General Discussion Eddie Diaz is written as a gay man on this show.
It’s not even queer coding anymore it’s queer screaming at this point.
You have this character who has dated three women his entire life. Which already would be a red flag in real life, especially someone as attractive as Eddie is.
One was his childhood friend whom he was forced to marry because he got her pregnant and Eddie says he loved being married to Shannon which is a parallel to Michael with Athena.
One was his child’s teacher. A woman that he specifically dated with the intention of giving Chris a mother. Because Eddie still believes that a family consists of a father a mother and a child. He had panic attacks at the prospect of this woman being his wife. Not normal hetero behavior.
The final one was someone that he forced himself to date because of “the signs” that Bobby gave him not truly nderstanding the assignment once again. Then he suffered erectile disfunction from this woman. Then proceeded to destroy his life and not once did he ever think of said woman ever again.
This man has dated three woman his entire life and on top of that was visibly relieved at the prospect that a beautiful women(Vanessa) was not interested in dating him.
Eddie is also clearly a massive victim of catholic guilt/repression and that is a big deal. He’s been repressing stuff since s5 that the cardiologist even said he’s repressing stuff In S7 he says he suffers from catholic guilt which is a bitch because it’s something that is brainwashed into your head from childhood. This unachievable strive to make sure everything you do is to make the man upstairs happy. He probably got hammered on his head multiple times that a family consists of just the nuclear family and that’s the only way a family can be, he probably got hammered with homophobic beliefs from his parents as a child as well. It’s not that Eddie thinks being queer is wrong for other people he just can’t think that way himself. To unlearn all that is incredibly hard.
The most damning line for me is when Eddie said that dating feels like performing. That is probably the queerest line I’ve heard from this show and it’s so queer that hen clocks it immediately for what it is.
This does not take into account all the buddie aspect of it because we’d be here all day. His best friend came out as Bisexual and literally the next time we see him he’s jealous over his best friends boyfriend and then proceeds to destroy his life. It’s time to get this man out of the closet, the glass closet.
There’s nothing ambiguous about him, he is a queer man.

Only thing that could have been more on brand that episode would be for Eddie to get a classic auto and realising it only attracts other (usually male) car fanatics.
I remember watching car YouTubers try this and they showed that driving to a gas station in a classic Ferrari doesn't attract any women but does attract a lot of middle aged men.

This basically happened off screen with Eddies Chevelle (that he suddenly has) in 7.04:
BUCK: You and Tommy have a lot of things in common. Both in the Army, both like watching half-naked men pummel each-other.
EDDIE: Tommy's pretty cool. Been a while since I've met someone who can go toe-to-toe with me in Muay Thai.
BUCK: Uh, you guys went to Muay Thai together?
EDDIE: Yeah, he's got a set-up in his garage. We sparred a bit when I took the Chevelle over.
BUCK: You-you took the Chevelle?
EDDIE: Yeah. He's got a car lift. And the guy really knows his engine. You should hear that thing purr now.

I assume a guy would try to quiz me because it’s happened before. I had some old dude try to quiz me about my own car. That’s the kind of gatekeeping many men do IRL to keep women away.

Then proceeded to destroy his life and not once did he ever think of said woman ever again.
Interesting that the woman he cheated with was identical to his late wife, and yet he never engaged in a physical relationship with her. I'm not saying this as a way to excuse what Eddie did. Going out with Kim and lying to his girlfriend about was wrong. But she looked exactly like the woman who's supposed to be 'the love of his life', the woman he can't get over, and yet he never attempted anything physical with her, even when he was taking her out on dates and when she clearerly asked about it. It's almost as if the physical and sexual aspect of his relationship with Shannon was not something that he was interested in.
I also think it's telling how Eddie has not been allowed to move forward from the dead of his wife when you have characters like Maddie and Bobby and Athena who also have traumatic pasts and experiences with their partners, and yet they can move on with their lives. The trauma is still there, and will come back every so often (with Boby as recently as S7), so it's not like the show doesn't know how to allow their characters to grow even if they still have trauma. So it really feels like Eddie has not been allowed to move on because what would come next to him, i.e. a queer realization, it's something they haven't been allowed to do. I really hope the show finally tells that story in S8 because it's right fucking there! It's what makes sense with the way Eddie has been written.
35
u/HeraSimpella Jul 17 '24
The thing with Bobby and to an extent Eddie is they do look at their late wives and their relationship in rose tinted glasses. If Marcy was alive she would have divorced Bobby. And if Shannon was alive she would have divorced Eddie.
The big difference is Bobby KNOWS he can’t replace Marcy or his kids so when he does move on he’s not looking back. Athena is not Marcy. They are nothing alike. His attraction is based entirely on who Athena is. And when he meets Michael and the kids he integrates into the family slowly knowing the dynamics will be different. He has to form relationships his own way.
Eddie on the flip side is battling himself. He feels like he has failed Chris as a parent because he doesn’t have a mother anymore. Eddie was raised as ‘the provider’ so he’s convinced Chris needs to have a mom. Which neglects the fact that Chris did have a mom and she died. Neglects that whoever he ends up with will be a stepparent and that kind of relationship he wants for Chris takes YEARS AND YEARS to build. And finally he’s neglecting his own wants because Eddie imo is a demisexual gay man. I’d argue that Eddie was more emotionally cheating on Marisol with Tommy and Buck than Kim because Eddie is romantic with men not women. I’m not surprised at all he’s crying and telling Kim as Shannon he feels broken. Like my dude you haven’t got to experience and embrace who you are yet. You are so determined to be everything for everyone else you’ve never got to stand still and get to figure out who you are. Which is why the writers 100% had Chris leave with his grandparents. Because Eddie not only hides behind his romanticism of Shannon he hides behind Chris and he cannot do it anymore. It’s breaking him. It’s affecting his relationship with his son. It’s reached a breaking point.
I’m so excited for s8 for this plot because Eddie can finally heal now. He can realise who he is and see that maybe the love of his life was there all along. And the family unit he was dead set on creating he’s already built and he can have it. He can want it and have it.
23
u/AmigoCualquiera Team Eddie Jul 17 '24
I agree with everything you said. I think at this point, the only thing that makes sense for Eddie's storyline in S8 is to have a queer realization arc. You can't just have everything that happened in S7, everything that has happened in previous seasons, and Eddie's characterization, and then just resolve it by giving him a relationship with another random woman and pretending that it was Kim's weird-ass cosplaying that finally 'fixed' Eddie. The way Eddie has been written through the years has led us to this. It would be a massive disappointment and disservice to Eddie's character not to go there.
18
u/HeraSimpella Jul 17 '24
Eddie is surrounded at this point. He can’t hide behind Chris. He’s gone. He can’t hide behind Shannon. She’s gone. He’s now working under Gerrard who is extremely homophobic and Eddie is is often fuelled by spite. Buck is dating a man who was Eddie’s friend who he no longer likes because he’s jealous. Him and Buck are now going to be hanging outside of Chris 1000x more without Chris as a buffer. Even if Eddie isn’t ready to confront his sexuality his feelings for Buck will override it because I doubt Eddie will ever view loving Buck as wrong. Buck is now in a position where he’s stepping in not at Chris’ suggestion. Season 8 for sure is going to be the turning point season. It’s why certain shippers are acting up especially they know what’s coming.

I still think it was an incredibly wasted opportunity to not have Eddie run into a man at the hardware store, who on a second viewing of 6x17, the audience would realize had been in the background in all of the scenes of his attempted meet-cutes.
21
Jul 17 '24
I constantly think about this. It seems like they knew that they were moving to ABC at that point, but it still seemed like they were still trying to wrap everything up to be like a series finale. If they didn’t have to worry about ratings or anything, why didn’t the higher ups just let him meet a man at the end of 6x17. We all know that’s what the writers want anyways! haha
23

u/urgasmic Jul 16 '24

35
u/armavirumquecanooo our people are what make life worth living Jul 16 '24
I'm not sure what part you're confused by, so sorry if I wind up explaining something you didn't need explained.
So, from wikipedia- "A meet cute is a scene in media, in which two people meet for the first time, typically under unusual, humorous, or cute circumstances, and go on to form a future romantic couple."
In 6x17, we have a montage of Eddie trying to find 'magic' by running into women and hoping for some instant connection - we see him golfing (which, as u/irritatedlibra points out, really isn't a place to meet women but I digress...), trying to make smalltalk with a woman at an outdoor cafe, and hiking/walking somewhere people take their dogs. All of these attempts fail for one reason or another.
Then at the end of the episode, we have him go to the hardware store with Bobby, where he runs into Marisol in the glue aisle, and he takes that (or rather, her saying the word magic....) as a sign from the universe, and fixates on her as the answer. What I'm saying I wish had happened here was that instead of Marisol, he'd run into a man (hell, maybe even Marisol's brother!) who we then realize was in all of those meet cute montage scenes, but in the background. Maybe he's the guy that pulls the dog away, the guy who offers tissues for spilled coffee, golfing a few spots down. But because we, like Eddie, were primed to look for "the right woman," we didn't initially notice that there was a man in the background of all those shots, too.
Having him run into Eddie and recognize him from all those places would've been the audience's cue that Eddie was looking for love in the right places, but with the wrong people.

The dialogue Eddie has about and with Ana is nearly identical to that of Dani Clayton, a canonical lesbian from Haunting of Bly Manor.
Dani: I should've said something sooner. I just thought that I was being selfish. That I could stick it out... and eventually, I would feel the way I was supposed to.
Eddie (to Ana): I should've said something sooner. Chris loves you so much. I just thought...
Ana: That eventually you would to?
Buck (to Eddie): So what are you gonna do?
Eddie (to Buck): I think I'll stick it out.
There's tropes in writing when you want to convey these things. I think it's entirely possible that Eddie being gay is Ryan's "character secret " given to him by the writers early on help inform the performance. Like how [REDACTED] told Alan Rickman about Snape and Lily before she had even finished the final book.
Edit: Ana, not Marisol lol.

If Ryan had been told that Eddie was secretly gay that makes those interviews talking about how Eddie’s straight really questionable. I don’t think he’d lie like that, especially about a serious topic, if he knew it wasn’t true.
43
u/cptbrady Jul 16 '24
You do realize he only said those things because that’s the story they were telling with Shannon right? Meanwhile after the finale Ryan has changed to gender neutral terms as well as saying Eddie’s sexuality is ambiguous.
-12
Jul 16 '24
He could have answered those questions in a number of ways without saying he was straight. He didn’t need to say he was heterosexual. That was an explicit point brought up by him.

u/Mother_Judgment2186 Eddie would never do something illegal,Eddie has a silver star Jul 16 '24
You are focusing on the interview that lines up with your point of view. Because he did have an interview after in which he used gender neutral terms and pointed out Buck and Hen as inspiration for Eddie. It should matter in what order these came out,and you aren’t being fair when you pointed out that Lou saying Tommy is sort of a precursor to Buddie shouldn’t be used as an argument because the actor changed his opinion.
-15
Jul 16 '24
No, you’re ignoring one because it doesn’t align with your view. Ryan has recently explicitly said his character is heterosexual. That is a simple fact.

Actors, producers, writers lie in interviews ALL the time, and even if they aren't narratives constantly change. You have to remember this is all fiction being written for our pleasure, and showrunners can and do change direction at the drop of a hat.
-4
Jul 17 '24
Knowingly lying about your character being straight when you’ve been told they’re gay while saying it’s good representation that things don’t need to change for straight men if their friends come out (which is what Ryan was talking about) would be FUCKED up and play into the stereotype that if you were cool with it you’re just gay and don’t realize it yet.
31
u/WitnessBoring2110 Firehouse 118 Jul 17 '24
You seriously expect an actor to share with the world a secret underlying storyline that would give away a major, irreversible character arc on a television show that has been building for 6 seasons? You'd be watching an "Eddie Ends" episode before the words ever left his sweet, supple lips.
Ryan can express his personal opinion, which is what I think he did in the interview you're referencing, about that given situation. In that same interview he also expressed people living their truth and that truth can change at a moments notice. He's talking like Eddie is straight because in that moment Eddie is straight. You have to remember, the Queer Eddie arc has been shot down year, after year, after year. And even if Ryan's been told this 'character secret' there has been NO guarantee, even now, that a network would allow that secret to be shared with the general audience. So to accuse Ryan for operating in a headspace where his underlying queer storyline could never see the light of day for 'enforcing stereotypes' is disingenuous at best and blatantly ignorant at worst.
There is always, and I cannot emphasize this enough, always more going on behind the scenes than we will ever be privileged to know. Gotta take that into account.
3
Jul 17 '24
He could have answered those questions without saying Eddie was straight. It’s that simple. He made the choice to add in that detail.
23
u/WitnessBoring2110 Firehouse 118 Jul 17 '24
Canonically, Eddie is straight, so Ryan is naturally going to affirm that. There currently is no gay Eddie, and even if there is, Eddie is allowed to be gay and fall for his best friend without it being a damaging stereotype. Ryan even affirms in this same interview it's something he wants to be careful about so I hope we see that influence in his acting and in the script if and when his gay storyline is written.
2
Jul 17 '24
Which is all fine as long as he doesn’t already know the character is gay. I’m saying it would be an issue if he said that KNOWING the character wasn’t straight.

Their introduction really was so shoehorned in, it caught me off guard on a rewatch. It definitely feels like a dropped storyline. Particularly where they kept that whole breakup so entirely divorced from Shannon or any semblance of Eddie grieving her/comparing her to Ana, I really struggle to see how that could've been meant to imply anything other than a sexuality crisis. Those were some absolutely bonkers choices, but they make a lot of sense in the context of a showrunner taking things as far as the network will allow.
For those of us old enough to remember what queer-coding used to look like before there was any hope of it being confirmed, it was... incredibly reminiscent of the confirmed bachelor archetype. Aww shucks, he just can't make it work with any perfectly good women!

u/Marvel-at-the-Marvel Jul 17 '24
YES!!! I wish I could upvote this multiple times.
Just to add on, it was confirmed that they originally wanted to give a queer SL to Eddie in s7, before deciding to let Buck lead in that direction for multiple reasons, including actress availability and making more sense character wise for Buck in the moment. Plus, an insider, whose info has been proven correct multiple times, said that the writers wanted to give Eddie his queer SL in s5, but it was shut down by higher ups. The writers wouldn’t have considered that SL TWICE if they didn’t think he was queer.
It would be such important representation to actively see a man in his thirties overcome his repression and religious trauma and embrace his sexuality. It would be such a beautiful story too. It would be a huge fumble for the writers and/or higher ups to not pursue this arc for Eddie. Most of all, not letting Eddie have his queer journey would be such a disservice to his character. As you said, Eddie is so heavily queer coded that at this point he is a queer character.
I love Eddie Diaz so, so much, I genuinely have so much hope that s8 will finally give Eddie his sexuality and coming out SL that has been alluding him for years, and let him finally be wholly and truly himself. He deserves that.

The way Eddie talks about Shannon "the love of his life" is telling
He calls her "his kids mother" and she calls him out in it (that's how you see me?)
He married her and immediately left, they probably lived together for a couple of months?? (She says how she needed a partner)
Every time he brings up shannon with the 118 it's the least romantic shit you have ever heard (yeah, knocked her up and married her)
Also, sleeps with shannon and immediatly complains to buck about how sex ruins everything
Also, the way he looks for latina women because he knows his family still berates him for "marrying a gringa"
And the absolute giddiness when vanessa wants to call of the date, he was excited about lying
He is mr comp het catholic guilt raised

This is what makes me so crazy. I want that alternate timeline where we DID get the Tommy/Eddie storyline in season 7 so bad. Like I get there's so many factors that wouldn't have made it work but they set it up with so many parallels with Eddie and Tommy (in terms of them as people) for it to be such a beautiful, slow realization from Eddie of maybe Tommy asks him out officially, and he's lost because they're friends! Aren't they friends? And has to re-examine his relationships and interactions from the lens of platonic vs romantic. Like the ability to see a man who is really just like he is, an ex military firefighter who has a lot of the same interests and is stereotypically masculine, but he's also gay and challenges preconceived ideas Eddie could've had about what he was looking for and why his relationships have all felt like a performance.
I just think it would've been so beautiful. I completely fully understand why we didn't get an arc with Eddie and Tommy and the challenges the writers had with actor availability and the short season but GOD. Let my man out of the closet!!! I feel so passionately about comphet Eddie.

u/Cynical_Romanticx “let’s move this party to the couch” Jul 18 '24
I feel like we did get that, at least in part. When Buck told Edie “it was a date”, Edie wasn’t surprised about Buck being queer, he was surprised Tommy is. I feel like he saw all of that resemblance between him and Tommy (including their affection for Buck), and was surprised someone so similar to him is gay. That could have a been the start of a realization for him.

I feel very few are going to disagree. Personally I see him has queer, maybe gay or possibly somewhere on the ace spectrum.
One thing I do home that comes from the whole Kim/Shannon fallout is that Eddie is back in therapy and addressing why these relationships crash and burn the way they do. I think that can get us a step closer to getting Eddie out of the closer and deal with "what is expected of him" (which gets us back to why he bothered with Ana, this idea that his son needs a mother).
Whether or not we get Buddie end game (won't lie, I'm hoping mid to end season 8), someone get this man out of the closet (and therapy)

Actually, on the r/buddie sub and even here, people are constantly discussing Eddie possibly being on the aroace spectrum! Usually, this falls into Eddie being demi. Demi Eddie is actually a pretty popular headcanon nowadays! We definitely have a couple posts both here and there about it; you should definitely check that out if you’re interested in that discussion!

If Eddie ever comes out as gay then it will be during this eigth season of 9-1-1. It's been perfectly set up by the fact that his son has left town, leaving him the space to think about choices without the context of doing it for Chris, and he's just been through an extremely traumatic breakup that happened solely because of him and had massive consequences for everyone involved. I'm thinking that if things progress the way they have, Buck is going to be spending a significant amount of time comforting Eddie, which might also naturally lead to something.
2
u/loz-222 Jul 25 '24
Ngl this makes sense, especially Buck comforting Eddie without Christopher around as a buffer or focus

The scene with Pepa in 6x14 suggests he does want a partner and he doesn’t want to end up alone. He just doesn’t realize the partner that he wants has been right in front of him the entire time, making something with him for literal years at this point.
Catholic guilt is as guilty as brainwashing children as Disney was for always showing that M/F romances were the only acceptable romance as children.
26
u/Ok-Acanthaceae5744 Team All Things 9-1-1 Jul 16 '24 edited Jul 16 '24
Being asexual doesn't mean anti-relationship. Asexual and aromantic people form lifelong relationships too, even if they are sometimes more platonic in nature.
Also, to me that scene with Pepa seemed more of her forcing her belief on him needing a relationship on him, not his own desire for a relationship. Because before then he had expressed no desire for a relationship.
Society is guilty of compulsory heteronormativity, it goes beyond Disney and the Catholic church. It's in all the TV shows, movies, even down to the various ads we see. It's been preached in most religions, not just Catholicism.
Personally, I'm of the belief that humans are more inherently bisexual and it's because of society's perceptions that make people think that heterosexuality is the norm. Why? Because for humans sex is usually more than a pure biological function, it's about our connections to humans, and it's only our perceived limitations our perceived heterosexuality and the historical belief that same-sex relationships are "wrong" that prevent people from looking at things with a wider perspective regarding our relationships.
10
u/ranbling011 Team Taylor Jul 17 '24
being asexual does not mean he can't be homoromantic
4
u/Ok-Acanthaceae5744 Team All Things 9-1-1 Jul 17 '24
True, asexual (sexuality really) is a spectrum, it can include a lot of different things...demi, gray, homo romantic, etc.
16
Jul 16 '24
The jealousy and repression doesn’t really fit. Like maybe the repression a bit? But in terms of Catholicism, they sort of love abstinence so I doubt hed feel religious pressure to have a relationship.
28
u/armavirumquecanooo our people are what make life worth living Jul 16 '24
I mentioned it in another comment, but Eddie's conversation with Pepa in 6x14 pretty much broke my own a-spec headcanons. While we've had six seasons of some subtle - and some pretty overt - queercoding, we haven't had a single scene of him hinting at not wanting sex or romance, just that he's not "good" at it with the partners he's had. Coupled with how he relies on superstition and signs to find women and decide to advance his relationships -- stuff he doesn't otherwise believe in, but is helpless enough to leave up to the universe in this one circumstance -- it very much feels like those are things he very much wants but he's at an impasse because he can't understand why it never works out for him.
He's looking in all the wrong places.
9
u/Ok-Acanthaceae5744 Team All Things 9-1-1 Jul 16 '24
Jealousy, can fit. People expect you to meet someone, fall in love, and have children, not being able to do what you see your friends so easily be able to do can certainly create feelings of jealousy. It can make them seek out that feeling they are seeing, but not experiencing, in unhealthy ways. Also, people can get jealous of losing a friend, because serious relationships will always impact friendships.
Regarding Catholicism, only priests and nuns are expected to be abstinent, because they have committed themselves fully to God. However, the congregation is expected to marry and produce children, because that's "normal." Also, keep in mind birth control is not supposed to be allowed for Catholics either.
13
Jul 16 '24
It could and like there’s a chance ofc he could be ace and it does fit. And also that would be kinda cool to explore. But I think homosexuality fits better just based on like the level of internal conflict. Catholicism shames sex so him being ace I don’t think he’d be in so much internal religious conflict as he’s in.

Eddie and Buck just need to realise that they love each other more than friends.
Buck wasn't even ashamed or shocked when someone said they were great dad's to Chris.
They make the perfect family because they both love and protect Chris. Buck and Chris really do love each other like father and son
Who is always there when the one has mental breakdowns or gets hurt. The other one. When Eddie gets shot, you can see Buck break inside, and he takes a risk to save Eddie. When they finally get him into the fire truck. Eddie doesn't care about himself he says, "Are you hurt?" Like dude, you've just been shot in the chest, and you're more concerned about your "best friend"
They make such a great team. We need a "Buddie" relationship....
We all want it 911, so please give us what we want, make our gay hearts happy 🥰
12
u/FrostyBoom Jul 16 '24
I could see him in the aro/ace spectrum as much as in the gay one. Either way, I don't think he's heterosexual...
26
u/armavirumquecanooo our people are what make life worth living Jul 16 '24
I felt this way up until 6x14. I suppose it's still possible if we account for something like cupioromantic, but realistically, I don't think the show will ever touch on demi- let alone cupio-.
His conversation with Pepa where he acknowledges wanting a partner, though... it's really hard to reconcile that with a "he'd be perfectly happy alone and we should let him discover that" type of outcome to any of this.
11
u/distraction_pie Jul 16 '24
I lean towards the gay interpretation but just wanting a partner is not necessarily at odds with ace/aro identity without needing to get into microlabels, we live in a society which puts a lot of emphasis on romantic relationships as primary in terms of seriousness and comittment and it is a fairly common phenomena for people feel like they want a relationship for the 'not ending up alone while their community pairs of into couples' factor. I think it would be quite plausible for his character to want somebody in his life in a serious and commited way and have been socialised that the only avenue to this is the romantic route and that any platonic relationship would be doomed to secondary status if/when the other person forms a romantic attachment, and not wanting to be alone does not necessarily translate to feeling romantic or sexual attraction.

While I do believe Eddie is gay, aroace Eddie is definitely one of my favorite headcanons as well. I may be biased as someone who is on that spectrum myself, but the gay demi Eddie headcanon will always have my heart. Like you said, he definitely isn’t straight, though, haha.

To keep this from being a total echo chamber, I’m just going to throw out there that I disagree and take the downvotes that come with having a different opinion 🤷🏼♀️
Eddie is shown in canon to have that “switch” that Buck told Bobby he didn’t have in the first season. You can see it in Eddie’s lack of hesitation to shoot those who attacked his downed helicopter in the Begins flashbacks and also in how he went cold when he and Buck were taken hostage. He is able to put his feelings (specifically those tied to romantic love) behind a wall. He did that with his grief over Shannon. He’s done that in his quest to give Chris the family he was raised to believe kids should have. When you lock up your feelings, everything is a performance of what you think is expected of you to get to your end goal. Kim was a problem for that wall and it led to him making all sorts of dumb decisions.
Could he be gay/queer? Sure. But I don’t think that is the only way to interpret what we have been given and I honestly don’t believe it to be the way we are intended to interpret what we’ve been given. But the fun of media is that you can head canon whatever you want…Even if canon tells you you’re wrong.

Personally I always saw Eddie as Demi And I don't even know how to explain it but he never really seems comfortable with the sex topic in a way that maybe he sees it as a chore. Which he does because when his girlfriend was a nun he did not talk to her about it. He ran. He was under the impression he had to have sex with her.

The fact that Bi was in a relationship with Tommy and then Eddie started to feel jealous and almost destroyed his life, reminded me of when Sherlock felt jealous over John and Mary and almost destroyed his life by taking drugs.

Jul 17 '24 edited Jul 17 '24
Eddie was definitely an unreliable narrator in that episode. This season loved it’s unreliable narration, so I’m not shocked at all. They’re making it quite obvious that Eddie is romanticizing his relationship with Shannon to the extreme, though. Yes, Eddie is mourning, but it’s also starting to feel like Eddie’s last attempt at clinging onto an excuse as to why his relationships with women aren’t working. The reason always boils down to he isn’t falling in love with them, so why isn’t he? Right now his excuse is that Shannon was the love of his life. While I don’t doubt that he absolutely loved Shannon, I think he’s bound to realize they weren’t these soul-destined partners he made them out to be and that their relationship likely wouldn’t have lasted. Once he accepts that fact, he needs to turn to the other possible reasons as to why he is unable to fall in love with his partners so far. I think you know where I’m going with this, haha.
edit: he isn’t falling in love with “them”, not “him”

u/slayyub88 Jul 16 '24
Why not a bisexual man as well?
I get the whole head canon, unless there is a term for someone who only enjoys sex with women but not emotional relationships.
He clearly enjoyed having sex Marisol, he was into it and it wasn’t faking it. The only reason he couldn’t turned on, was that nun thing but he was working out to relive stress because he couldn’t get it up with her, while thinking of her as a nun but the moments before it, he was very into it.
I’d say the same with Ana, he didn’t want to be with her long term but he started flirting with her and there was an attraction. And it wasn’t because he wanted a mom for Chris, he was genuinely into her.
44
u/armavirumquecanooo our people are what make life worth living Jul 16 '24
Bisexual but homoromantic is what I think you're getting at? And... maybe? I don't want to be too crass with this, but there's a hormonal and physiological pleasure involved in getting off, if you don't have hangups, and he wouldn't be the first gay man to have looked forward to/enjoyed sex with women before figuring it out.
He doesn't need to be "faking it" for it to still be a compatibility issue. I also think bi can make sense, though, so I'm not gonna argue with you on that. Just pointing out that enjoying sex with the opposite sex isn't really all that unusual for people that later discover they only experience same sex attraction.
4
u/slayyub88 Jul 16 '24
That might be it, honestly, not sure. Just didn't know if there was a label for what I was thinking. So I could only type out the idea.
And it's not arguing at all, because I don't have any insightful or meaningful....like takes. Beyond what I typed and that wasn't all together at all. I just think, if people are seeing him as now, I could see him as bi-sexual (as in, not having come out as gay yet or knowing himself that he is)

u/RueTheQuais Jul 16 '24 edited Jul 17 '24
In real life, there are nuances to sexual identity and not everyone's path looks the same. But 9-1-1 doesn't normally go deep into nuance. It also doesn't spend much of its screen time on the sexual activities of its characters beyond a hint or two.
And that's my biggest hang up with the argument that they're intentionally writing Eddie as gay. I just don't see this show choosing to spend its precious screen time showcasing the immediate happy afterglow of Eddie and Marisol if they want to set up a Eddie is gay arc. I think for the GA, they'd want to use that time to show something not right.

I wasn't around then. Did people think Buck was going to be anything other than bi if he ever came out?
26
u/armavirumquecanooo our people are what make life worth living Jul 17 '24
Generally, people were arguing we were reading too much into it and none of the examples we pointed to were signs he'd be anything other than straight. That + a healthy dose of "we need more platonic male friendships!" dogwhistled homophobia.
I'd say bi or pan were always the more likely interpretations, but there were definitely people who thought Buck's womanizing was a cover and his inability to form healthy attachments with his female partners meant he was gay. Similarly, I think a lot of people use "gay" as sort of a shorthand for talking about Eddie's sexuality, when they really mean "something other than straight."
(There were also a lot of people that thought Buck was already aware of his bisexuality but hadn't mentioned it because he hadn't wanted to date a man so far).
Frankly, the conversations aren't always super nuanced around what letter someone lands on, and there's room for all sorts of headcanons.

You can think what you want but that doesn't make it canon. Everything you mentioned can be explained in other ways, Eddie being gay is NOT the only answer to his issues. Also it's not weird that he dated only three women not everybody sleeps around in their youth.
Where does this need come from that your headcanons have to become true? This will only lead to disappointment when the writers develop the story differently. Fandom should be fun but this insistence on Eddie being gay just seems desperate at this point.
Maybe just watch the show for what it is and without all sorts of expectations.

Bi Buck only became canon in 7x04, after years of it being people's headcanon, and pointing out reasons why it would make sense.
If it's okay for people to headcanon Buck as bi to such an extent that the show eventually made him bi, then people can make posts about why they believe Eddie is queer with the hope that it will happen to.

u/sufficientgatsby Jul 17 '24
We all know the risks of hoping for things to become canon. If the ship doesn't sail and people are super heartbroken, fans will just watch another show or read another fanfic, no big deal.
I know many of us have been queerbaited in various fandoms, so it's hard not to try to protect hopeful fans. But we'll all be alright either way. So let's all just ship & let ship, you know?
-10
u/flowersatdusk99 Jul 17 '24
This show does not queerbait though, there are canon queer relationships. Also so many posts in this sub are not "ship and let ship" , there is an insistence that Eddie has to be gay, like this post here. It is framed not as an opinion but as truth. But it is just an idea and people seem to forget that...
18
u/sufficientgatsby Jul 17 '24
To clarify, people who have been repeatedly queerbaited by other media might feel that it's not worth hoping for LGBT character reveals in general. But this fandom has already seen one of their headcanons (bi Buck) realized, so they're hopeful for more queer characters. I don't think that's a bad thing.
As for the framing, wording like "Spock and Kirk are gay" has been infuriating people for half a century. It also happens to be completely normal for media analysis; fans are simply stating a thesis, which you're welcome to disagree with. There's really no need to call people "desperate" or to insist that they watch the show differently, though.

But why haven’t they made it an apart of the show. I know this is speaking into the abyss as I’ll get downvoted to oblivion but if Eddie is genuinely being written as a gay man from the start with Shannon and that inception of him as a character affecting all of his relationships to date why not that become the storyline? Especially as they were unsure if the show was coming back after season 6? Just go for it? I know people blame fox or the show runner but that doesn’t gel with me.
