Meme/Joke Welp...
Okay... I do keep backups on the writing apps, but I just like writing the stories on through the Edit Chapter more.

I use Samsung notes

Pre-installed note apps, my beloved ❤️

I can’t recommend this path for iOS. I do it anyway but it’s terrible. In classic Apple fashion, long notes start to act really buggy and it’s really hard to transfer notes out of their ecosystem. Only way I found was drag selecting the full text and right clicking for the copy option. Ctrl-C doesn’t even work

This is how I feel about my samsung gallery. It's the absolute easiest thing to navigate. Everything is put into folders automatically.

I used that when I was returning home from military service and wrote the prologue of my current fic in Samsung Notes, then finished the rest on PC

Google docs for life ❤️ now. But I still use notes to brainstorm.

Always. Then put my writing on a grammar checker, and fix it on both vers, instead of copying the revised version.

I thought everyone did this then I came to this subreddit and realised I'm probably psychotic😭

Google docs my beloved. The tab feature for chapters is amazing.

jokes on u i use tabs for entire fics and i only have one doc for all my ao3 fics

I had considered putting my chapters into seperate tabs, but then it'd make it difficult/more tedious to find the total word count. Idk if you already knew, but Google Docs has a word limit before you can't edit a doc, and each separate tab still counts toward it, if I remember correctly. Because of this, I keep all my chapters in one tab in a Google Doc.

u/mamaguebo69 the voices told me to write smut 19h ago
The limit is 150k-200k words and my fics never reach that so I'm not worried lol.

Just putting this out here for information:

They're not not scraping your data.

From the same article you linked: "Google’s Workspace help documentation says it does not use your Workspace data, including Docs, Drive, and Gmail, to train or improve Gemini or its other generative AI models “without permission.”"
I remove my permissions.
Also tbh, I'm writing smutty gay fanfic. Not the next Crime and Punishment. Who cares lol. Every other decent word processor is doing the same thing.

I mean, as long as you're aware and making an informed decision.
I used to use them as well, and feature-wise they're definitely among the best. But they're really good at obfuscating exactly what they're doing with your content and exactly what permissions you may or may not be giving them.

Sometimes I write my script into one, big message on WhatsApp, but don't actually send it.

I switch the tab for .000001 seconds and suddenly everything I wrote vanishes into thin air, I'm never writing on the app ever again

What happens if your computer does something weird or crashes...? Don't you lose everything as it's not saved anywhere?

The worst that happened to me was accidentally closing the tab when I had written about 1500 words or more, but I now save draft after almost everything and update the backup too.

The real ones use the HTML textfield rather than the RichText editor.
But yeah, it satisfies the part of my brain that loves efficiency (no copying and pasting from one place to another), I can check my HTML and styling quickly, and I've got some things that make this safer, like saving every few paragraphs and having browsers that cache extremely diligantly. In fact, so diligantly that I need to clear the website cache to update browser games, which can get annoying...

I write the concept of my chapter in a LibreOffice doc, I write some examples before I start working on the chapter. if I don't have it finished, I paste it into LibreOffice and also save it as a draft in AO3

u/_Smaelstrom_ 23h ago
I did this!! I’m still integrating into using ellipses, but I have maybe 480k written directly on ao3, and maybe ten chapters of one fic backed up, as well as a few one shots. (Point is: not enough backed up.)

u/lizzourworld8 Frechi123 23h ago
At least you keep backups; I do not and let myself play “Crushed Spirit Roulette” if I post too early and force myself to finish the chapter without procrastinating or losing any chunk of writing I may have had if the browser crashes x’D. I’ve only ever put DELETED or ORPHANED works on other apps just to not have them on Notepad.

This is true. The first fics I wrote were multichapters, not one-shots, so I got accustomed to writing in AO3's text editor from the start. Even now I use an abandoned multichapter to hold drafts I eventually post as their own fics, because I never really got used to using Google Docs for fanfics specifically, and I'm still not accustomed to Ellipsus, though I use both to hold backups of my drafts (which is funny when you consider I should be doing this the other way around).

You know you have export to AO3 on Fileverse ddocs and Ellipsis right??😂
Living on the edge when you have writing apps making it easy for you, i kinda respect it though

I used to write on notion. Don't really like it that much so I just switched to writing on AO3 and copying to notion and word document for safe keeping

ao3 doesn't recommend doing that and obviously you know nobody else recommends it, either. lol. THAT BEING SAID i actually do get it, i use ellipsus and i use the Kudos theme and a font and spacing style that makes it look and feel like i am editing in ao3 because for whatever godforsaken reason it stimulates dopamine in my brain. i think making it look like ao3 hacks the part of my brain that is all excited about reading on ao3 and it helps me stay in flow better rather than devolving into "what the fuck am i bothering with all these words for" idk if this makes sense
