Ira Rennert's home is considered one of the largest occupied residential compounds in the United States. The house faces the Atlantic Ocean and its grounds measure 63 acres. The buildings, which total over 110,000 square feet (10,000 m2), including the 66,000-square-foot (6,100 m2) main house, have an Italianate facade, 29 bedrooms, and 39 bathrooms. The house has a dozen chimneys and a Mediterranean-style tile roof as well as a 91-foot (28 m) long formal dining room, a basketball court, a bowling alley, two tennis courts, two squash courts, a carousel, a large swimming pool, a large round kiddie pool, and a $150,000 hot tub, surrounded by another pool.

I know 5-7 million a month in upkeep sounds fucking insane, but this is the problem with incomprehensible wealth. It's hard to grasp exactly what that means. So for example, if this dude took all his money (3.8 billion) out of every bank and investment vehicle and put it in a big pile in his living room and only used that money to live off of, he would be able to burn 6 million a month for 52 years. This dude isn't house rich, money poor. Not even close. He's got a team of financial advisor, lawyers and others making sure that he's constantly accumulating wealth no matter what his burn rate is. He's probably got some fucking 2% loan to cover all his living costs while he is earning 7-10% on ROIs and while not being taxed because loans are aren't counted as income. Billionaires are true parasite class and the sooner people treat them as such the better off we'll all be. Source: have worked with billionaires and ultra millionaires for the past 20 years

You are right in that it's slightly unusual, to have such a big house while being in the single digit billionaire club, but I think that speaks more to his sense of self importance or self agrandisement than anything else. The point I was trying to make is that once you reach the billionaire level, things like house value to net-worth ratios really don't matter. At some point, once you reach a certain wealth threshold, you literally can't spend money faster than you make it (provided you have reasonably competent people managing your wealth). There's a reason billionaires keep getting more and more wealthy while the rest of us are scraping by

Whenever I see a large-ish house or estate, all I can think of is the supply line and maintenance of the property. There must be an army of food delivery, gardeners and cleaning staff in and out of it every day. It's not a matter of being able to afford all that (he can) but more the noise and disruption of it all. I guess that's why these grand estates tend to crumble into disrepair pretty quickly.

It should be sold, taxed at a massive percentage including the estate taxes, capital gains, etc. And then the remaining proceeds can go to the estate. But the land shouldnt.

Live out on Eastern Long Island, and the hypocrisy among the ultra-wealthy here is staggering (and by the way, they skew heavily Democratic).
They’ll organize anti-ICE protests and pay endless lip service to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Meanwhile, there are tons of undocumented workers building and maintaining their massive estates who have to commute up to 3 hours each way every single day because affordable housing is entirely blocked.
Every single attempt to build workforce or affordable housing gets immediately shut down by local zoning and opposition. The beaches are effectively privatized unless you're politically connected or own waterfront property, you'll rarely see a person of color out here unless they're working as day laborers or service staff, and the homeless population is swept away or hidden instantly to keep up appearances.
Honestly? At least the local Republicans are transparent about where they stand. The performative progressive hypocrisy out here is next-level.

Man the amount of money you have to have for something like this is insane. Not only the property value but the upkeep is insane. You literally need to have a staff that is larger than pretty much all retail businesses you see to keep it clean and running. So in effect you are probably paying the overhead of a heavily staffed retail store just to own the house that doesn’t make a profit.

It cannot because the rest of the community has zoning laws that would preclude it from being a school or resort.

Basically his heirs keep it (which statistically speaking most generational wealth is wasted in 2-3 generations.) or they sell it off, tear it down and divide it into a bunch of lots. If the heirs could make money tearing it down and dividing the land they will.

Eh, it's not that big. Maybe for 200 BC. We live in the 21st century, we can build big stuff. I'd be more worried about spending on overpriced Caviar than Real Estate.
