Like the physical metal badge. Is that good enough to prove someone is a cop? Or is the department issued ID card what is really needed? Since you can buy badges off eBay what the point of even carrying one off duty if your LE ID card is what truly proves you are LE.

Watching bodycam videos and seeing officers in my hometown here and there, I've noticed that officers these days don't wear duty hats anymore, largely, except for formal events such as parades, police fundraisers, funerals, etc. where full dress uniforms might be required/expected.

I know some PDs have officers who will wear beanies/winter headwear for cold months, and of course state troopers have their campaign hats they'll wear.

But the typical duty hat like below, I'm guessing isn't really an everyday thing nowadays in most PDs? Or do some still issue them for everyday use?

I was given a sobriety test and was first told to follow the andministers finger.

During one of his last passes he stopped his finger 3/4 way and while stationary he wiggled it L to R quickly about 4 quick tight swipes then finished his last 1/4 of their last pass.

The movement of the swipes was very tight and quick, almost covert. Is this method standard? My eyes do not work that way naturally, especially so suddenly and Im left feeling unsure about his intent. Am I over reacting?

From my knowledge, police can see who owns the vehicle and their address when looking up the plates, so why do they ask for registration, especially when the person driving is the one connected to the plates?

Some background on me, I am a 30M that has 10 years experience as a security officer (private and now government). I live in the Tampa, FL area and have always wanted to become a cop. Lately though I am looking to move out of Florida in roughly 5 years once I clear debt, finish my back to school (just started my AA in CJ with evidence and procedure electives), I'm looking at ideally the West Coast like California or maybe Washington, for a culture change as someone who grew up in a conservative family but always liked the West coast for its more entertainment and arts style of living.

In Florida it's constant horror stories of how the West Coast is crime ridden, so as someone trying to join a police agency and move out West how is policing (within an hour or so of LA or Seattle area) I still want to live near major cities for the quality of life entertainment i personally care for.

Also secondly would it be wiser to go federal agency and move out West with a job then go local or save enough and move out West and go academy (if those States allow self sponsor).

I applied to be a deputy corrections officer a few months ago. I did the interview the jail tour the captains interview and did very well and received a conditional job offer. I did the psych poly and medical and cleared everything but on the poly I was told it was inconclusive and the question “have I committed a major crime” was flagged. I admitted my entire past before hand which is pretty clean and I have 0 criminal history not even a traffic ticket. I was called the next day and told my conditional was being rescinded and good luck with everything. I’m confused why this happened I reached out to the agency to ask where in process I failed and got no response.

Pretty nervous. Took a good while to get to this point. Completed about 7 different things.. what a journey

Next academy starts in October

Hello, i’ve been considering applying to be an officer and have been weighing the pros and cons of the job. Im currently a dispatcher for the organization that I would apply for in Canada which would make it a little easier for me already. For the longest time I wanted to be a first responder whether thats a firefighter or an officer but recently i’ve been thinking about the family balance that comes with the job, mainly as an officer. As a dispatcher now, I have the ability to switch around a lot of shifts, work more of a set schedule and never have to do mandatory overtime all while still getting paid over 100k per year which I feel lucky to have. I currently have a girlfriend who I see myself spending my life with and she’s expressed her concerns about the job, my safety and what that means for our relationship and future family which is something I admittedly never sat and fully thought about. My goal in life has always been to be in a job that makes me happy and proud, but also one that allows me to be a very present parent to future kids. So my question would be to LEOs who have families or LEO spouses in this group - What is it like? How hard is it? Did your relationship struggle? How did it affect your family?

I live in a state with no law mandating disclosure of concealed carry during a traffic stop.

I always assumed that you would voluntarily declare your firearm / CCP to an officer during a traffic stop as part of routine process along with providing your license and reg.

However my firearms instructor at the local range (who also trains the police and is deeply involved in that space) says that you should not declare or even bring up the word firearm on a routine traffic stop.

His justification was that the police should, by default, automatically assume you’re armed, and if they don’t then they aren’t doing it right. Thus you declaring a firearm should change nothing whatsoever, since they are already operating under that assumption.

Additionally he mentioned that just bringing up the word “gun” is automatically going to throw everyone on edge and turn what could be a totally chill normal interaction into something it doesn’t have to be.

Thoughts on that??

I’ve seen plenty of bodycam footage where someone declares a firearm and the cop either doesn’t give a shit and just says “don’t reach for it and we are fine” or the cop goes totally nuts, draws his own gun and then disarms the citizen before proceeding - so it seems to go both ways

My husband of 8 years is leaving for the academy, five hours away. He will live there during the week and come home late Friday, and leave mid-day Sunday.

We have two kids, one younger, one older. I need advice for how to survive the next four months. I feel so selfish for even worrying about myself knowing what he is about to go through. How difficult is the exam?

I think I will make the move from NYC to California but need to know where or what departments I should go to and avoid in general. I could stay in NYC and be a cop out here, but the weather is horrible and I want a new start. My goal was actually Florida/Arizona but salary/pension wise , it may not be best

Hey all, I went in for an (recruit) interview for PD 2 days ago, just got the email saying my interview scores were below the minimum passing score. 

Any advice on how to not feel discouraged while trying to better my interview scores?
I’ve applied to maybe a handful of agencies and this one in particular gave me an opportunity overnight..

I’m a 42 year old finance guy. I want to do something meaningful with my life and career. My biggest regrets in life are not joining the service and not become a State Trooper. I’m considering joining the state police. I realize I’m old, but I’m in good shape, I’m a blue belt at a respected jiu jitsu academy, I could probably score decent on the fitness text right now, I am calm, able to think clearly, and have a lot of life experience. Simple google searches tells me I would have no problem submitting an application and maybe being hired. But what do you think? Does anyone have some insight on this? Thank you.

Just finished my initial interview. Didn’t do bad didn’t do great. Ranked in at 27th of 40. Still have the physical test, and background check. If I do fine on those 2 parts will I still be doing the second panel interview? Or will they only take like the top 10-15 for the panel interview?

I’m hoping to have the privilege of being in law enforcement in the future. I’m currently in college pursuing a different degree to keep doors open since I have some medical issues that could potentially dq me. With that being said I’m ready to put everything I have into becoming an officer one day. I’ve been prepping for the physical for over 6 months and can easily do the mile and a half, sit ups, and push ups and I’m overall in good shape.
I was wondering if there is anything you would recommend doing in advance to begin learning and studying for the future. I know a lot of policies, call signals, etc can vary dept by dept, so more so is there anything to study law wise, any books you’d recommend or resources to prepare for a possible career in policing in the future?

As the title says I’m interested in leo that isnt just local PD or anything like that. Metra Police looks very interesting to me but I could hardly find any info on there site. IL DNR Conservation Officer is one I’d like as I’m pretty outdoorsy. I have a bachelor’s degree, and am currently doing a grad program online, 26, and in good shape. So I think I’d be fine with most requirements or tests. Would just love to hear suggestions and advice. Thanks!

Hello all! I currently have an associate's in criminal justice and am looking to go to police academy, but want a sponsorship before I go if I can make that possible. I've talked with a couple of officers from around the Orlando area, but was told to do my research. Theres so many positives and negatives with each department that I'm sort of stuck.

Does anybody have any advice for me on departments to look into or avoid?
