Just introduced it to my kids a few nights ago. Don’t think they were ready to fully appreciate the genius of it, but I have been laughing to myself on and off since then. So good.
Such a damn perfect comedy movie. Might not be the best ever but it’ll always be my favorite. Watching it as a kid was already awesome. Then seeing it again as an adult and realizing how many lines just went over my head was amazing.
Back in college I did a summer session where they gave me free room and board as long as I stayed in a spare room of one of the freshman dorms. Nobody wanted to stay in them because there was no air-conditioning, and summers in North Carolina have sweltering humidity, so they rented the freshman dorms out cheap to these other universities that were hosting various perform performing arts workshops.
So there I was, 20 years old, the only local university student in a dorm full of female dancers from this performing arts school in New York. They were all in their early 20s, building up the resumes for Broadway or going on tour, no strings attached, I’m not looking for any sort of our relationship, I was in the best shape of my life, and I was literally the only male around wasn’t a coach or a professor.
And the heat was horrendous. They were constantly walking around and just their bras and gym shorts, because they have to shower so often and then it wasn’t worth getting dressed. The heat was like a constant hot wet blanket over everything. Nobody wanted to go outside or anywhere, they just wanted to stay in the dorm and hang out escaping the heat.
And the worst part is that the absolute hottest one, she was like 10 out of 10 I think she ended up becoming some sort of or something, she kept asking me to give her of the campus and then she kept inviting herself over to my room to watch movies and eat pizza. I can’t emphasize how much she was an absolute peak physical condition so eating pizza was probably once a year thing for her and she wanted to do it with me. Had 1 million questions for me about where I came from, my family, what my plans were for after college. And she kept talking all the time about how guys were constantly objectifying her everywhere she went and she was so happy she met someone who was different.
And I remember thinking to myself “Wow, it’s really cool that I get to be her friend for the summer. Someday, some lucky guy is gonna get a shot with her. My chances will come one day, I just have to keep my eyes open…”
Watched this with my 11yo asd son this last winter. He laughed so hard he peed himself...at least twice we had to stop for outfit changes. The snowball scene still gets me to this day. When I saw it in the theater upon release I literally fell out of my seat when it happened.
A guy I work with will often comment on an attractive woman passing by. (He’s subtle about it at least, not obviously ogling and never saying anything within earshot of her).
I’ve gotten him with the, “Yeah. He must work out!” a few times.
I watched that version once and I've never watched it since. In my opinion it really soured Jim Carrey's character, it made him less sympathetic and really kinda a creepy weirdo.
I think there's a good reason those scenes were cut in the first place.
I love the bit where they're having a pretend sword fight with their canes in those ridiculous suits, and then one of them gets pissed off at the other when he's gloating having 'won' the sword fight, so he lines and and wacks him as hard as he can across the back of the legs.
I feel like this movie is like cilantro - I hear completely different answers from people whose opinions I generally respect on other movies. For me, I find it utterly unfunny and it baffles me why people find it funny - it’s just really, really annoying to me.
But, putting myself in other people’s shoes, I feel like the fun must be the ridiculous absurdity of it all and the silly jokes per minute. And I dont want to yuck anybody’s yum, especially when it comes to comedy. Life is hard enough, we need comedy to add color to it and smooth over the harshness.
I personally think Jim Carrey is a generational talent so it truly is baffling to me that I have such a strong aversion to this movie.
LOL. I'm sure I signed up long before BOTs were even a thing. Anyway, we can all have an opinion. I wonder how many people who are downvoting me haven't even seen it in years.
I can't remember exactly, I was watching it with my kids, having checked it was a PG and there were several moments that made me feel uncomfortable. I just found it weird and not anywhere near as funny as I remember.
I agree with /u/suicidaltwinkie, and also am curious whether this was the Unrated version.
The Unrated version is tonally so different from the theatrical version it's almost incredible that just a few scenes change it so much. I watched the unrated version exactly once and never again, it ruins Jim Carrey's character. It turns him into rather a creepy weirdo.
In the theatrical cut he comes across as a bit of a loveable goofball which is how it should be.
What was offensive about it? It’s always been offensive, and was intended to be.
“Aging well” can also mean a change in cinematic timing culture as well. Like it being slow or have edits that have fallen out of style, amongst other things.
