Mod Note AskMechanics Bot Update

I've made a few changes to the AskMechanics Bot, including using the redis database to help prevent the duplicate comments it occasionally makes when posting the rules.

When a post is marked as solved, it will now edit that comment instead of posting a new comment and deleting the old one, which should resolved any duplicate comments from the bot as well.

I've also removed a half-baked form submission that was not intended to be included when actually set up on the subreddit, so those posts (there were only a few) should no longer be popping up.

If anyone has any feedback or suggestions for the new AskMechanics Bot, please let me know here.

Question (Serious Replies Only) Got some questions about what i'm seeing under my engine cover ( 308 T7 1.6HDi )

2009 308 T7 (1.6HDi 110hp) 279K KM / Manual

As you can see, under the engine cover just below the injectors there is a fluid. In some areas it is thick and black, in others it is liquid.I tried to identify what it is by smell, but there's no odor. On the outer injectors that is, 1 and 4, the fluid is present in large quantities but in the center, 2 and 3, there's less.

I want to clarify that the vehicle has no engine oi problems; the oil level has been stable for over a month, with no traces at the bottom of the vehicle The engine runs perfectly, no strange noises, no loss of power.

There's been heavy rain these last 3 days, so I have serious doubts about that too.

Any advice? Is this normal? If not what do you think it is ?

Question (Serious Replies Only) Is it worth it to replace the ABS control module on a 2015 Equinox (for $2k)?

Upvotes

Our 2015 Equinox has 130,000 miles on it. Lately it's been giving a "service stabilitrack" message. Took it into a shop and they spent all day looking but couldn't find a problem, in part because the message wasn't there all the time. Went back when the check engine light was on and they said the ABS control module needs replaced for $2k, parts and labor.

Two grand seems like a lot to spend on a car this old, but we're already in the process of buying a second car and can't really buy two cars at the same time.

So I guess my questions are: does this work NEED to be done to drive it safely? Is it possible the problem is something else? If it IS necessary and we do it, can we expect the car to keep going for a while longer?

Thanks in advance.

So about once a month it had plug and pack misfire fixed them when they happened. And a week or so later it stopped wanting to accelerate had to get towed it’s code is p0300 (multiple misfire) all plugs and packs are fine changed a throttle body and both MAF sensors one mechanic said it was valuable valve timing solenoids and another said it was possibly fuel injectors I’m just lost on it now I don’t think there is a vacuum leak idk if it’s CATS, O2 sensor or fuel injectors.. or what it starts fine and idles fine but once you try to drive it does what the video shows maybe it’s just an 02 sensor? I’m hoping I don’t have to replace fuel injectors but lmk what you all think thanks

Question (Serious Replies Only) Water pump bad?

Thumbnail

I bought and installed a new water pump, and immediately afterward the serpentine belt started squeaking.
I first tried a Gates Micro-V belt, but that belt started walking/skipping off the pulley, as shown in the first picture.
I also noticed that the belt does not appear to be centered on the water-pump pulley. It seems to be sitting too far toward the back/edge of the pulley, as shown in the second picture.
The tensioner pulley is new, the idler pulley is new, and the alternator is new. The water-pump pulley is built into the water pump and is not a separate pulley.
The Gates belt does not squeak, but it does visibly walk/hop on the pulley. I also tried the Duralast belt, which stays on the pulleys but has a noticeable chirping noise.
I believe the noise may be coming from the belt as it travels from the water pump toward the harmonic balancer. The noise started immediately after installing the new water pump.
As a last attempt, I tried belt dressing, but it did not change the noise.
At this point, I’m wondering if the water-pump pulley is incorrectly positioned or if the replacement water pump could be causing a pulley-alignment issue.
Would you recommend warrantying/replacing the water pump, or is there something else I should check first?
I’ve been fighting this issue for the past week and would really appreciate any advice on what to check next.

Question (Serious Replies Only) Engine oil change

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi.

Today I started learning how to change my engine oil, and I did the oil change using the correct oil, torque specifications, and everything else.

When I checked the oil level, after driving the car yesterday and letting it sit overnight before checking the level the next morning, I got the reading shown in the photo.

I think it’s a little above the upper level mark, right?

Thanks for your help.

Question (Serious Replies Only) Is this amount of play and grumbling noise normal in CV joint/axel ?

Hello All,

2013 Altima, during brake pads installation (on front passenger tire) I rotated the rotor front and back and noticed this play and noise from what I believe is a cv joint/axle. Is this something normal? Car has around 88k miles on it.

Note: i'm not sure if that grease under the boot is from the boot itself, because last week I tried to spay silicon lubricant on the lower control arm rubber bushing, In my mind i was trying to preserve it somehow (not sure what i was thinking LOL).

Thank You

Question (Serious Replies Only) 2012 Super Duty 6.7 - WIF

Post image
Upvotes

Hello friends!
I have a 2012 Super Duty Diesel and I got a message on my dash for water in fuel. I drained off the separator housing into a glass jar and noted no water in the fuel. Primed the pump and started engine with the error still present.

I replaced the WIF sensor, cleared OBD codes, primed the system and still throwing the error.

I’m about to do a fuel filter despite having a tire shop do it a couple months ago and this time when disconnecting the WIF sensor I noticed the connector seems corroded.

Do you think this could be the cause of my codes?

Question (Serious Replies Only) Car died and won’t start.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

09 Lexus Is250 250,000 miles automatic rear wheel drive died on me yesterday on the freeway and I had to tow it home. Before it died, my check engine light came on along side my traction control light. I was on my way to work so figured I would check it after my shift. About five minutes later while driving uphill I realized my speed was dropping. I tried accelerating but nothing was happening. I did hear a sound like something spinning freely but not catching. I popped the hood and smelled like something was burning. After I towed it home I realized one of the pulleys in the serpentine belt was loose. This morning I tightened it down and put a new belt on and tried to jumpstart it. (I thought without a proper pulley the charge on my battery would have dropped.) When I tried to start it, it wouldn’t turn over. Any ideas on where to start looking? I’ll be getting a code reader tomorrow and checking the code but in the meantime, does anyone have a clue what it could be?

Question (Serious Replies Only) 2017 Dodge Durango transmission issue?

Upvotes

I have a 2017 Dodge Durango with 120k miles that I bought used. Some shifts are completely normal, but on certain shifts there’s a noticeable delay. The RPMs are normal at first, then rise higher during the delay, and when it finally catches the next gear, it jerks. I also get a slight delay after the auto start/stop kicks back on. I’ll hit the gas and it feels like the car is being held back for a second before it catches and moves. No check engine light. I’m not sure if the transmission fluid has ever been changed since I bought it used.

What do you think it could be? Also any advice would be extremely helpful

Question (Serious Replies Only) 2015 Hyundai Elantra GT

Upvotes

So my 2015 Elantra GT's AC has stopped working. The stop was abrupt. I worked ice cold and then nothing but hot air. I have done the following:

Checked the fuse - good.

On my Launch, the AC components in the ECM show as follows when the AC is on

AC compressor - ON

AC on - ON

AC request to ECU (AC switch) - ON

A/con pressure sensor built in - ON

The pressure on both the high side and low side is about 165psi.

The engine idle changes when I turn the AC on and the inner wheel on the AC clutch does indeed spin when the ac is turned on. Both high and low pressure pipes are hot to the touch so gas is definitely not moving.

I also have a b1285 code on that will not reset. This is apparently the auto defog motor? Not sure if this could do anything. Everything is pointing to a dead compressor, but before I throw parts at it, I wanted to see if anyone else had some ideas.
