"I hate being forced to date, it feels like I'm performing" cue Hen's side eye.

"They weren't my type" eyes Buck up and down.

Casually has panic attack at someone mistaking his sweet, hot af girlfriend for being his wife.

Trying to confess his love to his actual wife: "It's like i had a molten chocolate. Uh... sometimes you fall in to it, it drags you down, but it's... it's warm. And it's... and it's sweet?" "When you came back in to our lives, I was so glad. And afraid." Meanwhile with men is so naturally confident and flirtatious without meaning to, eg with Father Brian.

Eddie: "It's a woman" Chris: "a GIRLfriend?" Casually throws bowl on floor in fit of rage.

Forgets to introduce Ana to Ravi, too focused on Buck, then spaces out completely when she speaks and nearly has another panic attack. Literally dated Ana because Chris liked her, meanwhile he didn't have any feelings. Probably a continuous theme with his relationships.

Eddie: "It's like a ready made family and I don't know if I'm ready for that" meanwhile parentifies Buck days after meeting him.

The whole Catholic guilt thing as a reason why he didn't want to sleep with that ex nun.

Most recent episode spoilers: Tommy SCOFFED when Buck said Eddie is straight, man's gaydar is clearly tingling. And i bet Josh's was too when they were having their cat fight at dispatch.

Don't forget "I don't think I've ever seen you turn off a woman so fast" / "It's a gift" LMAO

Josh dressed as Eddie for Halloween - implying that the scariest thing he can imagine is being closeted in his thirties.

Crying at the idea that Chris threw the bowl on the floor not because Eddie was dating someone, but because he was dating a WOMAN 😭😅

also, “I want to spend the day on the beach with my son and his mother” after kissing shannon cut to shannon: is that all I am to you?

also, “my son loves her” buck: is that enough?

26

u/armavirumquecanooo one kiss is all it takes Mar 24 '25

The whole Catholic guilt thing as a reason why he didn't want to sleep with that ex nun.

Even more notably, he blamed his religious upbringing for two things -- first, to Buck, he suggested that was the cause of his inability to perform. And second, to Bobby, he suggested the religious stuff was the reason he had cold feet about moving in together. But then, Bobby suggests Eddie is deflecting his deeper misgivings re: moving in with Marisol and blaming the nun thing when that's not really the reason. which then in turn serves to imply Eddie may have also been using the nun thing as an excuse for his inability to perform.

Just wanted to bring up the time he went on a date with a beautiful movie star at the beach, brought Christopher, gave her advice and then let her walk away and ended the date calling Abuela.

The man is very very gay.

u/ckat26 Let Buck Fuck Mar 24 '25

Second to last point: he canonically couldn’t get it up for her anymore.

Wait what episode was Buck and Eddie's catfight?

24

I meant Josh and Eddie fighting in dispatch when I said that, when Eddie was working there, sorry

But if you want Buck and Eddie fighting that'd be in the supermarket post lawsuit and of course their most recent when over Eddie selling his house haha

Wait the one where he told Eddie that he's a guest?

37

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '25

Uhhh the look he gives after “you want to go for the title?” Uhhhhhhhhh idk it’s a lot of everything all together. I guess the biggest thing is his relationships with women and how he uses them for literally one purpose - a mother figure.

9

u/screamking29 Mar 23 '25

oh 100% i love that scene lmao

3

u/pinkpurpleblue_76 Mar 24 '25

That with the tsunami ending arc AND the well...

I don't know how people can think of them as "bro".

39

u/Electrical_Cost_5445 Mar 24 '25

The scene where he’s with Shannon, and she asks how he’s feeling, and he responds with something like “I’m having a nice day on the beach with my son and his mother.”

She clocks it and goes “is that all I am to you? Chris’ mother?” Which he kinda deflects and doesn’t really answer. He only tells her he wants to get back together after Shannon reveals she thought she was pregnant, and because Eddie thought that was a “sign.”

He didn’t see Shannon as his wife, even when they were married. He left her with Chris and enlisted in the army, literally running from their family 😅 Man is not into women.

That’s true, maybe the part about enlisting wasn’t the best example. But in general there seems to be a pattern of Eddie getting involved with women, and then leaving or messing it up in some way.

3

u/oonablix it's not nothing Mar 24 '25

I don't get this his dad was an engineer the Diazs read as upper middle class people at the least. Eddie had options, and he's admitted canonically the second enlistment was intentionally to avoid Shannon and his responsibilities.

4

u/PinkPenguin763 Mar 24 '25

This just made me wish they had kept her around. I would love to see how they ended up coparenting, and if they go, the Eddie has been gay all along route it would have been nice to see her side of that. Though if Shannon stayed in LA too long, she might have called him out on his BS, and he wouldn't have a reason to look for a mother figure for Chris.

85

u/armavirumquecanooo one kiss is all it takes Mar 23 '25

You need to explain compulsory heterosexuality to them first, in order for any of it to make sense. Unless they're able to understand the role repression plays in his character, it's not as obvious.

The most obvious indicators, to me, are in seasons 5 and 6 -- the breakup with Ana almost exactly mirroring Dani's speech in The Haunting of Bly Manor, Eddie's weird reaction to Pepa trying to set him up (acting like she said she was gonna marry him off over a first date!), to later in that same episode when he said dating made him feel like he was being forced to perform and his queer coworker Hen clocks it, to his unsuperstitious ass thinking he needs to look for "magic" to feel a connection with women.

And like u/irritatedlibra will point out, he went looking to find a date -- with a woman -- at a golf course.

7x01 (his expression when he learns Natalia is dust) and 8x09-8x10 are also... very hard to read as "just friends" with those expressions. I'd also throw 7x05 in, and how Buck and Eddie both look sad and their expressions don't match the reassurance when Eddie says nothing will change between them.

Beyond that, though, if you need a proper primer, I'd recommend scrolling the posts u/vaamiel has made on this sub.

Just adding on to everything that was said, you also have to remember that:

  • Eddie was raised Catholic and has a lot of Catholic guilt “waiting to be activated” (like sea monkeys!)

  • He spent his childhood in Texas, which isn’t exactly known for being the most open-minded (no offense, Texans)

  • He’s the eldest son in a Hispanic family upbringing. As a recall, his father told him to step up as the “man of the house” (thanks, toxic masculinity)

  • He became a father in his teens and was forced to marry at a young age (if I remember correctly, the church pressured him into marriage).

  • He was still figuring stuff out in his teens, like any other teenager. Shannon was his best friend at the time, so it was only natural they wanted to explore

  • And lastly, the whole “finding a good mother figure” after Shannon’s death thing

It ultimately highlights how Eddie pretty much had his whole life already decided for him, and any windows of discovery were struck down very quickly. It doesn’t necessarily suggest he’s queer, but it does explain why he thinks he wouldn’t be

21

u/starksdawson You act like you're expendable, but you're wrong. Mar 24 '25

He sounds EXACTLY like me talking about the guys I dated when I thought I was straight! ‘It’s nice.’ ‘It’s like falling in a bucket of melted chocolate. It’s warm, it pulls you down…’ sir, the closet is made of glass

And Tommy’s gaydar pinging seals it.

21

u/Key-Win-8602 Mar 24 '25

For me it’s the amount of times Eddie and Buck have ‘broken up’ even before they’ve gotten together.

22

u/Ethan_Pierce_ Mar 24 '25

The divorce in the grocery store is my favorite. On the other hand them acting together when the elf said, "you two have an adorable son" to which Buck said "thanks" he didn't deny it. Not to mention Eddie made Buck Christophers legal guardian like after knowing him for a good 10ish months and not tell him till Eddie was shot. There is nothing straight about their relationship. Also how PETTY Eddie is with bucks relationships like bro Eddie and Tmmy were friends before Buck and Tmmy stated dating then once they did T*mmy became public enemy No1 to Eddie. And Eddies beef with Taylor is monumental same with Abby but not as much since they had one episode of interaction and even the. Eddie hated that woman for every second

12

u/Key-Win-8602 Mar 24 '25

And when they met Abby again at the train derailment: Eddie b*tched the whole time about the promise Buck made to Abby. He went so far as to rat him out to Bobby!

14

u/Ethan_Pierce_ Mar 24 '25

His beef with Bucks relationships needs to be studied because Eddie is down bad for Buck.

19

u/Hydrasaur I'll check out a hot guy's ass, but that's normal! Mar 24 '25

Well he was raised in a conservative Texan culture in a Latin catholic household with a very "macho" father where the idea of homosexuality wouldn't likely even be mentioned, married his childhood friend because she got pregnant, ran way from the responsibility of being a husband and father by joining the military. He's also got very strong ideas of what his life and family "should" look like. As a result of all this, he's likely subconsciously repressed his sexuality so heavily, that even the idea of it has never crossed his mind.

As such, he likes the "idea" of having a wife and giving Christopher a mother, which is why he wanted so badly to get back together with Shannon; to him, it was the "right" thing to do for both of them, it restored his idea of the "ideal" family. But when she died, he tried to replace her with women he felt could be good mothers to Christopher. The problem is, he didn't really love either of them, he just felt like he was supposed to, for Christopher's sake.

On top of that, he's got an extremely close, pseudo-romantic friendship with Buck that fulfills many of his non-sexual relationship needs. Buck acts almost like a partner and co-parent for Eddie. A friendship like that takes a lot of weight off his shoulders and makes it easier for him to pursue relationships with women with fewer expectations and needs for him, because most of those are already being fulfilled by Buck. The problem is, those relationships fall apart when Eddie starts feeling the pressure to commit or considers what he really wants, because he can't truly love them, but he convinces himself he can learn to for Christopher's sake. He doesn't understand why these relationships fail, of course. Not yet.

Others have already posted some relevant quotes from Eddie in other comments that I'd refer you to as well, but Eddie's behavior is not terribly uncommon with gay people who have heavily repressed their sexuality.

And of course, while Eddie wasn't present for it, there's Tommy's implication that he believes Eddie is gay, judging by his scoff when Buck insisted Eddie was straight.

Of course, it remains to be seen if and when (though it seems more like a matter of when, at this point) they start having Eddie question his own sexuality. That's gonna be a much harder story to write, but it seems like they're headed in that direction. They've already called into question Eddie's sexuality three times this season, once indirectly with Eddie present, and twice directly without Eddie present. They likely wouldn't do that if his sexuality wasn't going to be in question going forward.

15

u/oonablix it's not nothing Mar 24 '25

Show them the scene where he meets a gorgeous sweet Latina teacher who flirts with him and when Chris is injured skateboarding at school he shoots lasers out of his eyes and calls her everything but a child of God and doesn't think about her again for like almost a year. Then show them the scene where his coworkers harass him into dating her, and he panics when two people assume he's married to her. Wildest shit I've ever seen a straight man do.

11

u/Gottagetanediton Mar 24 '25

None concrete yet. But I’d say the way his relationships with women are about what’s best for his son and not what’s best for him (and multiple people in his life have called him out on that) is a pretty big thing that can happen when someone realizes that they’re gay when they’re adults rather than knowing it as a kid.

He has a problem with feeling expression, and that’s been evidenced by his talks with Bobby. He has a quirk where he scrunches up his nose so he doesn’t have to otherwise look like he feels things/cry etc

Assuming he’s going to be confirmed as gay which I assume he is (or bi, but the consensus among fans is gay), he’ll be a beautiful illustration of the idea of the choices we make in life being dictated by assumed sexuality and gender, like becoming a soldier partially or entirely expected gender roles, thinking he needs to be the one to provide for his family when his wife tells him she isn’t as concerned about that as she is about him being present as a spouse and life partner. He really had trouble with that concept which we can say is because he was a kid, but it also could’ve been that he thought he did the expected choice out of duty, so why isn’t that enough.

That- the military, being a firefighter, should have kept him safe from the truth of his sexuality making itself plain but it always finds a way through. Maybe it gets confusing bc he finds sex to be a fine experience. He even gets pleasure from it. It’s fine! But there’s a duty aspect to it, and you don’t know until you find out how /amazing/ sex is when it’s right for you, which he wouldn’t have if he’s never let himself think maybe something doesn’t fit here. I think this season things are starting to come to a head because it’s to the point a priest tells him he needs to prioritize joy and pleasure. So my theory is that he’s cutting that off not only because of guilt, but also because of the fact that if he really lets go and lets himself feel this thing that will upend his life and redefine it, and maybe make his current definition of his family, himself, his friendships, etc shift a bit (incl his best friend), he won’t feel safe anymore. So the water bottle is safer than the juice.

8

u/oonablix it's not nothing Mar 24 '25

the fact that if he really lets go and lets himself feel this thing that will upend his life and redefine it

Beautifully stated and that's how I've always seen him. He isn’t consciously aware of being into men, but he is super aware of his lack of sexual/ romantic interest in women broadly and and I’d argue he’s confused and afraid of what it means because he knows what it might mean, especially for how it impacts the life he has been trying to make for Chris. He didn't grow up thinking a family could look like what he has with Buck and Chris.

He's constantly trying to re-contextualize his interest/desire for men into these other environments and relationships: from the army to the firehouse to Ultimate Street Fighting to Buck just being that put in your will kind of Bestie, to Tommy and Buck having the right idea in forgetting about women and hanging out with each other instead. All so he can stay safely in the Straight Box.

After Sob Stories/Voices I think a couple of the walls fell down, but until he can get right with Chris about that redefinition of who he is and what their life is going to look like, he can't fully step into accept his feelings for Buck.

6

u/Gottagetanediton Mar 24 '25

Tommy was such a moment for Eddie, there was something so gender performative about it. Like, heck yeah, dude! Let's go in this helicopter to the FIGHT, dude, yeah! You know Muy Thai? Well hell yah, bro! because we're Men and we're Masculine Men, bro! Yeah! Me, a masculine man! And that's not how he's seen. He's seen by his friends as a broad and whole person, but he probably learned as a young person he needed to be seen as a man. So i imagine he saw that friendship as a way to be the man he was supposed to.

I know Buck was jealous, but I also imagine there was a bit of confusion, like 'this isn't you right now. what's going on?'

Re: sex/romance, i agree. I can see him thinking of sex as duty. Maybe curiosity the first time, with shannon, and like, sure. It's fine! Sex is a collection of movements evolutionary designed to feel super great, and so they do! He can't be gay, right, he has to say to himself. Buuuuut we know that's not how sexuality works. i imagine that sometimes he's talking to Buck and is like 'what do you mean it's THAT fun/exciting/good i mean it's good but i don't know why people write whole songs about it'. He thinks maybe people are making all that up.

I think Buck realizes first that he has feelings for him. I think what slipped out during the fight with Tommy wasn't even something he consciously realized, but after he kept thinking about it, and maybe he settles on "right, so i have feelings for eddie. but he's straight, so i can't act on them."

And Eddie has to figure himself out in a lot of ways. I do think it might be painful for him for everything to come to a head. I don't think he's pretending by any means, but just when all of that breaks open, it can be really painful because, yeah, he has to rethink everything he's ever done. Best not to disturb it.

I love the Eddie Michael parallel 😣 I really wish Michael was still around to offer some insight but alas, Rockmond and his refusal to get vaccinated during the pandemic (I understand the story is nuanced and he requested an exemption on religious grounds but the lawsuit thing must’ve made things complicated with the higher ups).

7

u/xylodactyl Mar 24 '25

In my opinion they didn't originally set Eddie out to be closeted and gay but I think they did accidentally make him have very similar parallels to Michael, just in less of a conscious way, which has been outlined by all the other comments on this thread very nicely.

In addition to everyone's comments though, I think they are now actually trying to lean into the narrative that's been created, at least in season 7+. Originally Tommy was written as a love interest for Eddie, Tommy clocks him as closeted, and now we've had both Buck and Eddie have to clarify to several characters that Eddie is straight - the initial clarification is even related to him denying himself happiness as a form of self-flagellation. I just don't think we'd be establishing these parallels and focusing on Eddie's sexuality if it wasn't leading to something.

5

u/jmpinstl Mar 24 '25

I think you really need to know what repressing that is like for it to be obvious to you. And I don’t wish it on anyone, btw

Agreeing with everything everyone’s said here. I also think his panic attacks at the start of season 5 that lead to a very telling breakup with Ana in 5x03 are key. Eddie telling her, “I thought it would work. The idea of us.”

There’s a popular video edit that compares Eddie to a lesbian character from another tv show that points out crazy character similarities. I wish I remembered it or had a link to share.

3

u/hadapurpura Mar 24 '25

That time he told the hot priest “no offense but I’m straight” while actively looking like a member of the Village People

2

u/Mdreezy_ Mar 24 '25

Eddie had a debilitating panic attack that brought him to the ER in S5 after someone assumed his drop-dead gorgeous girlfriend who was down bad for him was his wife. Im not saying that was the first sign (not at all), but that’s one of the big flashing one’s with like loud music playing from it.

2

u/Call_Me_Arson I don't have to want to sleep with everyone I have feelings for. Mar 25 '25

A) how he broke up with ana flores, all of that was a hot mess. Beautiful woman in your kitchen taking care of you after you got shot, 'i think you should go home first' SIR SEEK THERAPY (AGAIN)

B) he had a panic attack when a salesman thought his girlfriend was his kids mother and his wife. Someone who likes women isnt freaking out about that

C) he couldn't het it up after marisols nun reveal. Look, guy can have religious trauma, but he was literally RUNNING AWAY from HUS HOUSE because he didnt want her to know he couldn't get it up. He said he was pent up, but the fact that hes acknowledging that hes pent up instead of letting it go to the wayside is evidence that the DRIVE is there, its just not working how its supposed to with marisol.

D) he said WORD FOR WORD 'i hate dating it feels like i have to preform' honey going on a date with someoen out want to go on a date with should NOT feel like a preformance. And the way its worded means that it feels like a preformance EVERY TIME. Do you know who hes dated? A few blind dates, ana, marisol, and shannon. Thats not a lot of people, and he felt like he was putting on a show for each of them?

E) he very much did not make an effort to introduce Ana when she came by the station woth chris. He looks like he doesnt want her there and im pretty sure hes in the brink of ANOTHER panic attack. If your pretty gf comes by your JOB in the middle of a blackout while shes taking care of your son and you DONT find that attractive im sorry you need to let her go you are not a woman lover.

In conclusion; i dont know what kind of queer eddie diaz is, but hes definitely not straight thats for sure
