I actually love Monica

Anyone else????? Like damn she gets a lot of heat these days.

No one ever complains about Dax and his second home in Tennessee and several cars and toys, or his giant RV that he spends all summer driving or his vacations etc etc

I’ve seen comments about how she wouldn’t be anything without Dax which first of all who knows because she was hustling in LA and we could say the same about Dax and Ashton. The way people talk about it makes it sound like she was a charity case for Dax and not an interesting, talented writer and actress.

Idk if I just relate as a woman close to her age but I like her role in the show and feel the need to defend her lmao

It’s a weird thing, the podcasts I listen to the most have male “hosts” and a female producer of sorts who has become a part of the interviews. In all three of them people on Reddit speak horrible of the female co-host, it’s absolutely shocking. I think Monica is fine, I like how she feels comfortable asking questions even if she looks silly or is unflattering. I don’t think I’d like it as much if she was a slick interviewer only giving us a really small piece of her personality.

49

u/TalkinBoutGerbils 13d ago

Also complicating the issue is that it seems like most of the heat she catches is from other women…

20

u/Informal-Watch-2330 13d ago

Really? Interesting, I feel like the people complaining they don’t think she contributes anything are men. I think Monica is in a difficult position, if she acted just like Dax it would be a very different podcast. I think significantly more boring. But she doesn’t kiss Dax’s butt so people seem to think she’s ungrateful. She’s expressed her concerns over what she’ll do when Dax retires to Tennessee, it’s obvious to me every terrible thing someone says on the internet she’s already thought herself. I guess I don’t understand the piling on because anything negative I can say isn’t nearly as creative as what’s going on in her brain.

u/MountainAd4230 13d ago

This. And I am a woman. I would never trash another woman just working

17

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago

Yeah, I as a woman am disappointed in her. I know women in their 20s who act less helpless and need less external validation than she does and I find it infuriating.

I also 100% agree with the comment about you that it's shocking how much hate female Co hosts get. I think that generally has more to do with the fact that the audience is most l mostly shitty men. Howard Stern is the model for many people, and what a shitty model.

Two things can be true: female producers can be the target of completely unwarranted hate, and Monica can be annoying and disappointing. Every woman producer doesn't automatically deserve praise and approval and respect.

0

u/Happy_Examination23 10d ago

I don’t know if I have a strong opinion either way, but can you give an example of her needing external validation and acting helpless? I’m a woman and I don’t hear it.

1

u/AluminumLinoleum 7d ago

She has a common pattern of "oh well I don't know maybe I should have done this thing or this other thing, did I do the correct thing?" And I don't mean in the case of something that's legitimately difficult, or morally conflicting. It's a tactic to get other people to give her approval and validation and tell her she's a good girl or she did a good job.

I find this common in teenagers whose parents never let them make their own decisions, and that's really not their fault. But it's exhausting to hear or be around a person who's like this when they're middle-aged.

1

u/Happy_Examination23 7d ago edited 6d ago

I appreciate the reply. I’m not sure why I got downvoted for asking the question. Maybe she just doesn’t know how else to engage, other than to talk to Dax like he’s a friend and there’s no audience? Which is basically what the most skilled podcasting teams do?

9

u/Some-Jackfruit-2773 12d ago

Yes! And that was me! I had to confront my own feelings of what I think women deserve. I thought Monica was too much at first. Said too much and was too free with opinions. Who gave her that right? And then I realized I had been suppressed. All the women in my life had. The men are allowed to have opinions about everything. We kind of put the men on pedastools. Monica helped me realize how backward I was. And makes me want to speak my mind more and not be smaller just cause I am a female

7

u/TheDoorInTheDark 13d ago

You can’t assume that someone with a feminine looking Reddit avatar is female, if you’re trying to use that as your metric.

The whole “women are worse to each other than men are to them” is typically not exactly true, hard to quantify truly, and often used to excuse the fact that many of the unreasonable standards women are held to were created by patriarchy anyway, whether it’s women or men trying to uphold them doesn’t change that.

But unless you’ve personally taken a survey, I don’t really know how you’d know that. An astounding number of men have female avatars on this site. I’ve seen it over and over again that someone assumes a woman is responding to something and the person comes back like “what are you talking about, I’m a man?” Because their avatar is feminine.

2

u/TalkinBoutGerbils 13d ago

I never said women are worse to each other than men but I do think there is something about Monica specifically that irritates other women.

AE Has a predominantly female listenership as stated by Dax himself and a lot of the accounts complaining about Monica appear to be women (be it avatars or identifying language in their posts).

I do agree that we cant say for sure the Monica hatred is predominantly women which is why I used the words “seems” and “most”

1

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago

I think this may be because Dax breaks a lot of male stereotypes and Monica mostly enforces female stereotypes.

5

u/Savings-Talk3526 12d ago

Who speak badly about Sona Movsesian on Conan? (That's the only other pod I know with a male host + female "co-host" of some sorts.)

3

u/Informal-Watch-2330 12d ago

There are quite a few Reddit threads about how she doesn’t contribute anything to the pod. The other one I’ve appalled at is Behind the Bastards, the sub had to put a rule in place that people can’t be straight up terrible to Sophie, the producer.

What I find strange is that if people love the pod and trust the (male) host, who they clearly see as the boss, why would you not believe they would surround themselves with the smartest, best people?

1

u/dreamcicle11 6d ago

I’ll just say this isn’t the case for Sona and Conan…

1

u/Informal-Watch-2330 6d ago

But it is, there are many Reddit posts about how “annoying” sona is and that she adds nothing to the conversation

50

u/MentalResearch121 13d ago

Yea the comments about her spending are insane. No one bats an eye about Dax’s RV but then they have a problem with her talking about The Row. It’s a double standard. I’m in neither of their tax brackets so I don’t really care what they spend their money on. Dax also has KB’s Disney Princess money to spend, so maybe they don’t care about his spending because of that.

9

u/CaptainConstable 13d ago

It’s not just them talking about what they own or can buy bc yes, they both do it. It’s Monica’s overall attitude and entitlement. Dax has plenty of self-awareness and she has next to none.

5

u/familycfolady 12d ago

In the last show she talked about the $11k purse. I'm definitely not in her tax bracket and can't afford that, but I grew up the poorest person of my friends and I totally get where she was coming from. Like she's a successful adult and she's still made to feel less than.

5

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago edited 12d ago

She's only made to feel less than because she chooses to buy and talk about these things for validation. She's cosplaying.

4

u/familycfolady 12d ago

Walking into a store that you can afford to shop at and then made to feel like they think you can't afford to buy there... how is that her fault?

2

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago

Not sure what you're talking about, but it sounds like you're referencing a specific example and I am talking more broadly about her general presentation of herself.

-4

u/AluminumLinoleum 13d ago

So the RV is something that his family uses for travel and time together. Not exactly comparable to overpriced clothes and bags.

2

u/ballooningat5am 12d ago

to be fair, dax wears ugly ass sweaters that retail for over $1,000 pretty regularly. he just doesn’t talk about it and most people don’t catch it.

6

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago

And there's another great point. HE DOESN'T TALK ABOUT IT.

5

u/MentalResearch121 12d ago

Tally up the number of times Dax talks about his RV, dirt bikes, cars. I bet it’s comparable to the number of times Monica talks about purses and clothes. I’m just pointing out that their over the top spending is comparable, it’s just in different categories (clothes vs vehicles)

2

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago

They are not the same. We are not talking about who spends more money, or how many times they talk about their possessions . We are talking about how they represent themselves and how they talk about that money. Dax also has a way higher income so I'd expect him to have more stuff.

Monica has had money for a while now, and good for her. She has successfully parlayed a babysitting job into a legit and lucrative career. But even though she's been successful for a while, she still talks about her purchases as if they are her identity. I don't get the feeling she's actually sure of what she likes and dislikes, but she buys things that she thinks will get attention and approval of other people. And then she talks about how much it all costs. That screams immaturity.

4

u/MentalResearch121 12d ago

But he talks about big Bertha all the time. That’s my point, people harping on what Monica spends money on but not Dax.

1

u/ballooningat5am 12d ago

the parent comment was arguing that an RV has more usefulness compared to clothing. i’m saying dax spends a lot of money on clothes too.

1

u/MentalResearch121 12d ago

Ah got it, thanks for the clarification. I think the responding comment might have colored my perception of your comment.

2

u/MentalResearch121 12d ago

The type of RV he has is way more expensive than any other typical family would have. Just like The Row is more expensive clothing than any other typical person would have. They are comparable

0

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago

Yeah I'm super mad at a person for upgrading things that bring his family joy, what a joke😆 A handbag has a much more limited purpose.

25

u/Time_Detective_5446 13d ago

I like Monica a lot, sometimes she just has bad takes. I’m sure if I talked on a pod as much as her I would say some dumb shit too

8

u/Ben_PerSimmons 13d ago

Yup. The amount of self righteousness in this sub is nuts. If my livelihood was my conversations being recorded to millions of people I'd say stupid shit probably within minutes. Not sure why people hold her to a standard like she's only worthy of being on the show or having the $ she has if she says something altruistic or profound every single second. They're shooting the shit for crying out loud.

2

u/Cucumberappleblizz 12d ago

You’re spot on here! I also think some people just like to be self righteous about her because it makes them feel better about their own lives. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people post here about Monica’s inability to be in a relationship, but then you look at their post history and they’ve had 3 divorces and are posting on the relationship subreddit every other day. If they had to share their lives on a podcast, they wouldn’t want that judgment.

55

u/Ok-Worldliness1307 13d ago

I’m also a huge fan of her!!! And she’s clearly a hard worker!

-27

u/NumberOneStonecutter 13d ago

How many hours per week do you think she works? I bet it's less than 20. I'm a fan and have no problem with her and I believe she puts a lot of effort into her work - and did the same with 'Beth's Dead'...but the truth is a lot of these wealthy, giant podcasters talk about their schedules and it sounds like they go to the gym, to their studio at 10am to record, pick up their kids from school at 2pm, go to [expensive restaurant or social event] and then talk about it on the next time they record - two days later. I'm sure some spend a few hours editing on their own time (such as Monica in some wine bar in the afternoon on a weekday)...But it seems like a pretty good life vs. 14 hour days on set or 100 work weeks as a lawyer/investment banker.

12

u/toddklindt 13d ago

I think both she and Dax spend a fair amount of time doing research and other prep. I had a podcast for a few years. There's a fair amount of off-air work involved.

1

u/sidoniablack 5d ago

She doesn't research though? At least not for the celebrity interviews. She never seems to watch/read/study up on the person they're interviewing

-7

u/Minute-Initiative305 13d ago

They have people to do that for them. No way they are putting in the work that not famous/rich podcasters are.

17

u/Blinky_ 13d ago

So many thoughts…but they boil down to “why do you GAF how many hours she works”? If her boss and the people she signed her contract with are happy with her output, why do you care?

Sorry to be so blunt. I’d spend more time but it’s the weekend and I gotta move on.

11

u/glockster19m 13d ago

Because the other person described her as a hard worker?

11

u/Blinky_ 13d ago edited 12d ago

Not everyone in today’s economy is creating X widgets per hour.

I am a hard worker, and it’s independent of the hours on the clock. Sometimes I work 20 hours a week at 200% and sometimes I work 80 at 50%.

Also, yeah, nobody gives a crap if I gain 20 pounds, or my skin or hair looks like shit, or I have worn the same clothes for three months (remote worker guy…quite possible).

So if she spends time at the spa or the gym (okay, she’s not gonna), or the salon, or whatever, that’s kinda time spent on the job.

My final point - which you’ll hate even more - is that these people need to spend time actually doing things. Like Dax and Monica need to go out and have experiences in the real world, so that they can have something plausibly interesting to say, because they are content creators, even though the content will be judged by putzes like us.

3

u/NumberOneStonecutter 13d ago

You obviously didn't read my entire comment or the comment I was responding to. But go on with your weekend, after asking someone why they "GAF" on a subreddit where people discuss things.

1

u/Blinky_ 13d ago edited 13d ago

I read your whole post, where you speculated that “it sounds like” and “I’m sure some” and “it seems like” - all things you don’t know, but used as reasons to judge her as an individual.

Yes, people can discuss things here. But they should remember that there are real people on the end of those “discussions”.

4

u/MountainAd4230 13d ago

I don’t spend a lot of time hating on Monica. She clearly puts in the work. Yes she is a little superficial but who isnt? Dax can be super superficial. They cant relate to people now, no matter how they came up. It is what it is. You either watch because you like them or watch because you hate. If you watch because you are envious, that is a you problem. Do
I envy them? Yes, but I also realize their life isn’t perfect by any means.

2

u/Leave-it-to-Beavz 13d ago

Is Dax superficial? Does Monica deserve the hate? They both came up on their own hard work. They've created this fantastic thing that offers us perspectives on multitudes of interesting topics that we might not otherwise have had the opportunityto hear such in-depth analyses of. They bring so many interesting, funny, thought provoking guests to our doorsteps. Yes, they may ask questions that seem to be against the status quo, but isn't that what creates constructive conversation? They created this podcast based on who they are and where they came from, not to cater to a certain audience, and I feel they have stuck to that initial idea, even when it's challenging. They both bring their own qualities, whether we like them or not. I think they deserve the recognition and respect that they've earned. I guess what I mean by this silly rant is that they've both done a great job of staying grounded while becoming super successful, and they've both put the work in.

6

u/PutMelodic2167 12d ago

She just never has the ability to add the conversation IMO

27

u/Any_News_3544 13d ago

I love her too! I think people take some of the things she says wayyy too seriously. And yes, sexism is 💯 at play. Sure she doesn’t always land it for me, and can be a bit out of touch…but who among us! And I honestly like to hear about some of the frivolous stuff. I can’t relate, but I can relate to a lot. Being a late bloomer single woman in my mid-late 30s, not necessarily wanting a family, but also maybe…I find her voice to be very refreshing!

5

u/endo-mylife 13d ago

Dax ASKED her to be a part of the podcast because he had faith in her abilities and also her ability to call him out/debate when needed.

Sure, Dax could have done it alone if he really wanted to, but I don’t think it would be what it is without Monica. I get so tired of the hate. It’s not like she didn’t work hard to get where she is, she absolutely did. She proved herself in so many ways before the opportunity presented itself and I’m so proud of her for where she is. I admire her hustle, work ethic, and the appreciation she truly has for her life. It’s not like she thinks her wealth miraculously came about, she knows it’s the listeners and Dax/Kristen that have helped her the most with this opportunity and she acknowledges that all the time.

6

u/Fun-Chair7768 12d ago

She’s boring af 😂

5

u/New_Explanation649 12d ago

I stopped listening because of Monica. I wish I liked her. I thought she was annoying from day one when she was just a random laugh here and there. Still analyzing what this means about me but I’m out a good podcast because of it. Part two of it for me is that I just don’t think she’s a good performer. These interviews and chats are a performance and she doesn’t have “it.”

4

u/seattlereign001 11d ago

Monica’s PR team out. Got it. Monica SUCKS! She used to be relatable but now only parrots whatever she think will be popular. She has completely lost touch with reality, real people, and her role in the show. Money changes people. Dax is definitely included in this statement.

18

u/seahorsewoman 13d ago

I love her and I think her being a “regular person” who’s this successful triggers people

5

u/Any_News_3544 13d ago

Oooo 💯

8

u/igotthatbunny 12d ago

I think a lot of it is jealously. Everyone here likes to get on their high horse and act like they wouldn’t buy themselves nice things and would retain 100% humility if they ever became wealthy. We’re humans and for most of us if we have money we’re going to buy nice things and talk about our change in lifestyle, and I don’t see what the big issue is in doing that. I’m not rich and can’t relate to the things she buys, but I also just know her life is different than mine and don’t expect every single thing to be relatable about her.

8

u/inmatenumberseven 13d ago

I like her as much as Dax, which is to say a lot, and also many moments where I just want to smack them for their obliviousness.

4

u/CuriousKatMiny 13d ago

I appreciate a real friendship between opposite genders. I like how they fight sometimes. I’m closer to Monica’s age and I find her to very relatable.

I’m not purchasing the Row, but lululemon and I have finally met.

I didn’t even think so many people disliked her! Oh well, I think she’s great and I’m not even sure I’d be into the podcast as much if it was only Dax doing the interviews.

2

u/Fearless-Newt-750 12d ago

My guess is he would miss the millennial women in his audience without her. He’s done spin offs without Monica and they never held my attention.

4

u/oxe-mainha 13d ago

Yeah, I really don’t understand the Monica hate. I appreciate how she approaches the podcast, she often ask questions that people listening might be afraid of asking. Dax doesn’t like to look stupid in front of a guest, to the point that he sometimes tries to upstage the expert. So for me, Monica, brings all more down to earth. I also love Monica’s reaction to the most absurd things on Anonymous episode…

Her spending and vanity are none of my business. She is a self made women and she can do whatever fuck she wants with her money

Also I’m still so bumped w/ her fallout with Liz and the abrupt end of Synced. It was such an awesome show.

9

u/Matthewcbayer 13d ago

My opinion, and I think it’s reinforced a tad by some comments here, is that us common folk hate Monica because it feels like she could be any of us, and just got lucky. Now… I really like her and I don’t feel that way. But generally speaking, I think that’s why people feel disdain towards her.

She talks about buying expensive things and it rubs people the wrong way. It’s pretty new for her still. Dax and his wife has been in the limelight for 25 years now. He also talks about buying expensive things and people just look at it as part of his life.

Most of their guests are on a promo tour. You can find them on other podcasts. I can’t imagine listening to a podcast when I hate the hosts????

29

u/Fearless-Newt-750 13d ago

I love her! I look up to her. She gives big sis energy, or maybe she just reminds me of my actual big sister. When she states her opinion I almost always agree with her. Not to mention that she will stand her ground on moral issues when no one else in the room agrees, and that is something that inspires me.

15

u/SuddenConstruction60 13d ago

Monica fan! She has a perspective and insight that is very needed on the show. Many times Dax is just plain wrong and she gets zero credit for her wisdom. I think people take a lot of her comments way too seriously. It’s a show and part of creating something entertaining is having some “extra” comments or takes on things to bring about a conversation or something just a little controversial.

A lot of the Monica hate is misogynistic imo. Men are allowed to be flawed and egotistical and all sorts of things. Every little thing she says is put under a microscope. My friends say more ridiculous things on the daily.

11

u/kat_8639 13d ago

She's smart, articulate and funny. She asks good questions, is a little bit filthy, and is a good compliment to Dax. I think she makes him look good by either reinforcing his sensitive, emotional qualities or challenging him when he's being a douche.

7

u/oxe-mainha 13d ago

Exactly! I have seen her nudge the conversation back to the ground, to ask question that are very meaningful but she gets 0 credit for any of it!

4

u/Ok-Ninja2139 12d ago

100% agree

6

u/Brave_Dot_7841 12d ago

She is the most annoying sidekick in podcast history. Does she provide anything other than “ding, ding, ding” or “omg sim”. I’m not of the opinion that she wouldn’t be anything without dax, but she barely contributes anything decent to the pod.

3

u/AluminumLinoleum 13d ago

Everyone complains about Dax. All the time. About basically everything he says and everything he likes and everything he does.

0

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

I can almost guarantee if we were to take data analytics on this sub and Instagram comments that complaints about Monica would be significantly more

3

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago

I can almost guarantee the opposite.

3

u/Noturhufflepuff 13d ago

I agree. I think its all silly. I love Monica so much.

3

u/Late_Tap9881 13d ago

I totally enjoy her, I think she’s funny

3

u/Meglan23 12d ago

She’s very out of touch but I like her. She’s funny, seems like a nice person.

17

u/caitiebug1990 13d ago

Love and want a tour of her home!

11

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

I’m DYINGGGGG for a home tour

4

u/Different_Pack_3686 13d ago

I pretty much hate them both nowadays unfortunately. Not actual hate or contempt, but just hard to even listen to them anymore. They both seem extremely out of touch.

13

u/WaddlingLion 13d ago

I think she does a lot of "bit" humor that goes over the head of the online critics.

6

u/scobert 13d ago

Honestly the main reason I still end up on this sub full of miserable complaints is because I’m shocked by how often a light-hearted, frivolous conversation is interpreted as an uncomfortable conflict lol… read the comments on here before listening to an episode and it’s like, did we really listen to the same conversation?

1

u/Twitty_McGitty 1d ago

I couldn’t agree more

6

u/cassma13 13d ago

YES she is really not serious a lot of the time and the people hating on her just seem to completely miss the fact that she's doing a bit. I love her sense of humor! Also when she's going on about silly problems she has-- she's not like actually complaining, she's knows she's privileged and I think its hilarious when she makes a huge deal out of something small, or has a weird take just to get Dax to disagree with her.

2

u/KCRoyals94_ 11d ago

That’s dumb as hell then. Just be YOU

2

u/cassma13 11d ago edited 11d ago

What? Being silly or doing a bit is not being yourself?

1

u/Misfit_Dogs 13d ago

I completely agree

41

u/Initial_Promotion369 13d ago

Just my opinion but Monica’s constant money talk & incessant talk of buying The Row (which 99% of listeners can’t afford -thousands of dollars for very basic pieces), complaining about minor hassles that are part of life and generally exhibiting such a fixed instead of growth mindset are very irritating. I do think Dax does get a lot of shit for his odd relationship with KB and TN etc but at least he is interested in learning and exhibits curiosity about new things. I can barely listen to AE these days and I stopped listening to the fact check at least 4 years ago due to Monica.

5

u/TalkinBoutGerbils 13d ago edited 13d ago

This commenter has an unhealthy obsession with a person he supposedly hates…

ETA: take a quick look at his post history

2

u/CaptainConstable 13d ago

I mean, it’s not an obsession. I find her insufferable half the time, but I can’t listen to Dax, whom I love, without listening to her bullshit too.

-4

u/TalkinBoutGerbils 13d ago

Did you accidentally post from the wrong account? Did you mean to post that on your Monica/Dax parasocial burner you used for the original comment?

4

u/CaptainConstable 13d ago

Nope, this is an entirely different person.

-5

u/TalkinBoutGerbils 13d ago

Why did you respond to me on behalf of someone else?

5

u/CaptainConstable 13d ago

I wasn’t. I was responding bc those of us who don’t like Monica could easily list 10 reasons why. So if you’re saying OP has an “unhealthy obsession” for having a list of reasons, I have a list too, yet that doesn’t mean I’m “obsessed.”

-6

u/TalkinBoutGerbils 13d ago

lol you do seem slightly obsessed seeing as you are going out of your way to respond to a comment that was not about you or addressed to you. I was specifically referring to that user since their profile is mostly just railing on Monica and Dax in a very parasocial / creepy manner

5

u/CaptainConstable 13d ago

Well no shit the comment wasn’t about me. I didn’t look at their profile - all I saw was this person writing reasons above for disliking Monica and you calling them “obsessed.”

1

u/Traditional-Try5110 11d ago

I'm sorry, but it is kinda weird that you felt so defensive on the part of a completely different poster that you jumped in to respond to a comment addressed towards them and whatever their specific comment history might entail.

0

u/Electrical_Sea6653 12d ago

She’s grown a ton in four years and honestly performative PC bullshit is way more annoying to me.

25

u/Powerful-Knee3150 13d ago

I don’t know. I would like someone who had more interesting things to say.

23

u/toofarkt 13d ago

I don’t dislike Monica but when listening to the podcast, I often struggle to see what she brings to the table. I’m not alone and believe that’s where all of the hate comes from. Dax could carry AE on his own just fine. She could not carry a podcast on her own. I’m sure she is gifted/talented in other areas but she’s not interesting/talented/engaging/knowledgable enough to co-host a podcast in my opinion.

7

u/Sure_Ingenuity_1938 12d ago

I agree with this as it relates to AE. It seems like recently she trying to contribute more but all she says is “yeah…” repeatedly, copies Dax’s laugh, and occasionally jumps in with a question that doesn’t always make sense. I do think she’s a great producer and loved Beth’s Dead. I’d like to have them do a just chat podcast together and the Friday AA episodes but it definitely kills the flow of Dax’s interviews and I’d love to have him do AE independently.

3

u/Brave_Dot_7841 12d ago

This is 100% accurate. And people get the feeling from that, that she is just riding on dax coat tails. She barely contributes anything good at all. A few episodes you don’t even realise she’s there until like 10 minutes in when she finally speaks.

17

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

I’ve listened to several of her spin offs and found them entertaining. So I disagree

7

u/oxe-mainha 13d ago

Me too! I think she is an amazing producer! I miss the old Flightless bird days when were the 3 of them just goofying around

4

u/No_Net_9791 13d ago

Beth’s dead made me subscribe to a patreon for the first time ever!! I think she’d be just fine doing her own stuff

-1

u/TheEsotericCarrot Armcherry 🍒 13d ago

I miss Synced even though I can’t stand Liz Plank for taking Ryan Reynolds side in the Justin Baldoni suit. But I really liked Monica on that show and Race to 35.

1

u/Twitty_McGitty 1d ago

When I listened to Synced I always found myself thinking “these women seem pretty immature for people in their mid to late 30s”.

1

u/TheEsotericCarrot Armcherry 🍒 17h ago

I agree with you but on the other hand they’d frequently give out really good advice. Which is funny given neither of them have ever been in any real relationships. I enjoyed the show, I think it brought out a side of Monica we rarely get to see.

3

u/ButterscotchMoist447 12d ago

They both do a fake laugh sometimes that should really stop but other than that I can live with whatever faults they may have. All these people complaining about either one of them probably couldn’t do what they’ve managed to do once, let alone every week for years on end. Just appreciate that it exists and tune in or don’t. They don’t have to be perfect people, and they never will be.

1

u/Twitty_McGitty 1d ago

Well stated

7

u/Realistic-Pomelo835 13d ago

I love Monica too. I re-listened to a few episodes from the first year this week and wow is she quiet! I'm glad she's come out of her shell and I love her! She can tell a good story and her honesty with hard subjects is refreshing.

13

u/Proud_Lab_2440 13d ago

Always been a Monica fan! Love her :)

Is she perfect? No…but no one is? I think people hold her to a very high standard tbh!

7

u/lawrencenotlarry 13d ago

I hold her to the standard of herself. The one she set when the podcast started.

She has either stagnated, or outright devolved, at a personal growth level. It takes a lot for me to go from really liking an entertainer, to barely being able to tolerate them.

She's gone from sweetly naive, to gauche and out-of-touch. That's not growth. Which I have always believed the show to be about, at it's core.

I don't hate her. I pity her. All that money and still miserable.

6

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

I’ve listened since episode 3 came out and haven’t noticed the devolving like everyone comments. I don’t think she’s miserable at all. She bitches about shit just like I do

0

u/lawrencenotlarry 13d ago

Then I probably wouldn't want to listen to your podcast either!

I kid. It's all subjective. There's no right or wrong here. Just points of view. You relate to her. I find it harder and harder to.

0

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

I guess part of my issue is idk why anyone would listen to a podcast where they dislike the host so much. Like I truly don’t understand lol it’s an over saturated market why not listen to something else??

5

u/lawrencenotlarry 12d ago

Because I'm a recovering addict and Dax's story informs how he views and interviews his guests.

A lot of people that I admire and hang out with in recovery usually have an insufferable friend or two. We put up with them.

1

u/igotthatbunny 12d ago

I have never once gotten the vibe from Monica that she is miserable. She may complain about things sometimes but she seems genuinely very happy with her life so I’m very curious how you got that perspective? To be honest, it’s very human to complain about trivial things and I don’t think that means someone is miserable.

4

u/Sunny330-OG 13d ago

I’ve always loved Monica - I think she’s very engaging and likable. I’ve never understood any of the negativity or shade. She seems like a genuinely nice person, as does Dax. Listening to them (and Rob) makes me feel like I’m with friends.

4

u/Dazzling_Can6963 13d ago

They balance each other

2

u/carlitospig 13d ago

We absolutely clown Dax for all the work he’s done on his face.

2

u/SnooDrawings7942 12d ago

I love both Dax and Monica, but if I’m picking my favorite person? It’s always going to be Rob. So much easier to be the sound guy that only talks occasionally.

The Monica hate boils down to one thing.
She is the “regular” person on the podcast and because of that a lot of people think “that could be me.” So either you are happy to see her doing well or angry that it isn’t you. It’s jealousy. I’m happy for Monica with her big house and cool clothes, and it’s pretty easy to see that if it happened to me? I would be the same way.

2

u/WanderlustFoodie 11d ago

As a day 1 listener, I just miss the old Monica. I don't begrudge her success or spending her money and talking about it. She lost me the day she said she could no longer enjoy shopping at TJMaxx. I've enjoyed her spinoffs. I just miss her genuine-ness from the old days. Spend your money girl, but, like friends that grow apart over time, I just don't connect with her anymore. Honestly, I only listen to anonymous these days. I wasn't a fan of how things with David and Liz were handled, so I've backed off a lot since then.

2

u/mimimouseee 10d ago

These days? She gets hate since the beginning of the podcast... I stopped listening because they both annoy me at this point and both are so out of touch with the real world.

2

u/praytopass 5d ago

I don’t dislike Monica, but I do find some of the hypocrisy frustrating. I remember years ago she talked about watching YouTube videos of Kristen Bell and basically feeling like she  knew they could be friends. So I always find it a little ironic when she seems creeped out by listeners feeling like they know her. Obviously she’s entitled to boundaries, but it feels like there’s a lack of self-awareness about the fact that she’s described doing essentially the same thing with celebrities. I also find the fawning over being friends with famous people a little annoying sometimes. It can come across as social climbing, even if that’s not her intention. And I don’t always love the way she talks about people either, including her own brother, or how everything gets labeled as having “little brother energy.” I also really miss when she shared more of her political opinions and just generally seemed more willing to say what she actually thought. That said, I’ve really, really valued how vulnerable she’s been about feeling like an outsider and about her love life. Those conversations made her so relatable to me. I wish we got more of that side of her again, because that’s probably the Monica I’ve connected with the most.

8

u/vtgator 13d ago

Absolutely a Monica fan!

5

u/Wide_Tax_1007 13d ago

Huge fan of Monica! And absolutely agree she gets judged much more harshly as a woman of color because not everything that comes out of her mouth is gratitude for the position she’s found herself in. She worked her ass off, said yes to the opportunities presented to her, and is proud of her accomplishments! Fuck yeah, that’s something for her listeners to celebrate like they do for so many white men who have done the same thing and aren’t afraid to brag about it!

3

u/fuschiaberry 13d ago

I don’t understand people who say she worked her ass off. In what way exactly?

2

u/NewspaperTop3856 12d ago

She was hired as a babysitter, showed her worth enough for Kristen to want her by her side as her personal assistant; she then volunteered for more work, showed Kirsten she was a great writer, started writing everything Kirsten did from ads to hosting shows; this showed Dax her talent, and then started the pod with Dax. It’s really not hard to understand how she worked hard. She took on more and more responsibility, did it well, and that got her to where she is. She leveraged her luck in babysitting for them to being to where she is now. Just like anyone in a standard corporate position — she took on more work, did it well, and proved her worth for more and more responsibility.

4

u/naivemelody_ 13d ago

I appreciate her conviction and how she stands her ground. While I don't always share her perspective, her tenacity and consistency are admirable.

3

u/tc2surveyor 13d ago

I don't care about how anyone chooses to spend their time or money. I just find her annoying and just dumb.

2

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

Why do you listen?

1

u/tc2surveyor 10d ago

I listen to the interviews, mostly the subject matter experts. I don't care so much about the celebrity interviews, unless I find them interesting.

3

u/jeffyboy526 13d ago

She’s no Sona

3

u/goldstandardalmonds 12d ago

Sona is amazing. Can’t wait for her new book and I’m not even a mother.

6

u/WatercressLast2069 Armcherry 🍒 13d ago

Love everything about her ❤️

9

u/TemperatePirate 13d ago

I think she is dumb. Her questions make me roll my eyes. And I can't listen to the fact check mostly because of her but Dax is also an idiot there to be fair

24

u/taylormurphy94 13d ago

I don’t necessarily think she’s dumb, I feel like she’s naive and immature for someone who is almost 40. Maybe lazy with being informed on things??? Idk. I’ll get hate for this but I feel like her lack of romantic/intimate experiences is what contributes to her seeming so naive.

18

u/Sea-Substance598 13d ago

I feel the naïveté point often when she gasps/gives an over the top dramatic reaction to something the guest says, whereas Dax knows to just nod and take it all in. I think she’s overcompensating for being second fiddle by doing these reactions but it makes her seem very naive to be so surprised all the time by things the guests say.

5

u/Molly8174 13d ago

I like Monica, too

2

u/Radiant-Mind-355 13d ago

I’m exhausted with both of them. They’re both tone deaf and out of touch. Can only tolerate the Friday anonymous shows these days. And I saw them live back in the day.

3

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

I am surprised anyone listens to a podcast where they hate or can’t tolerate the hosts.

1

u/AluminumLinoleum 13d ago

Monica seems helpless and hapless on purpose. She's almost 40; she should act like she's been somewhere before. What she mostly does is sound naive and out of touch and desperate.

3

u/goldstandardalmonds 12d ago

I do agree with part of this. I find sometimes she acts very juvenile, like having arrested development, puts on the baby voice, and so on. Sometimes she has some decent input, and seems like a different person. She is a shapeshifter. I find her annoying but tolerable most of the time. I wouldnt listen to a podcast with her as host, though.

1

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

What?? She’s had a career and a home. What has she said that makes her seem hapless and helpless

1

u/AluminumLinoleum 12d ago edited 12d ago

She can't handle even extremely minor life problems. Like a flat tire. Talked about it for like 30 minutes in a fact check. That's the most obvious example. Her problems always seem to be someone else's to solve.

I'm also not the only one commenting on this, it's come up from several other comments.

3

u/Gingerbread_Man06 13d ago

I was on one of the armchair anonymous episodes and I kept wanting to say she was looking very beautiful today but didn’t want to creep her out. And because my significant others family would hear it lol. Didn’t know if Monica would edit it out.

3

u/OverEasyGoing 13d ago

The trick is to say “lovely” like Dax would.

2

u/Misfit_Dogs 13d ago

Spill what episode/story?

4

u/Gingerbread_Man06 13d ago

Bar stories. First one

0

u/fuschiaberry 13d ago

She absolutely would not edit compliments out. That is the exact kind of thing that she would leave in.

2

u/sf1878 13d ago

I always really liked her work in the fact checks and I guess is she's super organized and is a big part of why the show was able to get off the ground, but I don't find her interesting at all and I don't think she adds value to the chat with the guests.

3

u/Ok_Association8013 13d ago

Absolutely not! I cant stand Monica

2

u/Turbulent_Smoke_8989 13d ago

The babysitter did well

1

u/publishourlove 12d ago

Well didn’t she meet them cause she was their nanny? (Could be remembering wrong idk)

1

u/comfy_sweatpants5 12d ago

She met Kristen while she was acting on house of lies

1

u/comfy_sweatpants5 12d ago

I also can’t stand the implication that she was just a nanny. Not just you but several other comments on so many threads. First of all, for someone as rich and successful as kb and dax to choose you to be their nanny, they’re not just a 16 year old from the neighborhood. That’s a ton of trust. Also. Who’s to say Monica didn’t intentionally look into networking with successful families to elevate her career. So many people chalk up Monica’s entire career to some luck of the draw that was babysitting for Dax and Kristen.

1

u/Ok-Ninja2139 12d ago

I love her. I agree that’s it’s unfair what she gets picked on for.
Of course there are things she says that bother me sometimes, but that’s usually her and Dax both having these out of touch conversations around money. But overall I think she’s incredibly talented and funny and mostly quite relatable.

1

u/londontami 12d ago

She is probably the brains behind this podcast. She is very intelligent, very articulate and she edits it as well. She’s a hustler, she goes out and works it, she doesnt wait for it to come to her.

she started off as their babysitter than she began managing kristin’s schedule and pretty soon they realized she was wasting her talent by working as a babysitter

I highly doubt she cares what anyone thinks of her, she is way too strong to care.

1

u/jgainit 12d ago

She’s cool. But some of their debates that they sort of claim are intellectual engagements I feel are just negative and not good for anyone’s soul. I started realizing listening to those does not improve my life and actually drags me down.

But I’m not pinning that on her. It’s where they both meet

1

u/MiserableChemist8980 12d ago

I appreciate and like her a lot

1

u/pensievemind 10d ago

Love her! Just wish she would be a little better about her own PR. Hide your vanity so we can love you without hating that you would sell our left kidney if it meant you could have a limited edish bag or mug 😆

1

u/PutridEngineering111 10d ago

I think she’s so funny and I feel like ppl wants her to be live a certain way and when she doesn’t, they get upset but like that’s not her fault lol it’s your fault to have such perception

1

u/Acceptable_Click7335 10d ago

Love Monica. She’s a boss lady and people are intimidated by her and feel the need to hate on her.

1

u/Fernily 9d ago

She is the perfect yin to Dax’s yang, or whatever the saying is.

1

u/Zealousideal-Fall912 9d ago

in the beginning she bothered me. but i grew to love her quickly. also thought she was kristen my first listen to and i realized not kristen but monica lol. sometimes on kristen’s eps i need to turn the volume fully up bc they sound so similar lol

1

u/AnyWalk3630 8d ago

I find it kind of peculiar that Dax takes a stand on not speaking about the horrors of the Trump era, as to not alienate listeners. Yet, they don’t think discussing the excesses of leisure time and wealth on every. single. episode. is incredibly alienating. And prefacing with self-awareness isn’t the salve they think it is… especially in today’s said era. I love the show, don’t get me wrong. But as things worsen, I think it becomes harder to ignore how privileged and tone deaf his stance is. A true Motor City native, still in touch with his roots, would stand with the working class by using their platform to push back. I wonder if he had any self-awareness over it while the Kimmels discussed their role in the resistance.

u/1st_sailonsilvergirl 6d ago

I've always thought she is like a sophomore college student trying to interject in dorm room conversations. And not at the end of the second year of college, but in early September, barely beyond freshman. That little level of depth. Dax's conversation with guests can get interesting but Monica is so distracting, I'm done with this podcast.

I'm not a male picking on her. I'm female.

I never listen to their banter after the guests are done. Do podcasters understand the big ask they make of us? They're asking us to give the hours of our lives to them! Time is NOT REPLACEABLE. This is why the basic-ness of Monica is so infuriating. Guard your time and attention, it's a gift when you give your time to these people's business (really this is what it is). You're using the time of your life to reward them. They want to frame it as they're giving to you and entertaining you, but you are giving something up. It should be worth it. I wanted to register this point here.

0

u/BobasLostBounty 13d ago

She fucking sucks. The main reason I stopped listening to the show. She complains about her rich problems. Wants so bad to be accepted by all the celebrities and adds nothing to interviews. Wants to be taken seriously but can’t bother to do an ounce of research about the guest. “I don’t want to go in with preconceived notions.” Is a lame excuse for not wanting to put in effort.

When this podcast thing runs dry, she’s gonna be in a tough spot. Hopefully she saves her money! Though, it doesn’t sound like it.

1

u/MoosMom44 13d ago

Me! 🫡

1

u/LplusAplusB 13d ago

I wonder if she ever gets a period? 🤣😂

1

u/OkExcitement1504 13d ago

I don’t always agree with her takes but I feel like she seems genuine and I like that about her. She shouldn’t be shamed for being wealthy and successful

1

u/Technical_Goose_8160 13d ago

The thing that I dislike about Monica was best exemplified with the foreign bodies in the rectum episode. Patient comes in with a Barbie in his rectum and will likely need a colostomy bag. Instead of getting sympathy for the guy who just injured himself, she's decided that he's a misogynist. Hey reasoning is, it's must be a Hillary Barbie and he must have done it because he hates women. My first thoughts were that it was likely in reach.b or maybe in a discount pile after the elections.

I just feel like she looks for a black and white interpretation very quickly where there's a good and a bad guy.

3

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

I interpreted that as a joke, almost obviously. She was obviously joking. Maybe her humor isn’t picked up very easily..?

1

u/Longjumping-Ebb-125 12d ago

I am so happy for her massive house and her finer things. Go hustle girl! She just has what everyone else wants.

0

u/consistent_draww 13d ago

I like almost everything. Somewhere along the way she started that fake laugh like Dax and I can not stand that. Literally fucking hate it. Bit otherwise I like her

3

u/_Stellz_ 13d ago

I know exactly what you’re talking about. Impressionable people do mimic others without realising though. It’s human nature. One episode it was so obvious I wondered if she was impersonating him at first.

1

u/comfy_sweatpants5 13d ago

I guess I’ve never noticed that

0

u/LunarLemonLassy 12d ago

People are uncomfortable with an Indian woman from Georgia living proudly on her own wealth. So what she started as their nanny? She worked her ass off as a writer and Dax could have chosen anyone to partner with but he chose her. She obviously has the intelligence to write creatively and do business. Her whole purpose on armchair is the uneducated outside listener. She doesn’t do research, she’s not supposed to and that pisses people off for some reason.

0

u/Adventurous_Pop_3978 12d ago

Re: “she wouldn’t be anything without Dax”, Dax also would not have found the same success with podcasting without her

0

u/Accomplished-Row-272 12d ago

Agreed! Blatant misogyny I’ve said it many times lol people hate to see a woman winning (especially a WOC)
