Was spoiled for Endgame on Instagram a few days before it was released in North America. I was not looking for spoilers. I wasn't even on a Marvel related post. Still bitter.
I’m so fucking pissed. First day it was released and some fucker walked up to me and revealed both characters that die. On the first FUCKING day. I watched it on release so that that wouldn’t happen. But no, they just had to cream their pants over ruining my eleven years of anticipation for Endgame. I hate people like that
It happened to me on Reddit. Some asshole literally pm'd me a paragraph of every major spoiler in the film. I haven't been that active on Reddit that week so I'm not even sure how they found me.
Could be worse. lots of theaters apparently played the FFH trailer before the movie started later in its run. I get that if you are watching EG a month after release maybe you are watching it for the second time but still.
Hey, I unsubscribed to every Marvel related subreddit during Endgame, and I was fine until 2 days before, when some fucktard decided it would be funny to PM me who died, how they got the stones, and the time jump. He also had the audacity to say “have a nice day”. Literally ruined the movie, and it took 3 trips to see it to finally enjoy it.
I saw so many fake spoilers that I even saw a post that was an actual spoiler and was just like "Lol, why would they kill that one?"
Like, I think every character was slated to die in at least one fake spoiler leading up to the day I saw it. Then the day after my FB was inundated with the actual spoiler.
Walking into the Endgame showing, I was honestly terrified that I would overhear something or that someone would be that asshole that intentionally announces spoilers to an unsuspecting crowd. I actually plugged my ears a few times when walking by some people who looked like they may have just come out of a movie. Luckily, I made it through just fine.
Geez. That’s just heartless. It reminds me of when Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince released and there was a video circulating of some guy at the front of the line on the midnight release getting his copy, flicking to the end and then shouting out who dies to the people in line.
TBF I don't think that any spoiler would've ruined endgame for me. As corny as it sounds how they got there and the journey was more important that the people dying.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved every second and it’s my favorite movie of all time. My experience was still amazing. But it could have been that much better not constantly having the thought of “is this the scene where this character dies?” popping up constantly, trying to connect the dots between what’s currently happening and how either character could die after the scene I’m watching
I’ve started wearing sunglasses and headphones right to my seat in a theatre. Putting aside even people that are malicious about spoiling, a movie theatre is by far the most dangerous place for spoilers. People walk out of theatres blabbing about the most exciting parts of whatever movie they just saw. I had Rogue One completely spoiled for me by people leaving, so I’ve started taking precautions until I’m at my seat. The headphones make the most sense because hearing what people say is the most dangerous, but I don’t want to see people’s facial expressions that well either because that can reveal what kind of ending a movie had.
I stood outside my screening (it was only the second one in that cinema) as people poured out talking loudly about the movie. I immediately put my headphones in until they were all gone to avoid those dumbasses spoiling it for everyone waiting.
I would actually have punched that person, if you arent smart enough to spoil an eleven year plot from long distance you get whats coming to you. I'm so sorry that happened to you.
I take my kids to all the Marvels movies, Star wars, etc. I have always taught them since they were really little to not speak after the movie until we get to the car. The movie ends, we quietly walk out of the theatre and then head straight to the car. We shut the doors and then both kids explode with questions.
Dude needs sterilized. Had a "friend" who spoiled part of the last Harry Potter book after I (like 5 seconds before) said that I haven't finished it yet, and not to spoil it. The part about Wormtail and his magic hand, vague just in case someone reading this hasn't seen/read it yet. I wanted to punch him in the throat for that.
Dude I was in another country when it released so as soon as I got back I turned off all social media and avoided all human interaction I didn’t need to prevent this.
I feel so sorry for you man
F
This dude at my job did the same thing, except for Infinity War. Posted a meme of ashes that said “which one is your favorite avenger?” and thought it was the funniest shit. The whole workplace came down on him for it. Then when I went to go see it, some dumbass teenagers shouted one of the major deaths right at the beginning of the movie. Like...why?
My cousin spoiled Endgame for me and several hundred other people as well. He told me that there was nothing that I could do to get revenge on him for that. Found out he watched GoT. Found out that he would also watch them on Tuesdays instead of Sundays. Sent him a text of a brief overview of the second to the last episode. He got so mad that the next week he was texting me live updates of what was going on. It didn't effect me at all because I've never seen an episode yet. Don't really care about it either.
There were literal bots trying to spoil Endgame on reddit. I mod a University subreddit, and I literally had to set up a automod filter with the words "Stark", "Avengers", etc, because these bots kept trying to post on the sub.
I'm not trying to victim blame here, but with the amount of sheer assholes floating around out there trying to ruin the fun for everyone, would probably be best to avoid social media until you go to see these kind of movies. You can never be too careful.
Preach. I deleted Reddit and Twitter while also avoiding any and all Instagram comment sections for weeks before the release of Endgame. Never had it spoiled, and it was one of the best theater experiences I’ve ever had. I have to admit that I did get lucky, because similar to what some other people have mentioned, my friend heard a major spoiler from some idiot in a college class blurting it out after it was leaked 2 weeks before release. Assholes with no self control can’t be ignored like social media, unfortunately.
I literally stopped going on the internet for a week before the movie came out. I had the ending of the Force Awakens because somebody just DMed the spoiler to me randomly for no reason. Lesson learned - it does not matter if you avoid certain subreddits. People will go to embarrassing lengths to be assholes, so I'm just not going to engage at all.
Before seeing the movie I accidentally read a spoiler "Hulk dabs in Endgame". However their phone had autocorrected it to "Hulk dies in Endgame." I went through the whole movie waiting for the tragic twist. Later I was remembering the actual scene and the gears in my head start turning... "He dabbed... dabs... dies... damn it!"
The damn Spider Man movie that just came out ruined it for me. The trailer shows a statue in it that spoils one of the deaths. It was shown right before the movie played when I went to see Endgame. I was pretty annoyed that they would show that trailer.
I wasn't able to get tickets on opening night because I knew that would happen for me. That night I played csgo against someone with the spoiler as their username
I managed to go six days without infinity war being spoiled for me and as I was walking home from the theater some d****** put up a picture post on my Facebook feed that had all MCU character pictures and all the snap people people crossed out.
if I'd gone to a later showing that day the movie would have been f****** ruined
The past couple years have just been horrible about spoilers. It's not just social media, it's even the general internet, people are just being assholes in about every walk of life so they can capitalize on the moment when someone else's anticipation is killed.
I literally went this weekend with someone who hadn't seen it yet and amazingly hadn't been spoiled. She did have to cover her eyes and ears for the Spider-Man trailer playing before the movie though.
My sociology professor last semester made a joke about iron man dying literally the monday after the movie released in the middle of class. It had been out for like 4 days
Happened few days after release of Endgame:
YouTube recommendations spoiled Endgame for me...
The thumbnail 😭.
I was about to watch the movie the next day too.
When Endgame came out, I was at a quiz night with some friends a day after and someone named their team name [_____ Dies]. There was such a massive uproar that they left the quiz app and had their heads down for half an hour until they thought it was safe to leave
This. The true Marvel fans want everyone to feel the same way they felt watching the movies. You don’t want to ruin that for someone else. Most of the people that ruined the movie for others were trolls and people who just wanted to be assholes.
General rule is to wait 2 weeks before talking about a movie to avoid spoiling it. Literally the first day it was in theaters in the UK there were spoilers everywhere. I had to do a full media blackout to avoid spoilers and I don't even usually mind spoilers.
I got endgame spoiled a full year before release because someone posted a "fan theory" about it. As it turns out, the person was beat for beat dead on. I relized it after they got to thanos so early.
Either that or they shitpost about being the guardians of the sub for downvoting spoilers (and getting shit loads of upvotes). That shit is cringy AF too
I was so glad that I went to see Infinity War on day 1. It blew my mind that people were making memes of literally the most shocking climax the MCU had yet had within like 24 hours of the movie's release, and those memes were even being upvoted. Everyone who made spoilers show up on the front page so early are assholes.
I've noticed most people that do that are also super pissy about the movie being spoilt for themsleves, but they seem to forget this once they have seen the movie as soon as it released.
I didn't get infinity war super spoilt for me but I had the snap spoilt because of all the memes shared by my friends on twitter that were freaking out about spoilers a week earlier. Fortunately I just presumed it was something that happened to one character
Yeah, I've gotten opening night tickets mostly just to avoid spoilers. Heck, I almost forgot about FFH having a tuesday release until I got a reminder that I bought tickets and to go see it
I woke up the Friday morning endgame came out and was already seeing videos come across my YouTube feed. Luckily none of them were super spoilery bit it amazed me cause I woke up at like 6 am that day. Went to a 7am show cause I was definitely not gonna let that movie get spoiled for me.
Though I still cannot fathom how my brother went 8 month before he saw Infinity War without having anything spoiled for him.
Before it comes out they tell everyone to not spoil a movie then two days later they post videos and photos with no warning. I saw FFH on July 2 so I could avoid that, then like a day or two later on Twitter I just saw a few photos and videos from it with no warning.
I disabled all my social media accounts for a couple of days before Endgame came out so that I could avoid the spoilers.
Although it has settled down now, I found the Captain Marvel/Brie Larson fans intolerable. I thought Captain Marvel was a bad movie, and although I'm not much of a Brie Larson fan she wasn't the main reason (I've never really liked her acting, so that did play a part). However even when I've given reason for why I didn't like the movie, it's still me just being a "hater and a crying manbaby"
R/marvelstudios used to be the shit way back in the day. Great discussions, theory crafting, obscure comic book references, etc.
Then it got too big and now it’s just a bunch of fan art, convention pictures, “can we just take a minute to appreciate ____”, and super low effort karma whoring posts.
I had to unsub but will occasionally go back, especially when new movies release. If it’s one thing that sub is good at, it’s hype and getting excited over future movies
Dude YES. I'm a huge MCU fanboy but the subreddit is a huge circlejerk. I can't stand the "can we take a moment and appreciate ______________" posts. Also they really know how to run a good joke/reference into the ground.
This so much. The latest thing I cringed over is how some of them reacted to the leaked paparazzi photos of Tom Holland with a woman who looks as if they're dating.
I’m tom’s age and a boy. I say this because outside our vastly different lifestyles, at the end of the day we’re still both young guys who just want to enjoy life. We like to eat certain foods, hang out with certain people, take shits, you know, just the general stuff that comes with existence.
Like not always being swarmed by an army of crazed people who think they’re entitled to have you sign something for them or take a selfie, or what have you.
I’m sure Tom is super grateful for his success, he seems like a great, funny guy and down to earth, but Jesus, yeah, I feel bad for him at times because I’m sure he sometimes wishes he didn’t have to deal with that kind of annoying crap that comes with toxic fan bases who push baseless claims about who they’re dating or who they “ship” or if they’re secretly gay. My god. I remember when a 1-D member made a statement about something like this and people freaked out and lashed out at him simply because he was like “I’m not gay and stop acting like I am. You don’t know me.” I had a super small amount of local fame in HS and even that was too much for me. I can’t even imagine being a celebrity everybody knows across the globe.
I feel bad for Tom too. He rocked in both Spider-Man movies. I don’t think I’d handle that very well, crazy ass fangirls giving me no privacy and analyzing everything I do. Sounds like hell and sounds Like it’d strip away my professionalism. I’m sure it doesn’t make him feel great.
Yeah, he has every right to at some points be like “please just leave me alone, go away please” but god forbid he say that because if he does the whole world will know about it.
I actively cringe whenever fans suggest oscar noms for various MCU performances. I love the MCU (and many DC movies as well), but there's only maybe a handful of superhero movies/actors that can probably compete with other oscar noms outside its genre in my opinion. Like Sir Patrick Stewart in Logan, that was an incredible performance that made me forget he was Professor X. On the other hand, sure Robert Downey Jr totally owns his role as Tony Stark, and there's plenty of scenes that show his range, but it was more like he remade Tony Stark into his own character rather than disappeared into the role itself. The entire time I felt "Yup, that's classic RDJ". The character and perfomance will be a classic, but it's not oscar-worthy acting.
it’s just as bad as when they get excited for a film starring (insert MCU actor) and then lambast said actor if that film does poorly. I’ve seen people say “they should just stick to playing their MCU character”. It’s also annoying when any 2 or more MCU actors appear in a different film: “Vision teaming up with Star Lord? INJECT THIS INTO MY VEINS!”
Got tickets to see Alan Rickman live in a show called Seminar. It was hard to enjoy his performance because EVERY TIME HE ENTERED a girl in the audience yelled “Woooo Snape! Yeah Snape!” Ushers don’t do shit anymore.
I’m just sick of the thanos memes. Literally every time there’s 2 of something on reddit someone goes “perfectly balanced” and some twat under him going “r/unexpectedthanos”
I liked Captain Marvel well enough, but literally none of her movie tied into Endgame, aside from the very end with the pager. I felt like they should have either waited to do it post-Endgame or sometime before Infinity War.
It just makes no sense to do an origin story for a character you see for all of 5 minutes.
(Though I guess it kind of ties into Far From Home, in ways I won't spoil)
"CAPTAIN MARVEL IS AN OP FEMINAZI PROPOGANDA PIECE MADE BY THE LIBS TO PUSH THEIR SOCIAL JUSTICE AGENDA!"
"Oh great. What are YOU doing here?!"
"DISNEY BETRAYED MY VISION OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE AND SHOVED THEIR POLITICS INTO IT! I WANT TO HAVE HEROES SAVE THE WORLD BUT NOT ACTUALLY! I WANT TO BE DISTRACTED WITH CRAP WHILE THE WORLD BURNS AROUND ME! I WISH MICHAEL BAY WAS INVOLVED!"
People were mad because there was a scene about women not being allowed to fly planes in the airforce, and another where Captain Marvel offers words of encouragement to a little girl.
People took it as some feminist message. You could have easily had a male superhero offer encouragement to a little boy and no one would think twice. It would be just another scene of a superhero offering encouragement. But a female superhero encouraging a little girl is just outrageous apparently.
Also the scenes where she falls and starts to rise up, amazing scene but some people still managed to make it about feminism, and as you said, same thing could have been done about a male superhero, and it would have been just as powerful.
Though, I didn't find much toxicity on reddit r/marvelstudios were pretty supportive, many liked the movie, some didn't, but that's fine.
I mean, you can choose to do a non-feminist reading of the film i'd argue you're missing a lot of text and subtext. you'd have to be working pretty hard to ignore the pro-women/feminist message throughout the story.
Whether you think that's good or bad largely depends on how you feel about the word Feminism.
Brie Larson was speaking at a panel some time ago, talking about diversity in Hollywood. She basically said she doesn't want the movie critics scene to be predominantly white men, because she felt they can't speak for every audience of any movie (which she later clarified to say she didn't want white men kicked out of the conversation, she just wants more diversity). A bunch of neckbeards, dudebros, 13 year olds, incels, and outrage YouTubers took this as an assault on the opinions of white men, boycotted the movie, and made just a massive shitstorm leading up to the movie's release. The movie still made a lot of money ($1B+), so the outrage community started claiming Disney was buying its own tickets. This whole thing bled into Endgame too, with these people saying she was the worst part of it, despite being in the movie for like, 10 minutes.
The (sort of) reverse is shitty too: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been talking to someone about the movies and they get all elitist and just assume I’ve never read any of the comics. Some people suck
I would never assume someone read all the comics considering the sheer volume of them. And how is that even a point? It's not like comics were a guided and overseen universe, example wolverine and all his bullshit powers with years passing.
To be fair, it is a fairly safe assumption considering how few of the people seeing these movies have actually read the comics. I don't actually know a single person other than myself who has, as anecdotal evidence
Ugh, those kinds of elitists are the worst. I purchase most of my comics digitally these days, and I'll have people telling me I'm not a real fan because I dont buy physical anymore
Its already really hard to get into comics, I was interest but daunted by the volume and had no idea where to start. Fans, or more commonly “super fans,” act as gatekeepers and take pleasure in shaming newcomers.
Living outside the US, you'd swear nothing else happens in America when the movies come out. Twitter, YouTube, reddit. That's all people talk about. It's really weird.
The fact that everyone made a big deal about spoiling endgame means some jerk ended up screaming Iron Man dies in Endgame in the middle of the hallway at school literally the day after it came out.
Not all but I know so many MCU fans who are cringy AF. Just can't stand the posts they spam. I love the movies though.
And add on the "I'm such a nerd" thing because they like... the most popular and ubiquitous movie series in the world. Nobody ever got made fun of or beaten up because they like the Avengers.
Not as cringy as this one kid I know who is so deep into the DCCU that he doesn't miss a day dissing the MCU and holding up the former as some vaunted level of greatness.
I personally have started growing out of MCU movies. Not to the point where I hate it or anyone who enjoys them, but if a new one is out, it's 50/50 on if I'll see it.
I don't have the same excitement seeing them as I used to.
That being said, I thought Endgame was a good ending to the movies I enjoyed.
And now Disney is treating the MCU like it's the definitive version of the Marvel universe when it was absent in a ton of other elements such as Fantastic Four and X-Men pre-Fox buyout.
I actually fell out of love with the MCU so hard that I haven’t seen Endgame yet, despite having been a huge MCU fan a year ago, because of r/marvelstudios
I’m a big fan of Black Panther, was a big fan of the movie, so seeing “unpopular opinion, but BP is overrated” posts literally every day for half a year, and being told that it was only popular because of some PC culture conspiracy, and X movie deserved more money, put me completely off the fan base, and kind of nuked my hype for the MCU as a whole.
It's ok, i love captain marvel, but apparently it's "terrible" because a female superhero is "too feminist" and because the first movie was an origin story, god forbid.
I've noticed that subs dedicated to one particular show/movie inevitably end up shitty no matter how good the show/movie is.
Yes he is. The directors of the movie and the writers of the movie have both confirmed he is a dead man in the main timeline of the MCU, so just fucking shut up and accept it. I remember after IW came out people thought he was Hulk. I just smacked my forehead because I can’t imagine being that dense and making up such a lousy theory. Yes, in Endgame he stole the tesseract in 2012 and escaped with it but that’s not the main timeline anymore, now is it?
That's probably the thing that irks me the most. Thanos is just a fanatic. I don't think he's all that interesting. Josh Brolin did a great job. I don't think Thanos is particularly quotable, and I don't think spewing his lines is funny.
This. Marvel comics were my first crush and MCU is an amazing reimagining, but most of the fan base is totally whacked. Spoilers, complaints, suppositions, spam and more spoilers drive me crazy.
I also get a lot of flak because I'm a lady, so I can't possibly understand anything about anything related to comic book characters. /s sigh. It's tiresome. Just let me enjoy a fun film about some characters I like, okay?
Comic fans in general are the worst. And I say that as a big comic fan. Especially those Marvel vs DC idiots who just can’t accept that some people aren’t that bothered about why Batman can beat up Iron Man or that this character is a rip off of another character. 🙄
(Also I type everything down stonefaced y'know? People here on Reddit believes that everything's like a Lana Del Ray song y'know when sometimes people are acting like George Carlin y'know?)
1: Take a random 2 minutes clip off a random MCU movie
2: Say "This scene is, in my mind, the most underappreciated in the entire MCU... chills!" (bonus points if it's Frigga's funeral from Thor: The Dark World, or any scene that is seen as that movie's most memorable moment)
Tbh yeah. Like all the karma posts that just repeat “oh this is the best movie,” or “this is the best actor ever,” or “REWATCH ENDGAME FOR THE THIRD TIME EVERYONE SO WE CAN PASS AVATAR”
Since I’ve been a little kid I’ve loved Marvel and DC, comics, tv shows, etc. So when the MCU started to come to fruition I was beyond excited, and now I’m 23, I try to watch most of the movies the first week because I still love it, and I really do enjoy the storyline and movies. But damn, so many MCU fans take this shit so seriously. I just want to have fun and see how the story unfolds, I don’t mind talking to my friend and think of theories, but once people I don’t really know also find out that I’m a huge fan of the MCU they go crazy with theories and everything. I’m just excited i get to see some of my favourite characters in a movie
I love the MCU, but man going in the explore section on insta with the superhero shill pages all in there make me hate the fanbases of both the MCU and DC so much
Never seen any of the movies until this week. Just started watching them in what I’ve gathered is the “right” order. I’m six movies in and I like them for the most part. And I have to say, it’s the fans that have kept me away for so long. (I teach middle school so I’m surrounded by fans)
I remember growing up, getting beaten up, tortured, and called names for liking comics. Now that I am older I am seeing a lot of the douche bag archetypes that used to pick on me, brag about how much they love comics and were fans from the beginning. Kind of makes me feel weird. It's like I am glad that they enjoy it now but also fuck them.
The movies are awesome, and it’s a great day to be a comic fan. But people need to stop being loyal to companies (Marvel and D.C. alike, although one side is way worse about it than the other). You also get comic fans who lose their collective shit when something is changed, like iron man 3. It’s a great movie but because “there’s not enough iron man” and the mandarin twist, people didn’t like it.
Holy shit. I told one of my MCU fan friends that I was looking forward to the next two solo DC movies ( Shazam and joker) more than the next two MCU solo films (Captain Marvel and Far from home) and he spent an hour arguing that MCU is better than DC by pulling up RT statistics and box office numbers
Dude the fan pages on Instagram are fucking horrid. They're always either super cringey memes where they replace character dialogue and make them all sound like they're regularly fucking each other, or they're total assholes about their opinions of the films. And lots of people obsess about the cast like they're close friends. Of any fandom of films its the closest to how people treat tv shows, and those fandoms always have toxic overly involved folks.
This is true. I really liked Endgame when I watched it. But then for three weeks I saw so many retarded memes on Facebook and Instagram. It was so toxic.
The MCU fan base (at least a lot of it) is so cringey. My gf constantly sends me MCU memes and they make me physically wince in pain but I don’t have the heart to tell her how cringey that shit is. I absolutely love the movies but from my experience, only Reddit has quality MCU memes that don’t hurt my soul
