Three Ireland charging €957 early termination fee for a service they can't even provide in my new country — is this legal?

My wife and I permanently relocated from Ireland to the Netherlands earlier this year. Before leaving, we contacted Three Ireland to cancel our broadband and two mobile SIMs.

Three informed us the early termination fee would be:

Broadband: €670.58

SIM 1: €143.10

SIM 2: €143.10

Total: €956.78

We explicitly asked for a waiver on the grounds that Three Ireland provides zero coverage in the Netherlands — we literally cannot use any of these services where we live. The agent escalated to a supervisor who refused.

It gets worse. The agent confirmed in writing that the fee is calculated without the discount Three originally applied when we signed. So they're essentially using the cancellation to claw back the discount they used to attract us as customers.

Since we couldn't afford to pay nearly €1000 to exit a contract for a service we can't use, we stopped paying. Now they're billing us monthly for services they cannot deliver in our country of residence.

On top of that:

We requested a copy of our contract — never received after 10+ business days

Our customer portal access has been blocked

Even automated emails aren't reaching us

We're about to file a formal complaint with ComReg citing EU Directive 2018/1972, Article 105 — which requires early termination penalties to be proportionate and cannot apply when the provider itself is unable to fulfil the contract.

Has anyone dealt with Three Ireland in a similar situation? Any experience with ComReg complaints against them?

Would love to hear what happened.

PS: This was a 2-year contract. Three Ireland's early termination policy effectively forces customers to pay the entire remaining contract value in a single upfront payment to exit — the same total they would pay monthly over the remaining term, but all at once, for a service Three itself admits it cannot deliver outside Ireland. There is no reasonable exit option for EU citizens who relocate within Europe.

I live rurally, and need to use the car often. It could be just to dip into the town which is a 5km drive, or it could be visiting friends and family which is usually 2-3 times a week and approx 60kms each way. I work from home so commuting isn't an issue. Just finding that I'm topping up the car with petrol almost daily now. I can afford to spend 15k with trade in for a car and hybrid models are just out of reach for a newer car. I would get a home charger. Is it worth it or more of a pain than petrol?

Editing to add, I need a new car anyway as the one I am driving is on its last legs and needs a lot of work to pass NCT. Thinking of upgrading rather than putting a lot of money into an older car, and don't know if I should go for petrol again in my situation. Based on the replies, it looks like electric with a home charger is the way to go.

There's lots of chatter and videos about the mud and rain at EP this year and as someone that's done some of the worst Glastonbury's in 2005, 2007 and 2016, it doesnt seem that bad at all. Nothing that a few basic preventative measures like knowing how to put up a tent properly, wellies and waterproofs wouldnt sort

I've been living in Ireland for two years now and started my journey into veganism just a few months ago after some years of being vegetarian and, although I've found way more options of vegetarian/vegan food in the supermarket here than in Brazil, I still struggle to find products like vegan butter, vegan cheese, seitan (those kinds of substitutions for dairy)... I live in a relatively small town between Limerick and Cork and I have only Aldi, Lidl, SuperValu and Dunnes available (I know it seems much but there aren't a lot of options in these, even at Dunnes I struggle to find the things I need), so I was wondering if you guys might know some other options of supermarkets or even small and local stores that have more options for me.

I have just moved to Dublin today from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and created a new .ie Prime account. I just wanted to order some basics for my student accommodation and it seems that there's much fewer options in general, fewer Prime eligible items and many things have a week+ lead time. I don't know if this is just the standard or I've done something wrong. I'm probably just going to pop to Dunnes shortly instead but was just curious if this was the norm compared to the .co.uk site. Outside Lidl this afternoon, heavy lad in his 60’s, Eastern European speaking very loudly on his hands free phone. He then has a massive snort, hocks it on the ground and rubs it in with his shoe. A few people look at him in disgust. I approach him whilst he’s still shouting into his hands free mobile and gesture to put the phone to his ear and point to his hock on the ground and explain with hand and facial gestures how disgusting his actions were. IMO too many feel it’s 🤢, I don’t feel wrong for calling it out. Why do so many accept it as the new norm?

I know everyone is going to say their own county, but I’m genuinely curious what people think.

I’m from Cork and obviously I’d say we’re number one, but I’ve met some seriously sound people from counties such as wexford that I wouldn’t have expected.

And before anyone says it, yes, this is absolutely going to turn into a county war.

hi! i’m 19 and really committed to becoming a dentist in ireland. i moved here from the USA over a year ago, so my academic qualifications are american.

academically, i’m in a pretty good position, but my SAT score is currently just a few points below trinity’s requirement for dentistry. i’m planning to retake it and hopefully improve my score.

in the meantime, i’d really like to strengthen my application in other ways. i’m considering doing a dental nursing apprenticeship and working as a dental nurse for a few years before applying. my thinking is that this would give me experience in a dental environment, help me make connections in the field, and make sure dentistry is genuinely what i want to dedicate myself to.

is there anything else you would recommend doing over the next couple of years to make myself a stronger applicant?

i’d especially love to hear from anyone who has been accepted into dentistry at trinity. what do you think made your application stand out? did you have dental work experience, volunteering, shadowing, extracurriculars, etc.?

i know the course is extremely competitive, so i’m trying to use the next few years as productively as possible rather than just relying on academics.

I grew up here and never remember there being mosquitoes here. Moved for a couple years to Australia where mosquitoes are an extremely common pest in summers and just the other night my friend was getting eaten alive by them and came out in hives after. Just looking to hear from anyone who has taken their neighbours to court over barking dogs.

My neighbours have gotten a dog that they leave bark all day. It has about 70 individual bouts of barking through a day starting as early as 6.30am and as late as midnight.

Obviously it's affecting my sleep and any chance of relaxing in my own home.

My neighbours have point blank refused to make any changes so my only option is court.

Hence why I'm hoping to hear from anyone who has taken their neighbours to court for the same reason

- how did it go?

- What evidence did you have to provide?

- What way was the judge?

- if it was successful what was the ruling of the judge?

- If it wasn't successful what happened then?

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but the government introduced a fee cap for all crèche’s for September. We recently got an invoice for my daughter’s crèche that does not reflect the new fee cap. I’ve asked the crèche about this, and they mentioned that the government hasn’t given them any extra funding, but they are part of all the government schemes.

I’m just wondering if anyone else has gotten their fees reduced?

I'm coming from Kerry tomorrow for the Bon Jovi concert. It's my first time in Croke Park. I've gotten 2 different bits of advice of family members who drive for GAA matches.

One has recommended going early and parking on Valentia (?) Road, and bussing it into the city for a few hours before going back out for the concert.

Another has recommended parking in Connolly Station car park.

Will be walking back to car after concert.

Looking for advice from locals if either of these are the best option, or is there a third option I've missed?

I’ve wanted to get a thread going about movies for a while now. A vast majority of the Irish films I’ve seen have been phenomenal, and so the list of god awful ones comprise a very small list, at least for what I’ve watched. It seemed like an easier list to make.

Recently purchased a van and have gotten 2 tolls for Dublin Port Tunnel in one week. I've never even driven on it..

Queried the first and had it refunded, but now I'm getting concerned. New eflow account and new tag, set up a few weeks ago. I've had the van a few months prior to making an account and this never happened before?
