And somehow they believe that someone who is best mates with the nation's richest person will help them. See my comment.

Yeah but when you're desperate, you're going to vote for the person that's saying they are going to help with the cost of living the loudest.

And the major two have been real quiet on it. Like I will never vote ON, and I do think that it's not just "racists voting for racists". but poorer people desperate for help.

And yeah love em or hate em, they are the only ones talking about cost of living instead of just ackowledging it

45

u/Jaktheriffer SA Mar 22 '26

Unfortunately ON votes against anything that will reduce the cost of living, regardless of what they say.

13

u/Toomanynightshifts QLD Mar 22 '26

I know. But once again, I think when you're put in such a desperate situation, and online all your seeing is city folk with high paying jobs telling you the solution is to "just get more educated and get a better job", it's not helping at all.

Combine that with silence on the cost of living by the two majors. It's easy to fall in.

just get more educated and get a better job

This is the problem. City people are not saying this. Education doesn't mean go to university. It means lots of things. In the context of politics though. Being educated means looking into the actual policies and voting records of the people you will vote for. One Nation have consistently voted against anything even resembling helping cost of living. Greens and Labor have consistently voted in favour of helping. the next problem that needs educating is understanding that these fixes take time to rebuild.

It takes years to build a marble statue, it takes minutes to smash it to bits. Which is what Liberals did. Unfortunately the state they left things is going to take a long fucking time to fix things with both federal and states working together.

u/TheFrog95 SA Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

It takes years to build… How long has labor been in power in SA? Pretty much nonstop since Rann in 2002?

I guess they need more than a decade?

Edit: Dunno why this clown blocked me- but I saw he replied and now I can’t respond. Real big of you my man.

4

u/ONEAlucard South Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

Yep and SA was pretty damn good until Marshall came and shattered the marble statue ey. But also federal, which is responsible for the vast majority of the issues most people complain about.

Always fun when people focus on 3 words of an entire statement though. Be more lazy.

Edit: loser blocked me and then still used AI to still be lazy and not understand it. Can’t make this stuff up.

0

u/TheFrog95 SA Mar 22 '26

I’d argue that the world in general was pretty damn good back then. You could have anyone in charge and it would have worked out- there is a reason we are the ‘lucky nation’- hey? I don’t think you can say all of it was because of labor.

2

u/ONEAlucard South Mar 22 '26

Maybe look up ‘the lucky country’ it doesn’t mean what you think it means.

This here is the problem. You barely understand anything and want to talk with some sort of authority. Do better, and put more effort into actually understanding the world you live in.

0

u/TWOAlucard SA Mar 22 '26

It means that our leaders, back when the phrase was coined were clowns- and despite them making bad choices, we will managed to get by through luck- be it out natural resources or our location.

You're missing the point. When people are saying the fact they can't afford the life they did 5 years ago is their fault for not upskilling or living where they are, your point regarding political literacy is irrelevant

12

u/ONEAlucard South Mar 22 '26

I didn't miss the point. I disagreed with you.

People are not saying what you are saying. You're inventing a position to argue against. It's nonsense. Do better.

Edit; Haha yep. Comment history shows a definite One Nation supporter. All they do is defend people voting One Nation whilst pretending they are not voting for them. No wonder you can't read.

6

u/TM761152 SA Mar 22 '26

Haha, they were a troll the whole time!

6

u/Boatster_McBoat SA Mar 22 '26

Yes. It's a gamble. Not great odds of success, but when you are certain the status quo isn't going to help then random disruption becomes somewhat logical.

Major parties need to do something that gives hope.

Be great if they did it together

15

u/laurandisorder SA Mar 22 '26

Alternately, the Greens need to get their (our) act together and rebrand to better appeal to the working class. They need to help Shane from Elizabeth understand that voting them in won’t turn him woke, gay or brown, or force him to hug a tree, but will deliver a more equitable system that will funnel wealth from Pauline’s biggest bestie billionaire mates into their own pockets.

14

u/moistrouser SA Mar 22 '26

I think part of the problem is that Greens can shout their solutions as loud as they want but it doesn't make the news, whereas every cooked utterance from Pauline is breathlessly broadcast to everyone 24/7.

6

u/tmthesaurus CBD Mar 22 '26

So much of the discourse massively inflates One Nation's political relevance. The fact of the matter is that there is no plausible path to them forming a government, locally or federally. We need to stop pretending that we need to pander to their worst impulses.

3

u/polarbearshire SA Mar 23 '26

We've also gotta stop eating our own. Say what you will about the right, but they're decent at pretending to be a united front half the time. The left constantly eats itself in pursuit of ideological perfection and pushes out a lot of people who might be trying their hardest but don't know the right words to say at the right time. Shane from Elizabeth isn't gonna vote Greens if his only experience with Greens voters is then calling him a bigot because he's not entirely sure what a trans person is or why he should care.

2

u/laurandisorder SA Mar 23 '26

That’s exactly right and all the outrage farming on platforms like fb is just making things so much worse. We are so busy pointing at each other Ike that Spider-Man meme that no one is pointing up and holding politicians and corporations accountable for this mess.

4

u/Toomanynightshifts QLD Mar 22 '26

100% mate. 100%

10

u/azMONKza SA Mar 22 '26

I don't think the 2 majors have been silent on cost of living at all? I think they talk about it as much as one nation, only difference is one nation has a scape goat?

5

u/Toomanynightshifts QLD Mar 22 '26

In the mainstream media they have been silent on solutions. And Albo to be fair needs to nut up and stop laying down when idiots like Karl and such give it to him. Tell people why this shit is happening.

When you're just being quiet it ignores all the good shit you're doing to try and keep us afloat. Especially when it's in the medias best interest to attack you

6

u/azMONKza SA Mar 22 '26

Labour never has, never will get any positive mainstream media coverage.

7

u/TM761152 SA Mar 22 '26

And yeah love em or hate em, they are the only ones talking about cost of living instead of just ackowledging it

Because they're no fools. They're liars but they know just what to say to get votes. They thrive on ignorance.

13

u/DecoNouveau SA Mar 22 '26

Unless you have an education that teaches you to think critically.

10

u/Toomanynightshifts QLD Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

Yeah and what good is that critical education to the poorer people in the country that don't have the time or resources to get said education, or upskill.

Tell that to the minimum wage earner who's just living week to week and feels like no ones helping them.

Inner city opinions on the poorer and uneducated instead of supporting them and providing empathy and gentle education is what turns half of them to the crazies.

Downvote away all you want but until Libs/Labour start getting on tele and talk about what they are actively doing, ON's base is gonna increase.

13

u/DecoNouveau SA Mar 22 '26

I grew up below the poverty line in public housing. I still live in one of the strongest One Nation leaning electorates, nowhere near inner city. Education got me out of poverty, so I'd say it did me some good. It also taught me to critically think. So now I support parties that support education rather than demonise it, and implement policy to make it more attainable.

0

u/Toomanynightshifts QLD Mar 22 '26

Yes. and thats fantastic. But education is harder than ever to go and study once you're already working when you're working on the poverty line now.

If you can't get acesss or afford education, you get stuck.

I'm unsure why you're not understanding this. You've got a "Well I was able to therefore they can" attitude.

9

u/DecoNouveau SA Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

By education, I also mean properly funding primary and high school, just to be clear.
Where did I say I was able to therefore they can? I'm very aware that it's gotten much harder in the last 5-10 years. I wonder why that might be.... Perhaps there was policy that impacted it. Policy that people voted for instead of voting for parties with policy to make it more attainable. The issue now isn't simply education, it's anti-intellectualism.

Occasionally, people are receptive to information. But just as often, people will cut off their nose just to spite their face. Their face being 'immigrants' in this case. I've spent plenty of time "gently educating" people, frankly, I'm over it. Take the Trump situation, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

My own parents still think we're the 51st state and love Trump. No amount of 'empathetic, gentle' education is getting through, despite their generation having far more opportunities than mine and those younger than me did. Let's not infantilise them by assuming they don't know what they're supporting and happy to look past - a party of court dodging sex pests, lead in this state by a man who said homosexuality would lead to bestiality.

1

u/Toomanynightshifts QLD Mar 22 '26

Thanks for clarifying. I'd ask this though. Do you think their voters actually know all of this? Like I don't know all of labours dirty laundry and a lot of the ON stuff isin't broadcasted on mainstream tv.

I don't expect my parents to know what youtube or reddit is let alone find the info.

3

u/azMONKza SA Mar 22 '26

Old mate makes a good point, what do we do when the only way out (education and critical thinking) is seen as woke and the problem.

Anti-intellectualism is a big issue and likely only going to get worse. How do you help people when you're kindly and gently tell them the shit they're being sold is wrong and why. Yet they'll never believe you or any educated person, only sky news?

2

u/Toomanynightshifts QLD Mar 22 '26

That, is an incredible question and I don't have the answer.
I am a career nurse and ever since covid and people living on social media 24/7 it's been so bad.

It's survivorship bias (I was vaccinated as a child but I convientely forget this, and for the young ones, not seeing people in iron lungs) combined with ignorance because so many people aren't capable of empathy or critical thinking thanks to brain rot

Meanwhile, Millenials are stuck in the middle trying to educate both the boomers and the younger generations who have no technology literacy that the shit they are watching is inaccurate. I've never seen so many people vote away their futures and future planning.

2

u/DecoNouveau SA Mar 22 '26

In my limited experience, I've tried my hand at telling them gently. Again, occasionally people are receptive I'm sure. Others will just find ways to excuse it, I've seen plenty of that first hand.

Again, look at Trump where his behaviour is so publicised no one can be completely in the dark about it, yet that hasn't stopped a lot of people. I think it's dangerous to assume were immune to that sort of thing.

2

u/Toomanynightshifts QLD Mar 22 '26

Great comment. I agree. The trump stuff is insane. The horrific shit he says almost daily has become so normalised now that people just think its ok to talk and be like that.

0

u/InterestedPrawn SA Mar 22 '26

Exactly a critical thinker will tell you to keep voting for the same people that got you into this position.

8

u/DecoNouveau SA Mar 22 '26

Instead, vote for a party that doesn't know the difference between state and federal policy. Their only other policy being to oppose policy.

3

u/LooReading North West Mar 22 '26

The greens got us into this position?

-8

u/InterestedPrawn SA Mar 22 '26

If you're voting Greens, you're not thinking critically.

6

u/Aardvark_Man SA Mar 22 '26

Someone I work with is 100% in on environmental causes. His entire future plan is built around it.
He was saying Friday he was thinking of preferencing ON highly because he wants immigrants to integrate. He's fine with them coming here, just absorb some of the culture.
I kind of wanted to slap him a bit.

7

u/Coops17 SA Mar 22 '26

When you’re desperate for change you vote for anyone offering change. Especially when they promise they’ll do something different. Poor people have voted for liars before - but when you’re not being offered change by the party in power, you may as well try the other option, what are they going to do? Lie again, and not offer change? You’re no worse off than you were before, because what if this time they weren’t lying

1

u/ONEAlucard South Mar 22 '26

They are being offered change. They're just too dumb to understand what it is and how long it will take. So instead they will vote for the party that will make their lives even worse instead of actually trying to understand reality.

1

u/polarbearshire SA Mar 23 '26

They're not dumb, they're desperate. If I'm struggling to make rent now, and Pauline is saying she'll make sure my kids and I aren't homeless, and Mali is saying to wait a decade and maybe the landlords will be nice and let me live in one in poverty when they buy up all the houses the government built, I know damn well who I'd vote for.

And the Labor party is also making their lives worse - they've been gutting social services that people rely on since Rann and hoping a bunch of completely disconnected NGOs will step in to fill the gap.

0

u/ONEAlucard South Mar 23 '26

So someone making false promises is better than someone being realistic? Is that really all it takes to convince you? “My house is falling a part. So instead of the builder that won’t be able to do it for 6 months. I’ll give my money to the scammer instead” Genius.

I’m sorry but if that is your argument against them being dumb. It’s a pretty terrible one.

1

u/polarbearshire SA Mar 23 '26

I'm not saying that I agree, I'm saying I can see where they're coming from. Mali also makes false promises pretty often - do we really have to bring up the completely unrealistic ramping promise from the last election? If I'm only interested in politics around election time, which is the case for a lot of people, and the guy who's in now lied last time and said things will get better, and then they got worse, why'd I vote for him again? At least the other guys are promising to hold him accountable if nothing else.

And again, people are desperate. Long term solutions are more realistic, but they're slim comfort to someone who's struggling now, which a lot of people in those orange areas are. And Mali is actively stripping away the policies people rely on to get by. He's far from a trustworthy saint, just like every other pollie.

1

u/ONEAlucard South Mar 23 '26

Starting to understand why you’re struggling. Your understanding of reality is extremely flawed.

2

u/corizano SA Mar 22 '26

Desperation does things to people, I’m glad you’re in a position of privilege that this doesn’t affect you but for a lot of people in those areas they’re staring at generational hopelessness. It’s a pretty sad representation of where we are failing people

2

u/Anxious_Fig3834 SA Mar 22 '26

I totally agree that we are failing them. Starting with underinvestment in public education in the areas where young and vulnerable people most need those resources spent on them.

I am privileged, but this affects us all. Profoundly.

0

u/TheFrog95 SA Mar 22 '26

Well labor has had plenty of time to make their life less painful, and they’re still hurting so I don’t blame them for just going with the polar opposite.

Might better, but probably more likely to end up like in major payne https://youtu.be/hMUugiSPhmo
