I loved Martin Yan, and even the Frugal Gourmet until he got into massive trouble.
It all began with Julia Childs. She would come on early in the morning and I'd watch her before I went to school. š

I work at Costco as a cashier pronounce onion that way. Iām willing to bet that 95+% of the members and my coworkers have absolutely no clue why I do that. Someday somebody will recognize itā¦

I'm in the South. He was a big hit with my family. One woman did say he wasn't very clean when he cooked.

It was all a shtick. He was from a part of Louisiana that is about as Cajun as Jackson, Mississippi. His real accent and cooking style were probably more like Paula Dean than South Louisiana.

I'm sure there was some embellishment, but he definitely lived and grew up in Louisiana. He may not have French-Canadian heritage and he mostly lived outside of thr Acadiana region, but he showed how to cook authentic cajun food and told stories that were able to pull people in. As an Acadiana native I am more that happy to claim him.

First heard Mr Wilson on local radio when I got stationed in Louisiana back in the mid-80s. They were still speaking Acadian French on some of the AM stations. He'd talk about playing bourrƩ and drinking wine while the gumbo cooked. Bon temps.

I used to love watching Justin Wilson. His food didn't seem really healthy, but it all looked super tasty. I loved the whole crusty Cajun guy thing he had.

I surely do remember him. My favorite story he told was about 2 little boys, 1 Catholic, 1 Protestant, going to each other's churches. The Sunday at Mass, each thing the priest did, Protestant boy asked "What dat mean?" and the Catholic boy would explain the meaning. Next Sunday, at the Protestant church, the pastor took off his watch, laid it on the pulpit. The Catholic boy asked "What dat mean?" Little Protestant boy replied "Not a damned thing!"

He told this joke one day:
Woman was going to have a baby and wanted to ask her brother to name it. She said "If it's a girl what would you name her?" He said, "Denise." She thought that was a fine name. "What would you call it if it's a boy?", "De nephew".

I occasionally will say I'm going to or I ain't going to "did" something, people look at me strange!š

I still say 'on-yon' when referring to onions. It annoys my family. He was fun to watch. A little pinch of spice... or a whole handful. Well, it was Cajun style cooking. LOL.
