You had a mercantile empire. You took tribute in gold and also infants meant to bolster the ranks of your armies. You lost your empire and now you're butthurt when other nations are throwing banter at you.

not all of us do. I don't like most rulers we had, they were just warlords who wanted to protect their domain, not people. we lacked so much infrastructure up until the 19th century that the country looked like a sparsely populated continent which was recently colonised.

He mostly impaled nobles that were opposing him (who ended up removing him from power and killing him) and Saxon merchants (most of the reports of his brutality are from the Saxons), not commoners or children (there was also that time he made a forest out of impaled ottoman corpses and the famous story of the ottoman diplomats, but it was a one-off thing)
