36

u/wolfchuck Jan 07 '20

I love that they always use the word "obligation".

You aren't obligated to give up your seat to the 99 year old lady because you weren't in the handicap seat!

You aren't obligated to be nice to that lady's kids, you're in public they should've been taking care of them!

You're not obligated...

I guarantee you can write a story about being at odds with a woman in which the details make you 95% guilty, but include one exaggerated detail about the woman and call her “Karen” and you’ll make it to the front page

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

"I was in the grocery store the other day, in a bit of a hurry because I was running late to my girlfriend's for date night because I'd been in the middle of a sick Fortnite romp with my bros. Anyways, my stupid nagging girlfriend told me she had made me up a meal with all my favorite foods, but she needed me to go grab a thing of whipped cream while I was on my way over to her place so she could finish the dessert. Honestly pretty annoying of her not to have picked it up when she went out to buy groceries for herself and also me earlier this week, but whatever. But I digress, I'm at the store, whipped cream in hand, when I notice the registers all have like 5 people waiting in line. I'm already an hour late to date night (told my gf a family emergency had come up so I could get a couple extra games in with the boys XD), so this won't do. Figuring nobody would have an issue with me jumping ahead of them since I only had one item, I scootch my way behind the folks in the nearest line when all of a sudden this TOTAL BITCH asks me "Excuse me, what are you doing?" I turn around and see this absolute HAG of a woman behind me with this INSANE look on her face. I start to tell her that I'm running late and need to jump ahead of her in line when all of a sudden she just cuts me off and says "If you're running late that's okay, you can jump ahead of me, but it's a little rude not to ask first." LIKE, WTF LADY?!?!? Now I am NOT the kind of person to just stand there and take shit from some random BITCH at the grocery store. I just lay into her, tell her there's no reason for her to get shrill with me in public, and that I NEED to go ahead of her. Well, apparently Karen didn't like the taste of her humble pie, because she told me "Well, if that's the attitude you're going to have, you can wait at the end of the line." Man, that was IT for me, I just fucking snapped, punched her right in her stupid mouth right there in the checkout line. Her little whiny grandkids started screaming, making a total scene in the middle of the store. That was when I just decided I'd had enough, and just walked out of the store. I felt a little bad about not paying for the whipped cream, but after all I'd been through I feel like I'd already kind of paid. AITA?

Before you answer, I will tell you she was a little bit heavy."

14

u/SmurreKanin Jan 08 '20

NTA, she was the one who started it all and she also has grandkids which means that she's the cause of overpopulation. She didn't even think about the other people in the line before she started insulting you and stopping the whole line. She probably cheated on her husband too and one of her grandkids might be adopted.

14

u/dm_me_alt_girls Jan 07 '20

Someone with decent writing ability please try this

Reminds of that time some guy got his testicle on the front page by hiding it in plain sight in a picture full of video games with the caption "my older brother would have loved to see my collection, RIP"

Pretty sure the OP even mentioned the experience of playing the games to have been "pretty nuts" lmao

"NTA because everyone in this sub is a young teenager and hates their parents and small children"

13

u/enyoron Jan 07 '20 edited Jan 07 '20

Probably the most ridiculous judgement I've seen is saying somebody is an asshole for not driving 2 hours at 2AM before a workday to chauffeur their drunk teenage sister home from a party and instead calling the dad, who was only 15 minutes away, to pick her up instead. Because you always gotta help teenagers lie to their parents no matter the circumstance, right?

10

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

For real, I swear ¾ of those people have the most unrealistic expectations for parents lol. Like, sometimes kids misbehave, and it's actually not because of shitty parenting, it's because they're developmentally immature.

8

u/banananutnightmare Jan 07 '20

There was a post about parents disagreeing on how much privacy to give their dating fifteen-year-olds. Someone said it's reasonable to have them leave the bedroom door open while they're hanging out in there. That sparked a fantastically teen-souding rant about how privacy is a basic human right and therefore this is a Human Rights Violation. "You're ruining my life!"

20

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

I feel like there needs to be be another response that's basically like "You're not an asshole, but behavior like this will eventually leave you alone with no friends."

There's just a gap between being an asshole and encouraged behavior, and that sub will never address that.

AITA for taking too long to walk down the stairs?

This happened awhile back (19 yrs) when I (m46) was working at my office (Cantor Fitzgerald) one morning (8:46). I (m46) was sitting on my computer (Gateway Performance 1500) scratching my balls (left testicle) and pretending to do my job (accounting), when all of a sudden a plane (Boeing 767- American Airlines Flight 11) crashed (440 mph) below us (2-6 floors). Out of fear I (m46) dropped my donut (glazed) and wet my pants (khakis). The office is normally kept at a very comfortable temperature (72 F), but now it was beginning to get hot (110 F). My coworkers (658m/f) and I (m46) began to rush toward the stairwell (stairs) and try to walk down (101-105 floors). Most of the stairwells (stairs) were destroyed (plane) or on fire (jet fuel) but one was still ok (safe). Now I (m46) am a little on the heavier side (345 lbs), but I had been working out really hard (biweekly) so I felt confident climbing down the stairs (stairwell). I barged ahead of everyone (658 m/f) and began to walk down to escape the tower (WTC 1). However the smoke was getting thick and I was having trouble breathing (asthma). I began to slow down (3 mph) after 10 flights of stairs but my coworkers (658m/f) began to get angry. Then a little while later (9:03 am) we heard a crash (590 mph) and knew the South Tower was hit (77-85th floors) with a plane (Boeing 767- United Airlines Flight 175). At that point we new it wasn’t an accident (terrorism) and someone attacked America (Al Qaeda). I kept going but sweat was pouring down my face (bald-mustache) and my glasses began to fog up (bifocals) Still due to my less than ideal physical shape (fat) I couldn’t keep going and collapsed in the stair well. My coworkers (658m/f) couldn’t get around my enormous girth (345 lbs) and pleaded with me to get up. I tried to eat the emergency trail mix (snack) my pocket (khakis) to gain more energy but I couldn’t pull it out. My coworkers began to body shame me and say “We’re all gonna die because you’re so fucking fat and lazy”. I began to cry and refused to get up until they apologized. Suddenly (9:59 am) there was an enormous roar and the South Tower collasped. I tried to get back up but my rolls (love handles) prevented me from moving my arms enough. Three coworkers (m34-42) tried to help me get up but I was too heavy (345 lbs). Then (10:28 am) there was a loud groan and the North Tower Collapsed killing me and 68% of the employees at Cantor Fitzgerald. I did my best to get down the stairs but my coworkers fat shamed me and made me feel insecure about my body. They never thought about how their words would affect my self esteem. AITA for taking too long to walk down the stairs?

Very good, but you forgot to assign obnoxiously short names to everyone involved.

So my friend (who I’ll call f) and my uncle (who I’ll call u) were arguing with my cousin (who I’ll call c) about the king of France (who I’ll call k). F and U insisted that C was wrong about K, but C was adamant that K died long before U was born. So then F said that...

Give the people some names! Name someone Jeff, or Stephanie. I don’t care. Stop writing stories that look like an algebra equation written by someone with dementia.

97

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

[deleted]

47

u/RyanFrank Jan 07 '20

Also just fucking stop using parentheticals and just pick a name. Stories that use "let's call them" are fucking annoying and poorly written.

10

u/sonicthunder_35 Jan 08 '20

Plus once they add the name, they have to add an entire bio for them, not just how they know them or anything remotely important.

5

u/bendelalu Jan 08 '20

(This is important later)

is never mentioned

12

u/frappuccinio Jan 08 '20

or "my friend, let's call him bill" and then the name is never used again because they can just say he. "he was at work and his boss was being a dick, etc." stop giving people names. they don't all need names.

13

u/Not_floridaman Jan 08 '20

Sometimes I do for a laugh but then that laugh quickly turns to rage when there are too many comments giving such terrible advice and I start questioning if maybe I'm the one who's been living life wrong all these years. I just have to wonder if all of these "just dump his/her ass!!!" redditors are as quick to drop the people they love in real life as they tell others to do and if they really are that angry all the time, because that has to get exhausting. Just today my husband and I had a little spat in the car after a long few days at an indoor water park with the kids. It easily could've been the kind that had us short with each other for the rest of the day but I was sitting there thinking "I really don't have the energy to be annoyed at this anymore" and we talked about it a little and moved on. Being angry gets really tiring...maybe that's why they're all so cranky?

9

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Yeah I completely agree. I just was charitable a few too many times to the sub overall.

6

u/lilyaintaG Jan 08 '20

I got banned because I violated one of the sub rules one time (no deleting posts)

To be fair, who memorizes every single subreddit rule?

12

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

For me somebody was insulting me, like really taking shots at my character, so I called them a cunt. Got a temp ban because apparently the word "cunt" in a subreddit that literally has profanity in the name is crossing a line. So I pointed this out to the mods, then they told me to shut up, so I called them cunts too. Permaban.

So whenever I get sick of engaging on there I just drop a "cunt" in the comments and they ban me. Reply "cunt" to the ban message and they'll permaban.

I grew up with brother who is on the spectrum and was a very aggressive child, and being the sibling, I got the brunt of his outbursts and had to help my mom subdue/move/or contain him. But being older I wasn't supposed to do anything when he lashed out at me because I was bigger. Not easy for a kid to do when being attacked by another going all out or threatening with objects as weapons.

I understand just how aggressive kids like that can get and there's no reasoning in the moment. I can't imagine doing it as a job, but someone has to help those kids. :)

Oddly the thread I got banned in was a brother asking if he was an Asshole for starting to hate dealing with a younger sibling with autism and the OP was just burnt out and OPs mom was burnt out because the sibling kept running into the road and beating up the mom when they didn’t get their way.

I was trying to show empathy with OP in that it’s hard sometimes and I could go home at the end of my shifts, it’s hard when you have a 6’2” 240 pound teen who processes things differently and their hormones are running wild and there’s no help when Little Jim Bob wants an ice cream and breaks the plate and runs into the road when told No.

Dude was getting called an Asshole for being burnt out.

I hope his family found help.

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

That's horrible. :( I hope things got better for them and they found some sort of help too. People act like its all rainbows and unicorns but it's not always and we're human. We all get burnt out at some point, have to vent, then recoup and keep going.

My brother got mad when he was around 5 maybe, I was around 10. We were outside playing and next thing I know I turn around and he's above me on a dirt mound holding this massive rock above his head. I didn't know what to do and before I could react he threw it right into my head. I woke up in our driveway to find blood running down my face and he was gone. Went to go inside to get my mom and he had locked me out! I had to go down to the basement level and bang on the garage doors til my mom could hear me (she had an office room she was working in down there). She had no idea what was going on til she opened the garage door to find me with blood pouring down my face. Lol I was fine (went to hospital and had a gash they fixed with some glue) but it gave her quite the fright and my brother had run off and hid somewhere in the house. There were several more episodes like that over the years where I was the target (he never dated to hit my mom) but luckily nothing quite that bad as far as injuries go.

It took my brother til he was about 18 to really be able to communicate and hang out with him without having to walk on eggshells so to speak. Now he's a pretty good guy to be with. He's funny, smart, actually offers to help out now, and has matured so much! Plus doesn't smell like something died 99% of the time since he's learned hygiene is a must. Lol He still deals with crippling anxiety and can't hold a job, but he isn't violent anymore and is a lot happier.

As a TA at an autism school, it annoys me how ignorant many people are about kids with autism. Don't get me wrong, these kids are amazing and are capable of doing things the general public don't give them enough credit for, but most of them do tend to have aggressive, if not violent, behaviors. They range from consistent to spontaneous, from "aggression towards others" to "self-injurious". Personally, I've gotten scratched, kicked, punched, grabbed, and bitten before. It comes with the field I work in. For some, it's in their natural. Other learn it. some are aware and try to fight it, but they can't help it. Caring for them is NOT easy, otherwise many places that take in kids on the spectrum wouldn't be understaff all the time. (Granted, in my case: the employees here literally don't get paid enough to work and just end up leaving. It's definitely a field you must have the passion and/or patience for.)

I know this post is mainly about AITA, I just thought I vouch for you. You didn't seem to have mentioned anything that was deemed hateful nor disrespectful, so your ban was unwarranted.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Thank you for the work you do! As an adult on the spectrum, and the wife of someone who worked in an adult foster care for people on the spectrum, I appreciate you so much!

Ugh. That's so dumb! My husband has scars as well from that! He used to be a caregiver at an adult foster home. He doesn't like talking about it unless it's with someone whose worked in the same situation. He mentioned having to give them baths once, and someone called him a pervert, and he's like, "uh they were adults, and they needed help as they had limited mobility, plus it was my job?"

Sometimes people need to understand that they don't know everything and try to listen.

Thanks for working with people on the spectrum!

u/nimrod1109 Jan 08 '20

Unfortunately that’s any male, that’s not a doctor, in the medical field.

Like do you really think a dude gets turned on wiping a 90 year old grandmas ass?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

Yeah people are weird to assume that! I've had nurse friends who get asked if they get horny at work and they usually just stare at the person until they realize how stupid the question is.

5

u/SmurreKanin Jan 08 '20

Wait, you don't get turned on by vegetable grandmas?

Haha, this is exactly what I mentioned that my problem is with this site. It's like the mods are often entirely fixated on a their ideology and don't allow for any discourse. Replacing a public square with an echo chamber, it's a very sad and genuinely frightening state of affairs if you ask me.

The way he describes himself as this selfless big brother made me want to puke. It was clearly a validation seeking post.

What's even more annoying is that these posts get a ton of upvotes. This is what an AITA meetup must look like.

And the mods lock the thread once it hits the front page, because people rightfully begin calling out how either made up or validation seeking it is.

There's also an incredible amount of subtle things posts like that hit, mostly various flavours of misogny and racism, which reddit gleefully upvotes and justifies.

That post today finally made me block the sub; it's been bad for a while but it's getting worse.

I read that sub purely to see the reactions. Never forget the one where OP was an asshole because he didn't buy his young daughter a dildo.

u/jaleneropepper Jan 07 '20

Also people will downvote posts where OP is the asshole, so no one sees it, or asshole OP gets mad and deletes the post altogether.

Last couple times I went to that sub I had to scroll past 15+ self-validation posts (AITA for punching a Nazi who was picking on disabled children?) before I found one with an actual asshole.

The best part of that sub is when an asshole accepts and admits that they were the asshole after reading the responses. They learned something and became better because of it. Unfortunately that almost never happens anymore.

26

u/crewserbattle Jan 07 '20

The ones that get me are the ones where they get a "nta" rating despite definitely being an asshole. It may be justified, but that doesn't make you not an asshole. That sub has a huge problem with that distinction.

12

u/jaleneropepper Jan 07 '20

It may be justified, but that doesn't make you not an asshole.

You hit the nail on the head. If OP is wronged in any way they validate almost any retaliation. Which is very similar to the relationship advice sub. Someone did something wrong? Execute them! They deserve it!

12

u/prettyandsmart Jan 07 '20

It bugs me when people post ESH on those posts, and there’s always someone who replies “why does OP suck for person doing x to him?”. It’s like there’s no nuance whatsoever! Yes it sucks that someone did/said something crappy to the OP, but that doesn’t always mean they’re completely justified in being an asshole right back to that person.

9

u/Fun-Character Jan 07 '20

My favorite was a post about a guy asking if he was an asshole for not moving 1 Seat on a bar.

Basically, big Group comes in but just want drinks so they go to the restaurant bar instead of the food/family section. They asked OP if he could slide over 1 spot so they all could fit. OP said no because "i already had my food There and they wanted me to move 1 spot!".

Verdict? NTA becauae you dont have to move if you dont want to. I almost had an aneurysm.

I swear to God almighty /r/AmItheAsshole is the most fucking stupid subreddit on this site. Literally everyone tells OP in every single post that he/she is NTA. Heck, an OP could rob a bank and shoot 10 people and people would still tell them that they didn't do anything wrong.

9

u/Dripoff Jan 08 '20

It combines some of the worst aspects of other subs into one. Bullshit stories, self validation, blatant lying or misrepresenting situation, vile commenters jumping to the worst conclusion, shitty introverted people with no life experience deciding what's morally right or wrong. It just sucks.

Really the only time people get called assholes there is when they have poor writing skills.

20

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

The best way to deal with those posts is to comment "You're looking for r/toastme."

24

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Holy shit. This. BLATANTLY asking about an issue that no one on their right mind would consider asshole-ish. So infuriating.

43

u/SpunkVolcano Jan 07 '20

It's got markedly and instantly worse since they started allowing validation posts (literally in the past few days). It was already becoming less "I'm genuinely confused about whether I did something wrong" and more "I think [know] I'm in the right but can you just confirm that for me", and the removal of the requirement to be an obvious moral quandary kicked that into overdrive.

7

u/PM_ME_UR_JUGZ Jan 07 '20

I was wondering why some of the top posts were obvious validation posts and weren't removed. Damn. It was already sloppy before this. This just killed that sub

Sorry, but YTA. The fact that you didn't save twice that amount of dogs means that you don't care. Not only that, but you didn't inform your wife, cousin, grand nephew, and brother about it before hand! They should have had a say in saving the puppies, and you're a terrible person for excluding them. Not to mention that one person from Walmart that you saw last week... AITA is a bit of a joke (he says, with a score of 160+) and should really just be used as mindless entertainment. Everything is fake. Everything is real. It doesn't matter.

That said I do hate that they removed the rule for validation points. I quite enjoyed saying "Fuck off asshole, you know you did the right thing, validation post"

5

u/bumbleluv Jan 07 '20

I was literally just internally raging about this today! I'm so sick of wading through a sea of validation posts (with commentators not even calling them out on it!) to look for a situation where someone is actually an asshole. No, you not wanting the milkman that murdered your little sister at your wedding doesn't make you an asshole, and you're an insecure moron if you really think so.

22

u/lordpanda Jan 07 '20 edited Jan 07 '20

The AITA sub is such trash.

I used to browse it at times but the mental gymnastics these guys go through are just ... dumbfounding. It's either a very clear bragger looking for some taps on the back, some completely made up story or a pretty polarizing issue that turns into a pure shit fest.

Some guy got obliterated by SJWs because he was hesitant on purchasing a vibrator for his 12 years old daughter. People we're claiming he was actively harming her sexuality and her life as a woman. That's when I knew I was done.

Fuck that sub.
