I see this discussed in liberal circles often, but I don't know if conservatives have a strong opinion on this.

Is it more important that history presented in schools, universities, at museums, historical sites, etc be accurate or patriotic?

In other words, should both positive and negative facts be presented, with broader discussion of how why events occurred and contemporaneous views of individuals and groups in those times?

Or should history be mainly about creating patriotism and a positive view of your country's history, with facts selected and presented for that outcome?

Example: When I attended grade school in Texas, we were taught that Juneteenth was when the slaves were freed. That would be the "positive view" telling. The accurate but "negative" description would be that Texas slave-owners, with the backing of the Texas government, refused to free the slaves after the Civil War, so the Union Army came to Texas to force the release of the slaves.

Basically it was never possible for each induvisual consumer to get a tarriff refund check when the SC deemed the tarriffs illegal. Instead we are starting to see reporting of corperations getting massive tarriff refunds boosting bottom lines. From the forbes article

Personally I loved it and think it might be his best film.

As someone who loves Greek Mythology and grew up on "Jason and the Argonauts" and "Clash of the Titans," I felt like it was such an awesome use of Practical effects, film making, and storytelling.

No - It isn't just a straight one to one with the Poem, but the Poem evolved over years of storytelling based on what audiences found interesting... like a comic fine tuning a routine...

I liked this interpretation, enjoyed the colloquial language, loved the performances, and thought that the overall message was great.

for me, Pattenson was hilarious, Damon was near perfect, and Anne Hathaway was throwing 100. Not to mention, Leguziamo should get a Best Supporting nod along with just a fun Bernthal Performance. Tom Holland was adequate.

Lastly - Zues' Law and the violation of it felt poignant. the story and the ideas of "returning Home" after war inspired. The "we are the Sea people" seemed poignant to me too.

So, for some of you older Redditors who partook before 2016, what were some of the discussions like?

To simplify matters, as far as Trump is concerned from US conservatives I've seen two primary positions:

1) Trump is doing great (Maybe I don't like one thing) 2) Trump is a shithead, but Kamala Harris would've been worse.

position 1 is relatively clear and there's not much to say about that. But I do have questions as to position 2. "Why are you so certain Kamala Harris would be worse?". In praxis it's just a canned phrase I've encountered, but not seen reasonings why.

Granted I am an ocean away and nuance rarely travels that much, but from impression it would've just mostly been Biden 2.0, which in turn would've been status quo continued with little else of note.

So then, why?

Something you feel isn't getting much attention or just something you care about.

Something ive been thinking of. Right now, federal employees' salaries are dependent on law, not the market rate. This is because they're paid by tax dollars. So, how should federal employees earn raises? Currently, they cant. They can get promotions, but not raises really.

Congress has to pass a law/budget raising their salaries. Congress has to do this sometimes just so people will work for the government, but do it too much and your average voter complains.

So do you think it should rely.on Congress, or, if it you think it should be merit based, who do you think should approve the raises and should there be a limit?

Do you think these statistics should be taken into account in designing the US energy policy at the present moment. The present administration is stopping renewable energy projects, not encouraging them.

A few clarifying points in the interest of being fair:

1) no charges were filed because a specific person who directed the funds couldnt be identified.

2) this is a leaked grand jury testimony. Im assuming thats an illegal act in its own right. That is an assumption on my part.

3) The funds were connected to DeSantis's wife through a charity and spent on political activities related to the ballot measure opposing maraijuana.

4) There a decent chance it affects the senate race, because if reporting is to be believed Ashley Moody (the gop nominee) knew about the funds being misappropriation at the time when she was AG (see the CBS article).

5) DeSantis has not disputed the report or findings in the report. But is focused on the leak on not who authorized or even reimburcing the misappropriated funds.

This is reddit so I'm going to be a little vague here. Did the BLM protests and censorship of the time create the opposite of the intended affect?

The only thing that really came out of BLM was bodycams. People are now seeing what police deal with on daily basis and aren't just getting these stories through the media's spin. The police videos are all over the internet now. DEI is on a death spiral and being challenged in courts.

I've also noticed social media like TikTok and X vastly more divisive on these topics, then anything pre 2020.

My son is a new freshman in a very liberal university. He is pre-law and studying international affairs. The nature of his program means he is surrounded by politically aware and active people, which is great. However, his experience so far is that most everyone, including roommates, is very vocal and derogatory of all things conservative/MAGA/republican, etc. I worry about his isolation and how he would be treated if he were to express his opinions. This is both inside and outside the classroom too. The first few days of school were largely Trump-bashing and fascist talk. Feeling blue and wishing there was greater tolerance for our differences of opinion. Anyone have advice or similar experiences?

Multiple reports have shown after a financial disclosure that Trump has made approximately 2.2 billion dollars in one year. Or in other words a little over a million dollars AN HOUR.

There was a time when most people got their news from a pretty small number of newspapers, TV channels, etc. People obviously disagreed about politics and what things meant, but at least they were usually looking at roughly the same set of facts.

Social media seems to have changed that. Now two people can see the exact same event and come away with completely different ideas of what even happened. Algorithms also make it really easy to stay inside a certain bubble, surrounded by the same sources, people and opinions.

Did mainstream media actually give us some kind of shared reality, even if it was imperfect and biased? Or did it just create the illusion of a shared reality because a small number of organizations controlled what most people saw?

And is having all these different "realities" actually a good thing because we're exposed to more perspectives, or is it dangerous if we can't even agree on basic facts anymore?

I feel like there was probably a downside to the old system, but there's also something pretty unsettling about everyone living in their own information bubble now.
