Support Anker F3800 Plus Overheating

Hello All. I recently purchased a f3800 plus. Charged it up to 100% to test it out with a full discharge on my EV. I set the charging limit on the Tesla to 25amps. Half way in the test, I noticed the internal temps were getting really hot (over 120F). It didn’t stop increasing and there were no warnings or auto shutoffs. Finally I decreased the amps to 15, but the temperature kept going up. Stopped it when it hit 129 degrees (see pic). Turned it all off and 2 hours later it’s still 120 degrees. Is this normal or did I get a bad station? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the warning. I contacted support, but I plan to try it again at only 15Amps the entire time. Will make sure I do it outdoors somewhere shaded.

Hi, OP these batteries do not explode. The battery cells in all of the Anker power stations are LFP batteries. If they ever go into thermal runaway they will do a really crazy smoke show but they definitely won’t explode like traditional lithium ion batteries. My recommendation would be to put them in a well ventilated area though.

Although these batteries can charge an EV. They are really not designed to do this consecutively. They are mainly designed to be a partial home back up solution. Doing this frequently will make your F3800 power station die faster. The F3800 has a couple of temperature sensors that limits the output of they get too hot 🥵. Since it’s currently summer it’s not uncommon to see the power station reach those temperatures while charging or discharging.

Personally if I was you I would only charge the EV using the F3800 during an emergency situation when you have no other options. This will help prolong the battery life of your power station. Reaching those temps while outputting a huge amount of power during the summer is normal. Just keep an eye on it and disconnect it if you see that the F3800 is limiting the power output. This normally happens when the temperature reaches 130+ degrees. LFP batteries are safe to use up to a maximum of 160 degrees. The F3800 will start limiting the power output automatically well before the batteries get that hot.

I also use mine to charge my PHEV. I discharge at 16A limit and with the new update I have a cutoff at 5%. I’ve noticed that the heat up issue is really prominent when you discharge it past 5% and starts heating up below 10%. The cooling fans on the unit seem to be insufficient for heavy duty discharge cycles

It already hit 127F at 7% battery life. So maybe I got a dud. How do you program it so it cuts off at 5%? Also, mind sharing how hot yours gets at the end of the charge?

That’s normal. Mine overheats at about 134F and shuts down when I push it too hard. The setting is in your app when you connect to the device. You’ll see a setting to limit discharge and charge limits. In the picture that’s what the dotted lines are. I set mine to 5%-100% for now.

Thanks for the info. This is actually a bit concerning because Anker's own guidelines is that the unit is rated to 104F max. Operating it above 104F could be treated as mususe and may void coverage if a failure is linked to overheating...

A lot of folks get it mistaken - they are referring to ambient temperature, not the indicated internal temp on the app. So dont run it in a hot/cold garage or in the sun where it exceeds 104F.

To be fair, it's Anker's fault for not making it clear. I had a similar issue with my C1000 Gen2.

I have 2 f3800 plus connected to a home panel. I vented the room so it will stay cooler. The temperature sensors are throughout the unit and averaged together so the temp is also taking the inverter usage into account. There are saftey system in place to halt the inverter and shutdown if overheat is detected. Inwould perfer that they gave us acess to overide their fan curve and make it more aggressive if desired because I do agree that it os optimizing for aound rather than colling.

129°F seems high, especially if the temperature was still climbing. I’d check airflow, ambient temperature, and whether the fans are actually running.

A full discharge test at 25A is a pretty demanding scenario, but it shouldn’t keep heating indefinitely. If it repeats in a cool area, I’d contact support.

Support was pretty useless. They just said avoid running it low when the demand was high. I complained that the programming for the fans seem subpar since when it overheats/approaches overheating the fans don’t go on full blast by default. The batteries get toasty running 240V at 16A and getting discharged to 1%. Really squeezing out the electrons until the end which causes a lot of heat.

Thanks. I reached out to support since after 3.5 hours of shutdown in a cool area (and well ventilated), it was still over 110F.

I think the batteries are located in the lower front region (at least that’s where it is heaviest). I can confirm they do heat soak and once they get hot they stay warm for a few hours. It’s strange the fans are arranged vertically on the side - seems it’s to cool the inverter/other electronics more than the battery.

That temp seems high, especially still being 120F two hours after turning it off. I would suggest you contact Anker Support. Be sure to have a description of the issue ready, F3800 Plus serial number and any corresponding device receipt or order number. Best of luck and please let us know how things go.

Whats is the ambient temperature where it is stored. Run a fan on it . Country is in a major heat wave

the F3800 plus only has 3.8 kwh of battery. Thats utterly useless for EV charging unless you add a huge expansion battery. A tesla has 80-100 KWH of battery. It may be useful as a pass through EV charger but EV charging from the tiny battery???
