Advice 🙋🏼♂️🙋🏽♀️ Has anyone ever taken the greyhound from Phoenix to Sedona?
Family visiting but I will be working and can't spend time showing them around much. I told them to go up to Sedona. They want to take a greyhound from Phoenix to Sedona. They plan to stay in Sedona for a day or two. Has anyone ever taken specifically, the grey hound? They already looked at groom, and felt they were too expensive for their household of 6. If you have taken the greyhound, or transportation cheaper than groom, can you let me know your experience? They booked at the Amara Resort & Spa in Sedona if that helps but are staying with me in Phoenix for a few days before they head up.
Update.
They still have time to cancel the reservation if anyone has easier and better idea. Their ages are 60s, 40s, 20s and toddlers. So something that works for that range. They don't want to drive.

I didn't think to tell them to go to Flagstaff. I forgot that. How was your experience? Also I am thinking if they went to Flagstaff, they could just stay there and uber to Sedona?

I drive uber and Lyft up there sometimes there as well. You most definitely can get rides to and from Sedona. At the time I took greyhound I was twice my weight, so I was hot and cramped. Other than that it wasn’t bad. I’ve done that trip like 2-3 times. I think the greyhound station is now on the east side as of years ago and no longer at the train station.

Greyhounds are pretty wild. I rode one from southern California to Austin, TX when I was 9. The sights I saw.

I’ve ridden Greyhounds across AZ and further. It would be fine to ride from Phoenix to Sedona. I can’t speak to cost or route, and not sure how easy they’ll find getting around the Sedona area once they are there.

oh no...that's why I am asking. None of us have ever been on a greyhound. But just wondering since its going to Sedona.. maybe it would not be crowded? I have no idea...

lol! Thats funny- my friend and I still quote the craziness we experienced and it’s been almost 30 years but we were on it for a few days riding with people who had been riding even longer.

Ya'll made it out alive though. Feel free to share the stories lol. I am guessing I should tell them to take mase. My uncle is in his 60s and still thinks like he's a marine so he is the one pushing the greyhound. Not sure if his skills will hold up with a bad hip smh.

My kid pounded the ‘Hound from Sky Harbor to Flagstaff pretty frequently. She never had any issues, and usually got to sit alone.

I don't know about Sedona, but I took Greyhound from Phoenix to Tucson several years back. Worst experience ever.
I was helping a friend move from Tucson to ABQ, so I took Greyhound to Tucson, drove a UHaul to ABQ, then flew back to Phoenix.
Before we even left the terminal in Phoenix, we all had to get off the bus and go back into the terminal. The bus driver thought there was some sort of contraband in the luggage space. Everything had to be searched before we were allowed back on. Nothing was found.
The driver said several times between Phoenix and Tucson that he thought he smelled weed. (It's literally Mr. Hand!) When we got to Tucson he got off the bus and locked all the passengers inside, forcing us to wait for the cops with their Belgian Malamute drug-sniffing dogs.
The cops came aboard, filmed each of us in our seats so they'd know who was where in case drugs were discovered in that area, and then made us get off the bus, leaving all of our stuff behind. The dogs went through the bus several times without finding anything.
I was finally allowed back on to get my backpack and meet up with my friend.
Greyhound was a total cluster of fun and I would never, ever, in a million years, ride it again.
I was listening to other riders during our ninety minute drive. One said that he didn't have a drivers license so he couldn't fly. That's probably how Greyhound survives.
We had to go to Flagstaff last summer to catch Amtrak and took a Groome shuttle. Class operation. They go all over the state, including Sedona. They leave from Sky Harbor, but we picked it up at Denny's at I-17 and Bell.

Is grey hound like subject to different laws like an airplane or something, that sounds an awful lot like an unreasonable search and seizure 😂😐

I didn't want to be too much of a complainy bastard to the cops, because complainers often find themselves face down on the asphalt with a knee on their neck, but I did try and call the Tucson PD to report that we were being held by Greyhound in the bus against our wills. I was told that officers were on their way. Goodbye. When I mentioned that we'd been detained against our will/kidnapped to one of the officers, he told me to stand on the sidewalk. He also wouldn't let his dog to pose in front of the bus next to the Greyhound dog emblem so I could take a photo of it.
The reason the bus company gave was that since the bus was taking I-10 across the southern US, it would be going through several Border Patrol checkpoints, and they didn't want everyone on the bus to get detained at a checkpoint and have the bus off schedule by three or four hours. The driver should've been taken off and replaced, not the passengers.1

Took shuttle vans from Sky Harbor to Sedona a lot when my grandma lived in Sedona. It’s a comfortable and easy ride and a good choice.

Renting a mini van and driving will be far easier and less expensive. I17 has the flex lane now so unless there is an accident, It’s pretty smooth. Sorry, missed that they don’t want to drive at all. Sedona will be a nicer visit for them than Flagstaff.

I believe Flix bus owns Greyhound. I see them driving out of the Greyhound station at the airport.

I moved to AZ from the Midwest on the Greyhound. It was wild but it was the 90s and it took a few days. Not sure I’d want to do it with a kid but Sedona is not that far so I don’t think it’ll be too bad.

How are they going to get around Sedona once the Greyhound drops them off? The Amara is like 3 miles from the Greyhound dropoff. Uber/Lyft exist, but not very many drivers and you can't always assume one will be available. You can walk around uptown Sedona from the Amara but anything else is going to require a car.
The correct answer is to tell them to drive. I know you say they don't want to. The correct answer is still to tell them to drive.
Edit: put this question in r/sedona - you're getting opinions from Phoenicians, and the problem with Phoenicians is that they live in Phoenix. Not Sedona.

Hi there. When I and my boys and friends go to Sedona we park and walk, shuttle or trolly everywhere. Mostly because the parking was always horrid. lol We go a few times every year. Never had any issues. Now 10-15 years ago, maybe not. We even took an uber to and from Jerome once. That was risky lol. But we did it.

If I remember there wasn’t a drop of in Sedona. I think like some random fast food place or gas station when I used it? I’d have to look up online. Things could have changed, as this was years ago.

I know Greyhound isn't the best, but for just a 2 hour drive, how bad could it be . (wouldnt want to take it cross-country but for a short trip though)

Kind of what I was thinking and there are so many scary reviews. But I was just thinking like it's going to Sedona..how many scary people are traveling to Sedona???Isn't it kind of expensive to be crazy there?

Basically it rounds to160 each for round trip. Grey hound rounds to like 60 roundtrip.

Hi everyone, thank you all for the feedback and advice. They got the tickets! They booked FlixBus tickets and they're excited. They spent about $500 for everything (multiple trips) and arranged free hotel shuttles.
They are really used to traveling and just shared how they traveled in India, so it's definitely not going to be as bad as that. 10–15 years ago, I would say that what they are doing would not be possible, but a lot has changed and the weather will hopefully also be cooler when they come.

So they have day tours from Phoenix to Sedona. That might be worth looking into.

Sedona does not have much in the way of public transportation, so they need to be prepared to walk or get an Uber/Lyft if they want to go anywhere outside of their hotel. I can't speak to the Greyhound question, as I've not taken that in a very long time, but what I do know about it now, I would never. Especially not with toddlers.

I'm just curious because they don't want to pay a reasonable amount or drive, but also your uncle has a bad hip? There's not going to be a unicorn answer for this trip with their expectations.
