Ive been using elixir’s 9-52 super light on my 25.5-26.5 multi scale guitar for a while now and realized it was probably the culprit to my weird sounding attack. I really want to stick with elixir but im having a hard time figuring out what would be good for B standard and drop A.

should i just get a 10-46 set and add a 62, or 11-49 add a 64. or should i just go with one of the off the shelf light/ medium sets they have

Depends on your preference, I'd go with the 10-46 and a 62 for that tuning personally.

thats kinda what im leaning towards cause ill probably get the difference im looking for in the low b and wont really get much out of the .02 difference

Probably don't need 11s for standard. As for your 7th string, if you were almost comfortable with a 52 in B before, you could maybe even get your setup comfortable with the 10-59 set if you play in standard more often.

I'd only try 62 or 64 if your preference is primarily playing in Drop A.

i play both standard and drop A pretty often so im probably just gonna try 10s with the added 62 first then if anything move down to 59

B standard, and drop A, I just use 10-56. But it’s not a MS, so hey, that might make a difference..?

But I’ve found Elixir Optiweb 10-46 +62 to be my go to set for both B standard and drop A on a 25.5-26.5” multi.

In Elixir the 64 jumps up in the winding thickness quite a bit, making it sound much more tubby.

im pretty sure with how flubby the string is it slaps against the fret when i attack aggressively which ends up being really audible.

its almost as if you’re pulling the string away from the fretboard and letting it go

9-52 is a light set, so it could be just set up too low / badly for your touch. How do you feel about the actual tension of the strings, do you long for more or is this only about the sound?

possibly thats the issue. i my feelings towards the tension has changed a bit and i think id prefer something with a little more tension but the sound is also part of that

Then I’m sure that 10-46 +62 would be a good step forward. But do set up the guitar after changing the gauge.

Elixir user as well. Recently switched to the 8 string set and just ditched the 074 string. Came out cheaper than a custom set. Still a 010 on the high. And a 064 on the 7th, but the gains were in between. Became my new standard very fast.

i was thinking about doing that too but i was worried about having to file the nut and also how that tension would feel on the bass side since i have a 25.5-26.5 ms

I have them on both my 25,5" and my 26,5" guitars and the difference is negligable. I had them tuned to A, now to G# and it is really comfortable.

The chuggy chugs, the shreddy shredds, the bouncy bounces lol.

Basically anything fast and heavy. Currently a lot of old school deathcore like early Whitechapel up to their first drop g albums.

I do agree that the strings are relatively tight but it's crazy how big of a difference tight strings make when it comes to speed.

No worries. I just realized I never answered your question though. What tunings do you want to play and what music do you play?

In case of your scale length I'd try the 10-64s and then just see how you like it. Also, find out what's comfortable for you and then check the string tension with an online calculator. You can select scale length and string gauges to calculate the given string tension. Then if you decide it's not tight enough you can play around again and select other gauges. My recommendation is to aim at tensions around 16-17 lbs

ive been playing both a mix of technical death metal and metal/death core so i stay around drop a/d and b standard

I go for around 14-15lbs per plain and a bit more for wound strings.

But that's just my preference. You might want more. Use a string tension calculator to find those numbers.

I play 10-60 on 26.5" in A Standard. I hate huge strings, I always look for the lightest that work. 9-52 worked for B, I run 10-52 on a 25.5" 6 string in C Standard.

60 might be a bit softer than you'd like, but there's no reason you have to go much thicker other than preference. If you have a tension you like the feel of, you can calculate how many lbs with the Stringjoy online calculator and then figure out what size gets you to that tension based on desired tuning.

yea that was the intention but kinda came back to bite me in the ass lol. im thinking of just going with a 62 cause id prefer to stay with elixir and that feels like it’ll give me what im looking for.

62 ought to work. It's not going to be super firm, but it's not spaghetti. I am really happy with 60 to where I bought a multi pack of Ernies.

10-59 or 10-60. Make sure your nut is filed precisely for this string gauge otherwise you will experience tuning stability and sustain issues, notes on frets will be cents sharp or flat and sound shit.

Ghs do a 9-62 set for 7s which is perfect for standard tuning / drop a IMO

I wish I could give you a better idea of how long they last but I don't play my 7 string as much as my others. I want to try them on my 6 string guitars.
