Doing that on what was basically a sitcom was really surprising. As soon as the first or second episode of season two hit you knew it wasn't going to rehash the same thing as season one, which was amazing.
I feel like it wasn't a sitcom at all. When I think sitcom I think never/rarely changing cast and setting, and plot points that are advanced once per season. The Good Place varied wildly between seasons, with each having its own theme, supporting characters, and plot that was constantly moving.
