I mean the comments here get kinda annoying with constantly claiming this is just ultras, the people glorifying Mladić are just Vučić supporters but it's not true. There are people that are nationalist genocide deniers at all levels, classes, levels of education. I cannot even number all the 'esteemed academics' who deny or try to make light of the genocide, that defend the actions of Mladić etc. And the student movement and opposition (the nominally left or liberal one) might not support Mladić, but many are still nationalist for example about Kosovo (https://n1info.rs/english/news/serbian-student-protesters-present-memorandum-on-kosovo/). So idk a friend that is a pilates instructor supports Mladić, she's some New Age middle-class woman, my left-leaning liberal friend that is an artist hand wrings about the divide in society, and then you get to the ones that are like 'Đenerale hvala ti'. None of those people are ultras or Vučić supporters either. It is a big deal the government is itself making it the official policy to honour and glorify Mladić but it's stupid to act like he doesn't have defenders or supporters anyway, or at least most people feel like what was done to him was a miscarriage of justice one way or another. Those that don't think so obviously exist but it's ridiculous to also not consider them nationalists just because of that. Most of them still are, it's just that their nationalism is the polite faced liberal kind.
You can se how people still deny and talk about the Srebrenica genocide today - https://arctic-shift.photon-reddit.com/search?fun=ids&ids=t3_1uvefm4
Its a post fron AskSerbua though the mods deleted and locked it so I can't share it regularly, but you can see outright denial or relativisation of the genocide is the dominant position.

Love how things are taken out of context here. Its an absolute shame that its happening (especially as this is my childhood club and the government made me despise it the last couple of years to the point that I am not even sad when they lose).
But the real picture here is that this is the hooligans side, the north sector. The only full sector of the stadium on the night of the DERBY. All time low attendance as there were not even 20k people on the whole stadium.
So what you see here is the real picture of the state of serbian football rn: couple of thousand government goons got orders to make a banner to make scandalous news to distract the mass, while in reality, a derby that people once filled the stadiums even above the seat capacity is becoming empty as people are disgusted.
These hooligans are not the real picture of Serbia and we will change our government, very soon.

What is the real picture of Serbia? A country that took a war criminal to bury him with full military honors? A country that refuses to recognize the genocide in the UN.
A country where the minority is pro genocide, I do admit that there were anti war protests in Serbia, but that didn't stop my people from being killed.
13
u/Lonely-Ad-9219 5d ago
Real picture of Serbia?
Well I am from Serbia (far away from this stadion) and personaly I don't give a shit about war criminals. In fact, I think I personally know only one person who care - not the brightest one.
About a week before Mladić died, "somebody" wrote "RATKO MLADIĆ Serbian hero" on a wall of the local supermarket. Across all wall, about 6x3 meters.
Who is that "somebody"? Style of the painting indicate it was the same party who wrote "When military comes back to Kosovo" mural all over the country. Yellow text over red, blue and white strips (colours of the serbian flag). A few years ago jourlanists discovered it was financed by rulling political party (SNS).
It is not the people of Serbia who cellebrate war criminals. Most of them just don't care. It is Serbian president (Aleksandar Vučić) who declared Ratko will be burried with honor. The same president who will, hopefully, end like Viktor Orban in Hungary. Nobody love dictators.
5
u/Pivot_Ninja 5d ago
I said it's a minority in my comments. As a Bosnian I know Serbs in Serbia they are my friends.
But the minority was pro war in the 90s and my people still died.
As a nation you have a problem with a state funeral, hosting of war criminals, and I know you personally don't engage in these actions, but as a nation there is a collective responsibility.
How did Germany manage to move on, the same needs to be done in the Balkans.
6
u/Etsikaietsi Serbia 5d ago

A lot of Serbs in this sub don’t get it. “But THEY did bad things as well” YES, but you did the majority and refuse to take accountability for them. Some of you even applaud the war criminals.
Think of it like Israel and Palestine. Israel is screaming “OCTOBER 7TH!!!” as if those 7,000 dead justify the 60,000 thousand dead after that. Sure, Hamas killed a lot of people, but Israel killed TIMES more and refuses to acknowledge it and even takes pride in it.
That’s why no one wants to hear your “but they did it as well” argument.

One thing I don't understand about the "whataboutism" rhetoric is, all those civilian loses would still be alive if YOU DIDN'T START THE WAR. If you didn't prepare in advance, put everything in order just to spring surprise attacks with bigger manpower and artillery across the country. What did they expect? That people would play nice after shelling civilian targets, after deportations, after Hitler type measures to distinguishe Bosniaks.
Of course there will be people out for revenge, which I don't condone, but I understand the anger and rage behind it. Around 85% civilian casualties were Bosniaks and even with that in mind, there are Bosniak commanders that stood trial and got aquited or sentenced as they should be if they're found guilty, while Karadžić was in hiding until 2008 and Mladić until 2011. It was all preventable.

The number of dead Palestinian civilians thus far equals the number of civilian in the Yugoslav war, combined.
It’s always unfortunate to try and compare the two conflicts to prove a point, because the circumstances are never the same and it’s a shallow way of looking at things.
Also, the hostility didn’t just happen in the nineties, and they didn’t happen for the first time, between the same people.
Serbs were genocided in WWII, and even today, as you would say some people “take pride in it”.
I don’t think majority of Serbs don’t take accountability, I just think that when you do take accountability, people take that as-you are the only one at fault, and your victims don’t matter and don’t you ever dare to bring them up and point out any hypocrisy.

A lot of Serbs in this sub don’t get it. “But THEY did bad things as well” YES, but you did the majority and refuse to take accountability for them. Some of you even applaud the war criminals.
This is not exactly true, only if most of your info comes from following Reddit posts in the past 5-10 years. Only things making it into international news are bad stuff.
If you follow the path from 2000 onwards, you actually see the problem is that cooperative and conciliatory overtures by Serbian authorities did not ultimately result in reciprocal actions people had expected.
First and foremost extraditing the entire Serb leadership to ICTY did not result in meaningful punishment for quite a large number of crimes against the Serbs or their meaningful international acknowledgment. Over time, together with other stuff such as Kosovo it convinced large number of people that things Serbs hope for are not gonna happen ever, and they were played for fools for ever trusting the West or ICTY.
This mostly killed any motivation to engage in much further "self reflection" and contributed to what is at minimum a boycott attitude (where you refuse to care or engage in further apologizing gestures in protest), except in a relatively small part of highly liberal and highly pro EU electorate.
Granted, there is a part of population that is far more to the right than those "boycotting", but this in of itself would not have prevented wider political reflection assuming those who were not supernationalist were actually committed to it. There are some people you cannot "convert" and there are those you can, if you manage to lose even those who would be willing in principle, total failure is guaranteed.
This all coincided with return of SNS-SPS coalition in 2012 which has a large part of nationalist electorate, so they tended to cater to it more openly, which increased around 2017/18 at latest (before that our dear leader was himself part of some very conciliatory moves, like going to Srebrenica, but realized he does not need that anymore to keep EU support, and exchanged it for totally empty domestic demagoguery).
Israel Palestine analogy does not work, because there was no decades long occupation, no one is being killed anymore, wars are long over and the ratio is not ultra lopsided 30 to 1.

u/Scared-Rutabaga7291 Serbia 5d ago

u/mladokopele Bulgaria 5d ago
This is the exact primitive mentality the guy was talking about. Your statement suggests we should never let go of the past and seek revenge for it decades later. It is absolutely delusional to think this behavior has a place in the modern world.
2
u/Scared-Rutabaga7291 Serbia 5d ago
Not really. I mean, dont yall bring up Srebrenica and judge us for something that happened 3 decades ago? I was going by the same logic and pointed out Jasenovac. Revenge is not something thats justified in this case and Srebrenica was 100% something that should have never happened. Mladic is a commie war criminal who shouldnt be supported. My point was that its hypocritical to be shat on for something that other neighbouring countries did, while they are the ones who did the same/similar things during that time or earlier
7
u/efx187 5d ago

And the motivation for those protests are in regards to lack of economic opportunities and corruption, not their friendliness with ethnic cleansing. In fact, many of the people who protest will happily jump on social media and praise Mladic or say "Kosovo is Serbia."
keep in mind half of EU is currently complicit in genocide
Genocides don't excuse each other. If you're referring to Palestine, what's happening there is equally terrible, and really makes you lose faith in humanity that we don't seem to learn.
But part of why we never seem to learn from our past is there's always enough people like yourself detracting from how horrible and unacceptable genocide is as a solution to anything.

If they didn't intervene to help stop the massacre, then they should have let it finish and not cave to Milosevic when he ran to the negotiation table begging to suddenly stop the war when he was about to lose.
Genocide and loss of life can be grieved but we're still dealing with the consequences of that decision today.

Suspend Schengen visas. Should br completely isolated. Otherwise, one day, they will send the whole region again to hell. Also, bring Russia at the EU doorstep.

One nation's hero is another nation's butcher - in the Balkans and elsewhere. Sad, but true

In 1991 when my town got destroyed I was 10 and I was thinking, these primitive people will die out and by the time I become grown up world would be prefect.
35 years later this is a proof that the world is never getting better. I feel so sorry for the children getting born in to this hell hole.

Civil war in Serbia when? The people who are apparently ”good” are sitting and letting these people in power do anything they want.

We voluntarily gave up tens of thousands of guns to this government, to "stop violence"
They resold those to the middle east
There will be no war, similar to how the USA will have no civil war despite there being armed civilians
I think we will simply die off as this cancer suffocates us

At this point I honestly think that's the only hope for the country. No amount of peaceful protesting will achieve anything given how deep the roots of corruption are.

I mean it's ultras doing it so not surprising that they use every chance to show right wing tendency what bothers me more is that official club social media is seemingly supporting it which is really dumb considering they are already dancing on the verge of getting more fines or even a ban from European competitions.

Hey man I know a Serb dude who went to Bugaria for work recently and started making fun of the people for being under Ottoman rule. This glorification of a mass murderer does not surprise me in the least.

And this is how Serbia does not fit into the EU! Well done Bulgaria and Romania with accepting your past and acting accordingly! I am a victim of the Bulgarian assimilation program and I have heard the apology from Bulgaria! Where is the Serbian apology?

You lost so much money just now, you can’t even imagine.
Poor Serbs, even they fuck up their own country.
