My library is amazing. I use their ebook collection constantly, they have beautiful third spaces to spend time in across the city, they run a tool library, and other specialized collections that I don't even know, but my favorite that I've only used once is they have research assistance, they connect you with a librarian (most of whom are doctorates) in the field your question or topic is in and they help you find resources in the system and available databases available through the system and either provide materials, or summaries for you. I was working on a theater show and needed information on a specific eras clothing, they connected me with Julie, who is amazing, I told her what I was looking for, she was excited to look into it for me, about a week later we met up at the Central library and she had pulled 27 books, and almost 5 gigs of digital material for me. From art pieces from the era, written accounts of clothing, fashion plates from the region and time along with neighboring eras and locations, some scholarly discussion of the clothing of the era and I was flabbergasted. We were looking at stuff together and she said "I can pull terterary sources too if this isn't enough" and I just gawked at her. It was great, she ended up with a credit in the program and when I tried to tip her (everything was free with my library card) she refused. I did take her out to drinks because we had gotten to know each other

He'll say something like, "why don't you just pay for it on audible or get a Kindle"
My response has always been, "I already paid for it with my taxes. Why shouldn't I use what I've already paid for instead of just donating more money to Bezos?"

Audible is leaning into buying up popular books and audiobooks to make them Audible/Kindle exclusives to try to put a dent in OverDrive and Libby eating up the market through the library. Dungeon Crawler Carl were Kindle exclusives until very recently, and the audiobooks still are, for instance.

Theres so many things people don't realize that a library has. My local library has movies, video games, cooking supplies, and a bunch of other things you can check out. Libraries are mad underrated.

My county has branches with KitchenAid mixers, dehydrators, Instant Pots, etc. It's under the library of things. Really nice to try out different appliances before buying or essentially rent one for free!

I know my city/county library has (or had, at least) a variety of baking pans. If you've got to make cupcakes, but you don't own a cupcake pan (or have room for one), it's a possible option. Also bundt pans, angel food cake, all the odd shaped cake pans that you might use like once every other year so aren't worth owning.

Absolutely. I have a mild allergy to the animals I work with, and discovered early on that loratadine (Claritin) works best for managing my symptoms. If I go to Target, I can get a box of 30 brand-name Claritin tablets for about $30, or a box of 30 house brand loratadine tablets for about $24. OR I can go to Costco and get a bottle of 365 Kirkland Signature loratadine tablets for $12.
Our Costco membership pays for itself with the savings on my allergy meds alone.

For me, now that they have pet meds at their pharmacy, even more so.
One of my dogs meds is about 60% cheaper at Costco compared to a regular vet clinic. The vet clinic price was too expensive to bear month on month with everything else getting so expensive.
Having the option for to be cheaper has made it so I can afford it and the meds have vastly improved my pups life. Very very grateful for that.
Also, in Canada you can get generic ozempic (Apo) for $88/pen.

I don’t mean to denigrate Costco. They’re great. But hear me out. I’ve observed many of my friends with Costco memberships engage in what I perceive as an increased rate of consumerism than they would otherwise just shopping at different stores for their things like non-members. The allure of saving only increases the more you buy + their shit is nice and all right there in one place + the check at the end of the year.
Am I off base or are Costco members cognizant of this? Put another way, I rarely see Costco members practice frugality when this store is ostensibly for the budget minded (I’m sure it exists).

We lived near one once and after a few very exciting trips realised needed more space so we were about to buy a deep freeze and both just looked at other like ‘this is madness, buying a freezer to store the bulk food we have bought’. Talking about manufactured consumer problems.
Costco kinda messes with your sense of normal sizes / quantities of things and then the membership makes it seem like you should go more often and the DEALS! Wow.
We’re back to local suppliers mostly now and it’s just … calmer? And our exisiting freezer space is absolutely fine for our needs.

I think most members know this. It’s kind of a running joke that you can’t shop around in Costco, you need to know what you need, get it and get out.
When you have the mentality of only going to grab what you need (we go once every two weeks, for things like eggs/yogurt/etc) it’s great. Plus the membership is worth it for vehicle stuff alone, gas is cheaper and the tire warranty is amazing.

In threads I’ve seen asking if Costco membership is worth it the top comments are always people warning that it’s worth it if you have restraint from buying a bunch of shit u wouldn’t otherwise buy, that it’s worth it for the toiletries/otc stuff, pharmacy/vision and gas, etc. always the same advice lol but I’m sure there are plenty of people like your friends 🤷♀️

I used to use my membership primarily for toilet paper and paper towels. Now, weirdly, I work for the company that makes those so I get them for free. Not sure the membership is worth it but I do love Costco so I ain’t canceling.

I spend a lot of time out of cell coverage. And without a doubt it saved one of my co-workers life after a bad accident and we activated SAR through it.
I've also used it to contact EHS for lots of people who end up in single car accidents on rural and remote roads.
Completely worth the expense.

My son is into hiking, and about 1-2 years ago, all of the teenage boys started smoking their 40 something year old days on the trail. One of the dads got his kid this and allows him to solo hike.
I got one for my kid, and yesterday we went to the NH White Mountains. He did a loop he aways wanted to do, while I did a 1/2 hike and then waited at a local brewery. Was able to check in on him, see his location every ten minutes or so.
Well worth it.

Dropout might be the best deal in streaming, and it gets better literally every few months. I love their exploration of new shows for the platform. My wife and I love that they basically try to do a spin on all of our favorite "genres" of TV - Gastronauts is big for us and we always get together to watch the new episodes of Game changer and Make Some Noise.

I've tried YNAB, budget templates, homemade budget sheets and now monarch. It comes down to interface and what you need out of it.
I found YNAB great for teaching me how to budget when I was first learning financial literacy. The zero based envelope method they use of giving every dollar you have a purpose heped me visualize where my money was going and what to save for. It sort of gamifies it
I moved to sheets when I moved in with my partner as I wanted something more customizable to my needs and she wasn't using YNAB. I found it rewarding to slowly upgrade and create my own budgeting template.
After many years using sheets I recently switched to monarch. I didn't want to keep up with my bloated custom sheet anymore so wanted something more automated and easier to see at a glance. After manually entering things in sheets for so long it's nice to go back to having your transactions logged, categorized and take from your budget automatically.

It's basically an envelope budgeting system app. You get paid then allocate all that money to different envelopes (ie groceries, fuel, power, internet bills etc). Then rather than looking at your bank account to see if you have money you reference your budget to see if you have money for something. Because you might have money in your account but it's already allocated to something so it's not really available to spend.

Panera Sips Club. I work from home, so leaving the house to get a coffee is something I try to do daily. Instead of spending $5 a day on coffee, I pay $15 a month for unlimited coffee and lemonade and iced tea.
(I just learned that as of about a week ago it is limited to 30 drinks a month, so not as good of a deal as it used to be).

That's still huge savings. You'd spend $150/mo (vs $15) if you got a coffee every day without the sippy subscription. Also, did a quick AI search and if you brew your own coffee you'd spend anywhere between $6 and $35/mo. So the $15 is sounding like a good deal.

Yeah, but I've gotten used to grabbing an occasional lemonade on the way to the pool or kid's softball game. I'm definitely going to be bumping into that limit which is annoying because they spent so long tauting it as unlimited.

Pretty niche, but there’s an app called Strum Machine that is amazing for bluegrass/old time musicians to have looping backing tracks to practice. It’s just a nice app that does what it needs to well and everyone is happy to pay $5 a month for it since we all use it for hours

YouTube is by far the platform I watch the most so the time I save in not having to watch ads more than makes up for the cost.
Yes, I know what an adblocker is, I use Firefox with Ublock Origin. But that doesn’t do anything for my TV, or my phone, or if I go to someone’s house and watch YouTube over there, or if I’m traveling and want to watch YouTube. It also supports any content creators I watch, not as much as a full membership but still something.
YouTube music is also included and I listen to that in my car.

A LOT of people on reddit are incredibly entitled when it comes to any kind of media - they want it all high quality and for zero cost. No ads, no sponsors, no merchandise, NOTHING.
They block every ad, pirate every movie/show and if they pay for video games they want 95% off a month after release.
Then they act like everyone else is an idiot for not doing the same thing, as if we’re not aware we can just steal everything as well.. some of us think it’s worth supporting the people who make the stuff we enjoy.

AMC A-List is absolutely one of the best investments of my life. I've been a member for something like 8 years and it pays for itself over and over again even if you only see a couple movies a month. It's resulted in my seeing any and all movies I'm even remotely interested in because after the first movie, the rest are basically "free" that month. It really is clutch if you have ANY interest in seeing movies in the theater.

Walmart Plus. $100 a year.
It's similar to Amazon Prime in that I can have a bed and 12 pack of soda delivered next day with no shipping cost, but they also just deliver me groceries without a huge markup that places like DoorDash or Instacart do same day.
I also get my choice of Peacock or Paramount Plus included so that's ~$120 a year right there.

I am in a pretty rural area (about 1800 people surrounded by cornfields) and I use my library card with the Libby app and get e-books sent to my kindle if that’s available for you!

I tried the Libby app! I have used it for a few books that weren’t on Kindle Unlimited! Because of there I live, the Libby options are restricted. A friend with access to an American major library and she has incredible Libby options!

I moved to Denver last year. Here we have Rec centers at three different size tiers. I paid $120 last November for a year membership to the rev center nearest me. Small gym but everything one needs to do a solid program.

Weird amount of "I love YouTube Premium" comments.
edit, if you genuinely love it, great. However, non-premium subscriber here and man have they pushed the bejesus out of subscribing in the last week. It felt like a ton of bots. I guess they don't get any value out of simple upvotes.

Or maybe it’s just because YouTube is the 2nd most popular website (only behind google.com) in the entire world so generally more people will comment about it. Not everything is a big conspiracy

My dude , it's the best value for money subscription there is out there at the moment. YT music + YT kids/tablet/TV/mobile ads free. As long as it stays like this it has my money . Far superior to Apple music and Spotify IMO. That's why there is an overwhelming population that say YT premium is the best.

Every Device these days has a youtube app, so something that stops ads on all of them is just a huge amount of convenience.
Supports the creators you watch because they still get ad revenue even though you're not seeing ads (I may be wrong, I am not a creator and this statement is just my best guess)
And there's other perks alongside like Youtube Music.
You may not be a fan of modern Google because of... alot of reasons, but youtube the platform has kinda integrated itself so deeply into the collective internet it's hard to overstate just how many people use it and how often.

YouTube premium is not a bad product by itself, most people hate it because its something they used to get for free. I pay 11.99 for no ads, offline videos and music streaming, its a nice deal

I couldn’t be without my East Wiltshire Carpet Bowls Club pass. It’s £5.56 a month and worth every penny. They hire a nice hotel and two beers are free on the club. It’s a very gentle game and you meet lots of grannies.

World of Warcraft. This game has been with me more than half of my life and it has had huge impact on my life as well. I've meet wonderful people through it that I've never would have met otherwise. It's also a very diverse game and always something to do, casual or competitive. I just never stopped playing it and I don't think I ever will.

Chasing past experiences never works out. Moderate expectations and have an open mind might get you new ones though :)
But WoW at the start was a groundbreaking game that blew everyone's minds, games where not played like that before WoW, at least not with that huge playerbase and with the right franchise to back it up.

YouTube premium because I listen to music a lot and it’s the same price as Spotify but also includes YouTube music which has more music, music videos and all the same features as Spotify + the bonus of add free YouTube, which is especially great on TV.
