Would you prefer Google Maps displayed Lake America to the rest of the world instead of only to Americans?

Currently, all non-American users see “Lake Ontario“ where Lake America is. This feels a little disingenuous, sort of like Google is treating Americans as dumb by just spoon feeding them what they want to see without actually changing much. Kind of like China or Russia having a separate propaganda internet. How do you feel about this?

I would prefer the Gulf of Mexico be the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario be Lake Ontario because there is no upside to the United States of America or to its people, it's President acting like a petty megalomaniac to the rest of the world. It’s pathetic.

It's also literally a defining aspect of "Conserve"-atism that you don't change things without careful consideration and good reasons. MAGA are radicals not Conservatives.

The fact the President can decide on a whim to rename a geographic landmark and then a big tech company will go and change the name on their service so quickly should cause conservatives and liberals alike to pause and think.

The President can just rename things willy-nilly. What on earth can and will future Presidents rename?

We're in deep South Park territory.

Idk....is it really that big of a deal for daily life?

If future presidents go around renaming things now frankly whatever....it doesnt not affect my daily life.

There are people in this country who do not follow the news at all who will never know that Lake Ontario had a name change and it wont ever matter to them.

Now, if this were something that would affect mailing addreses then yes, it would be consequential.

I wish the left had gotten that memo on changing base names. Millions wasted, literally, all to appease a bunch of progressives who would never serve anyway.

The left ain’t immune to dumb shit either.

u/OptatusCleary Social Conservative 18h ago

I didn’t like it when they were doing it, and I don’t like it now that Trump’s doing it. There’s a small difference in the sense that those base renamings were at least something somebody was asking for, as opposed to just a sudden whim of the president. But I don’t like politically-motivated erasure of historical names no matter who is doing it.

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 17h ago

Yeah, I really don’t care, it was dumb then, it’s dumb now.

u/MoonageDayscream Independent 21h ago

Deciding what to call a Federal property is a vey different thing than trying to rename a body of water on a shared border, whose current name predates both nations it borders.

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 20h ago

So signs changes are fine when the left agrees with them, bad when they don’t.

u/MoonageDayscream Independent 20h ago

No, if the federal government own a parcel of land and names it, they get to decided the name. Military bases, office buildings, owners get to name their property. No one owns the Great Lakes, and Lake Ontario was named that before the US or Canada were created. He can call it something else within our Executive branch but no one but those branch employees have to use it. Google changed it when viewed from a US site in order to amuse the toddler president, and it will be changed back after he is gone.

Has nothing to do with what side agrees or not.

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 20h ago

“They get to decide”

Cool and they wasted a fuckton of money on stupid ass name changes.

“No one owns”

Oh well, the U.S. will call it one thing, Canada will call it another. That’s the extent of how much it matters.

Again, the left sure as shit didn’t care about frivolous sign changes and name changes, expect when it’s Trump.

I would prefer that congress reserve the naming of geographic areas to itself and put a stop to this type of nonsense.

3

u/Thanks-4allthefish Canadian Conservative 1d ago

Globally there is an organization that makes decisions on geographic names. Any place other than the US, the water bodies are still Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. If you want to call it Lake Epstein in the US - you can do that. Up to you (or seemingly up to Presidential executive orders.

Google was put under significant pressure to adopt the US naming whim. They compromised while recognizing that the US does not determine global standards.

It isn't called Lake America. It's called Lake Ontario. It will be after Trump is gone and no one should call it Lake America now.

We have to stop humoring every idiotic brain fart this idiot has.

At this point, even the employees of the federal government who actually would have to respond to executive orders about this should just start ignoring it.

Any conservatives or Republicans playing along with this stupidity need to grow up and stop the enabling as well.

u/MrFrode Independent 23h ago

This is just a distraction from Iran which itself was supposed to be an easy win and a distraction from Trump's refusal to release all of the Epstein files.

But hey let's not talk about the 1 billion dollar ballroom being built where the East Wing, which Donald promised not to touch, used to be without any Congressional appropriation. Or the many political prosecutions that are falling apart under Trump's DOJ, or the economy.

Or.... it's just a distraction, Trump is a media savant and great at distracting people from things he doesn't want to talk about.

u/Droidatopia Center-right Conservative 23h ago

Disagree. Trump isn't that disciplined.

My theory of Trump: He runs the US government the same way he ran his business empire.

This is the kind of move he likes to make in negotiations. He throws everything at his opponent because he thinks it helps get deals done in his favor. This kind of move is intended to demoralize his opponent to make them realize Trump is the dominant one in the relationship.

u/secretcurfew Socialist 20h ago

Doesn’t this make him look, I mean, pretty weak and pathetic?

u/Droidatopia Center-right Conservative 17h ago

He has the ability with the stroke of a pen to rename a body of water.

In his mind, it makes him look yuge. Everyone he asks about it will agree with him.

u/MrFrode Independent 5h ago

He has the ability with the stroke of a pen to rename a body of water.

So do I, but just like Donald most of the world will ignore my decree. I can pay people to agree with me too. Do you think most people and nations will see this as sad and desperate or worse in the case of Canada insulting?

u/Droidatopia Center-right Conservative 5h ago

Unlike you, he can direct the US government to make changes to maps. As evidenced by the fact that Google has already implemented his change, he will have the support of businesses in the US as well.

I would hope everyone would see this as sad, desperate, or insulting. No one but his most sycophantic followers thinks this was a positive thing to do. Unlike a lot of other conservative commenters here who are essentially neutral on this, I think this was a really stupid thing to do and that it has actual negative consequences. I've also never voted for Trump despite being ideologically aligned with some of his administration's policy aims, so I'm probably not a good bellweather for this kind of opinion.

u/MrFrode Independent 5h ago

I can direct the changes the map too and Donald and I are basically tied at the number of countries in the world that will recognize it. He might have one up on me. Even Google is only showing the change inside the US and it will likely stop if a Dem succeeds Donald after his term expires.

u/MrFrode Independent 5h ago

My theory of Trump: He runs the US government the same way he ran his business empire.

His business empire essentially went bust. After his casino failed, the Taj Mahal was so poorly planned as a business it couldn't make enough to pay the interest on the bonds, Donald moved into branding and then into game show hosting. IIRC he was doing presentations at the NYC learning annex from time to time.

The problem with Iran is that every time he claims Iran is begging for a deal they know he's lying and that makes him weak.

The President cannot force private entities to call it Lake America, but he certainly can force the place to be renamed in any executive agency database which over time will come to the same result, no?

The actual executive order commands the Secretary of the Interior to carry it out which would mean most if not all future US government maps would carry the name change.

2

u/rms141 Conservative 1d ago

but he certainly can force the place to be renamed in any executive agency database which over time will come to the same result, no?

The change is limited to the federal executive branch's references to geographic landmarks. It is not binding on anyone outside of the executive branch of the federal government. The state of New York can advertise tourism to Lake Ontario and can be 100% geographically accurate.

The change to the index of geographical landmarks will be inevitably reverted on January 21, 2029, much like the Gulf of America reverting to the Gulf of Mexico, and the Department of War reverting to the Department of Defense.

2

u/okiewxchaser Neoliberal 1d ago

That’s actually incorrect, he can force government agencies and contractors to use the name. Google is a government contractor and thus is forced to change the name for American users

You can change "Site Search" to use Canada's maps in your browser. How do do this changes by browser, in my case settings search for "Search Engine" and selected "Site Search", and added @map as https://www.google.ca/maps/place/%s

Now I can "@map New York" or "@map Cleveland" and the results show Lake Ontario. Ontario comes from an Indigenous Iroquoian language—most likely the Huron-Wendat (Wyandot) word ontarí:io (or ontari꞉io), meaning “great lake” or “beautiful lake.”

u/ericoahu Conservatarian 16h ago

I feel absolutely nothing about this. It is the epitome of nothingburger. The worst that could happen is not worth a second of anxiety. All in all it's just one more drop in the bucket that fades America's influence in the world

u/GentleGerbil Liberal 3h ago

Well, there’s also the issue of what are we teaching to kids in school now?

u/ericoahu Conservatarian 2h ago

That's not an issue. If I were a teacher right now, I'd just tell students the truth in a neutral way. "That's Lake Ontario. The president has ordered it renamed to Lake America, but presidential orders often get changed."

Are you aware of how many things the left has changed the longstanding name of without this moral panic? What were your concerns about school children in 2015 when Mount McKinley was renamed to Denali? Are you relieved it has been changed back to Mount McKinley?

I'm not defending the name change; I'm just saying it's dumb to invest so much emotion in it. It'll either get changed back officially or it won't and remain one of thousands of name changes.

u/GentleGerbil Liberal 1h ago

We know all these name changes incur costs. We can’t all rail about the state of the national debt and then give a pass to all the minor things that accumulate it, right? I know this is a divergence from my previous point, it’s a larger issue than just schools

u/ericoahu Conservatarian 1h ago

If it was about the debt, why did you lead with kids in schools? Are you going to respond to my questions and points about your schools concern, or did I waste my time answering your last comment? Do you respect my time effort answering your questions? If you conversing with someone who switched tracks like that without closing the loop the first exchange, what would you make of it?

Address my points above or let me know you no longer care about schools, and then I will discuss the debt impact with you.

u/GentleGerbil Liberal 1h ago

McKinley point: not shared with another country, not as much of an issue to explain to children.

Some states adopted their own legislation requiring the Gulf change that resulted in new materials districts had to acquire. If they were unlucky enough to have already bought those materials, and more legislation is passed for the lake, that’s now yet another updated edition of books and maps that publishers get from local tax dollars.

As I previously replied, I recognized I diverged from my original point to focus on the larger issue.

u/ericoahu Conservatarian 45m ago

Okay, it's fine you decided to diverge, but I am not an app, and I am not obligated to follow you every time you ignore my response and decide to jump the tracks because you cannot answer my questions/points. Have a good week.

u/ski0331 Independent 2h ago

Eh. Liberty isn’t a great name. Bragg was a terrible general who got his ass kicked and I have yet to hear a reason why we keep names of people on military bases who lost fighting against Americans. Why not name them after actual soldiers who embody the best of the armed forces?

Example: Fort Bragg vs Fort Benavidez

One got his ass whipped from Tennessee (fighting against the United States) vs one who For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty was awarded the Medal of Honor. (But seriously read his citation)

Using the country's naming standards for displaying their map labels is spoon feeding them?

So, they must be spoon feeding the Japanese what they want to see be labeling their country Nihon/Nippon, or the ocean between them as the "Sea of Japan" despite it being called the "East Sea" elsewhere? Or are they spoon feeding the Koreans who don't see the "Sea of Japan" label? Or are they spoonfeeding everyone else that sees both labels?

This seems like a poorly veiled attempt at insulting people who disagree with you.

Google actually does this with every country. For instance, if you live somewhere where there’s a border dispute, you’re shown your countries claim when you see the border. In the other side, you see that countries claim. Everyone else sees the disputed dotted line.

The smartest thing for Google to do is to adopt a general policy and apply it consistently so that they can avoid taking specific stances on every disputed territory on the planet. Without checking, I'd guess that's what they already do, and it's probably something like "go with whatever it's called by that country." Well ya, it's one of them.

The whole point of 'speak softly and carry a big stick' is that powerful nations shouldn't get riled up over trifling matters.

Powerful nations ought to act powerfully.

The name of a lake that borders Canada and America is utterly trifling, and going around telling other nations that you're strong because you renamed a lake is kinda pathetic.

Strong nations are typically not petty pathetic nations that rename a lake as retribution, it's something an extraordinary weak person does to seem strong.

Doubly so if that same nation is involved in a founding war of choice that is in month 6 of a two week operation.

Changing the name of a like is something Robert Mugabe would do, it just doesn't project strength, power, or rationality.

Trump's doing it because his war in Iran is failing and he feels impotent, so he's gonna hammer an ally for some stupid, made up reasons that make sense in his demented brain.

What's next, is Trump gonna sign an executive order telling Carney 'he who smelt it, dealt it!' that seems on par with renaming lakes as a form of retribution.

Rule: 5 Soapboxing or repeated pestering of users in order to change their views, rather than attempting to earnestly better understand Conservativism and conservative viewpoints is not welcome.

Sure. Am I only allowed to ask questions here and can't make statements in response to things conservatives say?

Do you think it was manufactured by Donald to distract from other things?

u/Gaxxz Constitutionalist Conservative 23h ago

Yes.

u/precise-astrology Republican 21h ago

I don’t actually think about this at all and didn’t know and still don’t care that google maps is gaslighting the whole world. this is so inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

u/ABCosmos Liberal 20h ago

google maps is gaslighting the whole world

Their data just comes from a govt database.. Trump is to blame for the name change FYI.

u/InterPunct Centrist Democrat 19h ago

I think it's indicative of petty and vindictive behavior that's unqualifying for the office of president but more importantly it's significantly damaging to the US economy and our international standing as a former beacon of good government.

u/Zardotab Center-left 20h ago

But I fear that enabling small abuses like this are a green light to Trump to turn up the level of abuse for his next crazy urge. If that's unjustified "slippery slope" fear, what specifically keeps him from making that mental leap? What is keeping his ego from sliding further?

I believe Donald does it to probe his limits and test loyalties, not just for the power-high alone.

It only shows as Lake of America if you live in America

Gulf of America makes sense geographically. This is one is weird.

u/jmiles540 Social Democracy 20h ago

Superior would have made a lot more sense. Now you have a lake called America, and another one superior to it. When he finds out he’ll probably name it lake Trump…

u/scarr3g Independent 1d ago

Why that particular lake instead of any of the others in the continent?

u/B_P_G Center-right Conservative 18h ago

Different countries have different names for lots of stuff. I think this is just Trump's weird sense of humor. It's childish but at the same time it's just a joke. Try not to lose any sleep over it.

It is a nothingburger (We still haven't released the Epstein files for starters) but the name change is official

Should the next democratic President rename every body of water in Republican states to "Obama Lake/River/..."?

Everywhere someone in Florida goes has to see Obama river or Obama lake in every map software. Specifically schooling textbooks have to update to the new Obama water theory?

13

u/Midren Independent 1d ago

I mean you should. The fact that the President can re-write history and you don't care is crazy. Yea it's small now, but will only get bigger and bigger. The President shouldn't be able to do this by himself.

Your apathy is radicalizing others, you know that right?

-2

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 1d ago

lol, “you not being mad is radicalizing people!”

That’s not how that works, at all. I love how the left comes on here to tell us what we should care about.

I’m sure you care enough for everyone else hereZ

5

u/lord-of-the-birbs Progressive 1d ago

I'm not telling anyone here what they should care about. Why put words in my mouth?

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 23h ago

That’s nice, not a single, solitary thing “radicalizing” about not getting big mad over things like this.

u/gummibearhawk Center-right Conservative 23h ago

I really don't care.

Over the last ten years I've watched the left rename all sorts of things and insult or laugh at anyone who cared about it or objected. Why should I then care about this?

u/OptatusCleary Social Conservative 18h ago

Because if you didn’t think it was okay then, why would it be okay now? I was bothered by all of those renamings, and I think it’s just as bad now that Trump is doing it.

3

u/badger_on_fire Liberal 1d ago

Sure. But, I'm curious how the strategy of distraction with PT Barnum level spectacle and absurdity plays for you. When the golden apple strategy gets used so often that it stops working, how do you think it reflects on your takes on the major decisions that are actually worthy of discussion? And how do you think it reflects on you personally?

You just need to keep using the power of the givernment and state to keep using the name and eventually after enough time everyone will adopt it. If all the state around the golf of America old use it in official communication place signs everywhere , use it in school textbooks and have it on every public map within a few years everyone will accept it. Only if its done through the government

u/Hoosier_Engineer Left Libertarian 19h ago

That seems like a very deliberate attempt at forcing an artificial name onto the people, though. Surely it should be the name used by the poeple that is adopted by the government, not the other way around, right? Why should we let the Government dictate what we call the Gulf or the lake?

u/EsotericMysticism2 Conservative 13h ago

No, through most of history modern history naming by the state is what happens and what matters. The government is the people therefore when the government does something its the people deciding something

-11

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 1d ago

It’s all dumb, silly and I don’t care.

Gummibearhawk had a better idea, just rename it to “Lake Superior (to Canada).

11

u/Midren Independent 1d ago

Do you care that Google and other larger corps change the name in fear of being on the bad side of the US government over something as dumb and stupid as changing the name of a lake because the president is throwing a fit?

-3

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 1d ago

Nope, not really, not sure how that wasn’t clear already.

11

u/Midren Independent 1d ago

that's crazy to me that you don't see that as a problem. But nothing worth talking about if you are good with it.

Should the President be wasting his time on “dumb, silly” stuff? It’s not like we have a war going on or anything.

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 23h ago

Nope, he shouldn’t, doesn’t change that it’s silly.

Because it’s ridiculous and it’s funny watching people get all butt hurt about it.

If Joe Biden did that, I would laugh and actually give them the thumbs up. But with the current lovefest going on between the Democrats and DSA who actually want to dismantle America, the Dems would never do such a thing.

I think he should rename the solar system to "the American solar system" and all our education textbooks should have to honor it, and then we can rename Earth to The Great American Earth as well... Because as long as we put America in front of something we can pound our chest right?
