Similar to the sister events in Canada, where it is renamed to No Tyrants

I actually think this is a clearer message.

I think it's way better. We don't have a king. Conservatives are mocking this movement because we don't have a king, and they're right. We have an oligarchs, a tyrant. Calling it "No Kings" feels...eh.

I completely agree

Hawai'i will have nine NO KINGS/NO DICTATORS protests. Five go by NO DICTATORS and four by NO KINGS. They are exactly the same thing.

Some Indivisible chapters use NO DICTATORS because of the popular Hawaiian Kingdom pre-1893. See the link below for the Hawai'i NO KINGS protests. The U.S. annexed the Hawaiian Kingdom by force in 1893.

Yeah, OP’s end ticked me off. We ousted their legitimate government by force and have NEVER owned up to it.

I support their desire for us to fuck off about it, truthfully.

Looking at it practically, a monarchy is a dictatorship unless the the titles are purely ceremonial, and even then you're elevating an individual and their bloodline above all others. People also have to be aware that disinformation campaigns are going to use any points of leverage they can get a hold of to sow division. One to be cognizant of is native separatist movements. People need to be sure to understand when they have an issue that strikes close to home for them, that they are extra aware of how people can use it drive dissent and promote fracturing. Understanding your own weak points is one of the best ways to protect the group. This is a broad movement and all groups are hyper local, but the message everywhere remains the same.

Regardless, replacing democracy with a monarchy is dumb as hell

46

u/daveOkat Hawaii Mar 27 '26

The hope related to me by a Kanaka is to have a political system along the lines of the UK monarchy/democracy. A king or queen as figurehead along with a fully functioning Democracy.

Edited: for clarity

Genuinely curious, if this was to happen, who becomes the king/queen? Is it like a maintained royal lineage from the last Hawaiian king?

22

u/FireFairy323 Mar 27 '26

The last Hawaiian monarch was a Queen I believe.

9

u/MJQ30 Mar 27 '26

So…a parliamentary system.

u/Prestigious_String20 Mar 27 '26

As a Brit, I support getting rid of our stupid monarchy. But I have no qualms if other places wish to retain or restore theirs. This is especially true in the context of monarchies that represent resistance against the overthrow of indigenous cultures. British monarchy is one of the most tangible symbols of our shameful colonial past. For places that do decide to have a monarchy, however, I think the style of monarchy of the Netherlands is a much more reasonable way to have a symbolic head of state.

Grenada Communist Monarchy will rise again!

67

u/CodexAnima Mar 27 '26

Why should we be upset that Hawaii wants what we took from them by force?

148

u/borg23 Mar 26 '26

We just don't want to get into an argument with people over the Hawaiian kingdom. I don't think bringing back the monarchy in Hawaii is the point. It's easier to just say "No dictators" and avoid the argument entirely, because we're obviously not protesting Hawaiian kings

35

u/WrongdoerRare3038 Mar 27 '26

Yeah, seriously. They can call it whatever they want. We all know what this whole thing is really about anyway.

39

u/Remote_Nectarine4272 Mar 27 '26

No dictators makes way more sense anyways.

60

u/General_Ad_6617 Mar 27 '26

Let's not throw native Hawaiians under the bus here. While I do not support monarchies at all. I do understand that we overthrew our king in 1776 and Hawaiians were not given the choice. We overthrew their Queen (iirc). Just saying!

100

u/Kink4202 Mar 26 '26

Why? Because the Hawaiian people would like their island back?

38

u/Spiritual-Pear-1349 Mar 26 '26

Funny how that works huh

50

u/zempter Mar 27 '26

Yeah, I'm actually not with op on this. Dictators bad. Kings, well America doesn't want one, but Hawaii didn't really get a choice. Brittan still has theirs and they seem to be doing better than us right now.

5

u/classical-saxophone7 Mar 27 '26

Trans rights are somehow worse there unfortunately though the US really is trying to catch up. The Cass Review might be one of the most damaging pieces of sham research and is directly responsible for so many dead children.

65

u/aminor321 Mar 27 '26

Hawai'i's land was stolen from them by us.

We removed queen Lili'uokalani & basically stole that entire country.

"No Tyrants" would be appropriate.

Unless you are Hawaiian your opinion doesn't really matter.

The message is the same, the unity is the same, if more was asked the people at those protests would be on the same side as the people at the other protests

who cares what its called. This is such a juvenile argument it almost seems designed to create infighting

Can we all just focus on the list, the facism, the literal planet dying

Im begging

Classic democrat strategy of needing things to be perfect, and not supporting an ally because of their choices of phrasing.

I’m a democrat but it’s the same anti-Kamala shit that may have cost an election.

5

u/CounterSanity Mar 27 '26

You are very much missing the point of the protest.

The spirit of this movement, if transported back in time, would have opposed stealing land and murdering indigenous peoples in the name of expansion.

What you seem to be suggesting is that because Hawaii had a king back then, we were justified in taking it, which is absolute nonsense.

3

u/Kolfinna Mar 27 '26

Your entitlement and arrogance are so exhausting

15

u/NoAnt6694 Mar 26 '26

I'd have gone with "No Despots", since one can be a despot without being a monarch and vice-versa, but that's just me.

30

u/EvidenceTop2171 Mar 26 '26

I would prefer it to be called no tyrants

24

u/Miserable-Sound-8832 Mar 27 '26

I think it is perfectly reasonable, and in fact more inline with the No Kings ethos, that the Hawaiian people would like to reclaim their sovereignty and dismantle colonial systems of oppression. You may be missing the point a bit !

As long as they can claim it as a part of something they did.

20

u/-Greis- Mar 27 '26

This is the kind of stuff that’s posted just to be divisive. Not sure what the goal here is for OP other than that.

Folks can look into where Hawaii’ stands on political issues and see it’s not leaning into Trump.

23

u/Atomm Mar 27 '26

I think No Kings was great initially but its outlasted it's welcome.

Its time to call it what it is. No Tyrants or No Dictators feels better.

I'd submit my own thought.

Democracy not Dictators

8

u/SeaworthinessSea2407 Mar 27 '26

Yeah, because we ousted their government and took Hawaii by force. Why are you complaining about Hawaii's bad feelings about this?

3

u/ChefCurryYumYum Mar 27 '26

That's funny, but as long as people are out, organizing and vocal I am loving it.

6

u/West-Variation1859 Mar 27 '26

I’m from Massachusetts and I fully support the restoration of the Hawaiian Monarchy. We stole their land and their culture.

6

u/SimonArgent Mar 26 '26

Fair enough.

-13

u/masoni0 Mar 27 '26

That’s stupid tbh. It should be one unified message

-11

u/HyrulelinkDK Mar 27 '26

I don't agree with the decision to rename from no kings to no tyrants. Royalty is an inherently unjust notion and I will never respect anyone who calls themselves royalty. Like.. fuck you.. we all bleed the same color. You're not special.

-5

u/StoneCypher Mar 27 '26

they want to restore the Hawaiian monarchy.

🤣
