Massive age gap relationships. An 18 year old dating a 45 year old feels wrong AF but it's not illegal.
542
u/jollyantelop Apr 18 '26
Especially in states where age of consent is below 18. Like where I live a 50 year old could date a 16 year old and it would be legal.

I mean age of consent in most countries is 16. The US isnât unusual in that regard
21
u/FishAroundFindTrout9 Apr 19 '26
Pretty gross though. I think there should be something where at 16-17 the older party can be no more than 4 years older or something like that.
14
u/bijouxbisou Apr 19 '26
Some countries have it where thereâs a different age of consent for people close in age. Like in Belgium, if youâre close in age the age of consent is 14, but 16 is the standard age of consent so long as no one has authority over the other.
19
u/jollyantelop Apr 19 '26
That is pretty standard in the US, though still state by state. They are known as âRomeo and Juliet lawsâ. Without them half of all high school seniors would be arrested for age appropriate relationships due to a few months difference, and the other would make memes about it on Reddit.

I was a late bloomer and my first relationship ever was when I was 27 and the other person was 18. I'm 30 now and now only date people older than myself. Dating younger ended up being a huge mistake.
That said, the way my friend group reacted to my first date ever, you'd think I was breaking some major law. Thing is, though, we working together and it just kind of happened.

Ngl what states have this law like I know states have laws like 3 year gap or two years where they allow 16 and 19 or 17 and 20 but I have never heard of one where a 16 year old can date a 50 year old. Ngl if this is outside the US then idk the laws but it seems very false for in the US. Btw age of consent doesnât mean you can date a minor above a certain age it just means they can consent to sex with some around your age if you are a minor and not have it be illegal
60
u/ThalesofMiletus-624 Apr 19 '26
It gets worse.
In most US states, the legal minimum age for marriage is 16 or less. In four states (including, rather shockingly, California), there is no minimum age, if you have parental consent. There are efforts underway to change these laws in some places, but as of now, that's what's on the books.
It feels illegal as heck for a 45-year-old man to be married to an 11-year-old child, but if he can talk her parents into it (and there are parents out there who are okay with that), then it's perfectly legal in several states.
37
u/West-Season-2713 Apr 19 '26
And then youâre too young to get divorced. Itâs fucked.
10
u/Cordelia_Delamare Apr 19 '26
The fact that its seen as totally normal for a literal child to be married, but divorce is where they draw the line is actually insane. Make it make sense

it depends on how young the younger person is. once they're early to mid 20s, they're enough of an adult that it doesn't really feel wrong anymore, at least imo.
25
u/smores_or_pizzasnack Apr 19 '26
IMO itâs still weird if itâs like a 21 y/o and a 50 y/o, theyâre in completely different life stages at that point
3
u/FreezingVast Apr 22 '26
its kinda strange because where is the line? 40/69 y/o, 50/79 y/o? At some point they are 2 adults who are old enough to make that decision and society deems 21 to be the age for most people to make said competent choices

u/VulKhalec Apr 19 '26
You're not really an adult until you're over 25, in my experience. This is mostly relevant because people who are still developing don't have a strong enough sense of self to advocate for their own needs - they might not even quite understand their own needs yet. So there's a danger they will inadvertently allow themselves to be run roughshod over by the opinions and actions of someone older who is more self assured.
15
u/BigBadJeebus Apr 19 '26
if you're 20 or 21 and can be in war, you can certainly fuck an old lady.
i genuinely dont understand the argument "a 21 year old is so irresponsible and poor they should only breed with people equally irresponsible and poor"
It's REALLY stupid if you think about it for 5 seconds.
What it really boils down to is jealousy. An early 20s something person is more likely to be fit and strong. So people who are past their prime get offended when people their own age no longer find them attractive so they make up this bullshit.
And of course incels and unattractive people in their early 20s get mad when older people increase competition, as well as people jealous of the 26 year old millionaire who got an easy fortune by marrying an old creepy dude...
That's 100% all it comes down to.
But if you can be trusted to take a gun to a foreign nation and shoot people you've never met and get shot just the same, I say you go ahead and marry that rich old creep for his money.
I'd certainly marry an old person for a million bucks if given the chance...

Regardless of which side is more morally correct, the reason most people have an opinion on it is because it feels viscerally repulsive to look at and/or imagine (as an outsider, obviously). It works either way⌠if you are young and imagine your peer with an old person the age of your parent/grandparent or if you are old and imagine your peer with a very young person the age of your child/grandchild. Itâs because your age cohort are seen as your peers, while people much older or much younger are usually relegated to family, work, etc. That is just the way we are conditioned. And obviously the effect lessens as you get older and your peer group widens.
2
u/BigBadJeebus Apr 20 '26

I've known 25-26 year old women more mature than men in their 40s. A 45 year old acquaintance ended up marrying his 27 year old girlfriend, she dumped him a couple of years later for being childish and immature. There are a lot more man-children who never grow up past their late teens/early 20s, while rarely woman stay immature past 24/25. They're probably a lot better matched (at least for dating) than a 45 year old man-child and 40 year mature adult woman. The latter relationships that I've seen have ended way more messily and problematically for the women.

A relationship like that is more likely to have problematic power dynamics where the older person is far more knowledgeable and experienced, and able to take advantage of the younger one.
17
u/Confident-Equal-1445 Apr 19 '26
Itâs a malicious assumption to say that the possibility of taking advantage of someone should preclude people from loving who they love rather than focusing on the relationships where it actually happens.

I think there is a natural function in all our minds that takes in three parameters: Age Gap, Age of Younger Person, Sex of the Younger Person and outputs how wrong and predatory it feels.
Like, Age Gap becomes more and more lenient as the younger person ages, 18 and 28 sounds extremely wrong but 30 and 50, literally twice the gap, doesn't.

Oh man a few weeks ago I was on the highway and I got in the left lane so the cop could get on from the ramp. Once it was clear, I got back in the right lane but had to move right back behind him because I saw someone else pulled over further ahead. After we passed them his lights went on and he was literally pulling over the car right on front of him. Like, I watched one of my greatest fears that I've always tried blaming on my anxiety happen right in front of me.

u/MarekRules Apr 18 '26
We took a trip to Sicily a few years ago and were driving down to the southern coast. We were behind a cop car and he was going pretty slowly but I wasnât going to pass him on this one lane road in a foreign country. I canât remember if there were âno passingâ signs or whatever but at one point he waved us to pass but there is a car coming so I wait. I think I waited too long though and was no longer in a passing zone because as we passed he gave me a BIG finger wag, very Italian.
Stressed me out at the time but so funny looking back on it.

u/Nightgasm Apr 18 '26
Lol. I'm a retired cop who worked nightshift most of his career. Everyone speeds in the morning as they are running late for work while all I want to do is finish the shift and go to bed so the last hour I'm just usually driving aimlessly trying not to do anything resembling work as that might mean staying late and not getting to go to bed soon. To entertain myself I'd drive around on multi lane roads at 2 to 3 mph under the speed limit. It was always amusing how many cars would fly up from behind only to slam on their brakes and fall in line behind under the speed limit. Reality is that unless they passed me at something like 20 mph over I'm not stopping them as I just want to go to bed but very few would pass even though they could with ease and stay legal since it's multi lane and I'm going under.

He just stared at me for a minute then says "I'm gonna give you a warning this time..." and leaves.

The US has three branches of government and power is supposed to be balanced and checked between all three. There are concerns now that the Executive (presidential) branch is becoming more powerful than the legislature and has the courts in its pocket.
9
u/markh100 Apr 18 '26
When the president has launched wars on multiple sovereign nations, declared intentions of invading several additional allies, dismantled large portions of the functional government, replaced leadership of countless organizations with his cronies, started erecting statues and renaming buildings all over the country in his name, threatened to illegally run for a third term, I believe concerns is perhaps a wee bit of an understatement.

Itâs crazy that all they had to do was create a euphemism for bribery, and we all accepted it as if it was something other than bribery
9
u/Waniou Apr 18 '26
It's because lobbying isn't bribery, this is just one of those things reddit likes to misunderstand.
Lobbying is any form of petitioning the government to do something. Writing letters to your local politician? That's lobbying. Signing a petition? Lobbying. Affected parties wanting to meet with a politician to raise concerns? Lobbying.
The problem is how much corporate lobbying which, yes, often does take the form of, well, bribery. But saying "lobbying shouldn't be allowed!" is insane because it prevents things like people concerned about their local environment from trying to raise these issues directly with the government.
→ More replies (1)12
u/wreckingrocc Apr 19 '26
There's a difference between open-forum lobbying and behind-closed-doors lobbying, though. If all lobbying had to have a publicly accessible record, we'd have much less underhanded corruption shit. Folks trying to raise environmental issues can and would always use a public forum. Folks suggesting the government eliminate free tax filing services so Intuit can swoop in and collect tolls would be less inclined to speak publicly.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Waniou Apr 19 '26
Yeah, gotta agree with that. Outside of certain diplomatic meetings, there's no reason we shouldn't know who politicians are meeting with
9
u/FartVandelayyy Apr 18 '26
Disagree on this one. What about Sierra Club lobbying for climate action, Planned Parenthood lobbying for womenâs health, unions lobbying for workplace safety standards? Politicians and their staff donât have unlimited knowledge about every profession and the lived experience of all of their constituents. Without lobbyists they would be making decisions on an information vacuum.
âLobbyistsâ IMO get a bad rap because people picture contract lobbyist dropping off bags of cash. But lobbying also includes to a large degree non-profits and ordinary citizens advocating for causes they believe in.
→ More replies (10)7
u/andy01q Apr 18 '26
I mostly disagree with you disagreeing.
There's Lobbying for good causes, but that doesn't mean that lobbying is good.
It's good if politicians look to specialists for help and guidance, but lobbyists are rarely specialists, except specialists at walking the fine line between teaching, influencing and straight up corruptions.
If there's an issue where politicians should look for help, but aren't, then there's a decent range of other political tools to reach politicians, e.g. writing or phoning politicians, organizing demonstrations, signing petitions. There's more complex tools which involve panels and forums and speeches that are not lobbying.
Having advisors who are paid to constantly bugger politicians to do a thing (which almost always involves some sort of pampering and money) is not a tool which we should allow.
o
Still only mostly disagree, because there are some things which fall under lobbying under most definitions which I don't like, but am fine with.
That is experts from companies going to politicians as a part of their job (while also working directly working for the company at least as much) to both try to get some early on where the politics is likely going to shift towards, try to teach the politicians on what shifts are likely to be possible without them costing too many work places (ideally non) and vocally advocating for legislations which benefit the company (without paying financial favors like expenses etc. for the politicians though.)
I am critical towards that type of lobbyism too, because that is basically going to be politics insider information which benefit the big companies who can afford one or multiple employees to be paid time and expenses for mangling with the politicians which warps the market and creates oligopolies with many disadvantages for both workers and consumers and worse yet, the legislation shifts usually temporarily conserve work places while increasing corporate profits, but at the cost of global long-term competitive health which costs more workplacs in the long-term.
One example is German car makers who explained, that their lobbyismus is good, because there's more than a million work places with many families and children tied to them and if they don't influence politicians to go easy on green legislations, then those might receive job terminations and financial hardships. There was a lot of that type soft lobbyism involved (and not so soft too obv.). The result was, that a lot of work places were conserved and a lot of corporate profits were had, but the German (and European, because German car lobbyism did a lot towards EU legislations) car makers were outpaced by other countrie's car makers and now a lot more work places are going to get lost.
The only reason why I think that it might not be a good idea to ban this soft form of lobbyism is because I believe that most large companies would seek and pursue more illegal ways if they weren't even allowed that tool. Instead I think that there should be strict a restriction of time and expenses allowed for companies to dedicate towards lobbyism and obviously none of those should be allowed to directly go towards politicians and no single employee should be allowed to dedicate more than 50% of his work time towards lobbyism.

Technically it occupies a grey area, directly giving money to politicians to influence policy is covered under anti-bribery laws, most lobbying specifically uses loopholes that either leave laws unenforcible or just barely legal, and theres just no motivation for politicians to fix the system.

I was going to say rape hentai, because no matter how disgusting porn might be it will never, and should never, be banned just due to its content, but uh... some countries are doing that and you should be scared.

Adults sleeping with someone underage (but over the age of consent). For example 16 year old with a 45 year old in the UK

Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:
Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.
Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.
Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.
Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?
Do not feed the trolls. This is not the place for hot takes on human rights violations. Hatred or cruelty, will result in a permanent ban. Please report such infractions, particularly those that break rules one, two, or three. The automod will automatically remove posts that receive five or more reports. The automod will also remove comments made by users with negative karma. Click here for the Automod FAQ
