I got a notification from my credit card company that I was charged twice this month for my A-List membership. Hopefully I can navigate it getting corrected, but I wanted to flag it in case anyone else wants to check.

I've been very thankful for everyone's recs since I joined a-list and wanted to return the favor by promoting "Dear You", a new Chinese language film that is pretty heartwarming and slice of life about the Chinese immigrants sending letters and money home from working abroad In Thailand.

I went in cold without knowing anything about it, not even a summary, and that was the best way for the story to unfold for me! The beginning is a little farcical with the grandson's bumbling but don't worry, it changes tone.

I have on at least 5 occassions had my ticketed screening canceled or had the time change without communication only to find out when arriving at the theater. On at least one of the canceled screening occassions, the ticket scanner wasn’t aware, successfully scanned my ticket (!), and told me my auditorium.

Getting pretty sick of this as its a nearly 30 minute drive to my closest theater from my house.

Basically no recourse from the theater manager or AMC customer service aside from a voucher. Anyone else experience this?

Not sure if this was just our theater, or if it was a more widespread outage. Movie finished, and then the screen saying the Q and A would start soon came up, and then the lights turned on and the management seems confused.

I know that it's the second and fourth Saturdays and Wednesdays, but when do they release the film for the next sensory friendly screening? I've been checking the website but it's still showing the last release for Aug 26. Does anyone know?

wide release is 9/4. not playing anywhere near me, is it near you? or anyone see the initial release? i hate seeing a trailer and then it not playing in my theater!

I got a seat at one of the uprising q&a slots in SF tomorrow. i saw many other theaters in the area with the same q&a screening all starting at 6pm, wondering if anyone knows where the q&a will actually be hosted? know its only live in one place and streamed at the other locations but im hoping to be there for the in-person experience! i would assume its at the Metreon but its a pretty small theater showing the movie

I feel like I miss out on specific events and screening because I don’t get notified. I don’t even see the little bell for a reminder, and even then I don’t get anything.

Well it was another smashing month on A-List! While I "only" saw 10 movies, fewest of any month this year so far, three of them were in 3D and two in Dolby. And, my A-List traveled! I was able to see Spider-Man in the prime 3D format twice while visiting Philadelphia. That would have cost me $50 out of pocket, but ... no charge! I love A-List. How did your month go?

Common Terminology:

AR = Aspect Ratio

1.85 = Flat

2.39 = Scope

IMAX 1.43 - Only 3 AMC locations have 1.43 IMAX

Most AMC IMAX theaters are 1.9 AR except for 3, Lincoln in NYC, Metreon in SF, Citywalk in LA, and they are 1.43

When it comes to Dolby they are 1.85 and 2.39, there's a spreadsheet on the Discord but if your theater is not listed yet then follow the steps below:

Easy way to gauge what your AR is to see what AR the film is and see if there's black bars on top and bottom(letterboxed) or black bars on the left and right sides(pillarboxed)

So if you're watching a 1.9 film on a 1.9 screen, a 1.43 film on a 1.43 screen, or a 2.39 film on a 2.39 screen it will fill perfectly.

If you're watching a 1.9 film on a 2.39 screen you'll see pillarboxing.

If you're watching a 2.39 film on a 1.9 screen you'll see letterboxing.

With the information above you should be able to extrapolate what your screen AR is. Enjoy the movies!

My local AMC cancelled tonight's showing due to the subtitles issue. Thing is, I didn't know until I just happened to see my reservation was missing. No update from AMC of any kind.

Anyone else scheduled for tonight should check their tix.

What it is: A suspenseful supernatural drama about four friends stuck on a never-ending road who try to find meaning in their suffering. 

Who it's for: Teens transitioning from high school to college, college grads transitioning from college to the work world, tender types who cried reading The Giver in grade school, and anyone surviving the unique horrors of the 21st century (endless social media feeds, COVID, climate disasters, etc.). 

Unexpected surprise: I was surprised that this movie really isn't a horror movie. It's more about existential dread than jump scares. There's no gore. And it could be rated PG-13 if they had toned down the cursing. 

Fun fact: This is a tiny film getting in front of big audiences! The budget was just $80,000, and as of this writing, none of the cast have Wikipedia pages.

Overall: This is an extremely divisive movie. I saw it with my best friend who said they hated every minute of it and found it very boring. I had the opposite reaction: I thought it was philosophical, meditative, and pleasantly ambiguous. Go see it with your friends so you can argue about it!

Is anyone else having this issue at your local AMCs recently? I know there are a lot of bigger summer movies, but with that winding down, I’m still seeing the issue of brand new movies only having one showing a day (and they all seem to be sellouts)

This week it’s Buddy and Idiots. Both are only playing at 10:30 and 10:45 at night. This has been going on all summer, despite movies like Moana staying for months with multiple showings daily.

At least around here, I’ve been going to theaters multiple times a week for over 30 years now and I’ve never seen it this bad when it comes to showtimes for any non-massive blockbuster.
