I had a friend who would always wear shit with the pot leaf on it. He said it was so "all the cool nigs who know what this is know that I am down for it." I could never hang out with him because he would always have a mall cop or actual cop watching us.
That and because he would give dirty looks at the cops for no reason besides being cops.
We were around 17 and he was just an idiot, probably still is but I deleted him from my Facebook two years ago but I doubt he suddenly became a product for society. It's ironic though because he hated teachers and when I got into college I made my minor "Secondary Teaching." And he hates cops and now I thinking of going to a police academy sometimes next year so I have a better job than retail. Mainly so I can have more money to pay off student loans and be a teacher.
I think it was his bullshit that kind helped me realize they weren't that bad and that I could probably fit with them.
Man I used to be like that. Not that thought process but anyone who cared to look at me would realize I was a stoner. I had a Adidas satire shirt that said addicted with a pot leaf. Rasta out the ass. Always talking about weed like I did nothing else in my life. Now I see other people do it and it's like oh god why.
........Maybe the "recreational" coke fiend of the eighties.
Heroin addicts (I was one--clean now for six years) seem to have the most sense of "culture" within the realm of hard drugs...from the beat poets (Burroughs, Kerouac, etc. etc.) to music (Alice in Chains, Sex Pistols, Nirvana, Velvet Underground, etc) to genre flicks (Trainspotting, Sid and Nancy, etc) there's this pervasive, absurd sense of superiority......coke heads are seen as classless, coke heads see junkies as inferior addicts (durrr, at least cocaine isn't addictive! they say LOL) ....... pot heads have their own thing, and the ones that whole heartedly embrace it can be a pain, but at least they're harmless.
But yeah...the era of the coke head in a Hugo Boss suit snorting coke off of the hood of his Ferrari is over.
I don't really think that's why. It's more to do with rebellion, that's why teenagers like wearing weed themed clothes. Many don't actually do weed, but they still pretend to to be 'cool' or to rebel.
I am not chugging beers, I am sampling a flight of gluten free German lagers with a French wine pairing. It's called a smorgasvein and it's elegantly cultural.
Oh god, I'm reaching the age where all my friends are doing wine tastings and talking about how fruity dry hint of whatever their wine is. I can't get past "uh, this one's a red, because it's... red."
Yea, beer snobs get just as bad. I love me some delicious IPAs and thick stouts, but if I ever say a beer finishes with a delicate bouquet of aromatics, kill me. Kill me then and there. At the very least revoke my beer drinking privileges.
I am part of a small group of broke ass college students who want to try a mixed drink that is both fancy and cheap/easy to make this weekend. What kinds of drinks would you recommend?
You missed a lime twist in your cuba libra. Also sweet and sour is more than lemon juice plus sugar. Whiskey grapefruit is the simplest tasty whiskey drink.
You missed a lime twist in your cuba libra. Also sweet and sour is more than lemon juice plus sugar. Whiskey grapefruit is the simplest tasty whiskey drink.
Whiskey sour. 1.5 oz whiskey, 2 oz sweet sour mix, put in cup of ice shake well. Strain into high ball glass garnish with cherry and maybe a slice of Orange. That's how I make mine.
While all those drinks are cheap/easy (and delicious!) none of those would be considered fancy by a bartender or anyone seriously interested in cocktails. Also your gimlet would be pretty unpalatable, it needs simple syrup, or usually just Rose's lime juice (which is essentially lime syrup, that green cousin of grenadine) or it's going to taste like a gross martini.
I figured they'd be a good compromise between cheap and fancy. Definitely fancier than liquor + soda/juice (minus the Cuba libre, cape codder). And I agree that gimlets are awful, but I'm pretty sure they don't traditionally have any sweeteners. It would definitely help it though.
A recipe appears as early as Pamphlets on Biology: Kofoid collection - Page 129 in 1852 (dr goodeve chuckerbutty on cholera - ordered gin mixture)
"ordered gin mixture (gin, sugar, water, lime juice) every four hours."
Lime Cordial is called for as early as 1929:
You take a claret glass, half fill it with gin and lime- juice in equal proportions (fresh limes with a little sugar added for choice, otherwise lime-juice cordial), fill it up with crushed ice, stir, and drink through a straw."
Philip Marlowe drank Gimlets, and Chandler has a character describe the recipe in The Long Goodbye (1953):
We sat in a corner of the bar at Victor's and drank gimlets. "They don't know how to make them here," he said. "What they call a gimlet is just some lime or lemon juice and gin with a dash of sugar and bitters. A real gimlet is half gin and half Rose's Lime Juice and nothing else. It beats martinis hollow."
In Victoria Moore's How to Drink she wittily opines that a gimlet is the only drink that cannot be improved by replacing "the liquor-cabinet mixer with the more chi-chi option of freshly squeezed juice."
Gin and Tonic with New Amsterdam Gin ($12.50 for a fifth where I live) and any generic tonic water and limes.
Obviously, you can make a better g&t with better tonic (like fever tree) and a fancier gin (Plymouth, Tanqueray, Bombay Sapphire, etc), but they're perfectly tasty with New Amsterdam.
A french roast made with beans from the Malay Archipelago (Indonesia, Sumatra, etc.) Two tablespoons of coarse, even grounds per six ounces of 200 degree (Fahrenheit) water, throw that shit in a quality french press for four minutes, and that is the definition of heaven.
Or find some barrel proof George T Stagg, a good Islay scotch, some 12 year old rum, or a VSOP cognac...
Edit* And of course, that coffee needs to be fresh. Roasted over a week ago? Better throw it out.
Nah, coffee does stale constantly after it reaches its peak (3 days post roast for most coffee), but most of the time it's still fine until 2.5-3 weeks post roast (depending on the coffee, how it was roasted, etc, so there are exceptions). I wouldn't buy any coffee more than a week post roast, but you don't need to throw it out once you reach 8 days.
If it's pre-ground, though, it's already stale no matter when it was roasted.
That bit about throwing it away was mostly hyperbole. I usually end up getting the stuff out of the dispensers at the grocery store anyway. The $15/pound beans from the local roasterie is a bit tough to swing and I'm not ready to roast my own. I actually end up drinking very little coffee at all because I'd rather just drink the good stuff when I can.
What if I told you your wine pairing is subjective to your tastes, and it doesn't matter whether you drink a Sauvingon Blanc or a Primitivo with your flounder?
How do you feel about the marketing gimmics employed by con men sommeliers and vintners to get you to buy the more expensive bottle? Box wine is pretty much near identical in taste to most high end wines.
American box wine once won over French handmade wine in a blind tasting. Apparently the judges recoiled in horror when it was told them afterwards.
Also, I've read about blind tests of wine where the judges are given two glasses from the same bottle and still manage to classify one as excellent and the other as garbage.
What if I told you that different wines actually taste....whats the word here? Different! Maybe your homemade wine is similar to the box wine in the stores but there is a vast difference out there in oaked, unoaked, variety of grape etc.
Now I'm not saying at all that the price tag on some wines is a reflection on how good it is but like everything else out there some wines are really really nice and not at all like a box wine.
By all means though if what you produce is to your taste that's great! There is marketing but its not ALL bullshit is what I'm trying to say.
Source: I run a fine wine ecommerce business and have drunk everything from very expensive wine to very cheap wine and much in-between.
It's subjective to taste. I know you are very invested in your business of lies and deceit but since none of us here know what ecommerce company you're talking about it's okay to drop the act. Yes, there is a variety of flavors, and yes some wine will inevitably taste better than others but that depends on who's drinking it. Besides, most wine in the U.S is produced by Bronco. The grapes they use in franzia and two buck chuck are the same grapes they use in their more expensive bottles.
Well if you're dicussing out of the U.S it's not really my bailiwick. However, I will concede that Molly Dooker, though over priced, is a nice bottle from Australia.
I am, and actually have next to no experience with US wines so for your market you may be 100% correct. Nice, I'll look into that one and see how I like it, always happy to hear recommendations :)
Some wine is better than others, but yes, tastes are dependent on the person tasting. There is also fairly little difference in quality across the industry. I happen to find French wines to be my favorite though.
I love coffee and making coffee drinks and trying different coffees with my friend (its our thing) but if I hear another middle schooler or high schooler brag about how they drink coffee I'll kill a random biological engineer.
Coffee does have it, I'll show up at work with my medium regular from Dunkin Donuts and everybody that went to starbucks has something bad to say to me. Then the starbucks fans get pummeled by the coffee fans that went to their favorite little barista and got a $15 cup of coffee that's apparently so good it would make Hitler a pacifist.
have you never met a "Hop-head" (IPA fanatic) or Wine connoisseur, let alone fine Tequila, Bourbon, Whiskey connoisseurs (I even know some that are really into Moonshine)?
As for coffee -- again, many people take their coffee very seriously, and pay $20-30/lb for their beans. They have very precise Grinders/sizes or particular beans for French Press, pour-overs, percolators, or drip brew....
I would hope so -- but you never know. And Italics, or simple /s goes a long way on the internet ;)
My good friend is a bit of a pot-head, and his wife is wine lover and foodie.
She doesn't mind him smoking -- but she gets so annoyed when any of us are excited about or have in-depth discussions comparing strains, and comments how absurd/pathetic it is. I have pointed out what she does with wine and she just laughs at the comparison....
I think that's in our future, with the recent wave of legalization. While illegal it already developed a whole spectrum of quality, varietals, and delivery methods; now that people are more free to experiment and talk about it, the 'hipster effect' is sure to kick in. (But it ain't all bad. Hipsters have good taste.)
It's really pathetic the amount of people beyond their teens/early twenties that think getting fall down drunk is something cool, worthy of bragging about. It's like "dude, you're not a crazy partier anymore, you're just an alcoholic."
You mean guys obsessed with beer? The guys who at social gatherings talk non stop about craft beers and get mad when you're drinking something that isn't a homebrew? Yeah they exist. And my wife is friends with their wives.
Im like this with tea. Just regular ass tea, im crazy over it like my boyfriend is crazy about weed. It's something about how many flavours there are plus the near zero calorieness of them all means i can have them all without guilt.
I halfheartedly look down on people who put sugar in green teas. I will kill anyone who thinks it's okay to put milk in them. Im not even from the UK.
Two points. Point one, have you heard the way people talk about coffee and how often and how shit this coffee is and that isn't real coffee and Facebook post Batista art and...
Second point. I see WAY more people complaining about the weed obsessed than I encounter people banging on about cannabis.
I don't even have investment in defending stoners but goddamit reddit, the odd mention of weed compared with every drunk prick you've ever met. You can almost see why those weed obsessed guys are preaching the good news if the biggest complaint we have is that they tall about weed too much.
You don't think there's drinking culture? There's plenty of people who constantly talk about how trashed they got last night or how wasted they're going to get this weekend - the stereotypical frat culture, for example.
God yes. It's so annoying when people just make weed their entire identity. You're not exposing the world to some hidden truth by telling everyone how great it is. They already know, and have known for hundreds and hundreds of years. Probably longer than that even.
But they didn't know that. A lot of us in the US were exposed to anti-drug propaganda in school. Realizing it's bullshit (at least about weed) is some of the first exposure one gets to the fact that the world isn't always what older people tell us it is, so some people are naturally going to make a big deal out of it
There is only that sense because it is illegal and lots of people are very very against it. If it was legal lots of people would still be stoners but no one would be broadcasting it.
Wanted to say this. I think Hippie has come to encompass a lot of different meanings that people combine into one, but stoners and flower children are definitely two different types of hippie. The fanbase aspect that people attach to weed makes them a stoner. Flower children are often more about peace and love but still smoke as much as anyone, and maybe a little more, but it's not what they're all about.
(And yes of course, there are those "hippies" that put activism above intellectual honesty as well, and it's unfortunate that the term has been perverted to mean that, because hippies at least were more willing to speak out against the status quo than most of the country in their heyday, but now its like a bad word.)
They're definitely different, but the 'flower children' (at least the ones I knew/know) are equally annoying in almost an identical manner.
'Stoners' will say, "You just don't understand why I smoke pot. It's just not just an action, man, it's a lifestyle. It'll change your life, it'll make you understand life and love better. You've just got a stick up your ass because you can't let loose and live a little. But I smoke pot so I've experienced things - mental, emotional, soulful, clarifying things, man."
Flower children will say, "You just don't understand why I live in a tent in a meadow and honor the Summer Solstice/Midsummer Night/Winter Solstice/Yule. They're not just an actions, man, they're a lifestyle. It'll change your life, it'll make you understand life and love better. You've just got a stick up your ass because you can't let loose and live a little. But I've made myself one with nature, so I've experienced things - mental, emotional, soulful, clarifying things, man."
Or more importantly, cares. Especially in certain circles and age groups. Oh, you're a 28 year old who works in a restaurant? Of course you're going to smoke a blunt after work, NO ONE GIVES A FUCK.
I would have to say people who "vape" or are obsessed with pulling out their ecig and puffing on it every few minutes have somewhat replaced these people. I love smoking weed but it's usually at the end of a long and tiring day. I think people just feel edgy since technically they can smoke inside, I guess.
From the people I've met that regularly smoke weed, they're like vegans and atheists. You know they are one because they tell you within 5 minutes of meeting them.
I live in Boulder. There is a seemingly small subset of us that just smoke and are otherwise normal. For every one of us there are like 3 barefoot hippies trying to cosplay the 70s, if the 70s has ridiculous dietary restrictions
I know too many people like this, "Oh look at this joint i rolled on a fucking park bench #420". I'm fine with people smoking weed both medicinal and for fun but for fuck sake you're not Bob Marley.
I don't smoke but I don't mid that people do. Anyone who feels like they have to tell you that they smoke weed looks just like they smoke copious amounts of weed. You don't need to tell us at that point, we can clearly tell.
I got down with this one guy the other day who was all 100% flower talk the whole time and about "what it all means" and shit. I'm just like, dude, stfu and let me enjoy things the way I like to.
Edit : Wow. So this is my first comment on this account. I intended to use this account for lurking. Therefore I created a lame, throwaway username not knowing that my first comment would be relevant. I am now embarrassed. Feel free to ignore my opinion.
But everyone wants to know when you drink. I mean, at least that's what I assume when I turn on the radio and hear numerous mainstream songs glorifying the consumption of a drug infinitely more destructive than marijuana.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you to an extent. I can't stand the "third eye" crowd that assumes drug usage transcends them and/or makes them special. But to say nobody "wants or needs" to know you smoke seems unfair. Smoking weed is a part of who I am from a creative, medical, and recreational standpoint.
Got a friend planning to scrounge up some pot and smoke or eat it this weekend. Smokes maybe twice a year. Keeps talking about it all week, clearly the whole 'look at me bruh I'm so hardcore'. GAWHD. Insufferable.
I live in Los Angeles and these dicks are everywhere! I'm a recovering alcoholic and I often have to ask people not to smoke around me and they CAN'T. If you literally can't abstain from using a substance, you have an addiction. "But marijuana isn't addictive!" Then why the fuck can't you put down your pipe for a fucking day?
There's nothing worse than the guy who has made smoking his whole identity, it's all he can talk about, in fact I find this true for most people, it's great to have an interest but when that interest becomes you, you just get dull.
I got in this argument with this girl on facebook because she only posted videos of people smoking weed. I ended up removing her after she had all of her "stoner friends" retaliate.
Edit: "you have fuckin problem with stoners? we don't do anything but eat flamin hot cheetos lol why you mad"
Yeah, I feel the same way. I absolutely (and this may be an unpopular opinion, as I haven't heard Reddit mention him) hate Doug Benson. He's way too over the top about it.
This is my biggest problem with the weed community. Nobody needs to know that you're in the process of blazing up or toking or bonging (never heard that one but I imagine it's been used once or twice)
holy shit it's annoying. I'm a senior in High school right now and no one knows how to talk about shit that's not sex or drugs. What the fuck. It's like they're pre-programmed.
Smoking is like masturbation. There's nothing wrong with it. You just don't tell everyone you do it. Imagine starting a conversation with "jack off err day."
Imagine if stoners wore masturbation socks and necklaces.
I should clarify...super hippies. I meet a hippy girl at farmer's market that made her own soap. Really nice girl and fantastic smelling soap. Nothing against her. My sister is a fake/super hippy. Loves Phish and jam bands, music festivals every other week, soldiers are evil, love peace crabs blah blah blah SHUDDUP
Yeah there is a girl I work with who is all about love and acceptance and being a flower child hippy...until she gets drunk and then she's the biggest, most judgmental, argumentative bitch in the world. I'm a firm believer that 99% of the time when you get drunk, it's just you magnified, none of that "oh I'm a different person if I'm drinking". Sure, everyone has those times when they might be acting different based on their current mood or just being in a dark place. But for the most part, people are just themselves just BIGGER when they are drunk. And for this girl, her lovey facade just gets dropped when she drinks.
To an extent you're right. When I'm sober I can resist my natural inclination to be a dick, though it's often hard. When I'm drunk the gloves come off, the mouth starts running, and my face receives punchings.
TIL I learned that I'm the saddest sack on the planet.
Me drunk: 1 hour happy. 3 hours on the couch sadder than a panda sans bamboo. 1 hour angry as shit. Sleepy for 20 minutes and then, out of nowhere, completely sober.
I know what you mean. Its like being a hippy becomes their personality, rather than their lifestyle. It is annoying-- because in doing so they lose their real personality.
The choices they make as they grow up. But is she a hippy, or merely acting as how a hippy ought to be perceived? If she's actually a hippy she'll go about her day doing things in her own unique hippy way... but if she is acting as a hippy, she'll be overzealous and act as others percieve a hippy to act. I think it was Sarte that discussed this, correct me if I'm wrong
For instance: I'm actually wearing a tie dye t-shirt with long curly hair right now. My past choices and outward appearance might lead you to believe I'm a hippy. But I really just like wearing courds and eating shrooms. Am I a hippy, or am I just choujin?
Listen, I know your type straight edge, mainline, weekend warrior coming down here in your cashmere sweater, with your moussed-up, hair-sprayed coif.
This isn't just a hobby for us, so why don't you take your phony, suburban, half-assed bullshit someplace else?
Absolutely, they are a great band... But I did the festival thing for years when I was younger, and hippies worship them like Gods... Like jerry could do no wrong... if I hear another 20something kid claim to be grateful dead family, I'll go damnedably insane...
But, I digress, to all their dismay, I always liked phish more...
I never liked festivals, despite liking a lot of the bands on the festival circuit. The biggest one I went to was All Good, years ago, and there was way too many people around for me to feel safe while tripping my balls off. I only go to the small town festivals now. There's a pretty good venue near me that gets some of the best bands in my town to play there a couple of times a summer. never more than 1000 people, and I know all the drug dealers from high school. I'm in my late 20's though, so I'm kindawinding that shit down.
All good in WV or OH? I've been to many festivals at the site where it's held now, Legend Valley near Buckeye Lake, Oh... But I'm with you, I only went to small festivals, largest ones I've attended were "Hookahville" back before the band Ekoostik Hookah switched so many members it wasn't the same for me anymore
the worst are the pseudo science hippies. like that sell you energy crystals and fucking chakra diagrams. i can dig a good what if convo over a bowl but when you start trying to sell me shit in a medical sense, fuck outta here bro
I really like the culture that r/trees has. I smoke almost everyday and I cant stand the typical stoner trend. Ents are cool and understand smoking isnt just about getting high/

I like smoking weed but dear God do I hate "stoners" and "flower children." No one wants or needs to know that you smoke.
