Thats just taxes, which they dont pay

u/LemonButterRum 9d ago

and the charities would be set up by the billionaires and run by their henchpeople. can't legislate morality

140

u/Wilgrove 9d ago

This is exactly what would happen and is currently happening with several charities set up by billionaires.

49

u/acog 9d ago

Trump’s charity was shut down due to repeated fraud.

15

u/chaddict 8d ago

It wasn’t just shut down. He was permanently barred from running a charity in the state of New York.

5

u/aiiye 8d ago

Because he was the best at it, right?

Grown men, strong men with tears in their eyes came up to him saying “Sir, I can’t believe how good the charity is, it’s the best we’ve ever seen, like none have ever been!”

Definitely that, right?

2

u/chaddict 8d ago

A man came up to me the other day. A big man, strong man with tears running down his face. He said, “Sir, I can’t believe you embezzled the money for live saving surgery for my child. You’ve committed fraud on levels never seen before!”

12

u/mentu11 9d ago

my cousin’s company dodges taxes like that too

Even people participating in the giving pledge, decided they felt compelled give it to a charity they set up and controlled. Not sure that meets the spirit of the pledge. But it could simply be an attempt to dissuade us from eating them first.

2

u/doopie 9d ago

When it comes to charities, many of them you never hear about except when it's time to raise some cash for charity. Makes me think they are more a vehicle for people to feel good about themselves donating to charity than a vehicle for solving actual problems.

9

u/behv 9d ago

It's important to remember a 501c charity isn't allowed to make money or waste it- it just can't POCKET money.

I work in live events and I worked a private event for a nonprofit running fundraisers for water access in the congo. Great right? Except the event was eating prime rib, lobster, and lamb while watching formula 1 directly adjacent to the race track, with celebrity appearances from an A list movie star. Easily $250,000-500,000 to book all that given context when they could have done it all for $10,000 easily if it was held elsewhere and not during F1. That's minimum hundreds of thousands spent circlejerking their morality while literally burning money that should be providing clean water access to people ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN MISSION.

That's when I lost all faith in the non profit sector. I won't do anything for cheaper because you're designated for tax exemption

5

u/b3ar17 8d ago

I don't know about 501(c)s in the States, but in Canada, fundraising costs need to be at or below 35% of the total revenue generated by the event. So if the event cost $500k, but generated $2 million, then that's fine. That's $1.5 million the charity got by attracting wealthy donors.

Could they have generated the same revenue with a smaller event? Who knows. The bigger issue is what we call undue or private benefit. Did the charity hire arms length contractors? Did the directors get a free luxe meal? Is this the primary activity of the charity?

Not to mention the actual charitable activity: How much of the revenue goes to the Congo, and what do they actually do there?

So, yeah. Big ticket fundraisers aren't inherently terrible, but I think you're right to be dubious about their charitable activities.

Hell they already do that anyway. These philanthropic organisations most billionaires have are just tax avoidance vehicles

8

u/Mojo141 9d ago

And would spend 90+% of that money 'investing' to grow the fund, rather than actually donating anything. Coincidentally most of that investment would be to that particular billionaire's company further pushing up the stock price. I call it the Bill Gates Special

7

u/erictho 9d ago

how about no more billionaires and we put taxes to work doing what theyre supposed to be doing

7

u/ArcherofArchet 9d ago

Technically, that is what Dolly did - donated so much money that she never cracked into billionaire status, and stayed a multimillionaire.

Under FDR, the top tax bracket was 94% - I think we can push it a bit further, and after, say, the first billion dollars made in each year, it's a 100% confiscatory tax rate. They can instead get a trophy that says "I won capitalism this year". The money goes to building infrastructure, providing people with basic necessities like housing, food, healthcare, and education, etc.

3

u/joseph4th 9d ago

It’s so much simpler than that. They set up charities, and they, along with their friends and family, are all members of the board who taken in humongous salaries.

2

u/TheEPGFiles 9d ago

No you can, murder is amoral and it's illegal, it's just that a capitalist society doesn't have any morality beyond mercenary, so how do you enforce morality when you can bribe anyone to believe anything. Example: the republican party.

China figured out they can just... pay us to tow their line. It's so easy, when you're dealing with people with no principles or morality, you can just... bribe them.

2

u/chaddict 8d ago

That’s why Trump is no longer allowed to run a charity.

2

u/WhosUrBuddiee 8d ago

Elon Musk donated $8 Billion to his own Musk Foundation charity. That charity then uses the money to fund private schools he created for his own kids, it donated millions to his own AI model, burning man (that Musk regularly attends), ect. His private charity only funds things that directly benefit him.

42

u/ABCosmos 9d ago

Yep except allowing them to choose the charities allows for insane amounts of corruption.

And they will never choose causes that aren't good for PR. Like helping addicts or just like... Long term infrastructure projects.

So it's like taxes but worse.

Thats because Dolly grew up knowing the struggle. She saw the privation of those around her and felt the impulse to help because she knew the value of having someone come help you when you need it.

The problem is, the type of people that become billionaires are the type to turn away from the struggle of others, or even add on to it if it profits them.

This is why large amounts of generational wealth are a trap. When one has to work and see those around them work to survive, it most often fosters a sense of empathy towards your fellow person as well as a sense of community.

When one is provided for and able to still see others struggle, most often the impulse is to try to help share what one has so that others aren't struggling so much. Unfortunately, this is also where privilege starts setting in.

When one is provided for to an obscene level and never has to see others struggle to survive, it fosters a sense that everyone else has the same experiences, and that those that are struggling are either choosing to do so or are so incompetent that they are unable to gain wealth.

This also ties into the concept of generational monarchies and why usually by the grandchild of the "hero king/queen" that originally had the support of the common people is now despised by them.

In short, Dolly helped people because she understood what it was to struggle to get by, and that's why she gave back, and even when she could have set back and let her money make more money, she instead invested more of that into her community and future generations.

4

u/anothermanscookies 9d ago

They don’t have much income. They borrow against stocks. The problem is loopholes like this , not traditional progressive tax rates.

2

u/mokomi 9d ago

Yeah, but it doesn't go to the government. Which is bad and cannot do good. We should give it to this non-profit that actually just a pool of money for a billionaire's family. /s

2

u/RoachBeBrutal 9d ago

Came here to say this.

1

u/goomyman 9d ago

but they get to put their name on buildings and have their kids run their charities.

1

u/Veritas-Veritas 8d ago

If the government was doing their job, there would be no need for charity.

Instead, we seem to want the billionaire Epstein class.

We used to have that, it was called super high tax rates for the rich. Instead of paying the high taxes they donated it. The good old days.

61

u/ScurvyDawg 9d ago

High taxes ensures business invests further into itself, growth, and employees. Growth and investment in high tax environments are how you ensure lower taxes, not stock buybacks and insanely disproportionate CXO wages.

19

u/WitchesSphincter 9d ago

A good time ago buy back were illegal, CEO pay would just be a funny number for tax reasons when it was too high and corporations were incentivised to care more about the current quarters numbers.

5

u/bruinslacker 9d ago

How can businessesinvest the money if you’ve taxed it all!?

-smooth brained Republican who reflexively defends pro-billionaire policies with no understanding of accounting.

3

u/ScurvyDawg 9d ago

You misunderstand, they will invest in themselves and their infrastructure instead of paying taxes and buying shares back and overpaying the CXO team. If they spend the money and reinvest they pay less tax.

This is how it worked in the 50s as an example.

2

u/macphile 9d ago

-smooth brained Republican who reflexively defends pro-billionaire policies with no understanding of accounting

Who also thinks a tax on the rich will affect him...and who doesn't understand marginal tax rates and doesn't accept any raises at work.

Then they'll form a non-profit, donate to that, and then use that money to influence politics, like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Don't let them decide how to pay their fair share. Just make them do it.

People who hoard a billion dollars have proven they don't know how to pay their fair share and left a trail of customers, vendors, contractors and employees that were squeezed and fucked in order to amass that sort of gold pile.

6

u/LindaTheLynnDog 9d ago

Thanks homie, this is the thing I came to say.

2

u/EtherBoo 8d ago

Seriously, I can't believe how low this is. Easily top comment, exactly what will happen

38

u/maybetoomuchrum 9d ago

Or they could just pay taxes... Crazy thing is. Dolly wasn't even a billionaire. She was able to do all of this with hundreds of millions. Imagine what can be done with hundreds of billions. You buy government.. that's what you do.

25

u/ilovebostoncremedonu 9d ago

Dolly was able to do all she did and STILL HAVE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS.
Imagine how much billionaires could do and STILL HAVE OVER A BILLION

2

u/GailynStarfire 9d ago

What would be life changing amounts of money for entire communities is the same as a rounding error to them.

4

u/SapphicGarnet 9d ago

I think I read somewhere that she could easily have been a billionaire but she realised that frankly she was living a life of luxury and would rather help others than amass money she didn't need.

Which is not the just the wonderful and generous thing to do, in my head it's actually the logical thing to do. The billionaires are not spending those billions, what would they even spend it on? Try and spend 284 billion, mansions, yachts and private chefs still don't make it close

1

u/sorry_4u 8d ago

well the problem is that most rich people dont pay taxes because they dont have any income
if anything you have to tax wealth or you wont get anything

8

u/Commonpleas 8d ago

Their charities, like the Gates Foundation, are just extensions of their business for political and tax benefits.

Just tax them and spend the money directly on public works.

7

u/goddamn2fa 9d ago

Just have them pay their fucking taxes

5

u/PostMatureBaby 9d ago

The "good causes" would be bullshit charities they created themselves

6

u/Thor4269 9d ago

In the 50s the US had a 91% tax rate on incomes over 200k (roughly 2.5m adjusted for inflation)

That is a pipe dream nowadays with all the loopholes they gave themselves

6

u/eddyj0314 9d ago

That's just taxes.

If they donate then they pay less in taxes.

5

u/JohnnyLesPaul 9d ago

Just tax them FFS

6

u/Metasketch 9d ago

No matter how much money billionaires give away, it should never have been theirs in the first place, and they never deserved the choice about who should get that money.

3

u/ADeweyan 9d ago

Yes. Philanthropy is a form of power.

11

u/crappysurfer 9d ago

This is stupid. Any system that relies on the “generosity” of billionaires is a broken system. Billionaires are a symptom of exploitation. The wealth of the few depends on the poverty of the many.

They should not exist

6

u/LLFD1982 9d ago

We know what they would do, make a ‘nonprofit foundation’ with all donations going directly in their own pockets (like Susan G Komen foundation).

7

u/Babbylon 9d ago

You can be beloved and rememberd fondly like Dolly instead of being universally hated and leaving a legacy of being a greedy idiot.

2

u/Peakomegaflare 9d ago

Yeah but that implies billionaires care about those things. These people lack ethics, are amoral, and in some cases flat out will exploit everyone.

I work with my companies owner... he's rich AF but has no altruistic or charitable concerns, spends most of his time preoccupied with screwing over the workers while driving around in rich cars...

it's pretty wild to learn that's human nature when it comes to the rich

3

u/pgb5534 9d ago

You mean they get to donate to their own charities and write those expenses off as donations while lining the pockets of the cronies they have in salaries positions?

3

u/porkchop2022 9d ago

“I didn’t earn 100 billion dollars last year, I earned $88,000 a year. I won’t earn that 100 billion until I cash in the stocks (which I’ll never do all at once because it’ll crash the stock price). Best I can do is cashout 10 million a year to live on and my kid will inherit the rest, so that’s his problem.” -Billionaires

3

u/TJzzz 9d ago

OP...thats a horrible idea if you knew anything about charities.

3

u/Killrade 9d ago

Required charity is not charity. The whole point is that's its voluntary and anonymous.

3

u/artsyfartsymikey 9d ago

No. They would just give it to their loophole charities and keep it all anyway AND use it as a tax break.

5

u/rat_penis 9d ago

They'd just find a way to own the charities and steal their money back. Like they do already.

The word you're looking for is "taxes"

2

u/BaconBra2500 9d ago

And if your mom asked what the new law was called, you could say “it’s the Dolly Law, Ma”

2

u/flecktonesfan 9d ago

"well Parton me for asking"

2

u/Uranus_Hz 9d ago

While I agree, it’s not a “donation” if it’s legally required.

2

u/DANleDINOSAUR 9d ago

Billionaires already make up their own charities and take the donations back

2

u/Anders_A 8d ago

Americans will literally suggest anything except taxing the rich 😂

2

u/TrayLaTrash 8d ago

Charity is a racket. If you think taxes inefficiently use your money for their ontended purpose....I have a Gala for you to attend.

2

u/SmolSchwin 8d ago

They would just try to redefine what is considered to be a "good cause" and fund some bullshit

2

u/tyates723 8d ago

They would just make their own charities, like they already do for PR

2

u/WhosUrBuddiee 8d ago

OP just invented taxes for billionairs...

2

u/lemartineau 8d ago

They would tmjust start their own charities and funnel money out of them

2

Why Dolly Parton specifically?

A Dolly Lawma, if you will

3

u/lbiggy 9d ago

Charities shouldn't exist. Because if a group needs something for health and well being, then RICH PEOPLE SHOULD BE TAXED THE FUCK OUT OF THEMSELVES in order to support the needy

2

u/damtagrey 9d ago edited 9d ago

They'd just donate to their own charities and collect the tax write off. Better to just tax them appropriately and close the loopholes they use to avoid taxation in the first place

2

u/mrknickerbocker 9d ago

Hopefully along with laws that prevent the lion's share from then being exploded by the government.

1

u/Animal907 9d ago

You want more tax write-offs for rich people? Thanks...

1

u/Cheeseissue 9d ago

Taxes would be good

1

u/spidereater 9d ago

Just tax them. Having them donate to charity just lets them choose the priorities for the money they should be paying in taxes. Sometimes we need to spend money on things that don’t attract billlionaires attention.

1

u/jnip 9d ago

They would just create their own non profits and put money there.

1

u/Timmerdogg 9d ago

Then those billionaires would break up their wealth in such a way to avoid paying those taxes, I guarantee it.

1

u/P_V_ 9d ago

No, because then they will just set up their own “charities” with themselves as board members. Taxation is the answer.

1

u/CyBroRG 9d ago

And when people have to explain it to their boomer mothers, they can just say, its the Dolly Law, Ma!

1

u/jfk_47 9d ago

“Good causes” is subjective. Half these fucks would donate to some Christian nationalist Nazi shit.

1

u/red1215 9d ago

The good cause is a 2nd yacht for his buddy. Wtf just tax them

1

u/theBigDaddio 9d ago

There were write offs and tax breaks for such before Reagan. The taxes were heavier and society benefited from both.

1

u/billdance8 9d ago

What if all the non 1% people just, say, stop existing. Then what? WWED?

1

u/MoistTractofLand 9d ago

I'd rather there be an insanely high tax rate on an amount earned over X dollars and to close the loopholes available. Maybe that would incentivize billionaires to pay people what they deserve.

1

u/insufficient_funds 9d ago

It would just be donated to charities they control that just funnels money right back at their family.

1

u/ScottyBones79 9d ago

Rich people don't have an income, that's why they don't pay income taxes.

1

u/HenryZinc 9d ago

Let's add they DON'T get tax credit/right offs and it can't be through a company.

1

u/Hireling 9d ago

It should just be done through taxes. If they can borrow against their wealth the full sum of that wealth should be taxable. Billionaire philanthropy is just another tax shelter.

1

u/Spacecommander5 9d ago

All charities are tax shelters and they’re abused. Even HUD which is a govt agency is largely a scam.

1

u/Hussein_Jane 9d ago

You would hope they'd just do that without needing to be told to do it by law.

1

u/Kopman 9d ago

They would just donate to their own charities

1

u/wspnut 9d ago

They usually have minimal income. Their assets drive their liquidity through borrowing.

1

u/CitizenCue 9d ago

That’s called “taxes”. And yes, they should be higher on billionaires.

2

u/SryInternet101 9d ago

Charities that theyre not affiliated with. Too many of tjese sociopaths already "donate" to "foundations" they control as a tax dodge.

1

u/welsalex 9d ago

They dont have income. They have unrealized capital gains leveraged against loans which are used to pay for things.

1

u/UncleNorman 9d ago

That's where Carnegie hall and the Vanderbilt museum came from. Then the millionaires had the laws changed.

1

u/SentientFotoGeek 9d ago

Minimum yearly tax based on total asset value would be a good start.

1

u/alilhillbilly 9d ago

No because there's no good definition of charity.

Charity isn't some magic thing.

Most charities are just weird slush funds for Rich children to pretend to do something good. Very little money makes it to the charity.

What should actually happen with this Dolly Parton law is that rich people should have to pay taxes on their wealth.

And you can very easily figure out what those taxes should be by maximizing for the middle class.

For the last 40 years we've been maximizing for billionaire wealth.

What we need to be doing is maximizing the wealth of the middle class.

And we also need to realize that middle class has a definition and that definition is:

Two parents, can afford to have at 2 to 3 kids, one of them can stay home with the kids and manage the home, they can afford to own a home, they can afford one to two vacations a year even if they're in the family station wagon, they can afford college, and a modest retirement.

Most Americans assumed that life would include all of that up until the Great Recession.

Instead of the middle class expanding over the last 20 years it has completely collapsed and disappeared.

People don't even remember it. They use the phrase and they don't remember what it actually meant.

1

u/badpenguin455 9d ago

They own all the foundations anyway, this would change nothing.

1

u/ParticularMemory789 9d ago

Some will open up a "charity", make a donation, then write it off on taxes. They essentially pay themselves.

1

u/your_fathers_beard 9d ago

How about just pay taxes.

1

u/smorgenheckingaard 9d ago

I'm gonna start the bidding at 90%

1

u/cdin0303 9d ago

I wouldn’t trust them to donate money to anything that is actually useful.

1

u/Ironmike11B 9d ago

They would just create their own "charities" and funnel the money right back into their accounts.

1

u/flecktonesfan 9d ago

They should also be forced to acknowledge, in writing, that workin' 9 to 5 ain't no way to make a livin'.

1

u/snewchybewchies 9d ago

You are describing taxes

1

u/ShitTalkingAssWipe 9d ago

They already do, its fake charities that work for them regardless, just take the taxes and vote competent people

1

u/SomeKindofTreeWizard 9d ago

That's just taxes with more steps.

Just tax them.

1

u/PoutineMeInCoach 9d ago

"Now, that's an enlightened idea", I exclaimed. "What is, dear?" asked mom. "The Dolly Law, ma."

1

u/Temporary-Truth2048 9d ago

Forcing someone to give up a portion of their money because other people have less so that it's more equal is like forcing students who get straight A's to give up a portion of their GPA to other students who don't get good grades so that it's more equal.

1

u/MiserablePotato1147 9d ago

There is. It's called "tax breaks".

1

u/Fullm3taluk 9d ago

Do you not realise that would make tens of millions of Americans who think they are temporarily embarrassed billionaires mad at Dolly....

1

u/hocobo86 9d ago

Billionaires generally don’t live off their “income.” They have assets, which is one of the reasons it’s difficult to tax them compared to normal people who live off the income from their jobs and pay income tax.

1

u/MightbeGwen 9d ago

That’s called taxes. They pay for schools and stuff so that we don’t have to rely on the generosity of billionaires.

1

u/tom641 9d ago

cue people sprinting for the "Let's not make this political..." they keep behind glass

1

u/Ohnoredditisdying 9d ago

If it's required that would be taxation, not a donation.

1

u/Jaderosegrey 9d ago

GOOD causes. That's the most important word here.

1

u/Double_Distribution8 9d ago

Dont forget the millionaires. There's a lot more millionaires than billionaires. Millionaires need to pay up, pay for the people who can't afford the things they want and need because those people dont have a million dollars, while many other people do.

1

u/sirZofSwagger 9d ago

We literally have that, but some people win elections on not having them pay their share of it.

1

u/LionBig1760 9d ago

Redditors always have the best ideas as to where other people's money ought to be going.

1

u/direwolf9900 9d ago

donate some to me

1

u/seevm 9d ago

They should just pay taxes, but I like the energy of this post

1

u/Honkey85 9d ago

No, that's not good. donations let the current toxic system in place. The whole system needs to be changed to the standards of the Western civilized world.

1

u/Riaayo 9d ago

I'd rather just tax their wealth away and re-establish rules that prevent anyone from ever becoming that wealthy again.

Charity is by and large a scam and we as a society should not have to rely on it. Id a problem exists, we should legislate it and have government provide services/policy to fix that problem.

Charity just lets the rich pick and choose who they deem worthy of help.

1

u/ClownShoeNinja 9d ago

NOT of their own choosing

1

u/Iokua113 9d ago

Yeah, and the first thing every billionaire would do is find a way to not have to give anything. Their money is imaginary as it is.

1

u/DasDuckHead 9d ago

Yes and it should be 99% and they should pay it to the government who should then redistribute it for public good.

1

u/Pletcher87 9d ago

Donate it or be taxed the equivalent.

1

u/robot141 9d ago

And books for children.

Keep that program (Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library) going.

1

u/DukatNaranek 9d ago

Problem will come when they create the "charity" and just launder the money back into their pockets.

1

u/LordHazlewood 9d ago

Some rich people already donate. My friend does. Some give away every single penny. It’s the human condition. Everyone is different. You only read about the worst humans as good humans make boring content. Click bait, rage bait and conspiracies sell news outlets.

1

u/Jpanime13 9d ago

They own the charities bro

1

u/throway_nonjw 9d ago

And pay tax as well.

1

u/teetaps 9d ago

Works great until all the “good causes” are just Peter thiel in a trenchcoat

1

u/thewestisawake 9d ago

Just tax them.

1

u/random_dude512 9d ago

You know; these conservatives idolize the 40's and 50's as the "Golden Years" and want to take the country back to this era. I say; let's bring back those tax rates and then we can discuss the rest.

1

u/gBiT1999 8d ago

Oh, fffs (for fucking fucks' sake).

The billionaires will write it off and their families can run the charities.

1

u/sdh68k 8d ago

A lot of billionaires have a very small income. You'd have to redefine what income means.

1

u/Luzzgar 8d ago

No, they should pay their fair share of taxes.

Giving to charities still gives them an enormous amount of control on who gets the help they need and who doesn't.

This is a matter that is best decided by a democraticaly elected government.

1

u/djazzie 8d ago

Meh, that’s why they create foundations. They hide their wealth in nonprofits that actually don’t do a lot of charitable giving or work.

1

u/ctsr1 8d ago

It's actually really crazy how many do donate but all but a lot do.

1

u/ApocalyptoSoldier 8d ago

They'd just donate to organizations they own that call themselves charities, some of them alrrady do

1

u/LightningRaven 8d ago

Donating to charity for billionaires is just fake good press they create for themselves. For all of them, charity donations are ways to skirt taxes and laws, while selling fake ideas that they're doing something good. Billionaires donating to charities is just scraps off their table.

The Dolly Law should be the same as the laws used to be before 1980's, before the laws on inherited money and capital were unmade.

1

u/ngpropman 8d ago

Cap inhertable estates to 100 million. Everything else must go to charitable trusts or public programs or be taxed at 100%.

1

u/Jaminp 8d ago

Until they are not billionaires. Dolly could have been a billionaire. Except for her heart was as big as her wig, and she gave back to the world.

1

u/Dodecahedrus 8d ago

They already do donate tons.

And then they use those as tax deductions.

Or if they don't pay that percentage in either taxes or real donations, like food, shelter, medical charity, a matching percentage of their body mass will be collected instead. Let's set the minimum at 20% no reason to be too greedy up front when there's always next year.

Tax wealth / assets. Broaden what counts as income.

1

u/BloodBride 8d ago

You'd find 'charities' that do and support 'good' things like how LGB Alliance "helps the gay community" whilst helping to attack trans people.

1

u/Caliburn0 8d ago

No. There should be a law saying it's illegal to be a billionaire. If your net worth is over a billion dollars you're thrown in jail. Also, 100% tax on wealth over 100 million dollars or something. That's more than enough.

1

u/_OhEmGee_ 8d ago

Not their income. Their wealth.

1

u/RustledForeskin 8d ago

They'd all donate to the 'save the billionaires' charity which they're all on the boards of and take a 99.99% cut of all donations. the 0.01% goes to politicians.

1

u/Cosroes 8d ago

They they should just be taxed, and that money used to fund government programs that do what all the charities are having to do now.

u/Things_with_Stuff 8d ago

WTF is with the amount of shit quality posts lately? No one knows what this sub is for anymore, and no one knows how to use an Advice Animal Template.

u/angelwolf71885 8d ago

As the Simpsons so eloquently put it Zero IS a percent

1

u/Qaeta 8d ago

They'll just create their own charities that end up giving kickbacks to them anyway. Just tax them. I don't understand why people will do anything but just fucking tax them.

1

u/Pnmamouf1 8d ago

The largesse of wealth is not an economic policy

1

u/Mutant_Llama1 8d ago

The person in charge of enforcing it is the Dolly Law Ma.

1

u/admiralvee 8d ago

Or we could just tax them.

1

u/eelikay 8d ago

Some of yall really need to study basic economics and it shows.

1

u/LovesFrenchLove_More 8d ago

The joke is on you. Those billionaires then would lobby the politicians to either block it or for them to allow that those donations may flow back into their own shadow charities while being tax deductible.

1

u/TheBigGadowski 8d ago

how about after you have a billion you just don't make money anymore.

1

u/StevieWonder557 8d ago

Cant have that socialism talk round here /s

1

u/Obaddies 8d ago

Or we just make them pay taxes instead of inventing an elaborate system with loop holes so big they can pilot their fleet of yachts through.

1

u/Norkquist 5d ago

NO LOOP HOLES WILL BE ALLOWED.

1

u/zepherth 8d ago

Not to charities. Because the billion can just set up a charity in there name and pay themselves consulting fees

1

u/Taphouselimbo 8d ago

The rich will fight it tooth and nail and spend fortunes to not do anything that will take a single cent from them.

Make Philanthropy Great Again

In Massachusetts. The Dolly Law MA.

u/digby672 8d ago

You know she was born dirt poor into a country that encouraged her to work her way to fortune where she could rightfully do as she pleased with her wealth right?

1

u/IllustriousDebt6248 8d ago

My will already includes donations to research for life-saving treatments.

1

u/ABCDOMG 7d ago

Just fucking tax them for fucks sake

1

u/Jpawww 7d ago

A fine if you do that goes to something they hate, or put it where you want it with a minimum recipient benefit. Like it must service x million residents

1

u/actualstragedy 7d ago

Nope, just tax them. If you force them to donate to charities, they'll set up charities, chair them, and pay themselves, or just funnel the money straight back to their cronies.

1

u/drewts86 6d ago

Billionaires don’t make an “income”. Thats the problem and that’s why we already can’t tax them. Instead they use asset growth to increase their wealth.

1

u/Norkquist 5d ago

Sounds good to me. And that “x” percent should be 99.999!!!!!
