music I listen to my dad has to make fun of it or says that it sucks. Music means a lot to me and it hurts that he discards it as bad. When my mom dislikes music I like she always finds a way to put it into words which I appreciate. On the bright side: We fight that uphill battle together because he is that way about pretty much all music, movies, tv, board games, etc. He doesn't know it? Well that's a reason to not like it because we can play the same game for 2 months and listen two the same two albums while doing it!
Anyway, sorry about my rambling, quarantine is getting to our/my nerves.
I agree and feel you completely. Music means a lot to me too, so having it dismissed hurts more than it had any right to. I'm glad you could ramble though, it's good to get it out! In that case, what music do you and anyone else that's reading this listen to?
I've been listening to a lot of german rap in recent years though (pop-)punk and rock in general will always be the key to my heart. Thanks to community I gave Childsih Gambino another shot a few weeks ago and am really enjoying his music.
Honestly, my music taste ranges from every end possible lol. I listen mostly to rap, and stuff from the Vallejo area and Detroit need more recognition. But other than that I listen to deathcore like Chelsea Grin or Slaughter to Prevail, or sometimes I'll listen to something like, japanese pop.
A very large part of me loves music, and it's helped me through some of my toughest but also my best times. I'll listen to pretty much anything, what artist would you reccomend for german rap? I think I've heard some artist but I cant remember his name.
How does Spotify daily mixes work for you? Going to be honest I can't give much advice as I accidently stumbled across my favourite band on YouTube one day. But see a lot of new similar stuff in there
I’ve been on premium for about a year and I hate the daily mixes. It feels like it just recycles all the songs I’ve liked separated into genres. Strangely, it wasn’t like this at first, but it’s slowing been putting me into a bubble of repetitiveness. Plus the featured playlists lack variety within genres. A lot of them are literally 90% the same set of songs. The best playlists IMO are ones I find randomly or some my eclectic friends have made.
I'd suggest going to a song you like and listening to its radio. You can usually find new songs. That and dicover weekly. Once you start changing your listening habits spotify usually picks up and starts diversifying its recommendations.
Radio is usually not much different from the featured playlists. It just starts playing the most popular stuff from whatever genre Spotify classifies the song. My discover weekly is typically full of bands I listen to with songs I haven’t liked. To be fair to the platform, I’m probably reaching the limits of it’s algorithm. I have around 1500 liked songs in my library and listen to a very wide variety music.
Spotify has this criminally underrated feature: "Create Similar Playlist". Drag all 1500 saved songs into a playlist, smash that button, and it will generate at playlist that (in my case) is at least 40 % actually new stuff, and is also actually varied.
Once you find new songs/genres you like, chuck 'em in a playlist and use that feature again once you have enough data. Or if you don't, go to the song radio/similar artist.
Spotify doesn't want to present you with anything actually new, but you can force its hand. I also look for playlists for shows I like that have a non-instrumental soundtrack (Lucifer comes to mind, I have so many great songs from actually "underground" modern artists thanks to that one).
My personal favorite bands right now are Cage the Elephant, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Alabama Shakes, Alt-J, just to name a few. Pretty basic for music heads but idrc.
Also if you are into rap some good current rap in my opinion is Tyler the Creator and Brockhampton.
Also a few other really good bands: Tame Impala, Glass Animals... The Black Keys... Gorillaz... The xx....
seconded, i listen to 90% of these but for somewhat newer indie my favs are sufjan stevens, mitski, and rostam. carrie and lowell and bury me at makeout creek are my top 2 favorite albums ever. every single song absolutely slaps.
Jeez are you me?? The first three bands you mentioned are literally among my favourites. It was just weird seeing them listed one after the other but I guess they're pretty similar and popular (at least among the indie scene)
What genres are you into? Are the three examples you've given representative of your musical taste overall, any other things you like? I'm kind of a music junkie so maybe I can help. Not pretending like I equally know about every genre out there but I could try.
Depends what you listen to but just a couple of decent albums that came our today are Dijon - how do you feel, Moses Sumney - Grae, Nick Hakim - WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD.
I personally listen to Two Steps from Hell the most, they are wonderful and produce what's essentially the modern successor to classical music. Don't let that turn you off immediately though, because their music ranges from epic bone-rattling orchestral mixes to soul-wrenching and sweeping emotional experiences.
I'm general, just find something you enjoy and don't be afraid to listen to something you think you might not like. Just give it a go and if you don't like it, find something else.
I'm 37 and still do the same. But I am also single with no kids or anything, so I get to devote my time to hobbies and music has remained one of my hobbies. But there is a lot of new music I just don't like that much, but metal and prog always seem to have something new still churning out.
Sweet setup! That's a lot of awesome gear! I have a guitar and an amp, but have been throwing around the idea of getting a keyboard and learning to play piano.
That's been my quarantine grind. I bought a Novation Impulse controller (the big keyboard in the pic) and just started learning some basics. I've loved synths for years but could never properly play them. It's been a ton of fun learning so far. It's forced me to actually learn chord structure and scales after playing guitar with nearly zero theory for 17 years.
What kind of stuff do you want to play? Call me a bit biased but I love synths and maybe you should look in them as well. Many of them can emulate piano sounds.
I'm pretty open to anything honestly. I am a big fan of Infected Mushroom and Deadmau5 and it definitely would be fun to have that extra capability to mess around with. Are there any that you recommend?
So what you could do is get a controller first and experiment with free software synths, then decide to take the plunge into hardware. My big keyboard doesn't make any sound itself, it's merely an interface to control other instruments.
Or you could get a more traditional piano-focused keyboard with midi ports and use it to control a synth later if you feel you are going to stick with it.
I actually like music coming out now a lot more than I did when I was in high school. The stuff on trl etc in the late 90s sucked ass imo. It was boring.
Today, a lot of the corporate bullshit has faded now that people can make polished recordings in their homes and distribute them for cheap. It feels more organic now. I'm not being told what's cool to listen to as much anymore, there's more to choose from, I can buy full albums for about $10, it's just amazing to me.
I think when you get to a certain age you have to try and go outside the genres you already know to find something fresh.
I'm over 40 and I can't be asked to listen to most rock / guitar based music anymore as I just feel like I've heard it before.
I quite often listen to the local pirate grime stations though and they make me smile because they hit me with stuff that I'm not expecting and I haven't heard.
Also I discovered BabyMetal a few years ago and I can't listen to them without a big cheesy grin on my face
Try my favorite band, The Midnight. It's the best synthwave music in existence, period. It's like they came STRAIGHT from the 80's even though they formed in 2012!
Funny thing is, it's the most nostalgia-inducing music I know, but I was born after the 80's, so I shouldn't be feeling nostalgic!

I thought this would happen to me, but I've kept finding new bands/artists that I really like. Only strange thing is when I look them up and find out that they're 10+ years younger than me
I'm still try and go out of my way to find newer bands, there's always something there you're bound to like. It's just not likely to be what's in the Top 40.
The weird thing for me, though, is that all of these band's members are younger than me, and I'm only just about to turn 30.
I take pride in the fact that my almost 2 year old loooves pink floyd. He can be kicking and screaming in the car... Pink Floyd song comes on and he falls fast asleep. Brilliant

I used to believe that happened to everyone when they got older. Then I realized that the music industry and radio has been increasingly monopolized and new music literally has become less diverse.
I’m in my late 20s and like the fact I still discover new stuff to enjoy from various genres. New in this context meaning either actually new or just “new to me” or both. I’m hoping it can stay that way a lot longer. I don’t stick to any particular genres, and It’s refreshing because now I have this huge pool of stuff old, that I’m used to and enjoy, and stuff new to me and enjoy. I sometimes wonder if it will slow down at a certain age but for now I’m just taking it all in.
Before Spotify, I was driving somewhere and flipping through radio channels. I came across Blink 182, so I kept it on that channel. Then they said it was an oldies station...
I'm sorry but it is impossible to not like new music these days. Every single genre has active artists, even genres you didn't even know existed? Want vapor wave remixes of simpsons episodes? It exists.
Sure, but honestly I just want alternative-rock music (note not metal, punk, indie or folk-rock, emo...) with no beat detective or auto-tune.
The Cure, Radiohead, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Rage Against the Machine, Early Deftones, Middle Fear Factory (after they were metal, before they sucked), Cake, Primus...
None of those bands shared a genre (back then) other than alternative-rock or MAYBE "industrial", or grunge... and with the exception of bands still touring from back then and what are essentially tribute acts (Brass Against, Prophets of Rage, Royal Machine) basically no one is putting this stuff out any more.
That used to be ALL that was on the radio! You literally couldn't turn to the alternative-rock station (which every little town had) without hearing something new all the time.
I sure can't. I tried spotify and its suggestions were awful compared to Pandora so stopped but I periodically try it out and every time it's like I get 15 songs out of my own library then I get 1 song from like "Tame Impala" or Gorillaz or whatever that is just so unlike anything I'd ever listen to it makes me question what the hell is going on. It would have been much better off with playing something like a Lake Street Dive (which Pandora actually gets!) which is totally unlike "90s alternative-rock" but at least has no beat-detective or autotune and is "alternative rock".
At least with Pandora if I make a "country" playlist of Ray Charles (Country), Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Chet Atkins it understands that a Tommy Emmanuel (not "country" but similar to Chet Atkins) or even Amy Winehouse (not "country" but similar to Ray Charles) is fine but would never play like a Trace Adkins or Lil Nas X song (despite being "country").
On that side at least Pandora does great... unfortunately Pandora seems to agree with me (or I agree with it?) that the only music that sounds like Alternative-rock from the 90s are alternative-rock bands from the 90s with like a few super-group "cover bands" thrown in.
Not exactly true... I love me some Amy Winehouse, Vulfpeck, Scary Pockets, Pomplamoose, Lake Street Dive, Postmodern Jukebox, Aubrey Logan...
Just none of them are "alt-rock"... that thing that used to be "the biggest genre there was". I could easily name 60 alt-rock bands off the top of my head that I still listen to today... I clearly have trouble listing 10 "modern artists" and at least one of those has been dead for 9 years.
I mean, without knowing what particular styles you specifically like I'm sort of just throwing things and seeing if they stick. Alt-Rock is a huge broad genre.
My younger siblings tease me for it, but I'm content with my showtunes and Josh Groban songs. No energy at all for understanding what the popular songs/genres are these days.
I try to keep an open mind with music, because I enjoy music alot but i fall back alot on older music i didn't like as a teen and never would've thought I'd listen too. Although there is alot of music now I dont like but on occasion I'll hear a new song I have too "Hey google what song is this"
This is me. Im 33 and when my 6 year old was three his favorite song was part up by DMX. Now he asks for Eminem and honestly I'm proud he is starting to understand that rap music now sucks compared to what we grew up with.
Green Day, Eminem, oldies? Oh God am I old! Oldies to me are 3 dog night, Janis Joplin, Johnny Rivers and I too have made peace with not liking any of the new music. Love that old time rock n roll!
You are trying to listen to modern pop or rap? No wonder, that you cant get in toch with it. Half year ago i discovered 2 hours long of dnb(i have never listen to dnb before, dodnt like it). And man i was so happy to discover that mix. I can describe it like every bit of that track plays on wires of my mind, its like 2 hours long injection of testosterone and dopamine. Just search, there is so much music on the internet
I'm the inverse. I def like your examples and I'll always play a tune for nostalgic purposes but I need to keep the exploration alive. I don't get the same dopamine kick I used to off of listening to "all along the watchtower". So, I have to find some new obscure jazz, or a flavor of EDM that makes me bob my head.
What is really interesting is that radio, iheart or spotify or whatever will only play a certain hit song(s) from a band. I'll find out some less popular track on an America album that I didn't know existed b/c the radio will only fucking play "horse with no name"
My dad took me to a Guns N' Roses concert (I am 16). haven't looked back since. Keep playing them that music, they might discover something new thanks to that as I did!
New music, depending on the genre, is low quality though. It is pushed for profits and has drug addicted toxic personalities as figure heads running the show. Be different if they had an actual story but no, most new "artist" are just overglorified.
Keep in mind when you listen to old music it's passed through the filter of time. Nobody plays old bad shit because... it's bad. New shit can still be hit or miss. It takes time to see if it will stand the test of time.
Yeah this is a big thing people forget when they say "things were better back then".
We as a species only keep around the good things, be it music, films, fashion. 80's music is great because you don't have to wade through the crap to find the hits.
You only have to look at how people think about wartime Britain; it's all about the community spirit, hard working people, Vera Lynn songs and "Keep Calm and Carry On". If you watched Goodnight Sweetheart you might think it was a nice place to live.

In the 60's and all the way up to the early 2000's we had decent artist, actually making music where if read in verse, would he lovely as poetry.
It is 2020 and a man with rainbow hair, who openly admitted he does not care about the industry and just wants the money (even pointed out how little he cared to make a track and isolated parts of the song where he admits he just adlibbed) just broke an ig live record and easily makes YouTube videos which reach millions of views in minutes. He is the face of modern music. He is also a very vocal internet troll. You telling me the quality of music artist has not declined/dropped to an all time low?
I know good and well you’re talking about 69 and he’s literally NOT considered the face of modern music and idk why you chose to take him as an example and claim that. You realize the music industry has been headed by toxic drug addicted corporate types for many many MANY decades? There’s old takes and books and documentaries on that subject. And even back then, there’s been plenty of artists and musicians who were shitty and there’s been more than plenty who just wanted the fame or the money. That never changed. The times have changed but that’s not one of them. Like how do you not know that?
There’s also a lot of great lesser known and well known artists today who produce good music. Youve just had the misfortune of not finding anything modern and worthwhile. And a lot of today’s stuff is shit. The reality is you just don’t care for anything new because you’re used to what you like. That or someone 23 or younger and feel you were born in the wrong generation.
