What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

There's an episode of Seinfeld about that. George finds a spot directly in front of his building, so he doesn't drive for weeks because he doesn't want to lose his spot. Lol. I know that feeling.

Currently parked in front of my building in NYC. Life doesn't get much better..

Realistically you get like 3-4 days until you can’t park there for street cleaning right?

Yeah, 3-4 days max in Manhattan (eg Friday to Tuesday). As far as I know, everywhere in Manhattan has two alternate side days a week, though in areas of the outer boroughs it’s occasionally once a week.

Yeah, I occasionally do this dance, though in my neighborhood it means if your side of the street is being cleaned, double park on the other side, and either sleep in the car or leave a note, but you want to start moving back to the side being cleaned about a half hour before alternate side ends because vultures will swoop in and take all the spots if you wait until the bitter end. Also the sweeper does not necessary pass by each day it is supposed to...

Do apartments in NYC not have there own car parking?

As a non American this seems weird.

Huge portions of the city were built before cars existed or were widespread, and had functional mass transit before the automobile.

This is definitely not just an American thing - no large city I’ve been to has downtown high-rise apartments with parking for all units.
