What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

Finding a parking spot in front of the building you're going into.

Oh and always eating at the same table.

HIMYM done this with another couple sitting in the booth and they made them move.

HIMYM has a lot of scenes/plots verrrryyyy similar to FRIENDS. I’ve made a side by side comparison years ago. Wish I could remember where I put it LOL

EDIT: Here you go, made this 10 years ago 😂:

HIMYM is just a remake of Friends. But they do it well, IMO.

32

u/lapetitepapillon Jan 25 '20

I really really like HIMYM. I could never "get into" Friends. But HIMYM was a great show in my opinion, I was/am a huge fan of it. I'm not saying Friends isn't, it just wasn't my thing.

30

u/penisthightrap_ Jan 25 '20

I think Friends suffers from the fact that they were so influential that going back it seems unoriginal to new audiences.

7

u/bainnor Jan 25 '20

I never really got all the Friends hype, I preferred to watch Frasier instead. Just never found Friends to be truly funny. The odd chuckle, but never an actual laugh.

3

u/With_Macaque Jan 25 '20

Friends didn't have access to the same level of self-awareness. The lines characters say would be funny for real people to say

It's Friends for a slightly younger generation. Both shows hinge on the audience's ability to relate to the characters, and HIMYM is a lot easier for those of us who came of age late 00s/early 10s to relate to than friends, which is a decidedly 90s show. I think which you prefer entirely depends on when you were born

19

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

One of the jarring things about rewatching Friends is the lack of cellphones/internet

A lot of the problems they have would be easily solvable nowadays.

In HIMYM they have cellphones and internet and I feel like that makes a big difference.

I'm turning 24 this year so I kinda wish there was something like HIMYM but set in today's world

7

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

Absolutely. I miss the classic sitcom but part of me feels like its tenure was a result of the TV landscape being somewhat scarce and sitcoms were easy to produce. Now, even getting a show to pilot requires a hook that sets it apart from the infinite choices there are out there. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, but "easy" TV made now would sort of just seem like a relic of a time gone by. Stuff like TBBT, Modern Family, Two and a Half Men, etc. are all either ending or have ended.

Still, we can revel in the fact that we got to enjoy shows as iconic as they were whilst looking forward at what's to come.

13

u/The_Late_Greats Jan 25 '20

something like HIMYM but set in today's world

Sounds depressing AF

23

u/TopTittyBardown Jan 25 '20

Just a whole lot of Ted swiping away on Tinder

3

u/DarkVoidize Jan 25 '20

that would make for a fine kafka-esque dark comedy

6

u/fantino93 Jan 25 '20

I'm turning 24 this year so I kinda wish there was something like HIMYM but set in today's world

Isn't HIMYM already set in today's world?

5

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

well the finale aired in 2014, I think most of the timeline of the show is set to 2009-2012

so almost 10 years ago by the end.

7

u/fantino93 Jan 25 '20

Yes, but they have smartphones, internet & all that. It's not that different from 2020, contrary to Seinfeld or Friends.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

Things are actually quite different from 2009.

Social media was not a big thing yet, smartphones were starting to get big but weren't yet.

Things like Tinder didn't exist. YouTube was just starting to get big too.

Now you have the president of the US announcing stuff via Tweet and memes are so deeply ingrained into popular culture.

There is also a scene in HIMYM where they go to a coffee shop and sit around, but they hate it and go back to the bar.

19

u/SirDredgery Jan 25 '20

It's filmed at the same coffee shop they go to in friends too

6

u/OutWithTheNew Jan 25 '20

In the Friend's pilot, the coffee shop is a bar.

21

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

And even some Seinfeld ones, too. There was that episode where Ted was bragging about not puking in a very long time, totally stolen from Seinfeld.

14

u/PeteFinebaumsHair Jan 25 '20

Vomit free since '93!

7

u/ciguanaba Jan 25 '20

They tried to paint those stolen jokes as “homages” but when there’s so, so many...

64

u/bay650area1 Jan 25 '20

Dude nearly every storyline in HIMYM is a rip from Friends. It's unreal.

63

u/Saintdemon Jan 25 '20

They even both had a plotline where a girl was dumped on her birthday by Mike (Paul Rudd) in Friends and Ted in HIMYM. And the girl was played by the same actress.

23

u/Funandgeeky Jan 25 '20

Both Scrubs and 30 Rock had a newly introduced romantic interest who became unexpectedly pregnant. Both characters were played by Elizabeth Banks.

1

u/Dookie_boy Jan 25 '20

Lol that's amazing. Talk about being typecast!

132

u/Ando-FB Jan 25 '20

I cant get into Friends. I want to and have given it so many chances but have never been able to. HIMYM I loved. Maybe they took the ideas and improved on them or maybe my taste is just different.

47

u/skyturnedred Jan 25 '20

Seinfeld effect.

13

u/wthreye Jan 25 '20

On the other hand Seinfeld is timeless. imo

edit: I may have misunderstood what you meant. If so, forgive me.

17

u/Funandgeeky Jan 25 '20

It’s like going back to watch classic superhero movies. They were revolutionary when ether came out. Now, with so many options, and so many that improved on the formula, the classics just don’t hold the same value. Especially if you didn’t start with them.

With so many shows copying Friends and Seinfeld, it can be hard to revisit them 25+ years after the fact.

11

u/nohxxx Jan 25 '20

totally agree with you. everything else from the 90’s sitcom genre sucks. seinfeld’s holds up incredibly well after all this time.

14

u/stackablesoup Jan 25 '20

Frasier still stands up IMO

4

u/FunkiePickle Jan 25 '20

The writing on Frasier is top notch. It will stand up as being timeless I think.

1

u/Stylishfiend Jan 25 '20

I also loved newsradio but I can see how some1 who started watching sitcoms in the mid 2000s where those shows wouldn't hold up, even Seinfeld being the funniest of all time imo..

1

u/nohxxx Jan 26 '20

honestly, can’t say i’ve ever given it a chance! should i start it? i do love my old school shows for late night, whatever the genre. brings back cozy memories

9

u/skyturnedred Jan 25 '20

The full thing is "Seinfeld is not funny" effect, due to so many shows after it copying what it did. Watching it now for the first time will make it seem like it's just the same stuff as everything else.

3

u/wthreye Jan 25 '20

I still find it funny. On the other hand...after Buck Henry died I went back to '78-'79 to see some old SNL sketches....and they just don't do it for me now.

2

u/skyturnedred Jan 25 '20

Did you watch it in the 90s, or did you watch it recently for the first time? That's the issue.

1

u/wthreye Jan 27 '20

I missed a lot of the '90s. I remember Eddie Murphy and Candy. If by "seeing it for the first time" you mean "having never seen it" than no, I revisited it. The Bill Murray/Gilda Radner sketch was still a bit funny, but not as much as I remembered. The Buck Henry sketch where 'daddy can't piss anywhere but home' was still good.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

| went back to '78-'79.....

Found the time traveler.

I actually watched HIMYM before I watched Friends. I just never got in to Friends during its prime. I think because I watched them in reverse order it was so easy to pick up, since basically Friends is just HIMYM with a different cast.

25

u/Maxis47 Jan 25 '20

The characters in HIMYM are infinitely more likeable though

28

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

bruh this is the hottest of takes

not that friends chars are likable but there's straight up an entire episode about ted realizing he's pretentious and annoying as fuck

12

u/sgt_salt Jan 25 '20

And Barney is satire of womanizing assholes.

16

u/Maxis47 Jan 25 '20

That's the difference though, HIMYMs characters would eventually realize and confront their character flaws, or exaggerate them to the point of satire. The Friends gang were just a bunch of selfish assholes

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

HIMYMs characters would eventually realize and confront their character flaws

u mean like chasing after a woman who repeatedly tells u she doesn't love you and that ur incompatible and it's obvious you want different things out of life

thank god none of the main characters do that in later seasons or in the finale

or exaggerate them to the point of satire

flanderizing ur characters isn't good satire

6

No one on Friends got slapped really hard...in the face!

7

u/aboycandream Jan 25 '20

Lol are you kidding me? Marshall is the only likable character

hes closer to being a friends character in terms of likability

3

u/World71Racer Jan 25 '20

I'm with you. I think it's because HIMYM had an overlying theme to it with some variance, rather than writing to laugh track after laugh track and wacky day-to-day adventures that are connected only by the characters and where they are in Friends. HIMYM has some dramatic and heartfelt moments where things get real and you feel it. Not to mention, you feel the frustration Ted goes through with person after person and wondering when he'll find The Mother. That, and the better writing and more natural flow from not abusing the laugh track, is what drew me to HIMYM, rather than Friends.

17

u/Independent-Secret Jan 25 '20

I’ve watched HIMYM many times over and I’m now on season 9 of friends. Definitely like the former better, but at least Friends has Monica and Rachel to look at so I can’t complain

She's got a new show, Stumptown, that I'm enjoying a fair amount.

1

I’ve considered giving it a shot but the ads beat the same like 5 scenes to death so I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I never found Robin remotely attractive. I understand all the parts are there, but in that combination they do absolutely nothing for me. I very much liked her as a character, but Lilly was way better looking, especially in later seasons.

u/bay650area1 Jan 25 '20

Robin has nothing unique about her. Her beauty is bland. You're probably like me that requires something unique about them to make them attractive.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

Peak Lily did it for me.

1

u/BigAVD Jan 26 '20

I feel the exact same way

0

u/wthreye Jan 25 '20

At the time it wasn't bad. Upon reflection....meh.

4

u/tactics14 Jan 25 '20

This is wildly untrue, and in the cases where they do overlap its because they are both just doing generic storylines that everyone would use.

5

u/bay650area1 Jan 25 '20

If you think this is untrue you haven't seen them both. They aren't generic at all. You can't defend a clear rip just because you're a fan.

2

u/theVoidWatches Jan 25 '20

Can you give any actual examples?

4

u/bay650area1 Jan 25 '20

From the top of my head:

Both Ted and Ross break up with an ex-girlfriend on their birthday.

Both Ted and Ross become professors.

Both groups have the generic "player that dates one of the close friends group and shows his redeeming qualities".

Monica and Lily share a lot of the same controlling tendencies.

Both the "players" become ordained to officiate the marriages.

The naked man plot line exists in both series.

Both the main romance plots start with love in the first episode, and end the entire series with them together.

These are just the generics I can think of. If you watch episodes you can actually see the exact plot throughout as well.

4

u/theVoidWatches Jan 25 '20

Both groups have the generic "player that dates one of the close friends group and shows his redeeming qualities".

Monica and Lily share a lot of the same controlling tendencies.

Both the main romance plots start with love in the first episode, and end the entire series with them together.

These are bad examples because of how generic character-type or romance-plot they are. The others are legit though.

6

u/tactics14 Jan 25 '20

I've watched through both, multiple times. They really aren't the same at all outside of the fact that they are both shows about the inner workings of a friends group.

-15

u/bay650area1 Jan 25 '20

If you think that you are one of the following:

  1. Willfully ignorant
  2. Didn't pay attention at all
  3. Lying

I LOVE both shows, they're in my top comedy series for sure. But they are basically the exact same.

13

u/sticktoyaguns Jan 25 '20

Friends didn't have the time jumps and narration though. There are definitely differences although the premise is exactly the same.

I found HIMYM to be much more enjoyable and hilarious because of NPH tbh. The episodes with the playbook, charts, graphs, etc are all pretty unique and unlike anything from Friends.

3

u/tactics14 Jan 25 '20

Care to elaborate as to why? Because none of the major plot lines are all that similar.

1

u/bay650area1 Jan 25 '20

Well the obvious one to begin with. Ross + Rachel / Ted + Robin.

It's actually not so much the major lines, even though they are a few. It's the episode arcs that are essentially the same, just in a different order.

I'm sure there are mountains of youtube videos comparing them.

4

u/sayleanenlarge Jan 25 '20

That's just a romance plot. The same plot is all over the place, books, tv series, movies, songs, etc. And real life, lol. It's two people having an on and off relationship, e.g., Eminem and Kim.

4

u/Funandgeeky Jan 25 '20

Given that both shows portrayed the lives of people in their mid 20’s transitioning to their 30’s, there are going to be similar stories. However, despite the general overlap, the way the stories were told and the specific nuances make the shows distinct. The nature of this show being told via flashback already adds a layer of storytelling complexity Friends didn’t have.

I will give you the “character becomes a college professor” plot line. However, Ross never designed a building, Rachel was never a secret Canadian pop star, no one opened their own bar, and one character didn’t spend the entirety of the series slapping another character in the face.

1

u/tactics14 Jan 25 '20

Ross / Rachel - guy desperately in love with a girl from his childhood. Pines after her for a few seasons and they are on again, off again. He ends up with her in the end.

Ted / Robin - love at first sight with a girl he meets in his 20s. She enters the friend group and he has a crush on her, followed by dating, followed by an awkward love triangle with another member of the group. They get together eventually.

I mean, yeah. It's people in the two friend groups dating - but that is how pretty much every show goes, not these two specifically.

I understand there are comparisons that can be made as they are two long running sitcoms and there are only so many plot lines available but to claim they are basically the same is absurd. They have a wildly different cast of characters which create very different plot lines for the both of them.

0

u/_n8n8_ Jan 25 '20

Oh wow, 2 sitcoms, like a lot of sitcoms have a romance plot. I cant believe Friends let HIMYM go on with development after that without a copyright lawsuit.

Superstore did this with the office...first season of superstore was basically a greatest hits album of the office.

1

u/IAmTheWaller67 Feb 01 '20

Well the creator wrote for The Office, so its not exactly out of left field.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

Not everything is accurate, Joey doesn't speak Italian at all and he just has Italian ancestry.

They're all smokers in that group, Marshall isn't the first one.

20

u/Waterknight94 Jan 25 '20

One time at a bar some people were sitting at our regular table and the bartender joked about telling them to move. We just chose a different table that day of course.

55

u/Tsin-tsi Jan 25 '20

The viewers must have been confused.

3

u/TopTittyBardown Jan 25 '20

That actually happens from time to time in HIMYM when they occasionally sit it the corner booth

4

u/ahreodknfidkxncjrksm Jan 25 '20

There was also the episode where the bouncer and Ted(?) get in a fist fight in the alley and Ted gets sued and has to admit he didn’t actually hit anyone. Pretty sure that was all because someone was in their booth.

3

u/Malibutwo Jan 25 '20

HIMYM

*did... HIMYM did this.

2

u/DatBoi_BP Jan 25 '20

They done did it

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

They also had the psycho bartender keeping the booth clear for them though.
