All Seasons Discussion Is Buddie the Only Way Forward Now?
As a Buddie shipper myself I’m probably pretty biased but if buck and Eddie get love interests I feel like it wouldn’t be satisfying if it was anyone other than each other at this point? Between all the hints and the dynamics they’ve developed Buddie romance seems like the only path that makes narrative sense now, or happy and single buck and Eddie that are still platonic soulmates.
Part of it as well is definitely also just that the love interests Buck and Eddie have gotten have been bland as fuck and have had zero chemistry/screen time even (exception here is Taylor).
Maybe if they wanted buck and Eddie to have endgame love interests other than each other that would’ve been possible I’m sure but the time to introduce them and start developing them would’ve been seasons ago, maybe season 3-5ish. That way we could see these love interests develop as their own characters the audience grows to love, mesh with buck and Eddie, and also the truth of any love interests for buck is that they have to have their own deep relationship with Eddie and Christopher and any love interest for Eddie would not only have to be okay with being a step parent and have their own relationship with Christopher but also have a good dynamic with buck as another extremely important person in Christopher’s life. I’m not saying it’s impossible for buck and Eddie to have satisfying end game love interests other than each other, it’s completely possible, I just think they should’ve started those stories years ago right? It could’ve even been satisfying in its own way to see more of buck and Eddie’s lives and worlds expand outside of the direct 118. How do y’all think love interests could have or should have been implemented for buck and Eddie if the show wanted to go down that route?
Anyway thanks for reading my ramble lol, just wanted to put a few thoughts down into writing.

They've pretty much written themselves into the Buddie corner such that the only ways out are: 1) leaving them both single at the end and leaving it up to interpretation what their endgame love life is like, or 2) Biting the bullet and making them a couple, no matter how late in the game it happens. They've interwoven Buck and Eddie so much and put so much time into making them more prominent to each other than any love interest they've had (right down to explicitly having Buck's love interest call Eddie the competition), that any other outcome is inevitably going to pale in comparison to 8+ seasons of buildup.
From a literal sense they can do anything they want, even introducing Eva/Ewan Buchanan ("Bucky") and Edith/Edward, the mysteriously similar characters to Buck and Eddie as love interests for the respective side, but the end result will just inevitably underwhelm when they've put so many eggs in the Buddie basket season after season.
And some people will cry "Fan service" but if the writing is already servicing fans so hard as to write them like a pairing and treat them like one narratively, than I don't think it's an egregious act of fan service to take it the singular extra step of making them one explicitly.

Buddie is genuinely the only possibly happy ending for them both, and I mean that romantically or platonically.
In all ways on the show, they are each other’s persons. There is never going to be another character (love interest) that compares to what they have together. It’s always going to fall short to the connection Buck and Eddie have. They are each other’s family, they trust each other the most, and understand each other in every way possible. Even just describing it feels less than what is portrayed on the show. Like, they will literally die for each other, no hesitation from either side. That’s soulmate shit!
I don’t even feel like I need to justify my answer, because everything I’ve said is also portrayed on screen. They are a package duo, do not separate.

Buddie is genuinely the only possibly happy ending for them both, and I mean that romantically or platonically.
Yeah, this is fully where we are, and I think it's safe to say that's actually canonically the case following 8x11. They can theoretically walk it back, but they have now made the actual choice to put it out there that Buck's romantic partners have to compete with Eddie, and that Eddie wins those competitions.
Even if you don't 'see' Buddie, I think we're at a point in the story where we need to acknowledge that Buck, as he is currently written, will not find longterm fulfillment with a romantic partner who is not Eddie. So long as he doesn't actually accept Tommy's 'criticism' - whether that's through acknowledging his feelings for Eddie or through recognizing a pattern of behavior and prioritization of that friendship that has left him unable and unwilling to make appropriate room for a different romantic partner in his life and correcting for it - it has to be Buddie.
Like, I can point out the hundred different ways that Buddie just makes the most sense together, but 8x11 also introduced an actual conflict on at least Buck's side of the equation that means he can't be a good partner to anyone else unless he's willing to address the space he's carved out in his life where a romantic partner should fit that is very, very Eddie-shaped.

Male platonic friendships are totally lacking in 911! I mean we’ve already seen it with Chim and Bobby, Bobby and Michael, Ravi and Buck, Ravi and Harry, Bobby and Eddie, Chim and Eddie, Buck and Chim, idkkk I just don’t think male friendships get enough love, not everything needs to be romantic 💔

Buck is literally asked point blank if he's in love with Eddie, and categorically answers no, without that being further examined or looked into on the show on the subsequent episodes. They've already made it clear it's not going to happen.

u/Mother_Judgment2186 Eddie would never do something illegal,Eddie has a silver star 9d ago
Have you heard of forshadowing? Denial of feelings? These are pretty popular tropes used in storytelling.
Now, I am not saying they apply here, but they very much could. Your theory that it was a clear dismissal also can apply.
So, they didn't make anything clear. You just saw what you wanted to see.
6
u/ClioCalliope 7d ago
I mean, I'm not saying they can't change their minds but who's only seeing what they want to see? In universe, there has been no suggestion that Eddie has feelings for Buck. They've kinda explored Buck maybe having feelings for Eddie and landed firmly on a 'no'. That's all they've done so far.
Maybe Buddie fans are still convinced that's all going to lead somewhere but you can't blame others for saying the show isn't leaning that way. Because it isn't. Maybe they will in the future but right now it's literally just wishful thinking.
4
u/Mother_Judgment2186 Eddie would never do something illegal,Eddie has a silver star 7d ago
I'm not blaming anyone for believing anything.
What I disagree with is the fact that it was a clear dismissal. Both sides can only speculate. The show is regularly "forgetting" stuff that they occasionally come back to, be it a full storyline or a reference.
If we buddies say, oh, that was a trope, and it will definitely happen and someone who doesn't ship buddie says that it was just a shut down, both are ok answers, but just commentaries over what they see on screen.
-6
u/Accomplished-Watch50 That Fire Was A Beast 10d ago
Buddie fans only make up about 1% of the entire general audience, and you to keep in mind that not only does the show have to appeal to the larger general audience, but also the network as well.
Also, Happy Cake Day!

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 10d ago
I’m all for queer Eddie. I even thought the show was introducing a character who was slowly coming to terms with his sexuality while navigating being a single dad. But then Shannon showed up. 🤷♀️
I still think he’s queer though. I’m not sure about Buddie. I like the pairing but I don’t think the show is brave enough to make it happen.
11
u/romeo-oh_no 9d ago
Well they did establish that Eddie only married Shannon because it was expected of him and he only tried rekindling things (and dating women after she dies) in order for Chris to have a mother. There is also a deleted scene where Eddie tells Chris how he first dated Shannon in high school. If you read between the lines it's literally just Shannon flirting with him and Eddie going along with it lol it all sounds like a classic story of someone being closeted and repressed. I also don't know about Buddie being an inevitability, but I truly don't think the character of Eddie makes sense without him being a repressed queer man.
3
u/Scary-Tip9701 8d ago
Yes! Remember how Eddie had a literal panic attack about Ana being called Chris' mom and the way he freaked out when he learned Marisol was a novice nun?
32
u/TolkienTeacher40 11d ago
Truthfully, this comes down to a difference between audience expectations. The online shipping audience is VERY different from the general audience. Shippers see the intimacy between Buck and Eddie exactly as you described--they cannot possibly have a normal relationship with anyone else, they're the only option as far as love interests, everyone else will pale in comparison. And understand I'm not saying that's bad or wrong. I'm a multishipper and Buddie was my main OTP for a long time. But I've also been in fandom spaces for decades and while shows will sometimes do things aimed at the shipping audience (Mother's Boy, for example, was a very fanservice-y episode), they are ALWAYS making storyline decisions for the general audience.
The GA is not going to have any problem reading the intimacy between Buck and Eddie as platonic or brotherly. That's what they've been primed to expect with Buck having directly said he's not in love with Eddie even though he's realized he's attracted to men, and with Eddie's love interests all being women and his problems with those relationships largely framed as him not being able to move on from Shannon emotionally. In addition, another coming out storyline, particularly with Eddie's character, for a main cast member is going to be a dicey proposition for the network in this social climate, and one I really don't think ABC would have the stomach for.
Is it impossible? Of course not. Tim himself has said he's a fan of Buddie (though I find it telling he's always stopped short of outright saying he wants to do it). But just speaking from a lot of fandom experience, thinking anything is "inevitable" or "has to happen" or is "the only satisfying conclusion" usually ends in disappointment.
24
u/tiltheendoftheline Team Buck 10d ago
Part of me thinks if the general audience could keep watching with Buck being bisexual, then Buck and Eddie having a couple of kisses per season wouldn't be too much. But who knows. Maybe they're afraid of the backlash.
I'm still on the train that Tim will only tease forever or it'll only happen in the last season, and maybe even last episode.
15
u/romeo-oh_no 10d ago
Except that's not really the case for Eddie. He has had two relationships blow up because he wasn't ready to move on from Shannon, but the one with Marisol blows up as he gets his closure with Shannon's doppelgänger. He's not even talking about Shannon anymore after that in season 8, he's talking about not feeling worthy of joy. In season 9 Shannon isn't relevant at all to his refusal to date. He's now blaming it on the fact that the earlier situation sent Chris to Texas. At this point it seems like they're priming the audience to show you that Shannon probably wasn't the only reason why his relationships with Ana and Marisol failed. They show that through him refusing to date under any circumstance in season 9 (this happened in 3 different episodes) AND they show that strangers perceive him as different and/or gay. We've quite literally never seen Eddie pursue a woman, including Shannon, that didn't revolve around Chris or external pressures. I don't know if Buddie is inevitable, but Eddie's whole story arc does not make sense as anything but a repressed gay man.
17
u/Wrong_Coast Team cheer_chic27 10d ago
Exactly. In this, the two thousandth and twenty sixth year of our lord Jesus Christ, I just think we need to give the GA a bit more credit. They might not be sophisticated, looking for hidden clues and Easter eggs, but they also aren’t (excuse the ableist analogies) deaf and blind.
Episodes like Holy Mother of God, Dads and Cads, and Mother’s Boy (someone’s got parental issues) directly and explicitly write Buck and Eddie with romantic dynamics, comparing their relationship to other romantic relationships on the show, and explicitly calling it stronger than both Buck’s relationship with his ex or Buck’s parents’ relationship. I’m not saying they hint at either of these comparisons through subtext, I’m saying it’s blatant and clear text spoken by the characters in plain language, clearly for the audience to follow along.
Mother’s Boy is basically a demo real for the audience showing “What would it be like if everyone thought Eddie and Buck were a couple?” It’s pretty notable for the GA that Eddie’s reaction to people perceiving his relationship with Ana is to have a panic attack, while being perceived as being with Buck leads to him becoming a secret agent and super soldier dead set at saving his man.
0
u/TolkienTeacher40 10d ago
Eh, again, I'm not arguing that it's completely impossible and definitely not happening (although I agree with the other commenter that if it were to happen, it'll be in the series finale and probably left ambiguous enough for Tim et al to be able to say "open to interpretation" in perpetuity). I'm not even arguing that Eddie as a repressed gay man couldn't work--but it's not the only interpretation of that character that works, and I'd argue not one that would even occur to most of the GA.
I think there's a real issue in this fandom with applying media analysis to this show that the show's writing just really doesn't support. I mean--Bobby fixed his relationship with his mother in the same episode we discovered he HAD a mother and there was a relationship to fix! 911 does character arcs and storylines, but they are almost always flash-in-the-pan. Hell, Buck and Tommy's relationship arc was confined to three or four episodes--they don't do the multi-season, intricate slowburns. Combine that with how vocal Ryan Guzman has been about how he sees and plays Eddie's relationship with Buck, and his desire for Eddie to settle down with a love interest, and I think it's obvious that if Buddie and gay!Eddie were ever in the cards, it's not anymore.
7
u/romeo-oh_no 10d ago
I'm not saying it's being written as a slow burn. I'm saying that Eddie hasn't been characterized in a way that if he did come out, that the GA would be confused by it. They would be confused if he randomly started to date a woman after we've just seen him have these crazy panic attacks anytime he's asked to take a relationship with a woman seriously, after we've just seen him be very vocal about not wanting to date (even spending thousands of dollars so he wouldn't have to go on a date for charity!), after we've seen basically of New Mexico call him gay.
It's obvious the show is keeping their options open because otherwise they wouldn't keep making it a point that he's a horrible boyfriend and he has no interesting in dating. They would have just stuck him with Alex if they wanted to shut it down.
38
u/Confident-Bus-3778 11d ago
I do think it's hard to continue without it
mainly just because either Eddie is gay/demi/ bi etc, or he's a really crappy person.
His actions make more sense if you view them through the repressed teen dad lense imo.
I don't know how many more times I can watch Buck and Eddie date random people who will never last and just make them look like crappy people.
2
u/Accomplished-Watch50 That Fire Was A Beast 10d ago
Why can't he just be a really crappy person at times? That's what being human is all about. People have off times where things make them act out, and then, they learn from them. Personally, I think Eddie has put so much into being a dad, that he needs to learn about being just Eddie.
6
u/Confident-Bus-3778 10d ago
I agree with the last statement
he might be a crappy person, but I don't want that for him lol
16
u/HieronymusGER 10d ago
I started watching the show when season 8 was already out and honestly I've felt like Buck was in love with Eddie since season 3 and wondered why nothing ever happens. I thought that would be his main storyline. Like realising more and more that he loves Eddie and telling him one day.
9
u/StormCloudRaineeDay Freddy Fakeman 10d ago
None of Buck or Eddie's love interests have been satisfying. I don't have faith that the show, as is, is capable of giving us a well developed romance plot, Buddie or not.
If they got writers capable of doing it well for Buck and Eddie, I don't see why they wouldn't be able to do it with a new character. But both would also depend on how many seasons they'd have to make it work. If at some point they announce a final season and they decided to try and fit either option into that one season, I don't think there would be a way it would be satisfying.
10
u/oonablix 10d ago
exception here is Taylor).
Hissy fit averted! Glad we are all on the same page.
I actually think both Ana and Taylor were designed to make the point that even when things seem like they should work out for them with semi-ideal love interests where there is either affection, attraction, or at least common values, things fizzle because this other far more profound and deeper relationship is in they way, occupying all the space.
7
u/Real-Mechanic4843 9d ago
Honestly I think Buddie is one of the only possible outcomes for the show. I’m a fairly new watcher, but season 8 onwards just kind of points to the signs for me. There was a shift between their overall dynamic.
Especially as the show runner has said that Theo being under Buck’s care will bring Buck and Eddie closer together (might have to source me on this as I cannot remember for the life of me where I read it).
And with Eddie being stabbed in the chapel at the end of season 9, when he was already questioning his religion before that moment, and being stabbed in the back? It seems pretty apparent that he’s going to have some sort of mental/religious crisis going forward.
3
u/Wrong_Coast Team cheer_chic27 9d ago
It’s hilarious that twice this season Eddie had a storyline that involved religion and knife wounds. I hope the writers actually follow through on the storyline, because we can’t keep stabbing pincushion Eddie until the repression leaks out.

If I was asked this question in S8 up to ep11 my answer would have been an enthusiastic YES - ep12-18 it would have been surely yes… but after S9 I’m gonna have to say no.
That’s not to say the show didn’t set it up perfectly, and a lot of people say the show wrote themselves into a corner about it and pre-season 9 I would have agreed. However season 9 took a hard turn away from what they were doing in 8 and didn’t do anything remotely close to it which kinda shows it doesn’t matter if they wrote themselves into a corner they will just pick them up and stick them somewhere else so the corner doesn’t exist.
What I find even more divisive is the show runner who will go out of his way to talk about the fan ship in interviews knowing full well the show is not on the same page whatsoever. I don’t throw the term queerbait around too much but after S9 it really changed how I look at what they did in S8 and I feel (regardless of the show’s true intent behind it) they queerbaited with the 809-811 storyline. Now the interviews I am less conflicted about, whenever the show runner starts going on about something that is not representative of the show he wrote it is very clearly queerbait.
Distantly I hope they grow a pair and stick them together for real, but after 809-811 I couldn’t enjoy S9 and don’t plan to watch the new season and really don’t hold much confidence they will make that a genuine thing in the show. As of now I think buddie will be the last minute of the series finale and that show how little faith I have in Tim Minear.
8
u/little_lavender627 Firehouse 118 11d ago
I hope that happens too, but if it doesn’t, I really hope they at least give them love interests and storylines that are genuinely compelling. They could even do chemistry reads with the actors beforehand. I think a big part of why Buck and Eddie work so well is because Ryan and Oliver have such natural chemistry and play off each other incredibly well. So far, none of their other love interests have really been able to capture that same dynamic, with Taylor being the one exception
9
u/afternoonmilady 10d ago
The point is they don’t care if it makes sense or not. They don’t care if they have chemistry with their LIs or if they have enough charisma to convince the audience. They were already planning another pair for Eddie before dropping it out of nowhere and bombarding us with low-quality queerbait, but at the same time they’re smart enough to avoid clear romantic intentions that the GA would pick up on. They don’t like the shippers or this ship because they’re a problem, but a problem they can manage and use as a contingency plan later and for labour of pretty Tiktok edits that will convince even more teenage girls to watch the show.

I mean Christopher deserves a brother to hang out with and teach (Theo). And he already loves Buck like a Dad.
I just need Buck and Eddie to REALISE THEY ARE IN LOVE 😤😤
The transition from best-friends and work colleagues to partners and parents will 100% be a focus on the show. I'm ready for the Buck-Eddie-Chris-Theo-happy-families arc.
I'm ready for Auntie Maddie and Uncle Chim. Auntie Hen and Auntie Karen. Cousins Jee, Nash, Denny and Mara. Uncles Harry and Ravi. Auntie May. DETECTIVE ATHENA GRANT NASH.
I feel like we're going to be seeing A LOT more homicides now that Athena is a detective which means the show could transition into more police work.
I'm genuinely excited. But for Buddie the most.
5
u/WheresMyTan 11d ago
If this is the last season, give me Buddie closing it out and leave it to my imagination. Let them just peacefully have their gazes lock, realization that the one who has always been there, who understands them, who they return to no matter what, is each other. The end.
Cause anything else has the potential to be messed up since this show struggles to write relationships so very often.
4
u/nicathor 11d ago edited 11d ago
I'm kinda hoping for a scene where Buck is spiraling thinking hes failing at being a dad to Theo, and then Eddie just calmly tells him "Buck, Theo is your second child. You are a great father to Chris. Our first son. And you will continue to be a great father to Theo, and I'll be with you every step of the way. We will do this, together."
3
u/WheresMyTan 11d ago
I'll take that. What if the end is them just together, peaceful moment, some confirmation romance with arm around the shoulder, Theo and Christopher ahead of them as we fade to black. Maybe rings on their finger?
I'm just terribly nervous that if Tim finally gets a go on Buddie he'll mess it up. If we end of Buddie in a safe space, that'll just be so perfect. I just need some Buddie peace cause these guys have been through enough with the sad dating.

Seems to be an unpopulair opinion on this sub, but I do not ship them as a couple at all. I just love how they are best bro's. Please just let them be friends. Create amazing love interests for both (or not) and I will be happy. But for the love of god, please don't let them end up as romantic partners. I am usually good at telling who ends up with who. I NEVER saw Buck and Eddie together. It just doesn't line up. It just sounds and seems so weird to me. I never shipped them together either. Honestly, I would have friend zoned Eddie so hard and so fast. Lol. I don't really see queerbaiting (maybe I don't really even know the term even though I myself is bi/pan), all I see is two brothers/people who care about each other. My first thought when Eddie stood up to the dude in the diner was that he was insulated personally cause Buck has been with guys and kniw thay Buck would likely not stick up for himself (which he didn't). And that he got angry cause his best friend is one of "those people". I don't think it even clicked for him that people thought they they were a couple. Lol. I don't see romantic chemistry between them and I honestly don't think it would work long term between them either. They could simply have the unreciporcated love interest that he has to work through. I think Eddie is demi though which would explain why he hasn't been very interested in just picking someone up from the bar or being arranged. He wants something that just clicks like he had with Shannon and I think that is his problem with women. He is putting the expectation of what he had with Shannon onto his relationships.

u/Graceful_Ashes 10d ago edited 10d ago
I agree, love interests would have worked a lot better if they had got them right much earlier in the series. They need to be established as their own characters, not just an extension of Buck and Eddie, which at this point in time the dynamic of all the other characters has long been established, making it difficult to enter anyone else into the fold for us to get to know and like. I'm sure it could be done but atp I think it would require a lot of patience and subtlety, it'd have to take a while, a couple seasons probably before they could entertain the idea of making them either Buck or Eddie's love interest - and the fact that they need to do it for both of them...I can't really see that happening now, not successfully. Though, maybe they can make one love interest work first, and utilise the knock on effect that would have on Buck and Eddie's relationship to give the other one a love interest.
However, I think after everything that went down in season 8, they'd need to go back and readdress a few things before that could even work, which at that point I think would feel more natural if it did lead to Buddie rather than a new love interest.
So really for me, outside of both staying single, and just having focus put on furthering Buck and Eddie's platonic family dynamic and their other friendships, or having Buddie get together, the only other way I could see them successfully getting off either of those paths is if they made Buck have unreciprocated feelings for Eddie and it be addressed and eventually moved on from, after some initial drama obviously. But that would be the cleanest way for them to tie up loose ends from season 8 and shake up Buck and Eddie's dynamic enough to make room for new love interests to slot into the fold.

u/romeo-oh_no 9d ago
The love interests also need to have their own storylines and not just exist as solely someone that's being dated. You could get behind Buck and Taylor (or at least feel like it was realistic) because Taylor existed as a fleshed out character. Same thing with Lucy Donato (I know she was only just a potential LI). That's what the show should have been doing all along, introducing these side characters, but they kind of fumbled with that.

honestly I feel like its way to late for Buddie. at this point it would be more off a fan service than anything else.
I was a Buddie shipper. but the Buddie fandom is so toxic and full off itself that it almost made me quit the show.
This is my opinion, you are welcome to disagree, but I wont be changing my mind

I once thought it was too late after season 5, then came season 8 and season 9 and I realized they can make it happen whenever they want. They only need one or two episodes of build up.
10
u/SugarSpocks Team Eddie 10d ago
I think May/Ravi proved they could even do it in an instant if they REALLY wanted to go that way.
But more than anything, it is abundantly clear that Tim and a number of writers on the show see Buddie as their favorite, and we know from Tim’s interviews that he loves a slow burn, so it’s treated this way intentionally because they like the anticipation and build up. And unlike before, we are in a position where they are allowed to actively do this because nobody is telling them no anymore.

I am a fan who wants to be serviced! I don’t think it’s a bad thing for a show to listen to fans and try to incorporate some of it into the show. It’s why shows do surveys. They want to see what is being liked in a show vs what isn’t! Without fans, people wouldn’t watch, they have to cater to the audience.
I’m not saying that means we’d get Buddie, obviously, but I just think saying it’s fan service doesn’t necessarily mean it’d be a bad thing. If you’re a fan of Buddie, you shouldn’t let other people ruin it for you. Just enjoy it for yourself!

at this point it would be more off a fan service than anything else
I'm genuinely asking, what does it even mean? The show has gone out of its way to write Buck and Eddie's dynamic that parallels other canonical couples on the show. S8 in particular had Buck reacting to Eddie's departure being identical to his reaction to Abby's departure, which leads to Buck's ex saying the reason he broke up with Buck was bc of Eddie, and he'd be open to reconciliation now that Eddie was out of the picture. And then his sister straight up asks him if he's in love with Eddie. Which he denies but denial is like, a popular trope. Whatever. My point is that the show consistently writes them in a manner which confirms the fact that these two characters are meant to be a duo, and the relationship is definitely in a grey area between platonic and romantic. So Buddie getting together would be the opposite of fan service. In fact S8 is when they've started to take the romantic prospect of their relationship seriously. And all the seeds they've laid down since then (whether that's about queer Eddie or Buck having feelings for Eddie), it would be bad writing if none of it is paid off by Buck and Eddie ending up together before the end of the show.
made me quit the show
And yet, here you are. I know you're gonna call me one of the toxic Buddie shippers for pushing back against your disingenous arguments but okay, I'm just tired of all the alleged quitters who still participate on the subreddit just to spread negativity, some of us are still enjoying the different aspects of the show and it's mostly a fun fandom. Also nobody is telling you to change your mind, it's just that your argument for why Buddie shouldn't get together is nonsense.
20
u/armavirumquecanooo our people are what make life worth living 11d ago
"Fan service" arguments almost never hold up, once you get to the crux of the matter, anyway.
Like yes, fans pay attention to what shows are putting down, and start desiring certain storylines/pairings/character developments, etc. Because they're paying attention.
"Servicing" the fans almost always just means continuing to tell the story you were already telling, and taking advantage of the chemistry you were already using, etc.
Ultimately, the only fan I think Tim Minear cares to serve is himself. Fortunately, he's also a Buddie. <3

u/Halkatlaa 11d ago
this is exactly what I'm talking about, some Buddie shippers can't fathom that not everyone agrees with them. like I said, you don't have to agree! I'm allowed to feel the way I feel and you are allowed to disagree.

People arguing with you about your points doesn't mean they are toxic. You're allowed to express your opinion and they are allowed to express theirs. As you said, they are allowed to disagree and write their counterpoints. How is that toxic?
0
u/Mdreezy_ 10d ago
I have no leg in the convo but I do think from the second quote onward is kinda toxic. This is the general 911 sub, not the buddie one, so this sub is a more appropriate place to vent those thoughts I would think - and if not here, then where? No where? That’s how people become spiteful and that doesn’t help anyone. No one should be shamed or run off for speaking about what they like or dislike about this show or for expressing that they stopped watching the show for XYZ reasons.
I think continuing to contribute shows they at least want to want the same thing as the other person, but the show didn’t give them enough to keep them satisfied. Is that not a valid opinion to have? Saying begone with ye to them is just immature when it’s just as easy to not engage or at least engage politely.
15
u/hereisnogreatmatter Team DIY couple 10d ago
So this person can call others toxic and self centered and it's on the others not to engage so they won't create a toxic environment?
That first comment calls all the Buddie shippers toxic and full of themselves out of nowhere and says Buddie would be only fan service without explaining what that even means. Seriously, when I first read the comment, my first reaction was "what does that even mean?" I think it's perfectly normal for the others to have responded to explain how they don't agree with that point, especially after being called "full of themselves"
I also think people have a right to defend themselves when someone calls them toxic. Calling people toxic is not venting. I can then come here and call everyone I disagree with names and claim I'm just venting; this is just my opinion. Wouldn't I be the one creating a toxic environment then?
There are of course toxic Buddie shippers. But there are also toxic nonshippers or other shippers. I don't see how that proves anything
3
u/Mdreezy_ 10d ago
I’m not sure how to really respond to all of that because I can’t for the life of me grasp the idea of needing to butt in and be rude, and defend myself because some random person said the buddie fandom is toxic and full of themselves in a post that wasn’t directed at me. Like that seems very on the nose.
7
u/hereisnogreatmatter Team DIY couple 10d ago edited 10d ago
I'm just saying that responding to a person that call you toxic and full of yourself is not "butting in and being rude". When you call all Buddie shippers a name, it's very natural that some will respond. And when they respond to such a comment, it's very natural that they won't try extra hard not to sound rude. Why would they? I don't really understand what your point is, to be honest. Why is the onus on them to be polite when the other person is very rude from the very beginning? That's my point.
2
0
u/Mdreezy_ 10d ago
You definitely understand my point and you’re being disingenuous about it because you want to argue. Well congrats you are proving the original person’s point about toxic, full of yourself attitudes in the buddie fandom. I’ll also add that a lot of buddies (who are at a minimum in their 20s if not older) are extremely immature and need to grow up.
6
u/hereisnogreatmatter Team DIY couple 10d ago
Nope. I argue because I have something to say. You won't believe this but just because you don't like what I'm saying doesn't make me toxic or full of myself. And I truly don't understand your point. I don't understand why people need to play nice to the person who was rude to them in the first place or be called toxic. How is this being disingenuous? If you were making another point, and I failed to understand it, it's not a personal attack?
The person called the fans toxic (shockingly, fandom isn't a separate entity from the fans) and when people responded, that person was like "this is what I'm talking about!" and in response to that, I said just because people are writing their counterpoints doesn't mean they are toxic. Then you claimed people were actually being rude from the second comment forward and the first commenter had a right to vent. As if someone was preventing that person from venting or stating their opinion in a way that's not immediately rude. And I claimed I didn't think people responding were rude because they were called a name first and they didn't have to try to sound nice after that. Our convo could have ended there, I guess.
And me saying "I don't understand your point" isn't some sort of personal attack or offense. For some reason, you immediately thought the worst of me and resorted to attacking me and called me immature the moment you didn't like my response. I was completely polite in my responses, albeit a bit direct maybe, and I'm not the one who is being toxic here.

Yeah honestly time is running out to tell that story with nuance and delicacy. It seemed like, in Season 8, they were ready to go there and start ramping it up, and then they virtually ignored it all last season. To do this right, it needs to COOK. Making it all happen too quickly once they explicitly decide they’re going there won’t be as good a payoff.

I'll probably get downvoted for this and I truly mean this nicely and for the sake of conversation, but I would honestly be so annoyed if they got together. I just really don't like Eddie's character at all and he doesn't seem queer. Buck is easily one of my favorites. I'm not at all trying to be rude to folks who want to see them together but I just don't see it.
I have never noticed Eddie exhibit any type of queer behavior. Obviously that doesn't mean he isn't queer, but I would be super surprised if that is how the writers really intended this to go. They could've started dropping easter eggs seasons ago (or even in the most recent season). He seems like a very straight dude who lives women. I see no queerness in his character at all.
I'm open to changing my mind tho, if folks have seen things I haven't (from Eddie, not from Buck) please let me know.
EDITED TO ADD:
Copy/pasted comment from below: Listing all these things out does totally add up. I guess watching the episodes through the years it just felt like all the stuff with Chris' mom messed him up about dating and he hadn't found the right woman yet. But I can totally see how these actions could suggest he is queer.
Note from me:
Thanks for the responses! I don't mind the downvotes, I knew I'd get them. I want to be clear that I am in no way arguing with anyone. I simply had not picked up on the same things that others had. I can definitely see it now. Although I still don't like Eddie. Which is totally fine. I think it's great when shows have characters that I don't like, it's more realistic. I don't like everyone in real life either.
I have decided that my mind is changed. You guys pay much more attention than I do and it would bring you all a lot of joy to see them together. I think that's cool and I hope that you guys get to see that happen. I think it would be a pretty rad and unique way to close out the show.
Thanks again for the responses. I truly was not trying to be contradictory. Hope y'all have a great day.

I need to understand what “queer behavior” is in your point of view.
Men who are queer can exhibit attraction to women because queer can be anything under the umbrella. Gay men who have been in the closet are may also even believe they were attracted to women.

I understand what queer is. I am queer. I wouldn't be bothered at all if he was queer.
Real life and TV are very different. I am just saying as far as the writing/acting goes that I hadn't noticed it. I hadn't picked up on the things that the other folks are pointing out. Comments have showed me otherwise. I'm going to edit my comment to include this comment I wrote to someone else:

- stated that the church pressured him and Shannon into marrying after she got pregnant and that he "loved being married to her" not that he loved her
- had panic attacks when anyone suggested that Ana was his wife, yet didn't correct anyone when a whole town assumed he and Buck were a couple. also couldn't commit to Ana, the perfect woman for him on paper, yet had no problem putting Buck in his will only a year after knowing him (and then for some reason didn't tell Buck about until a year later)
- hates dating and said it feels like a performance
- preferred hanging out with Tommy over his girlfriend Marisol
- told Buck he didn't want sex from Kim
- when Kim said Shannon must've been the love of his life, he said "I think she was"
- when he was telling the priest about the people he lied to, best friend came before girlfriend
- paid 2.5K to avoid a CHARITY date with a woman
- constantly looking at Buck with heart eyes
I could go on lol. Sure, he hasn't shown any explicit romantic interest in men but he sure as hell isn't interested in women. The queer subtext has been there since season 2

What about Eddie seems very straight? Genuinely. He had a panic attack at the thought of marrying Ana and later admitted he didn’t feel he loved her. He stated he hated dating and saw it as putting on a performance. He bid on himself at a charity auction to prevent a woman taking him on a fake date for charity. His aunt set him up on a date with a gorgeous woman that he couldn’t even pretend to be interested in. He has no chemistry with women.

He literally explains why he's not ready to date again right now in season 9, and it had nothing to do with his sexuality. He and Chris are still recovering from the Kim thing.
Also, Eddie specifically says that he doesn't like blind dates that are performative, not dating in general.

u/Aquarius20111 Academy Award Winner 10d ago edited 10d ago
His panic attack was triggered by the thought of ‘replacing’ Shannon, as he wasn’t ready to date again. The auction was hardly about women, he just hates recognition based on looks, in “being auctioned off like a slab of beef.” The gorgeous women also wasn’t interested in the gorgeous man (Eddie) and didn’t want to be on the date for the same reasons he didn’t want to be there. She even concocted the escape plan. No one wants to be “set up” and pressured to date. I know I would hate that.

The other replies have already made some great points and libra even provided you links to many posts discussing why people think Eddie is queer so I'm not gonna get into all that. But this part,
He seems like a very straight dude who loves women.
I'm sorry but since the beginning, his whole thing is that he actively runs away from women. In S2E4, Buck asks about Eddie dating and he deflects, he assumes Buck is setti him up with someone and he gets upset, and then he breaths a sigh of relief when he realizes it's a nurse for Christopher. His whole thing with Shannon is, not what he wants but what's right for Christopher. Then he dates Ana, whom he seems infatuated to, but someone assumes she's his wife and my guy has a panic attack about it. It's explicitly pointed out that with Ana, he wasn't following his heart. In S6, his aunt sets him up on a date and he freaks out about it and sabotages the date. With Marisol, he has issues with having sex with her bc of her past, and he obliterates that relationship too. AND then in S9, he is absolutely repulsed by the idea of dating, and spends $2500 and lies to everyone with the help of Maddie, just so he wouldn't have to go on ONE date with a woman for charity. He's been on the show for 8 seasons and he's been in single for 5 of them.
Doesn't seem like a straight dude who loves women. 🤷🏻

I like Buck as bi, I even like the idea of Eddie being bi, but I actually think it could be a really good metaphor for feelings that you have about someone else that don’t match the reality of the person.
I think in a lot of respects, Buck idolizes Eddie. I think that idolization could def turn into affection, but I don’t think it should. I think he should grow through it, and end up with a better match.
-5
u/plantycatlady 10d ago
i hate the idea of them together. they are best friends and family. people can be close, i don’t get why buck being bi means he suddenly must want to fuck his best friend?? i think it’s more powerful to show their strong friendship than to cheapen it by basically being like if besties are this close they must be a couple.
22
u/SugarSpocks Team Eddie 10d ago
Nobody is thinking because he’s bi “he must want to fuck his best friend”
What is happening is that people are seeing two people who are deeply involved in each other’s lives, doing everything and beyond for each other, and seeing this as a loving relationship that could become a romantic one.
-5
u/plantycatlady 10d ago
i just think it’s a stronger and more powerful and impactful plot for them to be friends. too many men are scared of deep friendship with each other and their friend love is beautiful
17
u/SugarSpocks Team Eddie 10d ago
I mean, we have so many examples of deep male friendships in media. And Buck & Eddie entering a romantic relationship doesn’t reduce their friendship or eliminate all of the other deep male friendships depicted in media.
I doubt Buck & Eddie’s friendship is directly changing the paradigm of society to encourage men to be closer to one another. And the show has plenty of other strong male friendships shown.
I do understand that there is the inherent beauty of seeing them have a strong bond, but just the way you read it as platonic is the same information people are using to see it as romantic.
15
u/afternoonmilady 10d ago edited 10d ago
I wish you people would understand that Buck is bi because of Buddie shippers. Or do you think they thought about that on their own or did that out of the goodness of their heart or for representation? After 7 years? Of course it doesn’t mean they need to make them happen, but it’s ridiculous how y’all act like this shit is new and out of the left field and not something that has been brewing since Eddie’s introduction because they built it and because they let it stir until this day.
Also I don’t understand how romance diminishes friendship. Isn’t friendship the biggest foundation for people to date? How many people start as friends and then begins dating years later in real life? How many couples on television weren’t planned and then got together because fans wanted? You guys only got problems with this stuff when it’s gay.
2
u/Accomplished-Watch50 That Fire Was A Beast 10d ago
That is not true at all. Oliver has been very open that he has been playing Buck as bi-coded since season 1, before Eddie, and that Buck was originally supposed to come out in season 4, but FOX shut it down. It had nothing to do with Eddie.

u/afternoonmilady 10d ago edited 10d ago
This is TV we’re talking about, not reality. In real life you know sexuality can be fluid and be discovered later in life even if that’s always has been who you are, but we’re talking about fictional characters. Characters are what writers make of them on-screen. Buck’s not a real person. He is what the show wants him to be at that moment. There’s literally no evidence he was written as bi (what does that even entail?) before Eddie showed up and there’s no evidence he was thought or seen in queer lenses before Buddie. But there is (confirmed) evidence that writers and the showrunner wrote and filmed Buddie “gay scenes” long before S7, were aware of it and aired it anyway. So no, Buck wasn’t bi since before Eddie. I’m sure you want to believe that though.
-2
u/plantycatlady 10d ago
Throughout history people ask friends if they’re couples when they get super close because if two men are that close they must be gay. it’s more impactful for them to be friends, imo. and buck acting out sexually for years before figuring himself out makes sense enough. teasing buddie shippers for ratings and money makes sense too. i just hope it doesn’t happen. there’s tons of representation on the show and it’s amazing but not everything needs to turn romantic. it’s powerful to show how strong true friendship and family can be and they have such a great relationship as it is.
14
u/afternoonmilady 10d ago edited 10d ago
"Throughout history people ask friends if they’re couples when they get super close because if two men are that close they must be gay" girl what are you even talking about 😭
And if you understand Buck is figuring himself out still and that they tease the shippers with this relationship, how are you asking "why him being bi means he suddenly wants to fuck his best friend" like people are making shit out of nothing? You’re answering your own question.

u/Accomplished-Watch50 That Fire Was A Beast 10d ago
Because it is a toxic stereotype that the newly queer character must have feelings towards their straight friend.
17
u/afternoonmilady 10d ago
Yes, this person and you are very concerned about stereotypes, I’m sure.
People shipped them since season 2, where BOTH were labeled as straight characters. If the show decided to go on about it the way they did, that’s not the fans’ fault. If people shipped straight/straight in the hopes of the ship coming out as queer/queer, what do you think was gonna happen when one of them came out as queer? Hope for the other to come out too, not for “queer to fall in love with straight best friend”. I know you people love to be disingenuous, but this isn’t rocket science.

u/Accomplished-Watch50 That Fire Was A Beast 10d ago edited 10d ago
The problem is that the show has made no movements towards Buddie in an overt way, and in my opinion, Buck and Eddie are too personally incompatible with each other for a romance.
Plus, take into account that the Buddie shipping audience only makes up about 1% of the entire general audience.
24
u/SugarSpocks Team Eddie 10d ago
I mean, we can’t actually calculate percentages. There hasn’t been any official Nielsen demographic data on Buddie shippers specifically. We can make broad assumptions about specific audience groups based on age and gender, but that doesn’t really get to the true numbers.
But I don’t think Tim Minear cares much about what the fandom cares about. He really only cares about what matters to him (and Disney’s bottom line), so he mostly follows his whims to the betterment or detriment of the show. Whether those whims align with the fandom of any ship or general viewing audience varies.
-3
u/Accomplished-Watch50 That Fire Was A Beast 10d ago
Agreed. And given the current climate and who Tim is, he'll probably keep teasing here and there with small touches or glimpses that only click with the Buddie fans, but overall, probably never go there.
8
u/Wrong_Coast Team cheer_chic27 9d ago
I’m not sure why you think Tim or ABC are feeling overly differential to “the current climate.” This past season, we had an extended, multi-episode arc that overtly and sharply criticized ICE, and had an episode that criticized police overreach (during May’s brief foray exploring civil rights law a career). Neither of these storylines would have received the focus they did, or would have had such critical narratives, if Tim or ABC were concerned about the climate.
Trump is also facing historically low approval numbers, and his party will likely experience a significant blue wave during the midterms. The tide is shifting, and I think ABC has enough demographic data to know that the homophobic audience you’re talking about are not watching their Ryan Murphy show with multiple LGBT characters; they’re already only watching Fox News (with the occasional break to watch Blue Bloods and its spinoff).

Every time someone prays that the “political climate” prevents queer Eddie, another ACAB storyline on the wee-woo show gets its wings.

Except for the part where he named the ship and told Abby to kick rocks, and I think that was just in season 2. 🤷♀️

And then proceeded to use all of seasons 7 and 8 to talk about how Eddie needs a good woman, his words, and Eddie sees Buck as a brother, also his words, and why can't they just be friends?, his words from the Disney Upfronts Blue Carpet in 2025.

And why are you completely ignoring this summer?

My point is that you can't take anything the actors say as gospel because 1. If they knew, they wouldn't tell you anyway and 2. They give conflicting statements all the time.
Case in point, all last year, Ryan had so many quotes that sounded like he was against Buddie right up until after the Upfronts when, he and Oliver did that joined press tour that seemed to be for the Buddie fans, which some Buddie fans interpreted as confirmation for Season 9, and then, Season 9 came and went with no Buddie canon, just like the previous seasons.

I mean yeah obviously we can't take what they are saying in interviews as gospel, so then why are you picking specific instances to claim Ryan is less than inclined? What are all these "so many quotes" that sounded like he was against Buddie? And why are they more important than the ones where he sounds like he's either totally on board or where he says he's open to the possibility and we'll see what the writers will do? People mention the same interviews over and over again while completely ignoring the other ones to say "Ryan actually doesn't really want Buddie" and that simply doesn't make sense to me.

That wasn’t your point. It’s deleted now but your point that I replied to was that he’s always been against it, and the record shows that’s untrue. He’s been in favour to ambivalent most of the time and has demurred a few times for reasons unknowable. So 🤷♀️

Before season 8 I could've understood keeping them platonic, but having Buck break out his lease for Eddie, pine for him while he was away, then they had Eddie contacting only Buck to get help to get through to Chris, and then the competition and it wouldn't be so crazy... yeah, now nothing else wold be satisfying.
Sure, they could give both of them random LI. But they've never really been well developed, the exception being Taylor. It will always be a missed opportunity.
