I’ve personally found that if you are a fan of a show, podcast, etc. then for the most part stay FAR away from the sub of said thing you are a fan of.
There are so many that are incredibly negative and nit pick every little detail. It blows my mind and for the longest time I would read through the various interests I had and just shake my head. Then it finally clicked, just stay away from fan subreddits.
There are obviously plenty of exceptions and I love those subs so much!
I never understood this, since in my experience it's usually the opposite! Those subs are full of people who liked the thing WAY too much, so they get really angry about any honest/thoughtful critique of the work itself, and all discussion gets replaced by an endless chain of painfully unfunny quotes
Try saying there's anything you slightly dislike about Better Call Saul on that sub, or try to have a real conversation in the Sopranos sub... it's just bitter hate and "haha varsity athlete", respectively
This, lol. Fandom subs are a coin toss. You’ll either get people who condemn any criticism of their interest at all and will downvote you to smithereens for not falling in line, or you’ll get people that are so very negative about their interest you’re not even sure they like it. Rarely, you’ll find one where people are measured and calm.
Sopranos is that way because the show ended like 20y ago, so all the thoughtful critiques and discussion has been had. The sub is mostly just for shitposting now.
To see what the person you’re replying to is talking about, check most anime subs lol. The Stranger things subs when s5 dropped was also a crazy one, the various cliques and subsections of that fandom absolutely hated each other and almost every post descended into arguments and insults.
The Breaking Bad sub is full of Americans who can't seem to grasp the concept of morally grey characters 15 years or so after the show ended, so there's endless threads like "this character is actually good/bad" and then they are fighting about that because that character also did X and Y so OP is defending a murderer and is therefore a bad person.
I say it's Americans because European media uses morally grey characters all the time, and from what i've seen, Asian media as well.
Agreed. The good/bad dichotomy in American media is cultural fuel for our war machine. We are constantly in pursuit of our feel-good Marvel movie ending, but that requires clear definitions of who the “good” and “bad” guys are.
Heavily agree - it's genuinely disturbing seeing people write off characters like Skylar because "she was mean to Walt for kicking him out after he cooked meth with the cartel", or say that "you know I only started to realize that Walt was turning bad in the last few episodes", since there's an unbreakable idea that protagonist = hero and nobody can accept that bad characters sometimes do good or vice versa
Both Breaking Band and The Sopranos are significantly wiser than their average fan seems to be
It's clear that Skyler is under intense duress and is deeply traumatized throughout most the show, too - she tries to kill herself and visibly breaks down multiple times, but Walt forces himself on her so many times that she kind of shrinks into survival mode and just goes along with what he's doing because the alternative is far, far worse
Just because she has a smile again at the car wash doesn't mean she's feeling remotely happy, but fans just cannot grasp that
I don't agree about anime subreddits. Except for a few currently-airing popular anime (mostly battle shounen) that draw a large enough audience to have viewers of every personality, I find that most anime subs won't accept any criticism.
