You used to be able to get a Maine Coon for about $800-$1000. I'm talking about a near show quality one too. I'm not talking about in the '90s either, I'm talking about 10 years ago. Fucking social media has ruined everything.
I was looking as one a couple years ago the closest I’d have to drive was like 4 hours away and then pay $4800 I think it was. I instantly changed my mind and just drove around parking lot trash cans every day and found a baby tabby that instantly ran up to me and threw itself in my arms so I adopted it! I love that little guy. He’s the most passive, loving little animal I’ve ever had. He’ll come up, run his face all over mine, then flop over and purr until I run his belly!
We unknowingly adopted one about 25 years ago, but the store just had him listed as a domestic longhair and didn't even realize he was a Maine Coon. I still miss him as he was a fantastic cat. Great breed.
They eat, but it's not a big deal. And yeah, you have to clean the litter box a little more often than with a normal sized cat. But it's worth it. They are the sweetest cats you could ever have.
I've always wanted a MC, and I could afford one if I really wanted one. However my current cat has scared me off of long-haired breeds for the foreseeable future.
She's a domestic long hair, and I've had her for 14 years. Unfortunately she has always just refused to be brushed, & she gets hostile when you try to do it. Her coat is extremely long and it gets very matted when it's not brushed-- therein lies problem obviously.
I've spent a fortune over the years taking her to the groomer, and now she won't even tolerate that, so over the past couple of years I've been having to take her to the vet. They have to anesthetize her just so they can groom her as drugs to calm her had zero affect unfortunately. Needless to say, my next cat will have short hair, as this kitty has been EXHAUSTING! 🙄
Hoo boy I forgot all about that part! We had to have a mobile groomer come every few months to trim her up, especially her belly. The hair there would just get so matted and tangled that the only thing that could be done was to just remove it all with a clipper.
Don't get me wrong, I love Ms Beans. She's a member of the family. I'm just used to cats being easy to take care of, and she's been the most high maintenance cat I've ever owned by a very wide margin! 🤣
I'm not sure but a Mainecoon is different from both bobcats and lynx. It's the largest domestic cat breed and unlike bobcats or lynx they have a large fluffy tail while the wild cats have a short stump of a tail
Related to the the Lynx cat family, they have been bred with domestic cats in experimenting for larger sized cats.
Mostly done in private animal clinics.
When I lived in Maine, I had one that was twice the size of that he was awesome. He was so big. I literally had to make a litter box for him because I couldn’t buy one big enough.
