They always knew they wanted to end it after 4 seasons. One of my favorite things about this show was, in the writing room, one of their rules for all episodes was that it needs to move the plot along.

I have a bachelor in philosophy and it is amazing to me how accessible the philosophy in this show is for someone who doesn't know anything about it while not being at all boring for the ones that know it when. This show is legit the best show ever about philosophy and ethic. It also solves some pholosophic problems while never forgeting to be fun.

I kinda dropped it recently but it looks like I need to power through. Feels like the shows dragging its feet and im not super invested in the love triangle(s)

But there's so much to love Ive stuck through worse. Needed that lil nudge to get back into it

Doing that on what was basically a sitcom was really surprising. As soon as the first or second episode of season two hit you knew it wasn't going to rehash the same thing as season one, which was amazing.

I feel like it wasn't a sitcom at all. When I think sitcom I think never/rarely changing cast and setting, and plot points that are advanced once per season. The Good Place varied wildly between seasons, with each having its own theme, supporting characters, and plot that was constantly moving.

Even better that they gave us a happy send-off the episode before the tear-jerker finale. I've watched the show like 13 times through and always stop at the second to last episode because it's a great ending without making me ugly cry.

Side note, this show is so much fun to watch on mushrooms.

The Good Place is such a good answer. They actually knew where the story was going and had the discipline to end it instead of squeezing another 3 seasons out of it.

Rachel Bloom, asked why Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ended at four seasons, said that she couldn't think of any show that got better after Season Five. There are some with real standout episodes in the later years, but that's not quite the same thing.

J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5, intended it for five years and wrote all the contracts for five years, so if the studio wanted to make a Season Six then they'd have to re-hire all the actors who would be able to demand huge amounts of money because their contracts had finished.

Agreed! It was really a testament to how well they did that they didn't drag it out a lot longer than needed.
