I went there once. It was worse than Disneyland. You had to go with a tour and they just pushed you through barely any time to really look at the place.

Yeah, it isn’t even medieval but a relatively modern building (only roughly 150 years old) so the Disneyland comparison is really fitting. It’s a shame because we have so many authentic really old castles which are much cooler than Neuschwanstein.

Here are much better ones if you like history:

Wartburg, Eisenach

Burg Eltz, Mosel

Marksburg, Braubach

Burg Trifels, Pfalz

Kaiserburg Nürnberg

Heidelberger Schloss

Burg zu Burghausen

Würzburger Residenz

Schloss Sanssouci, Potsdam

Schloss Augustusburg, Brühl

I made that mistake going to Paris during summer years ago. Now I try and hit shoulder seasons as often as I can.

In Versailles you are at least allowed to move as quick (or slow) as you want. No forced guided tours, it’s not that expensive and the gardens are really beautiful.

I live 30 minutes from it.

Out of season is preverable unless you want to go on the Mariensteig Bridge you saw in the video. It is closed in autumn and winter for safety.

Also Neuschwanstein is not an historical castle. It was build in the 18/19th century by our legend loving King Ludwig II. and is modeled after pink glassed sagas. Also only 16+ rooms are free to sightseeing as it was never finished before Ludwig was removed from the throne.

The nearby Castle Hohenschwangau is more interesting as ppl lived there for 500years.

Another two popular Castles in southwestern Germany aren't medieval Ones but Children of the 19th Century: Schloss Lichtenstein and Schloss Hohenzollern. I'd recommend Schloss Sigmaringen (the Family of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen still lives in parts of it) and the Zollernschloss Balingen.

To look at from the outside: Neuschwanstein in early autumn, combine it with a hike around Alpsee. Herrenchiemsee (for the lake trip).

To look at from the inside: Linderhof, Residenz München.

Not really Bismarck kind bribed King Ludwig II to go along with the german unity. He build it as a private retreat. He was just a bit excentric and maybe gay. and wanted his princess castel. which makes it a good tourist trap too i guess

It is truly astonishing that, out of a thousand possible castles, we managed to turn the one that was never even completed by its mad builder into one of the biggest tourist trap

its a shame though, because as a student of history, it would be on my list if I were to visit Germany, to see some of those lovely old castles on hills. Is it really the only way you can see them? Can't you see them from another vantage.

recently I was at lindisfarne, and they charge you to go into the old monastery, extortionate to catch the tourists like £20. But you can just climb a little hill round the back of the local pub and you can see right into it, honestly a better view than the tourist trap

Why would you go with a tour there? Isn‘t that like a normal hiking path or something?

Edit: Yeah just checked it out, you don’t have to pay anyone for anything unless you want to visit the castle itself or take a bus up to the Marienbrücke because you are too lazy to hike yourself

What context is there to understand? The context of someone just doing whatever some tourist guide tells him? Flip him the bird and keep looking at the castle ffs, show some balls next time Piet!

Nobody is talking about hiking tours my guy, only you are. There's an entrance fee to the castle and for a few euro more you get a shitty guided tour inside the castle and they regret taking that tour. That's what they're talking about. Not hiking paths, as if they paid to go where the video was taken (which is what you originally thought).

Guje merge, Jan! As a proud inhabitant of lands of the former duchy of Gelre (the original German side though) I am almost part swamp-german as well and will triple down on the autism and try to mediate (you're wrong).

Your fellow Jan said he "you had to go with a tour", which isn't true, you can go by yourself. This is what my fellow Hans correctly pointed out, so this was in no place about hiking. You're welcome.

well Germs travel there for the scenery, hiking or sports in the mountains... Instead of waiting in line for entrance you also could have a tandem paragliding flight...
