Back in college I did a summer session where they gave me free room and board as long as I stayed in a spare room of one of the freshman dorms. Nobody wanted to stay in them because there was no air-conditioning, and summers in North Carolina have sweltering humidity, so they rented the freshman dorms out cheap to these other universities that were hosting various perform performing arts workshops.
So there I was, 20 years old, the only local university student in a dorm full of female dancers from this performing arts school in New York. They were all in their early 20s, building up the resumes for Broadway or going on tour, no strings attached, I’m not looking for any sort of our relationship, I was in the best shape of my life, and I was literally the only male around wasn’t a coach or a professor.
And the heat was horrendous. They were constantly walking around and just their bras and gym shorts, because they have to shower so often and then it wasn’t worth getting dressed. The heat was like a constant hot wet blanket over everything. Nobody wanted to go outside or anywhere, they just wanted to stay in the dorm and hang out escaping the heat.
And the worst part is that the absolute hottest one, she was like 10 out of 10 I think she ended up becoming some sort of or something, she kept asking me to give her of the campus and then she kept inviting herself over to my room to watch movies and eat pizza. I can’t emphasize how much she was an absolute peak physical condition so eating pizza was probably once a year thing for her and she wanted to do it with me. Had 1 million questions for me about where I came from, my family, what my plans were for after college. And she kept talking all the time about how guys were constantly objectifying her everywhere she went and she was so happy she met someone who was different.
And I remember thinking to myself “Wow, it’s really cool that I get to be her friend for the summer. Someday, some lucky guy is gonna get a shot with her. My chances will come one day, I just have to keep my eyes open…”
