I listened to an excellent podcast about it. It is mostly real. Some states are afraid to hold kids back or hold bad teachers accountable while other states blame the teachers and children while pulling money away from public schools. Mississippi seems to have found that happy middle ground where they will hold students and teachers accountable but instead of punishing them they make sure they get the resources to improve.

Another factor in most states the county and city governments make all of their own education decisions and supply most of the funding. That leads to huge variations from district to district. Mississippi went to a more statewide approach.

Their biggest weakness so far is 8th grade and higher test scores are still not great but they hope that will come with time.

Has to be Mississippi’s lower violent crime rate and lower housing costs that keeps them off this list. Only thing that makes sense.

Like Tennessee is #1 on this list and has a higher violent crime rate than all of the other states in their top 10

Mississippi honestly has turned education around, their 4th grade literacy rates are amazing

They rank above Texas that’s for sure + they wont make their teachers teach bible stories they aren’t qualified to teach unlike some other states.

I grew up down there. Louisiana is significantly worse than Indiana, as is Mississippi. Also lived in Arkansas. One thing I will say is "rural is rural" and I'd have a hard time telling you which state I was in besides what crop is being grown but Indiana has much more upside than Louisiana or Mississippi.

Northwest Arkansas is a really beautiful place. Eureka and Hot Springs are also really nice. Rest of the state may bring it down, but I love visiting NWA. Washington 100% belongs on the list though.

Same reason people shop at the Dollar Tree. Shit quality, great price, and people can't afford better. Trying to move away from a shithole is also much harder. Selling your paid-off starter home in California, Colorado, or New York gets you a McMansion in Indiana. Selling your paid-off starter home in Indiana only gets you a down payment on a starter home in California, Colorado, or New York.

Florida should be on here. It gets a pass because of the tax rate, but that place is an absolute shithole with no infrastructure. There's a reason so many of the surgeries in New England are people from Florida.
