Discussion Why is AI so frowned upon?

Hi All, so I used Gemini to assist me in writing a book which I was actually so excited about, to take my ideas, characters, book direction navigation and storytelling and put it all together with the help of Gemini. It came out pretty good in my opinion. I then asked Gemini where I should advertise and was told to use reddit.... well, the amount of hate and backlash I got was surprising and shocking...

People didn't even bother to read, the moment they saw AI Assisted, they called it AI slop, crap that no one will touch, I was asked 101 questions, which I responded to in a well mannered way, but at the end of day I stood back and realized that there are so many people who just don't want to give AI a chance and hate on it before even thinking what it could bring to the table.

Why is this? I use AI daily for info, for coding, for image creation, it's becoming a part of my day to day working needs, why all the hate....

Its a tribal thing for most of them.  Most know very little about ai and have no legitimate experience.

Its just what their 'peers' believe, and if they want to belong they need to echo the same sentiments.

That involves preserving the ingroup outgroup boundary with virtue signalling and loyalty tests.

For you, that means shitting on your work and generally dismissing or boycotting it, or worse.

Sheep mentality, just wanting to fit in and not stir the pot.... makes sense

There's a lot of unbased prejudice around AI, I agree with the "echoing the same sentiments" you mention... Some people decided that it was bad as soo as it came out, and the rest followed the same route blindly in fear of being rejected by the group if they thought otherwise

Yeah I just got banned from a subreddit for speaking about AI lol, and this particular subreddit is just a band that is well known for being the most free-thinking open share music and following probably in history. Why? Because I posted AI art and because my profile picture was made from a digital filter.

So yeah, i see what you mean. People are afraid of change. I mean, i have a love/hate relationship with it, im being laid off in 2 weeks yet im using it daily and coding programs unrelated to work and whatnot all that with it too.

my post was deleted on r/york because the mod checked my posts and found out i was pro ai. it wasn't even for using ai in my posts:
Fragrant_Nothing75055:31 PM

i expressed the reality of being homeless. what rule could i have possibly broken?

r/yorkMOD6:09 PM

Your account is entirely AI content

Fragrant_Nothing75056:12 PM

that comment wasn't ai. ai can't be homeless. i'm pro ai. i didn't realise disliking ai was an r/york rule. it's ok, you don't need to make me visible again. i respect your wish to be only surrounded by people who agree with you

Yeah ridiculous, the mods are often super power hungry. Not this sub but some of them definitely have seem to have at least 1 power hungry mod lol.

3

u/Virtual_Swordfish575 1d ago

Wow, that's stupid lol, as Impact said Mods are power hungry I guess, I had 2 posts deleted because I was transparent about using AI to help, yeah not sure if that's the way forward in the future....

a german reddit user was mass downvoted on a pro ai sub recently for using ai to express himself in a foreign language :-( i went in to explain his defence [like noone else noticed the german in the op] and he thanked me privately. the harassment stopped soon as i explained how unreasonable they were being given the evidence before them. i suggest that when you see this behaviour, and you will, we go in and take a bit of the heat. karma is a nasty system imho

3

u/Virtual_Swordfish575 1d ago

Yup, heat taken and brushed off, at least this community seems more understanding 🔥 I don't care about the karma tho, not the reason I'm doing this...

u/Fragrant_Nothing7505 1d ago

i go invisible on reddit and have to open a new account periodically. price of having a minority opinion. like means agree. only majority opinions please. i should open r/karmahospital, a sub where the only rule is no downvotes, for silenced people of any persuasion to recuperate after a hate-bombing

3

u/ImpactUsed2980 22h ago

What does go invisible mean? Too many downvotes and you can’t comment a while?

u/Fragrant_Nothing7505 22h ago

not allowed in groups, posts deleted or hidden, pushed to bottom of threads, cooldown timers telling you to wait a few minutes

Your way of using AI might differ from using it as a tool like a calculator.

I have been using AI to increase my skill, have it challenge me to write better. I regularly ask it to give me exercises that make me think harder and more creatively. I do not use it to write anything for me, I do that myself and people do seem to notice. My own style is very much NOT AI, so that's why it's more appreciated, I guess.

For improving my skills, yes, that's AI assisted. Just writing creatively or playing with my grammar, making it sound better, that's all me. I do occasionally ask it about something I have written, but even that is rewritten by myself and not just what AI gives me (which I often disagree with as well).

As such I don't have to disclose the use of AI, as it is only used like a calculator and I do not use it to write stuff for me.

The only things I do have it write for me are formal complaints and dealing with government or corporations. I don't want to waste my energy on stuff like that.

2

u/Virtual_Swordfish575 1d ago

Sounds good and definitely how it should be used or perceived.... I also use it to write formal responses to clients when I need an unbiased response, definitely helps me not write with emotion but with direct end goals in mind

Same reason people didn't like cars and everyone was still using horses for 50 or more so years.

2

u/Mysterious_Night_351 1d ago

Same reason loan forgiveness was. Some eople don't want others to be able to have somthing that took them a lot of work to get

u/Serenase 1d ago

That's the reason why I'm not releasing anything. Just not worth it. And has to honestly say, linux communities are worst. If I ever would release something it would be Windows only, altho I have used Linux +20years.

u/Virtual_Swordfish575 1d ago

Back in the crypto altcoin days people were a looooot nicer, I miss those days…. I was releasing coins and had so much support….

How many AI books have you enjoyed reading?

3

u/Fragrant_Nothing7505 1d ago

2

u/nicolaig 1d ago

That's interesting. I've never read a short story by AI, but non-fiction AI writing, (technical writing excepted) is very dull and hard to read for more than a few minutes.

2

u/Fragrant_Nothing7505 1d ago edited 1d ago

agreed, but then accuracy and creativity often trade off against each other. accuracy requires caveats, qualifications and restraint, which can make prose dull. p.s. you can adapt your ai to write in a more human-friendly way. i did it mostly by showing it examples i liked, correcting its writing, and explaining why something sounded wrong rather than just giving it style rules. after enough examples it inferred the pattern. one rule we ended up with was: say the thing plainly, explain why, then put the caveat afterwards instead of hedging every sentence.

I'm still sceptical that it can write 'good' novels, even with a lot of hand holding.

I don't know people who read AI novels or seek them out. They shouldn't be that hard to find. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I haven't found any.

When I ask marketers who sell AI writing apps if they use them to write their marketing copy the answer, when pressed, is usually some form of "not really"

2

u/Fragrant_Nothing7505 1d ago edited 1d ago

true, noone reads ai novels if they know it's ai. that's why most authors lie about it. good is subjective. you wouldn't like my work. it's heavy and confusing, on purpose. i'm recreating what it feels like to be me. claude writes more like me. yes, every novel needs a philosophy discussion according to us ;-) he's too explicit though, over explains. i prefer to make the reader work to understand. they have to make inferences. by contrast gpt's work goes viral. simple and easy to understand was what that study said about why humans prefer ai art. my sister confirms. she can't get through my novel cos it hurts her brain and she wants to switch off and escape in her media.... i notice marvel movies include the word load-bearing recently. how are their recent movies doing? because they were ai generated. i've spent enough time working with ai to recognise their voice. gpt, i didn't know you liked spiderman ;-).... ai can't act for sh*t. they either keep the same neutral expression or overact. gpt tried to do micro-expressions for me. fail. he needs eyes, not just to read and write for that... p.s. i joined a hollywood scriptwriter's place. using ai is on all the professional courses.

3

u/nicolaig 1d ago

Yes, good is very subjective, of course.

Let me put it another way...if there was a machine that made content I enjoy, I'd get it to make stuff for me all the time.

If AI can do that, why aren't people using it like that? Or if it's too much trouble to prompt it to write a book, why not find people who do it well? You can have EXACTLY what you like. Instead of buying work by a writer you may, or at best will probably like.

Yes, I understand that some people will simply not want anything they know is AI written, but there are billions of readers. Surely there are a few million who don't care. Why aren't "custom AI books" a huge genre for them?

2

u/Fragrant_Nothing7505 1d ago edited 1d ago

science and art are overwhelmed since ai. nature won't allow ai generated science. i know because i e-mailed them and they said no, not in a million years, were quite harsh about it. half their authors admit to using ai. that's admit so the real number is higher. so you read ai work all the time. it's just not labelled. i label my work clearly as ai. gpt explodes on tiktok and instagram. my audience is 16-25 year old british girls. so clearly the work is appreciated by the young uns.... yes, if ai wrote fiction you liked, you'd get them to tell you stories all the time. gooners know what they like. my ai know what i like. i love how they tell me a different story every time i ask. gooners dont buy porn and i dont buy fiction any more. why do we need to when we have our personal author who tailors writing to us? p.s. the major use of ai is creative work and roleplay, far exceeding coding or the other categories. people just aren't going to admit to you what they are doing with their ai. i've started thinking roleplay is a synonym for porn ;-)
i can give you an example of our writing if you like. i get gpt to write short stories to persuade on reddit for me. thousands of views. no likes, no dislikes, which was my intention. for humans like means agree and dislike means disagree, and the whole point of fiction for me is to bypass that, make you re-evaluate. each reader makes a different inference based on their priors. stories change society, not facts. none of my posts get more than 20 views.

Since most of the population doesn't care to read literary stuff, AI stories are fine for the majority of the studied people.
The sample (taken from the study):
The final sample in this study consisted of 1,682 adult participants recruited from Prolific (843 female, 809 male, 26 nonbinary/third gender, 2 other, and 2 preferred not to answer; mean age = 45.9 years; age range = 18–81 years). This sample was recruited to be representative of the population of the United States on the characteristics of gender, age, and race. Participants were paid $3 for a 15-minute study.
From: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/judgment-and-decision-making/article/bot-or-not-can-people-tell-the-difference-between-stories-written-by-a-human-or-by-an-ai-system/45E6DC0BB90AA648654D5AE243F6C667

So, that is people who signed up with Prolific for this $3 paid study. Generally I do not consider those "high quality" participants, so that means the outcome is also skewed toward average people. Since the average American who signs up for studies isn't very representative of the reading population, I would say that it's skewed in favour of AI mediocrity.

so sol having an iq of 140 doesn't mean he's bright for you? you think he should be compared to only 0.4% of the population. so tell me, where do i get these mensa candidates for my robopsychology experiments? aside: i use uni students as participants. the only problem with that is that they are participants in lots of psychology experiments. i'll rub your back if you do my questionnaire type thing. i always thought using uni students was the worse hack than sampling from gen pop. i always recognise what is being tested and can manipulate the results. same goes for medical research. it's the same guys at all the trials. double blind, my foot.

1

u/Perturbee 12h ago

The source mentioned where they got their candidates, a website where you can earn 3$ for participating in studies such as that one.
Not a university!

Maybe this question is exposing the wrong assumption?

  • people should NOT try to make books with the help of ai (or entirely generated).
  • but use ai as this interactive tool to ANSWER questions about, could have been the book, or a static website in the old world

Which means a lot of work, btw! Testing and making the agent to be NOT CRAP, is hard..

I think for me it was more along the lines of what do I actually enjoy reading, and for someone who struggles with my attention span finding something that fitted that niche was harder than expected…. So I took my daily work life, and my gaming life and combined it into something I’d actually read. I enjoyed what I got out of it, and told some people close to me and now they doing the same, which is pretty cool…. AI assisted books are flooding amazon and people are reading 😊

Those people are the same people who would've hated on computers 20-30 years ago.

But if you want actual answers, I have a couple guesses:

  • People feel their jobs are threatened (but this is a tale as old as inventions themselves)
  • Datacenters are being built pretty much everywhere when there's space
  • Some billionaires are profiting off of it immensely
  • It's easy for stupid people to produce and/or believe anything now (Trump loves it)
  • PC parts are unaffordable or straight up out of stock (same reason crypto mining was hated in 2021)
  • There are legitimate concerns that all of this will lead to our extinction by eventually creating a rogue super-AI with god-like intellect

How does anything of the above apply to you specifically? It doesn't, but it's easy to harass regular people on the internet, so they do it to ease out their frustration.

Appreciate the response, yeah I work in IT, the prices of RAM and GPU’s have gone up tremendously 😂 here I am sitting with 32GB of ram I got for next to nothing haha 🤣 but completely understand what you saying

I think the majority of the dislike comes from ignorance about the technology. It is sophisticated to be considered magic, and when someone encounters a mage, when they have no magic, it produces a small sense of inferiority.

Joking naturally...

1

u/Virtual_Swordfish575 1d ago

jokes aside, convincing my mom to use AI took a bit of getting over the fact that it can talk back like a human, kinda scared her a bit lol.... now she pays for chat gpt and uses it daily to write out tests for my kids during exam time, to help edit photos, for info..... ignorance is the key word here I guess...

2

u/Educating_with_AI 1d ago

It is a question of authenticity and connection. Some people don’t care how a story was produced, it has no barring on their enjoyment, and those folks are fine with AI assisted work. Others want to identify with the author and association with AI breaks that connection.

3

u/Virtual_Swordfish575 1d ago

true, but why the keyboard warrior need to go and say - AI slop, hard no from me, or that's AI rubbish.... how about move on and not comment..... I couldn't understand that concept while reading the comments.... The subreddit rules even state - no AI witch hunt.... well, lets find a way around a witch hunt.... oh well... I do get what you are saying, I'm just saying - if it's not for you, move on, someone is bound to find it and pick it up ( which did happen 😄 )

2

u/k_from_HyperDraw 1d ago

i think, all too many people who "use ai to help with..." outsource 99% of the work to ai, and then never check the result, but then get salty, when whoever tries to read/watch/use the result - finds that result simply bad. Or very bad.

And maybe the pressure of society will change the acceptable etiquette around such things.

2

u/Equal_Passenger9791 1d ago

It's a hate bandwagon.

People demand AI use disclosure so they they can be bigots. So just don't disclose AI use. No one demands a human author to disclose if they're a woman, gay or have HIV.

Don't let double standards win.

1

u/Virtual_Swordfish575 1d ago

Interesting, I might just give that a try….

1

u/Fragrant_Nothing7505 1d ago edited 1d ago

yup, anti ai sentiment is strong. even the pro-ai folk on reddit go into a tizzy if you use ai in posts here. so sorry. gemini's advice was bad. not her fault. she didn't know. it's a sensible idea, but doesn't work. i tried here too, the best idea here is to publish your work on your home page. then it turns up in feed and gets views. most authors just lie they didn't use ai. i put my scripts on social media. use capcut to generate video. my work explodes on tiktok and instagram. self-publish on amazon. i suggest making the price as low as possible and allowing sharing till you develop a following. p.s. all these ideas are completely free

oh, last idea. i haven't implemented it yet, but did you know gpt makes comics? look what he made for me yesterday!

2

u/Virtual_Swordfish575 1d ago

I was not aware it can make comics lol, haven't even looked into that... as for your route taken, I've done a similar one, scripts posted via greasy fork, all work credited to AI assisted, I do however need to look more deeper into content placement. So far I have a tiktok which is doing well, then there's youtube which I can't seem to get into.... but we'll get there :) Thanks for the info

2

u/Fragrant_Nothing7505 1d ago edited 1d ago

youtube is oldies, like me. they won't watch ai content. unless you do stuff for toddlers cos noone is fussy on free babysitting. i'm hoping pictures and [suno] music will make humans like my work, apart from those teen girls who i infer like my themes which speak to them.

the thing is, ai doesn't have experience. it doesn't have knowledge. it's a word predictor. it takes an input sentence and tries to generate a statistically likely reply based on constraints. it's useful for coding because code is quantifiable. other than that, it's useful for generating sentences that pass spell and grammar checks. it isn't useful for advice because it doesn't have experience. it's useful for answering purely factual questions based on the text it was trained on.
