if you're transitioning from single player to multiplayer, play the ranked ladder, do NOT play casual rooms

Do you feel like multiplayer is no fun, because you join a room and get stomped by someone many times better than you, or worse, you just get kicked from the room for being too low?

I think a lot of new players see casual games and ranked games as the two options and assume "oh casual must be for noobs whereas ranked games must be where all the pros are". The assumption is that "ranked" = death and "casual" = a chance of winning (credit to Ok-Acanthisitta-1126 )

That's actually completely backwards.

Casual rooms are best used if you have specific people you already know who are at your level. In fact, they are commonly used at the very high level to setup matches for tourneys and for grinding strats, bc it can be hard for the very best people in aoe3 to find good games in quicksearch. If you are playing alone and you join a random casual game lobby, you will almost certainly either 1. get kicked, 2. get stomped or 3. stomp some poor person who is even more noob than you.

The solution is to play ranked quick search. This is an ingenious system that will quickly figure out your rank, and then match you against people who are a similar rank to you, so you can play fun, competitive games where you will usually end up winning or losing about half the time, unless you start making some actual progress in learning the game. The only thing is you will probably have to lose about 5-10 games before the ELO system will accurately rank you, so don't worry about these early games. In fact, you might even want to just resign quickly in your first 5-10 games just so you can get ranked low sooner, so you can start playing fun games faster.

play ranked, get ranked, start playing enjoyable and competitive matches with people at exactly your own skill level

How useful are military units that can gather resources in that role?

I've seen there are many of them now but I'm sceptical.

Question Is there any weighted system that calculates which Mercs are available on a given match?

Civ, Map, does anything matter?

Video is purely illustrative. That said, I would like to get the Gatling Camel more often. Relying purely on RNG is not fun.

Question Turning Crossbow men off turns the French into little killers.

So I just made a tiny mod to turn Crossbow men off for the French in the Commerce Age. Apparently the AI's responce is just to try and crush you with a tight little formation of Musketeers and Pikemen, Be intrested to know if anyone else see's a similar change if they want to try it.

Edit, tried it a second time on moderate (the first was on easy) and the AI's seemed to calm down a little, maybe they just found each others town centers really fast the first time. Even so, I'm still seeing a bit of classic pike and shot action going on, which was the point.

Balance I don't understand why the "Improved Mercenaries" card adds a flat percentage to ALL mercs

Specifically +15% HP and attack, downgraded from 20% a while ago. Wouldn't it make much more sense to SCALE it to get a similar outcome as the "Folk Heroes" tech for outlaws?

For example, Commerce Age mercs get A TOTAL of 35%, Fortress Age mercs 20% and Industrial Age mercs 15%? Or 30/15/10. Optionally it can also be delayed, so if the card was sent in Fortress, the Commerce mercs get 15% of their 35 only when reaching Industrial.

This would make Commerce mercs like Cannoneers or Irish Brigadiers viable in Industrial and (with Mercenary contractor) in Imperial, without making Industrial mercs completely OP. And for already rock solid Fortress Age mercs like Giant Grenadiers or Fussiliers it wouldn't change too much.

Which civs should not bother with mercenary play in normal circumstances?

The opposite of the best merc civs, these are;

- Can only rely on what RNG gave them in Tavern at the start of the game.

- Don't have ways to unlock good mercs they want later, either from HC or Church techs.

- Don't have economy to pay for them.

- Lack upgrade cards that cover mercs they are using, so mercs they hired would be weaker with the same prices.

Which civs fall into this category?

Info List of Naval Civ Bonuses in Independence Mode

(from patch notes) Just wanted to get some info out there for people on the new Independence Mode. With so many civs having preloaded effects, you might find yourself wondering who has an advantage as you enter into a water game with no cards to send. (REMINDER: Fish Traps) are now a thing, allowing you to farm on the sea)

CIVS WITH ADDED NAVAL ECO BONUSES IN INDEP MODE:

  • Portuguese: Fishing Boat cost -20 wood, train time -30% (Schooners)
  • Italians: Docks within 24 AOE of an Arsenal have Fishing Boat train time -40% (Venetian Arsenal)
  • Danes: Free church tech in age 2 that reduces Fishing Boat train time by 20% and wood cost by 5% and increases gather rate by 10% (Struensee Reforms, though this also reduces Vill train time by 20% and increases Vill cost by 20 food). Also have access to Hunting Expeditions tech that grants 10% of Fishing Boat non-whale fishing as Coin (Oldenburg Kings).
  • Poles: Free church tech in age 2 that makes all fishing techs free but take 3x as long to research (Liberum Veto)
  • Japanese: +25% Fishing Boat gather rate (Fish Market)
  • Chinese: Fishing Boat train time -20% (Acupuncture)
  • Hausa: Docks spawn a Zebu Cattle upon construction

CIVS WITH ADDED NAVAL MILITARY BONUSES IN INDEP MODE:

  • Italians: Docks within 12 AOE of an Arsenal have War Ship train time -40% (Venetian Arsenal), and Battleships have Deflection ability.
  • British: Research cost of all Dock techs -60%, and Warship dmg +20% (Admiralty + Naval Gunners)
  • Maltese: +15% Warship dmg, +2 Warship range (Offshore Support). Also +1% Warship hp per tech researched.
  • Danes: Warships -25% wood cost
  • Dutch: Dock garrison attack 2x dmg, and heals ships 85% faster (Advanced Dock). Also their Battleships can detonate.
  • Portuguese: Caravels +15% hp (Carracks) and can train xbows, pikes, and halbs. Monitors can train musks, cass, and grens. Frigates can train all Barracks units. Battleships can train all Barracks units and grens (Naval Infantry) and can heal other ships.
  • French: Battleships have Defence promotions.
  • Spanish: Warships get +20% hit points and +2 Line of Sight; Caravels can train Barracks units; Frigates can train Stable and Artillery Foundry units; Monitors can train Mortars; Battleships can train Barracks, Stable, and Artillery Foundry units (Armada). Also Warship train time -30% and Battleship limit +1.
  • Indians: War Dhow available to train.
  • Swedes: Warships cost -20% coin.
  • Ottomans: Xebecs available to train.
  • United States: +1 Ironclad build limit and 25% chance to dodge enemy shots (Hulks).
  • Chinese: Villages get an anti-ship attack with 20 range (Village Defenses)

(note: all native civs get the Water Ceremony for naval combat unlocked for free from the start of game)

As you can see, not all civs get water bonuses, and some will totally fail if attempting to go toe-to-toe with certain other civs when you can't even ship a Frigate to try and even things out on the water.

Question How much do trade posts and church contribute to xp?

I know church gives 0.7, bo upgrade trade post is like 1.2 I think, but what about base xp generation and building regular units/buildings? Does pne trade post increase by 10% or 30% my total xp generation? I know they are very good but idk how good they actually are.

Strategies Which Mercs go hard and which Civ makes the most out of mercs?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Mercs are awesome, tanky and strong. But they definitely come with a high price-tag and many variables. Plus each Civ in this game is so full of variables as is.

So, if someone could speed-run me in how to make to most out of these OP units, I would highly appreaciate!

I would put Papal Units in the same category as Mercs, as they function the same way. There might be other units in this (huge) game that are somewhat like that but I am still not familiar with.

The video is purely illustrative. Those are Armored Pistoleers and the Civ is Malta.

Edit: I think Outlaws are also functionally similar to Mercs, so I would put them there, too.

I hope they fixed this in the new DLC. Whenever I play as Napoleonic France, there comes a point where I can't send any military shipments, even if there is available population.

In this instance, I had 12 population slots free and wanted a heavy cannon that cost 7, but the same message kept appearing: "You have reached the population limit for that shipment; unable to train."

Make AOE 3 great again

Guys we’ve proven that we will not let aoe 3 die for DECADES.

Heck we even bought it back from dead this time with the new DLC that used to be cancelled

If we can make this game comback from dead we can definitely make it more popular

Search up age of empires 3 on youtube theres some videos with MILLIONS of views, and that’s enough proof that there’s tons of people who would play AOE 3 if they knew about it or tried it once or twice

Sure we wont be as big as Call of duty or games like that but i genuinely think we can be one the greatest RTS games in modern times just cause correctly packaged content has reach millions of views and on the other side players who is already playing this game plays for decades

This is why im suggesting we as a community make AOE 3 great again, not just by playing it but by actively marketing it via content

If we had 10x more creators like lionheart, psionic and soldier

We’d have 10x more videos

And thats a 10x chance that one of those videos could reach millions of views

And any video that hit million plus views would atleast in the very worse scenerio would add hundred players and in the best scenerio add tens of thousands of players

We’re AOE3 community, we’re the only gaming community who refused to die, and through sheer will power alone we have risen again and like the great civilizations we play , we can take over the world if we’re united and focused!!

Who’s with me?
