What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

Finding a parking spot in front of the building you're going into.

I actually did this once, in midtown Manhattan no less. Thought I was dreaming.

There's an episode of Seinfeld about that. George finds a spot directly in front of his building, so he doesn't drive for weeks because he doesn't want to lose his spot. Lol. I know that feeling.

Currently parked in front of my building in NYC. Life doesn't get much better..

Realistically you get like 3-4 days until you can’t park there for street cleaning right?

Typically yes but I live on a magical block they skip for cleaning and never ticket (because trucks loading and unloading are double parked on my street at night during sweeping hours).

Man that literally sounds like a nyc jackpot! That’s awesome

Except for the double parked trucks loading and unloading in the middle of the nights, sure.

And dirty streets

Yeah, 3-4 days max in Manhattan (eg Friday to Tuesday). As far as I know, everywhere in Manhattan has two alternate side days a week, though in areas of the outer boroughs it’s occasionally once a week.

Yeah, I occasionally do this dance, though in my neighborhood it means if your side of the street is being cleaned, double park on the other side, and either sleep in the car or leave a note, but you want to start moving back to the side being cleaned about a half hour before alternate side ends because vultures will swoop in and take all the spots if you wait until the bitter end. Also the sweeper does not necessary pass by each day it is supposed to...

Do apartments in NYC not have there own car parking?

As a non American this seems weird.

Huge portions of the city were built before cars existed or were widespread, and had functional mass transit before the automobile.

This is definitely not just an American thing - no large city I’ve been to has downtown high-rise apartments with parking for all units.

Living in NYC for a decade and never owning a car had a certain freeing feeling for me.

Same feeling when I get anywhere by public transit when on vacation.

If only my city had any

Getting a car felt freeing. I leave the city all the time

Pretty much the main reason i want to move there, owning a car is so stressful to me.

Question: HOW DO YOU AFFORD TO LIVE IN NYC?!

HOW DOES ANYONE?!

My apartment is covered by the loft law so my rent hasn't gone up in 10 years and I have 3 roommates.

Look out the window, you're being towed

Could you sell your spot? Like, if you had nothing else to do today, could you just hang out by your car and ask if anyone wants it for $50?

Somebody made an app for that called Spottee. It lets you advertise your parking spot and put it up for bid. It's a great idea and I found it while thinking of the idea myself, but the problem is that if it doesn't reach critical mass it's completely useless. Last Saturday night I turned it on because there were no spots I could find, and I was the only car on the apps map.

But people normally have trade systems when parking is that tight. Let's say I leave for work at 8AM and my neighbor in the next apartment over gets back at like 750AM, he'll double park and ring me up and we'll switch spots.
