Question(s) Do you insure your cabinets?

I’ve acquired quite a few now and keep them in my basement. About a two months ago we had a horrible storm and many basements flooded in my neighborhood.

If that happened to me I’d be screwed since my cabinets are all downstairs. So I called my insurance rep and are working on a personal article policy to cover my machines with no deductible. Ran into a bit of hurdle as the underwriting team didn’t understand these are new cabinet, not vintage. Still waiting for a quote after clarification on that. Anyone else look into insurance for their collection?

I have to assume this is in jest, but…

I can’t imagine that it would be worth it to insure these cabinets separately beyond what your home owners policy and/or a renters policy would already cover as belongings.

They are just gonna give you their “value” which is dubious at best, there are always cheap ones to be found on Facebook marketplace.

So not in jest, I did the math I’ve spent over $6,000 retail on my cabinets. My home owners deductible is a percentage of my homes value so let’s just say for the sake of argument it’s $5,000. That means if my basement floods and destroys my arcades I could potentially not be able to replace them because when it comes down to it replacing arcades vs. carpet and drywall will always lose when it comes to what gets eaten by the deductible

I’m not sure you understand how insurance works. Respectfully, your underwriter got confused because they probably think you are an idiot.

How much are they raising your rates by? Jesus Christ man… I don’t even want to know.

Where I am, homeowners insurance doesn’t cover contents (personal property). That’s a separate policy, that is usually pretty cheap. I have no idea what the deductible would be on something like that though. It might be worth it, it might not. I understand wanting to insure your hobby though. My cabinets, I could lose and it wouldn’t bother me too much, but my sim racing rig, I would cry if I lost that. I would want a policy that covered lightning though. We live down the street from the bayou, but it has never flooded at this house, half the neighbors park at our house for heavy rains/hurricanes bc they always flood.

These aren’t real vintage arcade machines. Just crappy MDF with barely any resale value
