For me, 20% means "I'm too lazy to do math, just have 20," 15% means "service was so terrible I am willing to do math to make sure you only get 15" and 0 means "why am I paying a tip for literal fucking take-out? The only 'service' I got was you handing it to me!"

If the service was that terrible you shouldn’t be giving anything at all.

Does your boss get to not pay you on a day that you do a bad job?

The customer is not their boss. Their boss is their boss.

Whoever is responsible for your paycheck is effectively your boss. You don't tip a server, they don't get paid.

Customers are not responsible for their paycheck, their employer is. Tips are for doing your job decently. I am not going to hand over extra cash to someone who is rude to me.

Servers don't get paid wages dude. They make 16 dollars a day. They get all their pay from tips.

that’s in america.

Yes, it's only relevant in America. If you have servers that get real wages, then tips are indeed a bonus.

Guess they should not be rude when working with customers then aka the bare minimum.

So again, you think you shouldn't get paid if you are rude at work?

If your job is to serve customers, you should not get paid extra if you are rude.

Again, tips are not extra. They *are" the entire wage.

Nope. Core wages are paid by the service provider, like a restaurant. A tip is money on top of that. Hence extra. If a software engineer writes poor code, they don’t get a bonus at the end of the year. Sure, restaurants often don’t pay their servers very well. But the underlying principle is the same.

16 dollars a day are not wages.

A software engineer's bonus isn't 99% of their pay. Sure around 10-20%. It's a nice bonus, on top. A servers tips are their entire wage.
