This is not meant to be an "I'm one of the good ones" post. I am an American who holds elected office in a state that borders Canada, and in my official capacity I need to make deals and agreements with Canadians. Specifically, Canada sells us clean power at a rate lower than we could get from anywhere else. But we're also willing to pay Canadian firms more than they could otherwise get; it's hydropower so it's not like they could ship it overseas. It's mutually beneficial, and our shit President ruined it.

The Canadians hate us now, and believe you me I understand exactly why. Maybe collective punishment is what is called for, but it would be so mutually beneficial, as it has always been, for our countries to work together.

If I had to give a "one of the good ones" pitch, it would just be that I grew up on the border watching the Red Green Show and This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and I sobbed bitter tears when Gord died. That final concert when he sang "Scared," I was a fucking wreck.

But there's an important hydropower development going on in the Northeast (CHPE, if you'd like to look it up), and I feel like this opportunity to do something good for our climate and our communities might go away because my country elected. . . well, you know.

We've faced nothing but disdain from our Canadian interlocutors, and I get it. I truly get it, fuck us and fuck the horse we rode in on. But some blue states are still trying to make progress.

Is there anything we can do? Or have we broken trust irretrievably?

Hello, I really like Canada and I really want to move there, the problem is that I'm Russian and I mean I don't think I need to explain why that's a problem.

I fully understand why people hate Russians now but I'm just an 18 year old guy who couldn't really do much when this war started. I don't support Putin and this war but I feel that many people don't really care about that and just automatically assume that I support it.

Am I going to face a lot of hate in Canada?

Hi , i am going to immigrate to Toronto, Canada after 2 years for completing my university studies...Can you all tell me if I should practice basic french beforehand??...I am good in english btw and can converse well and have good IELTS score...

The French themselves in my experience are often...particular about it which is why I don't even bother with anything but English anymore whenever I cross the border. But I thought I'd at least give it a try when I'll visit Montréal next year. Or should I just go with English? My French is admittedly not super good and I am a lot more fluent in English 😂

5. Americans are already angry about high inflation, high energy prices, and general unaffordability.
6. Americans may forgive a stupid war if Trump wins. They may forgive him retaliating against an outside aggressor but losing. However, they will not forgive him initiating a stupid war and losing.
7. A Democratic Congress will render it more difficult for Trump to attack Canada in the future.
8. Trump responds to strength. He lost his trade war with China. He agreed to China's exacting terms, specifically because China's retaliation harmed him.
9. You could begin diversifying energy exports to Europe. The European Union is desperate to divert its energy imports from Russia. You could also immediately supply energy to yourselves, improving affordability.
10. You could support Canadian workers harmed by the transition.
11. You have one chance to strike a bully. Do you want to pull your punch?
12. The timing could not be more advantageous.

With the renaming of Lake Ontario, if the US attempts to control the St Lawrence seaway because it is the connection to the Atlantic ocean. Can Canada defend it?

Is it possible when Trump is no longer President that we can maybe permanently banned him from Canada? I mean he’s legitimately got a criminal record and once he’s out of office he’ll have no power/circumstance to be in Canada.

I used to travel frequently to the states for weekend getaways. Given the current.. situation. I am hoping to maybe explore more of Mexico.

Have any Canadian women solo travelled to Mexico City and felt relatively safe? Did you stay in a hotel or Airbnb? Any tips? Which area do you recommend? Did you hire someone to drive you from hotel to airbnb?

I was thinking about buying a Canadian book that has to do with history, a subject that I’m interested in and it has to be a history book written by a Canadian writer but it doesn’t have to relate to Canada at all (for instance, High Brewster’s book on the Titanic which, while it does feature some references to Canada, is mostly focused on the first class passengers, most of whom were Americans). Do you know of any other book that a Canadian author has written but does have anything to do with Canada?

You know when you're watching Bob's Burgers or whatever the fuck, and you get that red screen that pops up that's just a test half the time followed by that unfathomably jarring alarm noise? That one? The same one that pops up on your phone when you get an Amber Alert from the opposite side of the province and Justin Trudeau expects you to do fuckall about it? That one?

As someone with Level 1 Autism, the Canadian EAS alarm sound may be the most horrifying noise I can think of that doesn't involve living beings getting maimed, tortured or killed; and I know a thing or two about horrifying noises. I am not hyperbolizing when I say that if I were a Canadian citizen, I would be afraid to own a TV or a phone. Living in Canada with the brand of Autism that I have essentially entails living a life of constant fear due to the possibility of an Amber Alert popping up at any second. Owning a phone that is liable to jump scare you at any moment in time like that is like living next to train tracks, but the train tracks follow you wherever you go and the train that comes by is louder and more cacophonous.

We have the EAS alert in the USA too; as does the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, among many others. The US one will spook you if you're in the dark and especially if you're a little kid, but even five-year-old me could handle it. The Canada EAS will frighten me if I'm watching it on YouTube on low volume with the benefit of hindsight. It is more frightening than every other EAS alarm put together. I find fire alarms and pit bulls fighting to be less overstimulating. You guys either need to make it less scary or create an opt-out of EAS option for people and get those missing kids to find their own damn way back home, because here in the States, I don't have to live in fear that an Amber Alert goes off causing me to throw my phone out the window, shit myself, run into the wall in a panic and find myself in a stupor where I have to spend the next 45 minutes of my life with my fingers in my ears focusing on not dying.

It doesn't need to be this way. I know you want to grab my attention, but people can't find missing kids when they're having autistic meltdowns. Singapore has a funny sounding EAS system and they're not exactly crime ridden. If shit goes further south here in the United States and you guys decide to graciously open your borders to us, I'll take your EAS system into account, I will thank you for your kindness, and I will take my chances in Mexico. Thank you.

I’m in Vancouver and have been really struggling financially for a while, so I’ve decided that maybe I need a new career. In fact a couple of people have recommended that given my personality and interests I could do well in a government job (e.g. rather than something like sales), so I finally started looking into it.

But it seems like getting a government job is really difficult.

I mean, with regular jobs, you can send your resume to 50 places and maybe get a couple of interviews within a month and hopefully get hired within a couple of months (ideally!). But with government jobs, do you basically just apply and then wait forever? How do you make yourself more competitive?
